Cards @ Braves Open Thread: Atlanta tries to avoid the sweep... with Mike Hampton
St. Louis Cardinals at Atlanta Braves, Jul 31, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
We're throwing our stopper... Mike Hampton... to try and avoid the sweep at the hands of the Cardinals. Who would have thought at the beginning of the season that the last man standing in a rotation full of Smoltz, Glavine, Hudson, and Hampton, would be Hampton.

- Oh, Bobby. -
Good!
Sammons back behind the dish. I want to see the young guys from here on out. To that end I wouldn’t mind seeing Prado at third instead of the Game Genie, but one of two isn’t bad.
I agree, but game genie has been on fire lately...
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
I think Chip is actually an android
He only can say a few phrases, and just keeps repeating them every game.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Chip Caray has a new nickname
Data. Like from Star Trek, but of course, it also has other meanings around here:)
And Mike Hampton
Appears hittable again today…
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Hmmm
think hampton will record an out this game?
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Question:
Anybody surprised Manny went to L.A.?
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Jason Bay is having a nice year and he's a good player
They obviously had enough of Manny being a Manny-asshole up there.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
what surprised me...
is the Dodgers already have 40 OFs, what are they going to do with him? They must have the highest paid OF in the MLB…think so?
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
They have 5. Manny playing everryday means Kemp, Eithier, Andruw Jones and Pierre have to share 2 spots. I bet Andruw gets DL’ed soon leaving Pierre as the 4th OF
I think they hate youngsters
Or they feel like they have to play their overpriced players. Which is why LaRoche rarely got at-bats while Nomar stunk up the place
I wouldn't mind having Kemp...
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
That is...
If he could learn how not to strike out…111 in 386 ABs…But his OPS is still 110…
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
This is ugly already.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
LaRue
When he played for the Reds, a friend of mine called him “Fee-fee” LaRue because he was batting like .190…Of course, that is all-world compared to Porky…
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Kotchman has yet to impress me. Best I’ve seen so far was an almost-to-the-warning-track shot he hit last night. If that’s all he’s got, I hope we trade him some bats and some bubblegum in the off-season. But its early. He might still show me something as this miserable excuse for a season goes on.
Yeah we have to give him time to settle in...
I think we have to hope he will develop and improve over the next several months…
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
I've been fixing dinner
and haven’t paid much attention…but Hampton failed in the 1st inning… but got ‘em 123 in the 2nd.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
here's sammons
show you are worthy of miller’s spot
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Frenchy!!!
He is coming around!!! Better late than never, I suppose.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Yeah, me too.
But I want him to show me that he’s as good as we all thought he was.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
HAMPTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
STILL CAN HIT!
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Just 2 more RBIs
And he’ll have as many as Corky!
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
I may watch some Pirates game the rest of the season, just to watch the Laroche brothers play together some.
Tex’s comments about “wanting to remain a Brave” after he was traded really pissed me off.
I can’t say I’m that excited to watch the Laroche’s to suffer through a Pirates game…
Makes me angry too, consider he had that chance. Don’t get me wrong, Tex is pretty smart about his image, what he says, and waiting to get a big contract. He’s going to get that huge contract this off-season. I will bet he goes to New York.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Yes good point
I was more correct just saying New York.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
We should all keep in mind...
Kotch has 800 fewer ABs than Francoeur.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
WTF - trivia question
how many hr do the angels #3 hitters have this year? that is f*cking stupid.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
well my cable's effed up
not that that is a surprise.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
And apparently their pitcher just homered.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Which...gives him as many as our back-up catcher this year.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
really?
Oh, I guess I didn’t pay attention… Skip said, “nobody’s going to get that” and I just assumed it was gone. I’m not sure if he said it was a double or not…
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Why do backup catchers have to look like old bikers?
Just a small sample size:
Corky Miller, Sal Fasano, Jason Larue
***TEX UPDATE***
Flied out to right.
He’s going about as well as Kotchman…somehow that makes me feel better.
Sammy!
“Nobody got that,” but I did hear single this time.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
At this rate he will
Keep in mind this is his 2ND GAME! He’s got, what, 3 or 4 ABs this season as opposed to Corky’s 50-60?
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Yes, but you need to respect my aw-thor-a-ty!
It doesn’t count unless I say it.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Can't see...
was it fair or foul?
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
I mean
was the call correct.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Wow what a play...
(cable’s back)
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Skip can't get over that everybody
on “our messageboard” (Braves vision?) are wearing the same clothes and hats.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Geez
could we keep a lead?
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
By Porky
I think Clint just won the backup role. He’s probably going to get the shaving cream pie in the mug after the game.
Chris
Sammons
Has as many HRs as Corky Miller in roughly 1/10th as many ABs
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
It really sucks.
I live in Indiana, and since it is St. Louis playing our Bravos I’m blacked out from mlb.com tv. Able to listen on the radio option, though. Supplemented with Gameday, despite the lag.
Saw the replay on Gameday
Way to hammer a hanging slider, and I don’t think there was really much doubt about it when it left his bat.
Chris
damn
what happened? I had to walk the dog real fast and we have a 7-4 lead!!!
Some one had a doubtless shot?
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
wait, no I saw Sammons no doubter
I just missed the double
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Manny for Favre?
So the trade fell through huh? Too bad… I was hoping to see Favre get some at bats in Boston and watch Manny’s dred locks freeze and break off this winter in Green Bay.
JB in ATL

