Braves Sign Julian Tavarez

Hot off the presses:

The Atlanta Braves today signed free-agent right-handed pitcher Julian Tavarez to a contract through the remainder of the 2008 season. Financial terms were not disclosed.  Tavarez is expected to be in Los Angeles in time for the Braves’ game versus the Dodgers tonight at 10:10 p.m. ET.

Tavarez owns an 84-72 career record with 22 saves and a 4.46 ERA in 750 games.  He has appeared in 16 games this season (nine with Boston and seven with Milwaukee) and is 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA. Tavarez has not allowed a home run in 20.0 innings pitched this season and has limited right-handed batters to a .213 (10-for-47) average.

The Braves are Tavarez’s 10th major league club. He broke in with Cleveland in 1993 and has pitched in the postseason five times, including twice in the World Series (1995 with Cleveland and in 2004 with St. Louis).

I spit on this move.

oh man

i have NO idea if this is good.

What a horrible situation, but b/c he’s not given up an HR in 20 innings, i’m overlooking his 7.50 ERA. THAT’S NOT RIGHT!!!!!

cringe

At least it’s an arm that can start or relieve.

No matter, this is how I feel about it:

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

by bigjoe on Jul 8, 2008 4:47 PM EDT   0 recs

Is this a joke?

He’s like 87 years old

by jjcollins on Jul 8, 2008 4:48 PM EDT   0 recs

I love the spin
Tavarez has not allowed a home run in 20.0 innings pitched this season

But 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA indicates that a lot of runs are still scoring.

has limited right-handed batters to a .213 (10-for-47) average.

But what is his split against lefties? .520??

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Haha, I cannot believe how close you were. Check it out:

vs. LH – .525/.574/.600

WHAT...THE...FUCK...

...I don’t want that child molester on my team.

Hahaha

I always called him “Dhalsim” as in the street fighter character from india with the stretchy limbs.

I would never insult Dhalsim like that. Guile was still my favorite.

are you SERIOUS???

Guile had like the worst moves in the game. Good ol’ Ryu was almost at an unfair advantage with how good he was – until M. Bison came along…..

LOL

Didn’t mean for this to turn into some street fighter discussion. Besides, I’m like Pujols with Ken. Used to beat hordes of preppy Asian kids at Springfield mall for hours, back before it turned into the mall that Chris Rock based all his jokes off of.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

What are the chances...

...that bigjoe played as Zangief?

big joe played mortal kombat and killer instinct, thanks. SCORPION AND CINDER FOR THE WIN!

by bigjoe on Jul 8, 2008 5:43 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Didn’t have a Sega so I never really got into Mortal Kombat. Killer Instinct though…now that was a good game! Can’t remember the name of my guy, though…

Please...

...worst moves? Sonic boom and flash kick PWNED. Every once in a while I dust off the old Super NES and challenge anyone within shouting distance. I was undefeated in college.

When the Braves come to play the Nats you have to come up and hang out with me and royhobbs at the game. Then we come back to my house and get wrecked playing Street Fighter 2…it’ll be AWESOME.

You want competition?

Georgia Tech is full of the most hardcore, insanely skilled video gamers I’ve ever met in my life. Go on youtube, and put in like “combo videos street fighter” and watch the insanity. GA Tech students play like that. . .

This might be the best fight I’ve ever seen in that game.

Yes

But playing against those guys is annoying. You see the knee-jerk movements of the characters? Imagine the people behind the joysticks. They’re doing head fakes and jarring of the joysticks, because everyone plays defensively, and they chip their opponents to death. It’s really quite lame. . .

If wren keeps saying that the pitching really isnt the problem, and that we need a bat why do they keep picking up players like this. Brian Lawrence, Julian Taverez, where does he fit in. The pen? the rotation for now instead of Morton

by gopherbroke on Jul 8, 2008 5:00 PM EDT   0 recs

The retreads keep on coming...

Welcome to the club, Julian. I’ll re-evaluate my position on you if you turn in some quality innings.

- Oh, Bobby. -

Waaaaaah!

Julian Tavarez cried in the dugout after the Indians lost the 95 series.

Enough said.

by VegasAces on Jul 8, 2008 6:22 PM EDT   0 recs

This is SO bad

But it could be worse. The big bat Wren picks up could be … Barry Bonds. sigh

by rawleigh on Jul 8, 2008 6:27 PM EDT   0 recs

at least barry bonds is a great major league player, albeit with questionable morals.

tavarez isn’t even that

by bigjoe on Jul 8, 2008 6:35 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

And Bonds might help the team win. I’m not sure what Tavarez and his 7.50 ERA are gonna do.

As bad as this signing seems to be, I wonder.....

.....if the purpose is to replace Jeff Bennett as a long releiver? I’m certainly not saying it’s a good move, but I guess it does make some sense. But why not give Todd Redmond a shot? I know he’s not on the 40 man roster, but neither was Tavarez….

by secondbass on Jul 8, 2008 7:41 PM EDT   0 recs

CC to the Brewers...

Haren to the Cubs…

Taveraz to the Braves.

Hold on to your butts.

"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."

by jug on Jul 8, 2008 7:52 PM EDT   0 recs

just realized I made a pretty big typo there...

HarDen to the the Cubs…not Haren.

Pretty much ruined my post. wish you could edit these darn things.

Inevitable

Pujols, this guy sucks so much. Yesterday was immediate justification for everyone here who dreaded this guy’s arrival. I figured that the only point of his existence on the roster is, because he’s certainly not going to be 1/100th as effective as Jeff Bennett is against righties (Andruw Jones got a hit), to take pressure off of Boyer, Acosta and any other reliever who is under a lot of heat right now.

Sounds like a childish, sarcastic claim, but honestly, after seeing him pitch for us, there’s really no other reasoning. Everyone on the open threads had something bad to say about Julie, but that’s one less negative thing we have to say about Acosta or Boyer. In fact, I would’ve preferred to see Acosta come in to relieve Julie, and prevent us from having to use our closer in a redundant situation, but it was evident Bobby was in “Eff this” mode, and had to get the game done.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

he looks creepy, like
