Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

UPDATE 7/31 - TC Meetup Day

UPDATED as of July 31st

Alrighty, I hate to do this on the fly, but I wanted to find out as much facts as I could prior to making an update on this.

I emailed ACFB, and received confirmation about the Smoltz food drive - It is still on:  John Smoltz will be signing autographs with a minimum donation of 25 (one autograph) or maximum of 50 (two) cans of food at Turner Field's Monument Grove between 2-3 p.m.

I can't stress it enough, if you're interested; get there early.  They will do a cut-off, and then you'll be left donating food without getting to see Smoltzie.

Tickets

Nothing's been pre-purchased.  Considering there are only about 8-10 people verbally confirmed people showing up, this is what I am suggesting:  Meet-up location; upper deck at ChopHouse/Tomahawk Tavern at like 4:30, maybe prior to first pitch, who knows.  We'll iron it out.  You can get drinks there, stand around in the shade while watching from the outfield or something.

Seating wise, since nothing's been purchased, I'd suggest somewhere kind of out of the way, where it will be cheap and relatively easy to sit and watch from.  I'm thinking sections 417-421 (three possible sections), since those areas are generally deserted, no matter what.  Tix should be anywhere from $6-8, a student ID will get you half-price, or 2-for-1, however you want to look at it.

Thoughts, suggestions, share 'em.  Who cares about the buzz and news around the baseball, let's make the best of a bad situation, and try to enjoy an afternoon game and play some spoiler.

__________________________________________________________________

I figure discussing this after a nice win would be more kosher than trying to talk about it through the blinding rage of another agonizing loss.  Good thing is, we don't face our daddies, the Nationals, back here, until after Labor Day.

Star-divide

So anyway, the idea's been tossed around, there are a couple of people committed, but there's been little discussion on the topic lately, and with August 3rd now only two weeks and some change away, now's as good as time as any to throw some ideas up on the board.  And gondeee, the most active SBNation blog owner ever, has made no mention one way or the other his thoughts on the matter, or let alone if he endorses it, so for the time being, this is for all intents and purposes "non-sanctioned," and may or may not have anything to do with TC depending on the success of the turnout and/or if bigjoe gets arrested for public intoxication/disturbance of the peace.

When:  Saturday, August 2nd
Time:
Game time of 3:55 p.m. (FOX-TV Broadcast)
Opponent:
Milwaukee Brewers

Interested members: ???
Group tickets: ???
Meetup place: ???
Meetup time: ???

As you can see by all the question marks, there is great reason why this stuff needs to/should be ironed out before the date in question, so that it doesn't turn into one gigantic fustercluck, nobody finds anyone, and on Monday morning there is a fanpost consisting of the words "epic," "fail," "I didn't see you," "I didn't know," and several pictures of cats in compromised positions, and crying babies.

1.  First off, who IS coming?  I encourage those who ARE showing up to comment with definite answers.  Maybes need not comment as much, unless you're pretty darn sure of it.  Also, I encourage users to recommend this post, so that it sticks to the top, and won't get bumped off as quickly by an influx of post-loss/trade-rumor fanposts, Pujols knows there's still plenty of time for plenty of those to surface.  And it makes me look like I write important stuff, too.

ICING ON THE CAKE:  This may or may not help make up your mind for you.  That particular Saturday is also tentatively scheduled for John Smoltz's second annual autograph signing session for Atlanta Community Food Bank "John Smoltz Strike Out Hunger" program.

People are to bring 25 canned goods for one autograph on any memorabilia you bring, or 50 canned goods for two.  No more than that is allowed.

Event typically starts two hours prior to game time, but I'd highly recommend arriving earlier, because a line will no doubt form, and there is a cut-off point.  To put it into perspective, I showed up 3.5 hours early last season, and suffered through dehydration and sunburn to get a Smoltz-signed baseball, and still almost missed the cut-off point.

Also, this is a very cut and dry event - no matter how friendly Smoltz looks in the photo on the link, ushers and security herd the line as quickly as possible, and Smoltz himself is kinda in auto pilot, signing everything without many words to patrons.  If you want a photo with him in the shot, not necessarily looking back at the camera, have someone else with you to take the photo.

