Jason Heyward Catapults up the Prospect List

Our top prospect jumped up to the top-5 prospects in all the major leagues according to Baseball America. Outfielder Jason Heyward, last year's first-round draft pick (number 14 overall) is having a spectacular season at the low-A Rome Braves club. He is hitting .331 with 8 homeruns and 14 stolen bases in his first full-season in pro baseball.

On the mid-season top-25 prospect list, Heyward is ranked fifth overall behind Clayton Kershaw (Dodgers), David Price (Rays), Matt Wieters (Orioles), and Colby Rasmus (Cardinals). Heyward's ranking represents a significant jump in his prospect status in just half a season. He was ranked 28th on Baseball America's preseason list, and only 8 prospects in front of him have graduated to the majors and lost their prospect status. That represents a raw jump of 15 spots on the prospect list for Heyward.

Mississippi outfielder Jordan Schafer was ranked 25th on the preseason list, but was not present in the top-25 of the midseason list. Pitcher Jair Jurrjens was ranked 29th, but has since lost his prospect status (of course, he did just win the Rookie of the Month award for the month of June). Brandon Jones was ranked 70th on the top-100 preseason list, and Gorkys Hernandez was ranked 92nd.

The article also alludes to three other Braves prospects who are strong contenders for the top-100 should they continue their current rate of success; pitchers Tommy Hanson and Julio Teheran and first baseman Freddie Freeman.

That is awesome! I was just asking about the article on another thread. I think that the kid is going to be something special and should probably progress awfully quick

you know I bought the online subscription service for BA today just so i could see this list (and also because i got my first paycheck for my promotion today and was feeling giddy). It looks like our depth of Pitchers and Hitters between Rome and Myrtle Beach is pretty special

Locke
Rodgers
Evarts (hurt yes)
Freeman
Heyward
Hernandez
Hicks
Jones
Flowers
Diamond

Just off the top of my head all those guys could fit in our top 15 or so

And

Maybe even Ortegano, Osuna, Pruneda, Tommy Palica, Cody Johnson

I really want Eric Barrett on that list, but he’s got some control issues….strikes out 5 a game but walks 8 it seems. Hits a lot of dudes, too.

Bottom line is, you’re right. Those 2 levels of class A look pretty stacked.

Uh....

Richard Sullivan is pitching for Rome tonight. He came from Danville, evidently. Who is he?

Also Matt Timms

is now on the Rome roster from Danville.

This is when things get interesting and people start getting shuffled around the minor league system….

Sullivan

He’s the pitcher we drafted from SCAD in the 11th round. By many accounts he might be one of the real steals of the draft, we’ll have to see how he handles the promotion, but that’s exciting. Matt Timms is one of our young Australians—again, he’s supposed to have really good stuff.

Good call earlier on Benino Pruneda. For some reason I really like this guy…. might have something to do with the fact that he can throw 100.

100 is overrated. I threw 100 once. took them weeks to sew my arm back on. I have a friend at SCAD right now and I had no clue that they had sports. I mean they are an art school right?

I think we’ll see some other promotions here soon too. Maybe Casey Hodges, Gerrardo Rodriguez and Jon Gilmore get the bump soon. All of them don’t seem too intimidated by Danville currently.

SCAD

Drove by their equestrian center on my way from (Atlanta to) Savannah to Hilton Head a couple of weeks ago..who’d a thunk?!! It was gorgeous, though.
