Minor League Recaps: 7/23

Richmond @ Scranton/WB - Postponed

Mississippi 6, Birmingham 4 Game 1 (7 Innings)

  • K. Kaaihue 2-4 HR(11), 2 RBI, 2 K
  • R. Gorecki 0-1 3 BB, 2 SB(11)

This game was tied at 4 in the top of the 7th and then Kala Kaaihue came in and hit a two run homer to give Kevin Gunderson the chance to get his second win of the season. Big time homer there.

Mississippi 6, Birmingham 5 Game 2 (7 Innings)

  • K. Kaaihue 2-4 2 2B, RBI, K
  • J. Schafer 2-3 RBI
  • V. Pope 2-3

Kala Kaaihue seems to be getting his power back after being mostly powerless for a large portion of July. Jordan Schafer is hitting a paltry .217 and has just been bad in July hitting an unwholesome (the squeamish may want to look away) .173. Todd Redmond pitched all but one out of this game giving up 5 runs. There was a long rain delay in this game in the middle of the 2nd inning and Redmond came back out and pitched when the Birmingham pitcher didn't. You gotta like a guy that goes out and takes one for the team like that and still gets the win.Oh, Also this team is now 21-12 (I don't think their record is updated yet on the site so I am extrapolating) and leading their division by 3 games. Amazing.

Frederick 2, Myrtle Beach 3

  • G. Hernandez 2-5 2B, 2 K
  • T. Jones 3-5 HR(16), 3 RBI
  • T. Flowers 0-2 2 BB, 2 K
  • J. Bennett 1IP 1H 0R 0BB 0K

Late inning heroics everywhere tonight. Travis Jones gets a walk off single in the bottom of the 9th inning to score speedy Gorkys Hernandez. Travis Jones is having a great July and has made his season into a pretty decent one in the process. He does, in fact, lead the team in home runs and has a similar skill set to Brandon Hicks with a little lightening in the bat but a lot of strikes outs paired off with some solid plate discipline. Anyone think there is an outside chance these guys are our DP tandem in the future? I think Johnson has more potential than Jones, but Jones may be good enough to make the Braves split the difference and trade Johnson in the next couple of seasons when he starts making good arbitration money.

Rome 10, West Virginia 12

  • J. Heyward 2-5 3B, K
  • C. Johnson 3-5 2B, RBI, K
  • J. Locke 4IP 10H 6R 2BB 3K

I forgot to write this review for some reason last night so here it is now. I didn't make it to the game because when I got up it was raining and I didn't think the game would get played and I didn't really feel like sitting in that weather anyways. I'm glad I didn't go, because my favorite pitcher got hammered and Freddie Freeman didn't even play. I would have been livid I think.

Danville 1, Bluefield 4

  • J. Gilmore 2-4
  • S. Kent 1IP 0s

Somewhere David Ross is laughing because no one in this game pitched a No-Hitter or struck out 16 batters. I mean serioiusly, they had a full 9 innings. They could have piled up 24 Ks in that amount of time. I'm writing a formal letter of complaint.

Braves 7, Yankees 1

  • C. Culver 3-5 2B, RBI, K
  • J. Hanson 2-4 2B, RBI, BB, 2 SB(3)
  • B. Oberholtzer 6IP 3H 0R 0BB 1K

Any time, any way we beat the Yankees I'm down with it.

Evening, commissioner...

I guess I should be one to talk.
There's nights that I can't even walk.
There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.