2.  Tickets - I suppose the bigger question is asking if you all want to sit together and watch the game in the stands, or if we should just meet up at like the Chop House upper deck, and just kinda mill about, socialize, before dispersing to our individual seats.  So far, I haven't seen close to 25 members show interest to this, which is the number we'd need to be eligible for any sort of group packaging discount or anything of the sort.

Personally, what I was thinking of was not necessarily pre-buying, and either finding a scalper to sell me a cheapo, or just buying a general-admission ticket on the cheap side, and just going to socialize; and if not, then attempting to enjoy the game wherever my ticket might be.  Thoughts, ideas, and suggestions also very welcome.

3.  Meetup Place/Time - Well considering most people will likely want a Smoltz autograph I'm assuming, I'd say a prior to first-pitch meeting would be a little harder.  Or rather one, that has everyone showing up.  So I'm under the general assumption that the best meet-up time/place might be during the game, which leads me to suggest the upper patio at the Chop House.  Any other ideas or suggestions would be welcome.

So I guess that's about it, about what this discussion should be about.  bigjoe wants to go to Carrabba's after the game, since he's clearly been suckered into the barrage of Carrabba's commercials we've been forced to endure this season thus far.  I also hear he's going to trade in his dad's car for a Navigator with 36" spinning rims, and when any of us tries to call him, like thirty times, none of us will be able to get in touch with him, because he'll be shooting hoops with the townies blasting that Braves song by some group called Whiskey Falls.

Discussion, ideas, recommendations highly encouraged.  This is a good opportunity to actually put some faces to the avatars, and to put your money to where your mouths have been all season long.  I don't imagine anybody as bad people, and would like to know a lot of folks for what we do have in common - love for Braves baseball.

Okay, I was just blowing smoke there.  I really just want an excuse to wear my Jamie Kotsay shirt, and have people around that actually get it.

Jamie Kotsay is old news...

I guess I should be one to talk.

because I’m still a maybe, but it is worth all the effort and gas just for Smoltz’s auto.

Just show up

We’ll get C.C. Sabathia pitching that day probably, and then we’ll destroy him. And then you can get your brasato at Carrabba’s, where you’ll make one snide comment that will make a drunk bigjoe go off the handle and tackle you over a table, and then you’ll both get arrested, while any others of us who go pretend like we don’t know you two. Sure you’ll have marks on your permanent record, but you’ll have a Smoltz autograph, and several new BFFs in the process. Isn’t that worth it?

As far as I know, I should be able to make it. I’m up for seats under $25.

If we buy the tix at the window, you know they’re 1/2 price for upper-level if you flash a student ID, right? I sit behind home plate for $8 on a regular basis, with an old ID card. (They don’t really look.)

Ronnie's such a dillweed...

even the townies laugh at him shooting tiny hoops with that idiot Chuck.

On Friday I’ll see if the free Clark sec.423 tix are still available for that day, just in case. Oh, wait, that section will be in complete sun the whole game. Ew. I’ll check anyway.

by royhobbs on Jul 23, 2008 8:50 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Definitely.

Between being violently angry and violently ill, there may not be much left of me if he starts.
Just seeing him in the dugout on TV gives me dry heaves.
However, when most of the people in the Ted collectively vomit if he is announced as pitcher, his feelings will get hurt, which will strain his spleen, and he’ll be out for the season.

by Lizziebeth on Jul 23, 2008 1:11 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Did you see him do his little dance in the dugout with BMac last night? BMac was especially cute before the game—feelin’ frisky…

by Lauren T. on Jul 23, 2008 3:54 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No…I got stuck at work when it started storming (it’s a couple hundred uncovered yards to the parking deck) and had to listen on the radio while the thunder and lightning raged. Probably a good thing; if I had seen mr. glass dancing in the dugout I prob would have thrown something through the TV. Grrrr.
But sorry I missed BMac all giddy!

