I think it’s a trade. I’m not going to say whether it’s good or not, because Blanton hasn’t pitched a game for Philly yet, and Beane, despite the criticism, will somehow, get the job done, and put together a winner. The bigger picture people aren’t looking at is the fact that the A’s have traded five players (Haren+1, Harden+Gaudin, Blanton) and gotten eleven players in return. Whether or not they pan out to be good, they at least have a wealth of close-to, if not already major-league-ready talent to bolster their farm, or have as trade bait.

Does this bolster the Phillies? No. Who cares if they win the division and make the playoffs? They’ll probably lose to the uber-hot wild card from the Central, since the playoff format will not let the 1 seed play a wild-card in the same division in the first round, and we all know the west isn’t going to have anything better than the 3 seed.
