Around SBN: Four TCU Football Players Among 17 Arrested In Drug Ring

Deal(s) on the Table Right Now for Teixeira

According to David O'Brien at the AJC:

Just talked to Frank [Wren, Braves GM] for a while. Said they have deals on the table right now if they want to pull trigger. Deals that Braves are holding off on because they want to see if they can do better.

Said this is the last thing in the world he wanted to do, be trading players before the deadline. But that if you’ve got to do it, then you make sure you get the best possible deals to help your club win in years to come.

Things are going to get done. The people that said there's no market for Teixeira were way off. I've officially titled this mania "teixeirapalooza," and you can follow all the craziness through this link.

Yea, but

what are the players on the table?

Pass if it doesn’t include an elite prospect or two.

by NEBravesFan33 on Jul 28, 2008 9:19 PM EDT reply actions

that seems to be why they have passed

these first offers are always thin with what a team wants in return. they’ll go back and forth over the next several days and something will get worked out somewhere.

by gondeee on Jul 28, 2008 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

For me the best outcome would be Tex to the Red Sox and Ohman to the Rays because I think the best prospects would come from those two organizations.

by dwbrave on Jul 28, 2008 9:34 PM EDT reply actions

Chad Tracy and Micah Owings

would be a nightmare.

Talk about a team’s scraps for an elite hitter.

by NEBravesFan33 on Jul 28, 2008 9:37 PM EDT reply actions

Not IF

we play Owings at 1B and use Tracy off the bench (3B while Chipper is on the DL). Owings is liable to out perform Teixeira, Offense wise at least. LOL!

by scstrato on Jul 28, 2008 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Absolutely

I really wish the Braves would ease up on their demand for a first baseman in return.

by gondeee on Jul 28, 2008 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

I’ve always been a proponent of getting the best possible player(s) regardless of position, but then again – who do we have that could play there the rest of the year? Or in ‘09 for that matter?

by scstrato on Jul 28, 2008 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

It really doesn’t matter. The Braves aren’t a position where wins matter in 2008; playing Norton or Thorman there the rest of the season won’t subtract much. And who knows what happens in the off-season; a Tracy/RH bat platoon could be cobbled together, a trade could be made, etc.

by 17843 on Jul 28, 2008 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

WTF, might as well call up Kala while Thorman is in Beijing, see what he can do.

by VegasAces on Jul 29, 2008 9:25 AM EDT up reply actions

i’d pretty much start to go on a rampage if that happened.

by bigjoe on Jul 28, 2008 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Not sure why they are insisting that one in included. They should concentrate on getting the best possible return, regardless of position. Most people are too worried about who is going to play first next year. You really shouldn’t be. Sign a stop gap, or trade for one. Again, putting more talent into the farm system should be priority #1 for the Braves.

I actually think Frank Wren will pull a trigger on the deal sooner than Thursday. That has always been the way the Braves operate. Of course, they have never been sellers. But I can’t imagine what Braves fans would do if Tex got hurt.

From Mark Bowman at Braves.com

So many threads going now….have we seen this one yet? This was posted at 11:01pm:

“The Yankees, Rays and Angels are all showing definite interest and have seemingly emerged as the current favorites to land the switch-hitting first baseman…..
Wren and his top aides talked to at least six teams on Monday about Teixeira. One of those teams was the Diamondbacks. But with the D-Backs offering Chad Tracy instead of Conor Jackson, Wren seems more apt to deal with one of the AL contenders.”

Also mentions the Bay trade rumor to Pittsburgh:
“The Pirates have interest in shortstop Brent Lillibridge, who they developed before sending to the Braves in exchange for Adam LaRoche last year. In addition, they’d likely ask for outfielder Brandon Jones and a pair of prospects that are currently playing at the Class A level.”
I think we might have known that last bit….

by secondbass on Jul 28, 2008 11:49 PM EDT reply actions

And that's Bay FROM Pittsburgh

We haven’t gotten him yet, and certainly aren’t tyring to trade him back, like they’re apparently trying to do with Lillibridge….