I probably won’t make it, since i’‘m going to the game on July 30th. and i don’t wanna be Anal McAnly here, but that would be August 2nd, not the 3rd.

I’m going to the 30th, 31st, and the 2nd, which I fixed, thanks. Come out, be social, and get a Smoltz autograph!

That means you were like 10-15 people ahead/behind me. They cut the line off but gladly took their cans and donations about 20 people after me.

yeah, i was near the back of the people that got stuff signed, and there was some random guy right ahead of us who kept telling people when and where they were gonna cut off the line. we never figured out who he was, or if he was full of shit.

Really early

Repeat: really early. Game time is 3:55 p.m., gates open/promotion “begins” at 1:55 p.m., lines will probably start as early as 10:30 a.m. outside of the gates.

The thing is, I haven’t heard anything about it lately, so I’m not even sure if it’s going to occur. I’ll check the program at tonight’s game, which should provide more insight, but this is something Smoltz has been doing for a long time, regardless.

thanks for the advice. but one more question: do they like take your cans up when u get there? like u don’t have to stand in line for like four hours holdin 25 cans…right?

Ha ha ha. Yeah, right...

Just kidding, he speaks the truth!
Let me say, I have nothing against people drinking, it used to be one of my favorite hobbies (or was it my only one?!), but I did have some trepidation that bigjoe was going to be like one of the guys who sat near me Wednesday night. They brought oodles of Fuji water bottles with rum or vodka in it, got slap-ass drunk while screaming derogatorily at every player – I couldn’t even tell which team they were actually rooting for. Fortunately the two loudest passed out at the top of the fourth and the rest got the munchies and went to get food and smoke.

So yeah…last night – great, witty company at a weird game (Mr. Glass – 2 ribbies, are you kidding me?? Jug, I expected to see a post from you like that!)

To recap...again!

This is the latest count I have.

Confirmed attending:
royhobbs
bigjoe
lizziebeth
cgilmo78
JBinAtl
Euruproktos +1

Game time 3:55. Main gates open 1:25. Temp expected to be 93, so put on sunscreen! Much of the Ted will be in the sun at that time of day, especially the home side.

Braves Events:
Smoltz is doing the can drive in Monument Grove from 2-3. I gather that royhobbs recommends getting there at least by 10-10:30 a.m. to get in line and successfully snag an autograph.
Steven Curtis Chapman/Jonny Diaz (yes, MattE’s brother) concert following the game.

bigjoe event: Carrabbas: brasato and mama’s saw-uce

Reminder: you can bring your own food and drink, as long as drinks are in plastic bottles. Small backpacks are ok. Cameras allowed, but depending on the security guard, long lenses will not be permitted. Small, soft coolers permitted.

I usually get there early and take pics of BP, but if Smoltzie’s going to be in Monument Grove, I want to get some close shots of him. There are no ins and outs on your ticket at the Ted. I’d like to do the 2 for 1 tickets with somebody or else the $1 ones and then just hang out in the Top of the Chop as rh suggested (sitting in a section together is good [but maybe one not in full sun], too. We may be able to talk Hazel into it in 418). If there’s a drinking contest (or not), I’ll be glad to be a DD for anybody, as long as you don’t live over 40 miles away!

I’m sure I forgot something, but I’ve got to get going to work…

by Lizziebeth on Aug 1, 2008 9:48 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

we need a common meeting point outside of the stadium before anyone (read: me) buys tickets or anything silly like that

Following the Braves...one long hard drink at a time.

by bigjoe on Aug 1, 2008 1:12 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed! Or we need people to post what they are (at least) thinking of doing...

so we can be ready at the ticket window and have a plan B ready, too.

No one has indicated that they will be standing in line for the can thing, so…

I am throwing out the idea of meeting at 1 p.m. in the shade directly across the “pavilion” from Dale’s #3 in Monument Grove – that’s the big concrete pavilion area in the front of the stadium. #3 is near the museum entrance. Feel free to post protests/agreements/alternates. For ID purposes, I have waist length straight brown hair and a crescent moon tattoo on my right ankle.

