Braves @ Padres Open Thread: The Maddog Days of Summer

Atlanta @ San Diego

Greg Maddux hasn't won in his last 11 starts, so fate would certainly like to put us in the position to get him out of his slide. With the way our offense wimpered all night long against Jake Peavy yesterday there's a good chance Maddux will break through with a win. Optimism be dammed.

Next Game

Atlanta Braves
@ San Diego Padres

Saturday, Jul 12, 2008, 10:05 PM EDT
Petco Park

Charlie Morton vs Greg Maddux

Partly cloudy. Winds blowing from left to right field at 5-10 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 70.

I love Greg Maddux

But he is hanging pitches like nobody else’s business lately, and those are what are killing him. The term “meatball” has a whole different meaning when watching Maddux pitch lately, because I swear the ball looks bigger when it leaves his fingertips.

I’ll be frank though – as much as I love tThe ‘Ol Professor, I’d rather see a Braves win, even if it as his expense, Pujols bless his soul.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

by royhobbs on Jul 12, 2008 8:10 PM EDT   0 recs

I have not seen him pitch much this year

but it seems to me that its run-support that has been killing him worse than being up in the zone. That’s not to say he isn’t hanging pitches, but he still seems to be able to pitch well enough, he just is on a crappy team. That beat us last night…

You going to be around tonight? My optimism pretty much diminished without you last night.

I'm here

I went to a movie last night, and watched the game on DVR, and vomited afterwards. I don’t feel like doing much tonight other than staying home. Having your own house kinda tends to settle you down, or at least it did for me. . .

I'll be here.

Excited to at least see two of my most favorite players in Maddux & Chipper on the same field again!

I was at the game the last time Maddux pitched at Turner Field. He was given an extremely generous strike zone, and you could tell the young guys like McCann and Francoeur were both star-struck by Maddux, especially by the way McCann got caught looking on backdoor, that only Maddux would get the call on, and Francoeur grounded right back to Maddux. After for whatever reason that Maddux was pulled in the 4th forfeiting the chance for the win, Cla Meredith didn’t get the generous strike zone, and we ended up beating him, and getting Smoltz the win.

Hellboy II. Turn-off-your-mind action flick, but enjoyable, tell you the truth. I didn’t like the first one too much, but I was able relax and enjoy this one.

Ah

Never saw the first, but I didn’t think I’d like it.

This new one looks decent.

I want to see Wall-E. Yeah, yeah. It looks pretty good.

Unhappy last night with the team and with himself after another unChipper-like performance.

So....

any chance we get a run tonight? How about a hit in the first four innings? Perhaps a miracle could happen and we would get a run in the first four innings.

by sddbaker on Jul 12, 2008 9:57 PM EDT   0 recs

I hope so...

...but I’m not going to hold my breath.

We need to make some sacrifices

Tempt fate or something. If the Braves score in the first inning, jug should have to march outside naked, and do ten jumping jacks or something.

SS pre-game

I normally don’t watch it, but I’ve got like four clocks all timed anywhere from 8-15 minutes fast, so I turned the TV on early and saw it.

Surprising, huh?

Something superstitious about the pre-game, that I tend to ignore. Post-game, on the other hand, I’m usually all ears and eyes.

SS viewers

Are you seeing this “coach and student” commercial?

You can do better.

I say that after every inning of Braves baseball. I could only wish the results turned out as positively as the end of this 60-second spot does.

by royhobbs on Jul 12, 2008 10:13 PM EDT   0 recs

Yes...

...kind of reminds me of an after-school special or something.

I just mutter something about brasato and pomadora sauce after every inning. Luckily, I haven’t seen a Navigator commercial lately.

I just don’t buy what Chipper says about not getting any good pitches to hit lately. I’m so damn tired of them tipping their cap to the opposing pitcher. “You know, this guy’s been at AAA all year, but he sure didn’t look like it tonight”

by 10-4 on Jul 12, 2008 10:22 PM EDT   0 recs

I agree.

When Chipper opens his hips too early and doesn’t stay back on the ball, it has nothing to do with getting a pitch to hit.

Joe Simpson for hitting coach!

My wife and i laughed out loud when Braves Live showed the segment TP’s Tips on hitting. Follow these tips kids and you can go into a deep offensive slumber like the Braves!

by sddbaker on Jul 12, 2008 10:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

exactly...

its a cop-out. I mean, you should tip your hat every night. But if you suck it up, tip your hat and just say you sucked.
