Heap v Victorino
I'm going off of H0SS's someone... put a contract out on Victorino.
I've been a catcher pretty much all of my life and I've had my share of collisions, but what Victorino did was just classless. We all know there is a fine line when runners and catchers meet, and Shane crossed it big time. I've watched that replay over and over and it makes me sick knowing that Shane got away with pretty much a tackle of mccann.
We all know the league wont do s about it so I'll put it out there, Shane better be watching his head the next time they play. He should take one in the head for that cheap shot.
Am I in the wrong for thinking that?

What about Utley?
I had the tv muted when Utley slid into McCann so I don’t know what Jow and John said, but it looked to me like Utley lowered his shoulder into Mac’s head as well – even more suspicious than Victorino, I thought.
yeah honestly the Utley slide looked worse to me. I’ve caught many a games in my year and I if someone had thrown an elbow at me like that it would have been game on. I don’t like Victorino much either, but my first look at that slide was that he ducked his head to protect himself from McCann’s catchers mask and he just caught McCann funny.
If it wasn't the 2nd hard play at the plate...
in the game against arguably our best player in the game, then I’d be less upset at the fact that Victorino didn’t attempt a ‘slide by’ reaching out with his left hand. And if this play at the plate ‘mattered’ at that point in the game, then I wouldn’t be as upset as I am at the fact that he led with his helmet instead of a shoulder or forearms (what if it was Heap’s ribs or a knee?). Don’t get me wrong…I don’t think Victorino purposely tried to hurt Brian McCann, but dear Pujols…please buzz a couple of high and tights in response!
Add it to the list
I cannot stand Victorino, I’ve never liked him. This just adds to the list. He’s one of those baseball players who is either below average or average at best, yet puts up sick numbers against the Braves.
++ on the headhunting, since Blaine is our flamethrower these days, I say let er rip! When he wakes up he’ll think he’’s back in Hawaii and a coconut hit him in the head. :-)
Got the Braves as my NL and White Sox as my AL!
I just saw this on BBTN...
And I’m surprised that the hit batsman didn’t happen in this game. That shit doesn’t fly. Victorino went in like a torpedo, and Utley intentionally flew his elbow. Classless and dirty.
My feelings
Are that i hate those s.o.b.’s and i can’t wait until we play them again so we can put soriano in or whoever is throwin 98 and put one upside Utley’s head and knock his ass out cause knocking him out would put their team in worse shape or victorino for the actual incident either way one upside a head. and i now hate the phils just as much as the muts
Hehe
don’t let your emotions get the best of of you, no one can be hated more than the Mets!
Got the Braves as my NL and White Sox as my AL!
I saw nothing wrong with Victorino's slide...
... Utley’s, on the other hand, was very questionable.
- Oh, Bobby. -
Great Pic
Dirty…..unnecessary…..its not like the phills were losing or like it was the bottom of the ninth….

i thought utley’s was a lil rough with the elbow to the head, but i dont think it was intentional at all. theres no way victorino slides into home in that situation Heap had the plate blocked perfectly and victorino couldnt just stop, he only option was to try to run over McCann. Unfortunately, Heap got hurt, but theres no way either play was malicious or anything and i dont ever think headhunting as an appropriate reaction, even if headhunting is the action that necessitates retaliation
"We win today, that's two in a row... if we win tomorrow, that's called a winning streak. It has happened before..."
That shit wouldn't fly in the NFL
There is a reason why the NFL fines your ass when you lower your helmet, or lead with your helmet in the NFL. ITS DANGEROUS. The person taking the brunt of the blow is usually relatively defenseless. In this case Heap was basically stationary. If this were another sport that “Slide” would have cost Victorino $25,000.
I’ll go ahead and agree that running him over was the only play, and hurting McCann was not his intention, but you can’t lead with your helmet like that, its not right, and I hope he gets plunked hard for it next time they play.
Hizilla has a point
If it wouldn’t be legal in the NFL, why is it legal in baseball?
I have never understood that rule anyway. What did the catcher do to deserve getting run over?
It has ruined more careers than it is worth, IMO.
Clean Play
If the catcher doesn’t want to get run over, the catcher shouldn’t block the plate.
When I was growing up, I was taught if the catcher is blocking the plate the baserunner should knock him over. More recently, I’ve heard the new “etiquette” is something like this: If the catcher gives you part of the plate you should slide. If he’s on top of it, you have to plow him.