The Packers don't deserve Manny.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"

Question:
Of the following, which teams would you rather see in the playoffs Cubs, Cardinals or Brewers? And the follow-up, which teams do you think will be in the playoffs from the NL Central?
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
My Two-Cents
Brewers. There is a team that could use a drink from the ol’ playoff fountain. I think they get the wild card, while the Cubs win the NL Central.
I don't know
I think the Cubs and Brewers will be NL champs and wildcard respectively. But I’d rather see Brew Crew and Cards. I’m kind of sick of Cubs fans…But oh well.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Brewers for me
I hate the Cubs, mostly because of their idiot announcers, and I’ve always hated the Cardinals
hmmm
maybe we jumped the gun saying Frenchy has turned a corner… 2Ks in a row, 4 LOB tonight.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Sammons
is the new back-up catcher, or I am going to throw things.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
I think we shoud trade Porky(and Acosta) to anybody who will take them
Like the Army maybe? Maybe the Salvation Army?
I ALMOST
posted the “other” victory pic (the bobble-butt) just out of spite, but I thought better of it. Is it officially retired, or should we trade it to L.A.A.o.A.?
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
i forgot how much fun live baseball is. ALL FEAR INFANTE
Following the Braves...one long hard drink at a time.
I'm excited
To hear about your adventure at the Ted!
Apparently you are good luck, you must attend all games from now on.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
quick thoughts.
too many post-inning gimmicks. i counted 17. SEVENTEEN.
the sheep at turner are already slowly turning on kotchman. he needs to string something together this weekend
jeff francoeur can apparently do no wrong. got the biggest pop by far in our “lineup” tonight
i’m pretty sure royhobbs would have infante’s baby
mike hampton. shockingly not horrible. plus, he delivered with the bat. big ups to mike for tonight
Following the Braves...one long hard drink at a time.
Best part about yesterday's game
Looking down the lineup, and seeing NO .300+ hitters
By nights end, Infante (.306), Sammons (.500), and even Hampton saw some .300 time. Sure, none of them are full-time every-day players, but it goes to show that those 15 hits certainly did some good afterall.
And yes, I’d have Infante’s bushy-eyebrow’d man babies, to go on play dates with McCann’s man-bearded babies in a heart beat.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
I think...
yall must be in the picture of the Sammons homerun somewhere, because if I remember correctly, it was section 142 where RoyHobbs had the seats. Am I correct?
it was ONE SECTION OVER from us. infante’s was about 3 in the other direction. we were at the very last row of seats by the walkway, at the end of the aisle. we were all noticing how while kotsay & francoeur actually seem to be paying attention to the batter, gregor is doing stupid shit like stretching his quads and looking around like a lost dog. maybe thats why he gets such shitty jumps
Following the Braves...one long hard drink at a time.
probably gonna get OF seats again tomorrow cuz chuck is pitching. AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS!!!
Following the Braves...one long hard drink at a time.
CHUCK AND SUCK! CHUCK AND SUCK!
I guess I should be one to talk.

Thanks for posting the link, though
What a surreal game to be at…many thanks to royhobbs for the tickets, and a hearty “clap-clap” to bigjoe for scoring the most tomahawks I’ve ever seen one person possess.
Here are my pics from the game last night—good to see you again, royhobbs and Lizziebeth, and it was nice to meet bigjoe too!
I’m sorry to say I left right before the Sammons home run. I’ve been sick all week and the rain started coming down again, so I opted to run home during what ended up being the worst of the evening shower. I should have stayed until the end of the half-inning!
Quote from Mr. Glass:
from the AJC 8/1/08:
“I got a wrap on my hamstring, I’ve got a wrap on my groin, I got a wrap on my ankle and calf and on my knee,” Hampton said. “I’m just super-glued together. I’m just hoping something don’t fly off coming around second base. You just tape it up and go.”
Priceless…
I bet
You’re going to buy that shot. In one of the commemorative frames, no less. And then put it next to the Braves Statue of Liberty you’re going to find and buy later on this weekend. lol at me ducking out of the picture in my Glavine shirt.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
i’m not paying EIGHTEEN DOLLARS for an 8×10. maybe if i’m drunk i will…but that would require me to go to the 20-some odd galleries until i find it again.
Following the Braves...one long hard drink at a time.
If there’s anyone still paying attention to this thread after 6:30 p.m. today, start leaving encouraging comments to why bigjoe should buy this picture in a commemorative frame, so that when he drunkenly stumbles back to his hotel room later tonight, and crashes into his laptop and eventually rechecks the thread because he’s looking for the “1 new”, he’ll eventually see why he does indeed need to pay EIGHTEEN DOLLARS for this 8×10.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Haha, that’s classic. Certainly worth the $18 bucks if you ask me.

You kind of look like
Lance Berkman. You should totally get a Berkman jersey, call yourself the Puma, and go hunting for cougars. And when I say “Berkman jersey,” i’m really saying that you need to drop $18 and get this awesome picture.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Buy it, buy it, buy it
Just kidding, it is too freakin’ much to pay for a pic that you’ve successfully copied! It IS a good picture, though. More tomahawks than I’ve ever seen one person possess…
I’m still laughing at RH ducking, too.
