Could A Possible Manny Ramirez Trade Pique the Red Sox Interest In Mark Teixeira

I'll spare everyone the details of the latest Manny Ramirez saga in Boston, but the short and skinny is that he wants out and the the Red Sox wouldn't mind moving him. They apparently want some young talent in return and might be willing to part with him for less than some would think.

If the Red Sox can trade Manny (and certainly I'm not endorsing or even suggesting that the Braves should get him), then the question becomes, "do they try and acquire Mark Teixeira to replace Manny's production in their lineup?" With the possibility of the Yankees showing more interest in Teixeira, the rivalry between those two teams could prompt both of them to become bigger players in the Tex sweepstakes -- especially if they both develop a need -- and certainly the reality of no Jorge Posada for the Yanks and the possibility of no Manny Ramirez for the Red Sox is a need.

Kevin Youkilis, Boston's current first baseman, has played in the outfield before, so he could be moved out there while Teixeira plays first. A possible acquisition of Mark Teixeira on the heels of a Manny Ramirez trade would also provide insurance -- in the form of a middle of the order impact bat -- in case David Ortiz finds himself back on the disabled list.

“In what universe does a Red Sox team in a pennant race trade their top offensive contributor this season? Seriously.”

Because we haven’t heard these rumors every winter and summer for the last three years. The Red Sox hold the cards here and they’re not going to piss away a pretty damn good shot at the postseason just cause Manny’s bitching again.

"Your anti-intellectualism is noted."

Come on….you had to know that was on its way!
Now if Dwight will just give me another demerit, or whatever all that -1 stuff means, then my patience will truly be rewarded!

Buster Olney reports:

As Jayson Stark reported earlier today, the Braves have made it known that they have put Mark Teixeira up for bids. On Monday evening, rival executives had no way of knowing for sure what cards the Braves were holding, but some who’ve been involved in the Teixeira trade talks are getting the vibe that Atlanta is leaning toward one team—the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Braves asked for Conor Jackson early in the conversations between the two teams, and the D-backs said no, and it may be that a deal could be structured around Chad Tracy and a pitching prospect not named Max Scherzer. But the Braves maintain they have a range of offers from which to choose.

What is Arizona's outfield depth in the minors?

I ask becaue I wonder if we could include Jon Mark Owings to either expand the trade or sweeten the deal to get Jackson. I’m really just curious – I wonder if Arizona would bite at the chance to have the Owings brothers on the same team….and Jon Mark isn’t too shabby. I don’t expect them to make a deal for publicity’s sake, but again, Jon Mark would be a nice get for them, so it wouldn’t just be a gimmick. And we have plenty of outfield prospects as is, so it wouldn’t hurt us. Hmmm…..I guess it’s not likely to happen, but JMO could be interesting for them.

Good, sounds like Jarrod Parker.

The Mets may have been the only option for Manny given the size of his contract but they aren’t interested.

9:39pm: Steve Gilbert of MLB.com has a source saying the D’Backs don’t want to part with Conor Jackson, Max Scherzer, or Jarrod Parker for Teixeira.

yeah if we can’t get any of them then talking with them is worthless.

writers must think

we are having a fire sale and we’ll let Tex go for no return. The D-backs will have to include one of those 3 if they think they have a chance to get him. While 2 high draft picks don’t necessarily always pan out. I’d be hard pressed to believe Wren will give up Tex for anything less than 2 top prospects or 1 ML and 1 TP. I love how I keep reading that no one is willing to give anything for Tex. Someone will, to have that shot at a championship.

I say we end up with Tracy and a couple of average prospects.

by dwbrave on Jul 28, 2008 11:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I say

if thats all we get we keep Tex and hope we get an unprotected first round pick. No way we should settle for Tracy and a couple of average prospects. Wren does that then WHAT exactly do we have to show for the Tex trade? Tracy? hahahha thats funny.

And Dave O says...

”....you could do a lot worse than trading Tex to ‘Zona for Tracy and Micah Owings. Keep in mind, Owings is a Georgia boy and there are baseball people who seriously believe he could be converted to 1B (or the OF) some day if the pitching doesn’t pan out.”

by secondbass on Jul 28, 2008 11:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Tracy and Owings? I would take that right now. Now, lets see what we can get for Ohman, Kotsay, Francoeur, anyone else who has trade value. Except Yunel, Chipper, and Escobar.

See that worries me

Why in the world would he say something like that????

Tracy and Owings are SPARE PARTS!!!!

Arizona

If it’s not Tracy and Scherzer/Parker I will be pissed! I do not want Owings! I don’t want to here he’s a Georgia kid blahblahblah! He’s not that good and him coming to ATL might make him worse! I’ll even do Tex for Scherzer and a low A spec. Then trade Ohman straight up for Kendry Morales.

Grasping At Straws,

Who in their right minds would want to acquire Manny Ramirez at this point? Now add to that the filter of teams that could use him and/or afford him and you end up with the following list of teams: N/A. The BoSox aren’t trading Manny, no matter how hard they try, and I doubt they will try hard.

As for the Yanks, Posada was a .775 OPS guy for them this year and, unless Tex or some other regular there wants to try their hand at catching, they’re stuck with Molina handling the catching duties and batting a couple times a game. Giambi and Damon take up the DH spot when Melky or Sexson play the field, so that’s a pretty busy spot in the line-up. If Matsui makes it back, he’ll play there as well. They also have the option of playing Damon or Matsui in LF and having Nady play 1B. There’s really no void in that line-up. They’re backed full of high-priced sluggers and they’ve been pretty hot lately, so it’s not like they need hitting.

The Red Sox and Yanks will end up with Tex just like they ended up with Johan this offseason…

ok Will if you say so. hahahhahah thats pretty funny though Will but you have the right to your opinion.

ok anyway here is another rumor that just happened: “After the D-Backs made their due-diligence inquiries about Teixeira earlier this month, Atlanta came back with an offer that the D-Backs dismissed out of hand — first baseman Chad Tracy and minor league right-handers Max Scherzer and Jarrod Parker, according to two major league sources. Atlanta also brought up Conor Jackson.

The Braves and D-Backs "just don’t match up," the source said.”

Whoah now that is absurd by Wren but I like that. I like how Wren is tryin to get FULL value back. No way would that deal happen but I assume that Wren knew that just so that he maybe would be able to get one of those prospects back in return. It seems like Wren might have to be BLOWN away or we will just keep Tex. Thats fine with me, 2 draft picks are fine with me. Good job Wren dont settle for that garbage in Tracy, and Owings. That is pure and simple garbage. They get Tex AND 2 draft picks for that garbage? hahahhah no thanks. I hope the Rays do this deal, I really like there farm system.