I'm sorry
I completely understand running over the catcher when he’s in front of the plate and in the baseline. You have to in that situation. However, from what I saw McCann was on top of the plate, therefore Victorino could have easily slid. You say that the new etiquette is that if that catcher is on top of the plate then you have to plow him. Problem is that every catcher is on top of the plate on a play at home. You’re telling me that McCann had every inch of the plate blocked so that Victorino couldn’t slide his hand in? Ridiculous. Dirty play all the way around. If you must plow him, lead with your shoulder and NEVER GO FOR THE HEAD.
After further review
After watching it again, McCann wasn’t even on top of the plate, he was out in front of it. There was tons of room for Victorino to slide. No reason for what happened.
ultimately victorino is gonna do whats best for him, if he slides theres a high probabibity McCann slide steps and dislocates Victorino’s shoulder, and to the guy who said VIctorino knew McCann didnt have control of he ball, thats ridiculous, theres no way Victorino could know that and McCann did have contorl of the ball
"We win today, that's two in a row... if we win tomorrow, that's called a winning streak. It has happened before..."
I'm that guy...
and watching the replay the ball was out of his glove around his chest protector before he ever made the move to tag. In the replay Mac received the ball before Victorino was even in the picture…meaning victorino chose contact vs. slide by…that was my point.
Mac's comments from the Braves site
He was just trying to score,” McCann said. “I’d have done the same thing if I was trying to score. There wasn’t anything wrong with it. We’re buddies. It was real clean. He plays the game hard. “
Victorino remained on the field until McCann sat up and called the Braves catcher after the game.
“I was just trying to [score] and the only way I thought I could be safe was to jar the ball loose,” Victorino said. “I talked to him a second ago and he said he was fine. ... I just wanted to let him know I wasn’t trying to be dirty.”
Jar the ball loose...
There are other ways other than leading with you head into the catchers head. As the picture above shows there’s no reason to lead with your head against a catcher. Shane could have hit heap in the chest and I wouldn’t have had a problem with it.
I’m a catcher and I’ve been run over before. Never have I had a guy try to head hunt on me. I’m either cut down in the legs or the guy tries to plow through the chest protector. My neck hurt just watching that play.
Chris
Mac is a class act
Mac is a class act. I know it is scary when something like this happens. I remember when this happened with Erstad and Johnny Estrada. I think the Braves felt more conflicted on that particular play. Some felt that it was a clean play in a close game, others thought that Estrada gave him a lot of the plate and he should have slid. The next night Horacio Ramirez threw a pitch behind him. Erstad didn’t pitch a fit and after the game said he had no problem with it (didn’t charge the mound or gesture at the pitcher). After the game he acknowledged that he understood that Ramirez was sending the message that he would protect his teammates.
Not Dirty
If the Bravos had a couple of Victorinos in their lineup they would be in the lead.
He plays hard and brings it to the yard every day, as do Utley, Rollins, etc.
To win you need a few “asses” and we have pretty boys named Frenchy can’t find his ass with a flashlight.
He's Not an Ass
His intention was not to hurt Mac. His intention was to score. He stopped and checked on Mac after the play. The baseline belongs to the runner. The catcher stands in his way at his peril. If Brian is two feet in front of the plate, Victorino slides.
Time was, pitchers thru up and in, runners took out the second basemen during a double play, etc. and it wasn’t considered “dirty”. There wasn’t a need to retaliate over hard nosed clean plays. A dirty play was when Enos Slaughter deliberately drover his spikes into Jackie Robinson’s leg when he running out a grounder (ya know hit his leg instead of 1st base).
You still...
...don’t go helmet to helmet. Can’t you get it through your skull? Not to mention watching the replay over and over Victorino had plenty of opportunity to slide and enough room.
I promise not to lead with my head
Rain Delay,
I understand your point. A couple of things:
a. Plays like that happen quick. It’s not like Victorino stops for a second and thinks “I’ll try to go helmet to helmet with him. My guess is you probably don’t buy that. We may disagree on this point, but I understand your point of view. You may be right I may be wrong. I am not rooting for head to head contact in any event.
b. Victorino could have slid. He didn’t have to. I don’t think he should have. I believe that part of Mac’s body was touching the plate when the ball arrived. That means he’s in the baseline. Catchers can avoid contact. On this point I respectfully disagree
c. Organized baseball has rules regarding this sort of thing. I am a former high school coach in South Carolina. Runners were not allowed to run over catchers. If they did they were called out and ejected from the game. MLB could do this. They have not.
Your objection is based on your feelings of what is right and wrong, acceptable or not acceptable, what is safe or not safe. But it is not against the rules.