For instance, I am toying with the idea of getting there, meeting and buying tickets, going in and taking pics of BP, coming out and taking pics of JS, buying a $1 Skyline ticket (they go on sale when the gates open) and coming back in and meeting back up with you guys. Unless we are all just going to hang out at Top of the Chop (which might be the case if we can’t get seats together), then I might just go for the $1 ticket and not worry about BP so much. This is also contingent that I can find a safe, cheap place to park that early!

Oh, yeah, and don’t forget to factor in traffic from the 75/85 connector repaving/construction…

by Lizziebeth on Aug 1, 2008 3:24 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’m not going early for an autograph (already have one) and don’t plan on getting there until like 3:00-3:15. Ideally, I was just going to go straight for the Chop House, and hang out and attempt to watch the game from a railing; no matter, I’ve made my phone number available to a few people.

When the game starts, that’s likely where I’ll be, at the Top of the chop, rocking the J. KOTSAY #21 shirt.

screw an autograph. i’ve done a total of nothing today, and will most likely do nothing tomorrow, so i’ll probably be at the park nice and early…i’m thinking i’ll leave here around 1:30 or so. even though i’m going to BP today, i kinda wanna go tomorrow too.

They might not do BP tomorrow. If they play a day game following a night game, they usually don’t do BP, sometimes for bench players, and those who want to take extra.

but its not REALLY a day game tomorrow…what, players aren’t happy with 8 hours of sleep?

Feedback is good! I was not aware of the day-after-night-no-BP.
Will confirm more later…keep getting interrupted.

So this sounds like a plan to do $1 skyline tickets ...

and hang out at the Top of the Chop during the game. Works for me.

Cancel the thought of meeting at 1 p.m.

I still plan on getting to the park before then, so if you get there early and get bored, call rh and he can call me and we can meet.

stupid question. like, really stupid question. are there any ATMs in the park? really don’t wanna walk across the street for one or have to randomly drive around buckhead almost getting into accidents at every light

Bleh. Yeah, there are many SUNTRUST atms located throughout the park.

Don’t run the light (in any direction) at Lenox & Peachtree – it has cameras and you’ll get a nice $100-120 picture of yourself caught in the act via USPS in a couple of weeks.
If it’s still there and if you haven’t found it already, there’s a “sports bar” called the Bucket Shop in the bottom of an office building on the NE corner of that intersection – bare bones kind of place when I was last there, but they serve food until 2 a.m. Of course, if you go south of that intersection on Peachtree to Piedmont Rd. (Rooms-To-Go on one corner), then go east (left), you’ll eventually run into some cheaper food like Krystal, Chick-fil-A, Waffle House, etc. There’s also a Rock Bottom Brewery behind the RTG, and a Jason’s Deli and some other small eateries in the adjoining shopping center. Everything else in BH pretty much has a neon sign letting you know they’re there.

If you guys really do go to Carrabba’s after the game, I’ll meet you there. Give me a ring? :)

I'm jealous...

I guess I should be one to talk.
There's nights that I can't even walk.
There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.

Me too.

I’m sitting here working on a final and thinking how much it sucks compared to going to the ballpark. Granted, I have less distance to travel to get to Atlanta, but it’s still far enough.

I'll be there...

...but I’ve got credentials, so I’ll be on the field and in the press box. I usually sit on the right side of the press box in the second level as you’re looking at it from the stands.

Thanks

for taking the time to crawl out from under the open beer tap and come by. Just kidding, thanks for making the trek all the way around the Ted to meet up and chat & laugh with us! It was a pleasure and an honor to shake hands with the guy who started this whole thing and brought a whole new facet to my love of Braves baseball. Can’t wait to read those clubhouse reports you’ve posted…

Props to you

for being such a true fan and making the long road trip – then suffering through rain, heat, no pool at the hotel, and oh, yeah, losing…
...but you made it fun, nonetheless! Ditto royhobbs.

Yep, everybody that didn’t come sorely missed out on some great company. I don’t care if we did lose, it was a well-spent afternoon.
