Recent Drafts in Hindsight: 2005

The drafts between 2005-2007, what would you change in the first 5 rounds...

I'll start with 2005 in this post:

Here's what the Braves did:

Joey Devine (1)

Beau Jones (1)

Yunel Escobar(2)

Jeff Lyman (2)

Jordan Schafer (3)

Michael Broadway (4)

Will Startup (5)

Here's my picks:

1st Round: Clay Buchholz- He was drafted one slot after Beau Jones and he already has a MLB no-hitter on his resume.

other notables available: Michael Bowden, Luke Hochevar, Travis Buck, Colby Rasmus

Supp 1st Round: Chase Headley: We would have our 3B of the future already in our system and may have also moved him to LF.

other notables available: Nolan Reimold, Garrett Olson

2nd Round: Yunel Escobar - turned out pretty good so far

2nd Round: Taylor Teagarden - a pretty good Catcher prospect in the Rangers system

3rd Round: I'll stick with Schafer thank you very much.

4th Round: German Duran, 2B - Wasn't taken until the 6th round by the Rangers.

5th Round: Steven Pearce, 1B - Good prospect in Pirates system.

Other notables taken later in draft: Austin Jackson (Yankees CF prospect), Jemile Weeks (recently drafted by Oakland), John Lannan (Nats pitcher), Justin Smoak (recent ly drafted by Rangers), Yonder Alonso (recently drafted by Reds)

Damn good prospect, wish we had him now. I’d have taken Lincecum, whatever year he went.

Scouting is hard

I guess I don’t like going hindsight on drafts because so much as changed. Instead, I’d rather look at if it was a good pick at the time. I think Devine was a good pick, but we never used him and now he’s pretty successful in Oakland.

well...

...actually we did use him.

You’re right, we should have used him to throw BP. Think of the confidence boost!

But he seems to be coming around in Oakland…of course.

imagine having him come in all the games the bullpen blew. oof

"Of Course"

seriously, how many guys have we given up in the last fifteen years that ended up being complete crap with their new team. So far, Devine has been alright for a half season and Adam Wainright has been pretty good. But for the most part we have a great track record of duping other teams.

Oh you are totally right.

I only meant that of course we traded him, thinking our pen is solid then Moylan and Soriano go down, Acosta struggles and we have to use Boyer every game.

But you’re right, we usually end up on the better end of a deal.

what about COLBY RASMUS with that first round pick? he could help us a good deal right now.

Could've picked up Joba in '06

Wonder if last year the Giants would’ve done a Francoeur + Lillibridge for Lincecum?

Pointless Exercise.

You can’t critisize a team for passing on a guy when most of MLB did as well. In MLB, you have issues of signability to contend with and our budgets don’t match those of the teams that ended up snagging those guys. Half of your “notables” are Yankees, Red Sox and Rangers; those are big time money teams. This isn’t Baseball Mogul where you don’t have to sign youngsters to million dollar contracts out of the gate.

could have cleaned up in 06

with first ten picks we could have had SP J. Chamberlain, RP C. Perez, SP C. Tillman, SP B. Anderson, SP J. Masterson, SP B. Wood, 1B C. Davis, SP J. Walden, 1B M. LaPorta, 1B L. Anderson. You could look back at any draft and find they stars we should have taken. too bad frank wren cant travel through time

show you up?

not trying to. But I guess since Wren can’t travel through time I won’t waste everyone’s time bringing up past possibilities…

No apologies needed...

its just, the MLB draft is such a crapshoot. i mean, IF WE JUST DRAFTED ALBERT PUJOLS IN 2000, WE WOULDN’T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS! see what i mean?
