Minor League Recaps: 7/7
The 10 hours days are starting to catch up to me. Meh. Also, I'm watching Sportscenter right now and I just saw that R.J. Swindle made his major league debut for the Phillies tonight. I went to school with him at Charleston Southern University. Classis soft tosser who dominated the low minors and then got released and then picked up again after some time in an Indy league if I remember correctly. The Mets have a pitching prospect name Robert Parnell who I roomed with in college as well.
Richmond - Off
Chattanooga 3, Mississippi 4
- M. Young 1-3 HR(2), 2 RBI, BB
- M. Diaz 0-4 2K (.188 AVG)
- K. Medlen 7IP 4H 3R 1BB 10K
This game is still going on but Kris Medlen had another solid outing as a starter. We could reasonably see this guy in Atlanta next year if he continues to show this kind of prowess as a starter. Our rotation could be very young. The Braves pull off the come from behind win in this one with a walk-off Sac Fly from Quentin Davis in the 9th.
Wilmington 2, Myrtle Beach 5
- W. Cabrera 2-4 3B, RBI
- T. Flowers 1-3 2B, BB, K
- R. Gress 2-2 HR(1) RBI, BB
- C. Vines 7IP5H 1R 0BB 5K
Tyler Flowers really is a walking machine. He now has a 63/65 BB/K rate on the season and has a .409 OBP. He is quietly putting together a solid season at Myrtle Beach in a horrible park at home and playing a demanding position. I'm impressed. Randy Gress made his debut in full season ball tonight and promptly homered to announce his arrival. He was an 18th Rnd pick out of Quinnipiac last season and struggled pretty heavily last year in the GCL and Appy leagues, but pummeled the Appy in a few games this season.
Greensboro 2, Rome 8
- J. Heyward 2-4 2 RBI
- F. Freeman 2-5 3B, RBI, K
- J. Locke 7IP 3H 0R 0BB 6K
Jeff Locke turned in what was probably his best performance of the year and dropped his ERA below 4 for the first time this season. He has been getting stronger and stronger as the season wears on. Heyward left the game in the 8th inning. I'm not sure if he is injured or what but he has missed some noticeable time lately. Freddie Freeman continues to rake.
Danville - Off
Indians 5, Braves 9 - Suspended due to Rain

CODY JOHNSON
Cody Johnson deserves a mention for a 13 Game Hitting Steak that ended Sunday. The streak included 11 Extra Base Hits with 6 HR (One being a 2 out Grand Slam) 10 Runs Scored and 19 RBI Avg .431. He leads the team with 15HR and brought his Avg up to a respectable .248.
There are always going to be bad games and K’s but this is just a sample of what Braves Fans can expect in the future.

