Jair Jurrjens Named Rookie of the Month
A win last night, now this good news... and no bad news in between. This is truly a rare occurrence for the Braves of late. Here is the official snippit:
Atlanta Braves pitcher Jair Jurrjens has been named the June recipient of the National League Rookie of the Month Award presented by Gillette.
In four starts last month, Jurrjens posted a 3-0 record and a 1.63 ERA. Atlanta won all four of the games started by the Curacao native. The 22-year-old did not surrender an earned run in his final three starts in June, spanning 21.2 innings in which he yielded just 14 hits. Overall, the right-hander fanned 18 batters in 27.2 innings, allowing 25 hits, seven walks and just one home run. In 18 starts this year, Jurrjens is 9-4 with a 3.00 ERA, and he has a 12-5 record and a 3.37 ERA in his first 25 Major League starts, which included seven starts with the Detroit Tigers last season.
This feels like it might be the first of many accomplishments for our rookie hurler. Here are his stats for the season:
And here's the guy we traded for him:
And here's the guy who replaced the guy we traded for him:
I think that pretty much speaks for itself. That trade was a win-win-win-win.

Give it up for the...

He totally deserved it. I look forward to his starts more than any other starting pitcher we currently have right now.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Not really
Braves still gave up:
Neftali Feliz, who has quickly risen to the level of ace prospect.
Matt Harrison, who should be a very serviceable major league starter
Saltalamacchia, who while not having a great season, is a 22-year-old catcher with great bat skills.
Elvis Andrus, who is a toolshed with humongous upside, even though he really hasn’t done anything yet. I know people around here weren’t big fans of him, but he’s still extremely young and has plenty of time to develop.
All this for a great half year (last year) and a mediocre 2008 campaign. I was a fan of the trade at the time, but since hindsight is 20/20, I’m pretty sure we’ll end up losers on that deal. I can’t blame Schuerholz for making it, but it will come back to haunt us.

Don't forget the 3 draft picks.
One of them turned into Brett DeVall and we’ll get 2 more when Tex walks.
If we combine both trades, it’s really not bad for us. I guess we have a knack for getting some pretty pitchers from Detroit.
Wow.
I knew he’s been good, but I didn’t realize how strong he’s been over the past month. Good show!
