Media outlets reporting done deal!
Tex for Kotchman and Marek
Here's what Sickels recently said about Marek:
9) Stephen Marek, RHP, Grade C+ 3.66 ERA with 57/21 K/BB in 47 innings for Arkansas, doing well in a relief role though command needs improvement.
I personally think we could have done better, but I like Kotchman. I would have held out longer for a starter, but maybe Wren knew this was the best deal he could get.
OH well. Let the flaming of Wren begin ...

oh man
i don’t believe this i really thought we would get a good pitcher like Scherzer but oh well hope Kotchman picks it up and provides something next year
Terrible Trade
Bad trade. Two draft picks would have been better.
Still need power
Hopefully we can land Jason Bay, and they pursue CC this offseason.
Got the Braves as my NL and White Sox as my AL!
K's
Atleast Kotchman puts the ball in play. Tex had 70 k’s to Casey’s 23. I can’t beleive we got one of the Casey 1st baseman. I used to joke and say I never want a Casey at 1st (Kotchman or Sean)

I just find it hard to believe that a mediocre first basemen and a slightly above average relief pitching prospect (what are we going after a reliever for anyway) is all we could land for the best available bat (by far) at the trading deadline….
Especially with names like Adenhart, Parker, Scherzer, etc. being thrown out before.

I agree, there was still plenty of time until the deadline. We could have let him dangle longer until a GM caved in. Oh well, there’s still Kotsay and Ohman that could return something.

I doubt Kotsay will get much in return, if anything. He’s too much of an injury risk to a contender.
And a good measuring stick for what Ohman would return is what we gave up for Octavio Dotel…aka Kyle Davies. Probably a bit more, but if you’re hoping for a big impact player then I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Wren needs to get that Jason Bay deal done right away.
I guess I should be one to talk.

Like who?
Bay is 30 years old and is obviously rebounding from a down year last year. He should be right in the middle of his peak, and not hitting a decline for a couple more years. He’s signed through next year, so if we traded for him we could look at working at an extension (as long as it’s nothing crazy) in which he could still be with the team in 2010 when we could be contending once again.
Please tell me who you would rather try to rebuild around, because we need a power hitting outfielders to hit between Chipper and McCann in the lineup…preferably a RH hitter Here’s the FA’s after this season per MLBTR:

And...
...we’d only have to pay him $7.5 million next year. Are you against paying under market value for a guy with a .900 OPS?

agreed
we were all teased with jarrod parker and jackson type deals tho
Yahoo has tonight's lineups up
and Teixeira is still listed at 1B for the Braves … what gives? Could the media have jumped the gun?
I think trade blogs are faster to update than Yahoo Gameday.

I swear
if that is all we got for teixera the wren needs to be fired on the spot that is seriously unnacceptable
words can’t express how pissed i am right now. if there really were offers involving brandon wood or joe saunders on the table, why turn them down to pick up a first baseman who can’t get on base or hit for power and a fucking AA reliever?
Following the Braves...one long hard drink at a time.
Probably because that wasn't on the table.
Look, there’s been lots of talk of what was out there, but nothing happened so, if a better deal was really there it would have been taken. Maybe this deal isn’t great, but there are no guarantees with draft picks either, so getting something for Tex isn’t a bad move. Plus there is nothing official on the 2nd player, or at least wasn’t when I last looked.
Perhaps there weren’t. The situation was very poor to try to trade Teixeira this year because of how many contenders had options at first base. There wasn’t a perfect fit available (even though the Twins would’ve made all kinds of sense).
I’m just pissed that Wren felt the need to pretend we care about the rest of the season by picking up Kotchman rather than even a B prospect with upside – Bourjos, Rodriguez, something with more upside than Kotchman being a 300/370/470. That’s nothing special, but we’ll control him for something like 3-4 more seasons at below market prices at which point something with Flowers, Freeman, Heyward, Person X will be available to take over.
Marek is a guy who should be shifted back to being a starter. He walks a lot of guys, but compensates by missing bats and getting ground balls. That has more value as a #4-5 starter than as a decent reliever.
Dissapointing
I can accept getting Kotchman. I don’t think he is a difference maker at 1B but I think he can be a contributor to a good line up. However, the Braves have been so offensively dissapointing this year that we need our 1B to be a reall offensive contributor. If you had Frenchie developing into your proto type RF and KJ hitting like he should (or at least I thought he should be) then Kotchman isn’t a bad fit for the Braves. My frustration is that we got a AA reliever who is 25 yrs old? I am not a prospect guru..but 25 is really old for AA. You have to look at any success he has had there with some scepticism given his age.
I am more frustrated with the lack of quality additional players. If we are taking Kotchman and third rate AA reliever would should have at least been able to Get Juan Rivera or ROb Quinlan to look at as LF options!