I hope....
....I hope Johnson’s great performances here lately will change the way he relates to the fans. He doesn’t get bood or anything, the fans are supportive of him, but he doesn’t seem to appreciate the people who are in the stands game after game. He’ll sign autographs and stuff (usually), but I’ve seen him come charging out of the clubhouse and ignore people who want him to sign. From a low-A baseball player, I don’t like that. Can’t do anything about it, but I don’t like it.
It’s been interesting this year, the personality of the Rome team as a whole. Full of stars, lots of potential, and they (as a group) seem to have that mentality already – superstar. There are a few guys who are really friendly and patient with the fans and take time to chit chat and stuff, but those are few and far between. Even Jason Heyward – he’s bad to put on his ipod and ignore everyone as he walks to his car. I’ve seen him do that several times, not just once, and the last time he had a group of kids following him for a short way before they gave up. Just not the way to treat fans, people you (I should think) hope will support your climb through the minors, which for so many doesn’t end in the big leagues. I guess I’m comparing them particularly to last year’s team who were GREAT with the fans – Flowers, Britton, Marcial, Owings, Cofield, Reynoso, Travis Jones – just one after another.
Sorry NWFla, I don’t mean to jump on Cody; he’s certainly not the only one. I saw a great article on ESPN.com once about Dodger Day in spring training and about how Nomar was horrible with fans. Here are some clips:
“Soon they will stop bothering you. That’s what I wanted to say to the 34-year-old ballplayer; to the rapidly fading has-been whose perspective seems about as sound as his power output. I wanted to tell him that fame is fleeting, and the ability to make someone’s day - to make a memory - is a gift few of us possess. I wanted to tell him to wake up, take off his damn sunglasses and look these people in the eye. I wanted to tell him to treat fans like human beings; to remember that, when one gets right down to it, a major league baseball uniform is - from a fashion standpoint - a half-step removed from my 4-year-old daughter’s Hello Kitty pajamas.
He never looked up. He never said a word. When fans offered a hearty “Good luck!” or said “You’ve always been my favorite!” he either grunted or pretended the sentiment was never expressed. ”
Same article, talking about Steve Garvey:
“No matter what opposing players (or, for that matter, teammates) thought of the too-good-to-be-true Garvey, he never took the paying customers for granted. They remember that more than the .294 lifetime average or the 272 career home runs.
“If you look back to when I was playing, we embraced the fans,” Garvey says. “I still remember when a 70-year-old nurse was having a birthday, and Tommy [Lasorda] got 24 of us to do arches with our bats and sing ‘Happy Birthday.’”
Garvey paused, before continuing.
“Do you think that type of thing happens anymore?”
The question was rhetorical.
Sadly rhetorical. “
Okay, so Maybe this should have been under another thread, but it isn’t. Here it is! Obviously I collect autographs. Those of you who have seen the pictures I post here at the site – I print those, get them signed, put them in albums for my kids (I have 3 daughters), and give the players copies. My oldest loves getting autographs as well, and I really love her take on who her favorite player is each year. You ask most people in the stadium, and they’d probably say Heyward or Johnson or Freeman – they hit the big homeruns or whatever. From our experiences meeting and talking with players (Low Class A, mind you), her answers have been based on the ones who will take time to appreciate your being there – Will Startup, Robert Marcial, Tyler Flowers, Phillip Britton, Jaime Trejo, Cole Miles, Jamie Romak, Chase Fontaine, Jon Mark Owings.
I realize none of this stuff is required of the players. But I drive an hour plus to the games, spend my money at the gate, support the team through good and bad (lots of bad this season in Rome), so I don’t think it’s too much to ask. And I know the short answer is “Quit going and spending your money.” But that’s not the point.
In the players’ defense, it is disheartening to see the dealers show up with bags of crap to get signed. But still, to me, why buy something like that when it’s so easy to get on your own – just ask! And I know guys like Heyward get mobbed after every game, but that comes with the territory. When John Smoltz was in Rome on Rehab, he stayed after the game for close to 2 hours signing for people. Julio Franco did the same, and he was there for several games in a row.
Okay, so that’s my latest rant. The kids are still asleep. If they were up, I probably would have just ignored the touched nerve.
I’m glad Cody is doing better, and I hope it continues.
The article I quoted, by the way, was:
Dodgers fans get no love from Nomar

You know what has worked for me in the past?
Asking for personalization. Nothing tells a signer that you’re looking for an autograph out of fandom/appreciation instead of ebay, more than asking for a degree of personalization.
I was in Vegas one time, and there was a banner outside of a sports store, saying Pete Rose was there signing autographs. I don’t care if he ever gets into the HOF or not, Pete’s still a legend. Now, I also know there’s a joke in there about Pete Rose, and Las Vegas, but I went in, bought an overpriced official Rawlings ball, and sat down next to Pete. He asked me, kind of monotone, where I wanted the ball signed, and I told him “on the sweet spot, could you personalize it?”
He kinda stopped for a second, and looked at me, asked my name, and signed the ball, and made it out to me. Being Las Vegas, he also wrote “good luck.” He then leaned back in his chair and asked me some other random questions, and chatted for a good bit, before seeing my camera, and telling one of the employees to take a picture of us together.
Little things.

There was a good article on espn.com (part of their e-ticket series, which is always quite good IMO) regarding Rose and A-Rod’s “friendship”. It was probably the same store you went to. Having read that article, and now your experience, it was easy to visualize.
Do you remember any of the other questions he asked? I’m curious to know what questions a baseball legend would ask a random fan. Probably just the usual “where you from, what do you do?” stuff, but maybe there’s more.
And I agree with you – who cares if he gets in the Hall or not. The betting doesn’t take away from what he did as a player. If any of the guys that used steriods ever get in, Rose should go in too. Shoeless Joe also.