Maybe

we trade Tex to the Rays. I would do this:

Rays get: Tex, Ohman, Kotsay(in case Rocco Baldelli does not come back)

Braves get: Davis, and Brignac or one of there top 10 prospects.

Listen it is severely doubtful that we get a talent like Davis for one of the Tex picks or for the Ohman pick. Its a great trade for us and a great trade for the Rays. The Rays also get 3 early picks. That would make the Rays a huge player in the World Series. Put Pena at DH and put Tex at First. And we get Davis and a top 10 prospect. How do you NOT do this deal if your either team? That is the AL East and they have a chance to have a special season. That trade would NOT even dent there farm system. Rays dont be like the Angels and not trade prospects. I mean no way should they trade Price. But it just seems like a no brainer to me.

Apparently the Diamondbacks bit is done with. They wouldn’t give up any of the three guys we wanted and now the Braves are giving them the finger and moving on. Good for us, not pulling a deal ‘just beacause’

by yondaime4 on Jul 29, 2008 12:57 AM EDT reply actions

Exactly youndaime4. I like the 2 draft picks more than the garbage there offering.

Quantity v. Quality.

Sweet! We got an offer from the D’backs! Wait, no Scherzer, Parker or Jackson? What??? This is Tex we’re talking about, here!!! The offers on the table are of the level that they’re still on the table. At this point, I’m right on the money since the latest news out of Arizona is Tracy and Owings for our boy…

Please check out my blog at http://thefulldeck.blogspot.com/ , now redesigned and recommited!

yeah

and with the latest rumor you see the Braves are NOT settling for that either and they shouldn’t.

Tracy & Owings

Tracy is the DBacks first baseman for the next two years and he crushes right handed pitching. You have to platoon him vs. LHP, but it’s easy to find a good right handed hitter for that. He’s much better than anything the Braves could put at first after Tex leaves.

Owings has been a league average starter in his short career and he’s 25 years old. He’s better than anything else you can put out as a third starter this year. Plus his bat is better than anything you can put at first base when Tex leaves.

There is no way the DBacks would offer three years of those two players for only 58 games of Teixiera, Esp. in a year in which the DBack’s can’t be competitive in the playoffs given they’ll be on the road, and their offense sucks even with Tex. They are building for the long run.

Go hit up Anaheim. That’s the only team that should give up signficant value for Tex. They can win the WS this year, but not with their current offense, they won’t even get home field advantage. And they can re-sign Tex.

by DBacksArb on Jul 29, 2008 3:36 AM EDT reply actions

Well

Im sure Wren WILL go hit up the Angels. If thats the best yall can do then NO Tex for yall. Watch Webb and Haren waste away without anything to show for it. I hope Tex goes to a team in the AL and then faces your D-Backs in the World Series and is the MVP of the World Series and IS the difference maker in who wins the World Series. I would laugh so hard. Hope it happens. But wait you would probably say at least we got to the World Series. Keep tellin yourself that if you think that.

by rockybull on Jul 29, 2008 8:33 AM EDT reply actions

Ouch

I guess I should have said Owings was a league average starter. Don’t know if his two month slump signals an injury, bad luck or maybe he’s not as good as I thought. Either way the braves shouldn’t want him and the Dbacks shouldn’t sell low on him.

And I’m sorry if my honesty offended you rockybull. Right now the DBacks have a 57% chance of making the playoffs according to the baseball prospectus. They are 7 games behind the Brewers to get a home field playoff series. Being the worst playoff team makes them about 45% to win each series. This means they are 11% to even make the world series and probably 5% to win it. Tex can improve us by 2 wins in the second half, but that doesn’t change those odds much. And it makes it unlikely that we’ll face anyone who has Tex in the world series as well.

Look at our roster and then tell me this team is ready to win now. We’ve got a two to four year window to build a better team, and since we can’t re-sign tex, he can’t be part of it.

by DBacksArb on Jul 29, 2008 11:14 AM EDT reply actions

you do

remember the Cardinals of 2006 right? Yeah well that year there were no clear favorites to win it all even though many thought the Tigers would. Your D-Backs team gets hot at the RIGHT time anything can happen especially this year.
