Minor League Recaps: 7/2

Richmond 4, Norfolk 8

  • J. Anderson 2-5
  • S. Thorman 2-4 2B, HR(15), K

Honestly, there wasn't a whole lot of good that came from this game. Thorman hit a meaningless homer and he appears to turned into somewhat an all or nothing type of guy. I guess we knew that. Damian Moss isn't going to help the team in the future either since he gave up 8 runs in less than 2 innings tonight. But we knew that too.

Mississippi 6, Montgomery 4

  • J. Schafer 1-4 2 K
  • R. Gorecki 1-3 HR(5)
  • G. Creek 2-4 2B, K
  • K. Kaaihue 2-4 RBI, K
  • K. Medlen 6IP 2H 1R 1BB 5K

Kris Medlen's transition from starter to reliever is still a success and he appears to be getting more and more comfortable as the season progresses. We have to remember this guy was a DOMINANT reliever in Rome and Myrlte Beach last year. I don't know why he struggled so much this year as a reliever but as a starter his ERA is now 2.63. Not bad at all.

Myrtle Beach 8, Potomac 0

  • G. Hernandez 2-5 2 SB(10)
  • B. Hicks 1-3 3B, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K
  • T. Jones 2-4 2B, HR(12), 2 RBI, K
  • C. Rodriguez 1-3 HR(6), 2 RBI, BB, K

This team really does have a ton of power. Four players have 10+ homers and another 4 have more than 5 long balls. All of that while playing half their games in an offensive vortex. It is also good to see Gorkys stealing some bases again. I guess that hamstring is fully healed.

Rome - Off

Burlington 5, Danville 1

  • L.V. Ware 1-4 2B, K
  • C. Shehan 1-3 BB, K

Moving on.

Tigers 2, Braves 5

  • J. Hanson 2-4 K
  • L. Hiller 2-3 HR(2), 2 RBI, K
  • A. Feliz 3-4 2B, RBI
  • B. Oberholtzer 5IP 5H 1R 0BB 6K

I spelled Oberholtzer right on the first try. Feliz is a 20 year old Dominican OF that showed some extra base power last year in the Dominican and so far has been hitting well for the GCL Braves. I can't figure out who this Hanson guy is. Baseball America says we drafter a guy named Jason Hanson, 3B in the 14th Rd. and then MinorLeagueBaseball.com has this guy listed as Jake Hanson, 3B but I can't really find anything about him. I don't think they are the same people, just a weird coincidence of some sort.

Thorman and Moss

You know, you forget because he strikes out so much, but when Thorman hits a homer, they go a long way. I’ve been going to Harbor Park for 15 years and that’s easily one of the longest I’ve ever seen. Still don’t think he should ever play in Atlanta again, but it was fun to watch.

And Damian Moss is just terrible. Truly awful. And he’s like the only Australian ever that’s a jerk. Why they don’t release him is beyond me.

According to milb.com, Jake seems to be a nickname for Jason Hanson

Jon Gilmore

In Danville, Jon Gilmore is up to an even .300 – glad to see him turning things around.

You know...

....I actually had an interesting thought this evening whilst cutting grass. Last year’s Rome team wasn’t that good – they didn’t win a whole lot, and they didn’t seem to have any standout players, either pitchers or hitters. Schafer was great, but was gone pretty quick. Hanson and Heath both got moved up. Flowers was good but not getting much attention for some reason.
But look at them now, only it’s the Myrtle Beach team. Pretty much the same as last year – Flowers, Owings, Britton, Cabrera, Hicks, Jones, Mejia, C. Rodriguez. Gorkys is new and Campbell wasn’t with that group last year. Also, throw in Cofield, Reynoso, Butts, Vines – all last year Rome guys. That team has really matured well together, and they didn’t appear to have THAT much potential. Granted, Gorkys is a huge addition, but still – my point is, the ‘mediocre’ core from Rome last year is really clicking and hitting their collective stride this year in MB, and there are several emerging stars – Flowers, Hicks, Jones, Reynoso, Vines, even Owings. Owings has quietly raised his average to .289 and hit 13 homers. And give bonus points to them all for doing it at the dreaded Coastal Field.

My real point is to look ahead and wonder if all the talent that was supposed to be in Rome this year will take off next year at the beach. Of course Heyward and Freeman are good, and Cody Johnson is really on fire since the all star break, but others have had flashes of brilliance here and there(Locke had a one hitter going into the sixth the other night. Still came out the winner, and looked great the whole way). Add Gilmore to that group full time next year (maybe -assuming he gets back to Rome this season and tears it up….), and all that pitching. I bet some of this year’s draft guys – pitchers – will end up in Rome soon – it could really be a muli-headed beast next year at High-A.

You know I agree 100%. There is definitely something to be said about good players staying together for the long haul and moving up together. I think that is part of what the 90s was all about for the Braves with guys like Chipper, Klesko, Javy, Avery etc all coming up together and knowing each other. (We can obviously never overwrite the importance of Glavine, Smoltz, Maddux though) But I think thats a large part of what is going on with the Rays right now. All that talent has been playing together for the last 3-4 seasons. They know each other and are comfortable. The Yankee Dynasty died when they scrapped the core guys like Girardi and O’Neill and started trying to buy the pennant every year (I know some of those Yankee guys weren’t home grown but they had that level of comfort with each other).

Another funny thing with the Braves is that most of the time their minor teams are some of the youngest in their leagues. The Braves let these guys play and mature with each other and against older competition. This crop of hitters and pitchers might be one of the deepest we have had since the early 90s. I am personally excited about it.

Last year....

.....people thought we gutted the system when we got Teixeira. We gave up some talent, but we still have a good deal on the farm.