Typical fare, where I’m from (Atlanta), so you’re a Braves fans (yessir), what do you think their chances are (good (bolstered bullpen 2007 year)), what do you do (graphic design).
I asked him what it was like taking some bumps in a wrestling ring, from when he did some cameo appearances for a few years at Wrestlemanias, and he responded that “as staged and pre-determined pro-wrestling is, being dropped on your back still results in soreness for a (then) 59 year old.”

Absolutely right
I’ve always collected autographs, as long as I can remember, and not just baseball. I love Star Wars, and I had a real fascination with animation at one point, especially with Scooby Doo and the Powerpuff Girls (Scooby from my own childhood, and the PPG from my kids – but the storytelling and humor was great!) I digress. I sent a lot of stuff through the mail to those respective individuals – voice actors, animators, producers, all kinds of people. I have what I think is a very cool collection (ALL personalized to either me or my daughter) – I got a cool staff sheet of Mojo Jojo from Powerpuffs that was like a template of how to draw the character for the animators. It even says something like Property of Cartoon Network – Do Not Remove. But it’s signed and personalized to me from one of the head animators. And I sent a card to the creator of the show, and he signed the card and then drew one of the villians on the cardboard insert I had put in to keep the cards from getting bent.
You know, I don’t usually get the pictures personalized simply because of time. We always get at the end of the line so we’re last (I feel bad getting in front of kids, even though I have my kid with me) – by then, it’s usually late, and I always get stuff signed 3 at a time, one for each kid, so it takes a minute. The players, of course, don’t know that. But I might start asking them to do that – personalize. I do get a shot of my oldest with each player and have them sign it, personalized to her. Again, players in the past didn’t seem to mind, and most don’t seem to mind this year. Maybe I should start with the individual shots I get. Hmmmm….something for me to ponder!
Yeah, personalization is the way to go!
(The Escobar shot is outside the Rome clubhouse – the signed, personalized-to-my-daughter version is in our collection)

Escobar's so nice.
As much flack as he gets for “being too Cuban,” I still see a guy who is thankful every day to be playing pro-baseball in the United States as opposed to living in Cuba, and it shows with how he acts around fans.
Whether they comply or not, the simple request of personalization at least lets them know, whether they realize it or not, that you want X signed because you’re a fan, and not some scrub looking to make a buck selling it.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Remember . . .
Remember that most of the Rome Braves team is comprised of teens +. They are learning their way in professional baseball including the balance between being focused on the coming game and being friendly to the fans. I happen to know several of the players personally and know their pregame “focus” to be critical to their performance.
I have seen the line of fans outside the club house after the games. These kids (young men) are very happy to sign autographs for every one of them. I know it may not be as convenient as going down to the dugout wall, but please be patient with them and know they are preparing for the game and their futures. Please cheer and be supportive of them all . . . they hear you!

Yeah I haven’t been as up on everything as possible lately. I know he has been really good lately and i mentioned on my last hotlist that he has been killing the ball, though i wasn’t aware of the 13 game hitting streak. I want to see him ride a streak for a couple months before i decide he is going to put up any good numbers in the future. He still leads the minors in Ks and that is a major concern. The Braves did draft him knowing he would be a long term project so I’m willing to wait on him.

Gress
Gress actually played in Rome a little bit this season….didn’t do all that great, if I remember right. He was there long enough to have a card printed in the team set, and then he was gone. I wasn’t surprised to see him show up with Danville later, but now I’m surprised he’s at MB. But he did well, I guess, so good for him.
I just wonder sometimes how and why they choose to promote/demote guys. Cole Miles was having a solid enough season in Rome to get the promotion, and yet Gress got the nod. I’m just curious is all….

I wonder...
...if Diaz’s .367 and .378 BABIP in 2006 and 2007 is finally catching up to him. People need to realize that he is not that good of a hitter.
I'm gettin' out of this town alive...even if it kills me.

Amen. The Braves have the worst OF in baseball and I’m not really leaning on the return of Diaz to help at all.
