Natspos @ Bravos: Rubber Game
Washington @ Atlanta
Jo-Jo Reyes starts against former Atlanta Braves golden boy Odalis Perez -- interestingly they both are pretty shitty this year, though if you've watched some of Jo-Jo's starts you'll know that he should have a much better record than he has. He actually has some of the worst run support in the league -- 125th out of 132 starters in the NL -- that's a measly 2.55 runs per start (save for the four starts that Jeff Bennett (2.16) made). Jurrjens (5.27) has the best run support of any Braves starter except for John Smoltz (6.33) and Tom Glavine (6.07).
The surgeon needed some RS last night as he seemed to have some rust on his arm from the break. Was it just me or did we have base runners and runners in scoring position in every inning only to ground out or line out or fly out or strike out or Francoeur out?
Here are the x-Braves Nationals players vs. us this season:
Willie Harris - .455 BA w/ 2 3B, 3 2B and 5 RBI
Ryan Langerhans - .571 BA w/ 1 3B, and 2 2B
Pete Orr - 1-for-2.... anyone who allows Pete Orr to get a hit is horrible
At least we've handled Johnny Estrada, who is just 3-for-20 against us
Oh, and Odalis Perez has a 1.80 ERA against us in five innings...
Playoffs?... what?

Let's win this one!!
Gone to the game with a new (to me) telephoto lens and a ‘fancy-dancy’ SLR/digital camera; maybe I’ll snag some decent pics (if I can figure out how to work the camera on the way there).

The attack...
...of the former Braves was really disheartening last night. Watching Langerhans hit everything just a little bit harder than Blanco or Francouer could track down, and Harris’s forty warning track putouts was glimpses of what made both of them welcome talents in their tenures with us.
Yesterday was one of those games you go to, and losing doesn’t feel like much of an option, seeing as how it’s against the Nationals. But I suppose John Lannan is much like last year’s Jason Bergmann – we crush him in his debut against us, but then can’t buy a hit afterwards. It’s not that we had too many LOBs, he was figuring out the weaknesses, and pitching around guys to get to guys he knew he could better out.

+1
When I see guys like Andruw Jones, Grady Sizemore, or Torii Hunter make a great catch, it’s a great catch. When I see Greg Norton make a great catch, it’s usually as a result of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and by a wink of Pujols, he recovers, and manages to salvage/prevent a double.

i’m glad he got an E on that throw. There’s usually never a time when I think he’s NOT going to make that throw, but when he misses, he’s trying too hard to make the play and be the man, clearly, b/c he only misses high, by a mile. He can make a decent play, most likely still get that runner, if he just sorta throws it in there.
Remember last year he had 2 assists at the plate, and another opp in either the 8th or 9th, and the ball just SAILED into the backstop net….. those first two were righteous though

I always like the umps that throw the new balls to the pitcher themselves, and admire their own follow-through, instead of handing the ball to the catcher. Those are the ones I think have some unfulfilled baseball dreams.
Personally, my favorite ump is Tom Hallion. He has a generous strike-zone, which leads to interesting baseball, and his ring-up move is the best in the business.

..and if anyone thinks this is bad umpiring – go to a Triple A game when you get a chance. I don’t know about in the International League, but over here in the Pacific Coast League there are some truly horrible umpires and a couple that make Guccione look like a saint.

I've always been curious
On how the review process goes. I know you’re reading Living on the Black as well, and there is a great wealth to what umps go through, but even this is beyond normalcy. I don’t think there is enough reprimand for umps, and they all collectively need to stop being so paranoid about “being shown up.”

There is a lot of mention
To some very crooked sounding things; like showing up and ump, and then when the umps are together, they whether, it’s inadvertent or not, influence the other umps on their crew to never forgive or forget a player, which could lead to some bad baseball in the future.

He is also the on who called Conor Jackson back to the plate after he called 4 balls, because the scoreboard said 3-2.
So not only is his strike zone ridiculous, he can’t count to 4 either.

This game isn't worth full attention
The ump’s a dick, squeezing the pitchers, Oj-Oj couldn’t pitch, former Braves are destroying us, and the hitters just don’t seem like they’re going to pull out this deficit. As much as I hope I’m wrong, I’m glad I didn’t go to this game.

Don’t seem to inspire like they used to. Ozzie Guillen can have a hell of a career being used as hired-gun inspirational speaker to struggling teams, to get in the locker rooms of teams and grilling players to hopefully light some fires underneath some asses.

At the Ted
When the game enters a “realistic” situation in the 9th inning, with the Braves down like 3-4 runs, they always play these prepared packages of the Braves beating whomever team is in town in a 9th inning comeback situation. Against the Nationals, they always show highlights of a game in 2006 where the Braves came back from a 2-run 9th inning deficit capped off with Jeff Francoeur’s walk-off grand slam.
I wonder what they’d play with a seven-run deficit? I also wonder that if the Braves made a miraculous comeback, if SportsCenter would gush over it like a game where the Yankees overcame a 9-run deficit against the Rangers?
Just some thoughts, since y’know there’s not really a good game on or anything.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
by royhobbs on Jul 20, 2008 3:28 PM EDT 0 recs
Well...
they would have to show us coming back from at least 5 or 6 runs, wouldn’t they? Can’t be a lot of those to choose from.
As for the SportsCenter question, the only way they would gush over the Braves making a comeback is if it were to involve a knife fight or something like that.

Every time I come in here and post something...
the Nationals score more runs.
This is truly depressing. What is going on with our pitching? The Nationals’ hitters supposedly suck, and they have 14 runs in the 5th inning, after scoring 8 last night and 6 on Friday. Normally five runs for us would give us a good chance. Like I said earlier, it looks like the pitching is giving up the ghost after fighting the good fight for the first half.
I need to cheer up. I need to quit watching the Braves for a while. But I can’t. I need an intervention.
by sddbaker on Jul 20, 2008 3:41 PM EDT 0 recs
Is it just me
But are the Nationals not playing nice-nice with the whole “let’s not make the other team feel too bad by not blowing them out too much” rule?
Then again, the Texans Rangers hung 30 runs on the Ravens Orioles last year.
