Phillies @ Braves: Open Thread and a Can of Corn
Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves, Jun 7, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
Wow! That was a stinger last night. Little things, man, little things. In addition, do we need a new right-fielder? Preferably one who can get at least one hit out of five with runner on base.

- Oh, Bobby. -
Although...
I would have opted for Anderson in CF and Blanco in LF. Am I out of line in thinking so?

Blanco's defense
just hasn’t given me too much confidence thus far. I don’t think he lacks talent, just experience. Anderson doesn’t have much more, but so far hasn’t given me any reason not to trust him.

toasts with...
...Mt. Dew? Sorry not to much of a beer drinker, though I may have to make a bloody marry or two..or go with Black Velvet on the rocks..
If it gets bad quick...
I’m confident it won’t, but bourbon will be deemed necessary.

First I'd get some dogs..
...to take a huge dump on it, then light it on fire maybe at say…Jimmy Rollins’ doorstep?
Is peachtree net under security restrictions?
No braves broadcast on Extra Innings for some reason, although we can enjoy an exciting WNBA matchup between Houston and Indiana!
Women's Pro basketball
It’s actually sorta interesting – a surprising number of the players are wearing lipstick!
hmmm
never heard of it. Do men play professional basketball? I thought it was only a college sport.
by jug on Jun 7, 2008 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions
oh, interesting.
I might have to look into this professional basketball thing. I love me some college bball.

And a very professionally executed
pick & roll bu the gals in red – i’m still a little unclear which team is which
Indiana Fever taking charge in this titanic WNBA matchup
on 3 successive threes. Hey, this liveblogging thing is entertaining…to me at least. I’m not totally in favor of Indiana Fever as a nickname, however – has a certain std aura, no?
Yeah, I had Indiana Fever once...
had to take antibiotics for 3 weeks to get rid of it. I’ll not get a massage from that place again!

No MLB EI
See, last night I said I’d stay away. I’m too weak but have no choice…dammit. I guess I’ll watch the Fish lose (hopefully).
Just went through the channels again
and still can’t find the braves on EI. Meanwhile, it’s 26-20 for the fever blisters after 1 in our WNBA matchup. Crowd is definitley larger than the last few hawks games i attended….
why wouldn't it be?
bet you don’t pay enough for EI. That must be it…
by jug on Jun 7, 2008 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions
what I mean is
its ridiculous. it costs big money just to be able to watch your team play. And now, you’ve paid but can’t see them!
by jug on Jun 7, 2008 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions
It was worse b4 hockey and nba were over
they allocate a certain number of channels for all the pkgs, and some nights they just would arbitrarily drop the braves. Surprisingly, no refund offerred!
's ok
i’m hooked on the wnba matchup now. Nickname update – it’s the houston comets, and their coach looks like kevin loughery’s first wife.
awesome, productive at bat from francoeur. he’s doing so fucking bad i’m not even gonna call him frenchy anymore. what a disgrace.
this is terrible so far
So many wasted chances.
How about this idea: Bench Francoeur, let Anderson bat leadoff? Couldn’t be much worse than Escobar or Johnson, who I like as hitters but they aren’t leadoff guys.
I think
Jeff needs another day off or so. When Kotsay is healthy, there is a real argument against him being in the lineup. However, nobody has as strong as an arm as Jeff, so putting Anderson or Blanco in RF is a defensive liability.
by jug on Jun 7, 2008 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions
i used to think that, but 9 LOB is looking like a bigger offensive liability.

WNBA update
It’s the fever by 14 at the half. Cute variation on the sideline reprter thing – they have these hunky himbos doing the interviews with the coaches. Player on the Houston bench looks suspiciously like tyron lue.
do the coaches
pull a Bruce Pearl and wrap around Erin Andrews?
by jug on Jun 7, 2008 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions
is it just me or..
have teams been pitching around chip and tex, and getting away with it b/c frenchy and the guys before them (Kelly & and Escy) aren’t doing anyting?
on a brighter note
this paula deen buffet sounds pretty good
Back from the walk
For those of us with no access…spell it out. What’s going on? Did we score? What is the score?
Nice for a cartoon chickie
But…y’all got me thinking Erin Andrews right now. I’m getting all tingly where my bathing suit covers…
:-)
Still no score...bottom of 4
Jo Jo plunked Utley (smile), Chipper stole another base after walking…Tex and McCann haven’t done anything yet
frenchy
still wants to pull the low and away pitches
by son.of.sourman on Jun 7, 2008 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions
honestly
we should be up. bad baserunning and some other sloppiness lost us a couple of runs in first couple of innings.
by son.of.sourman on Jun 7, 2008 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions
hard to win
when you only have 1 hit in the game.
by jug on Jun 7, 2008 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions
this is killing me
i’ve watched this philly line up just kill really good starting pitching. and then huddy and jo jo, boyer and others come in here and just really grind out some quality innings but get let down by just bad offense and sloppy defense. this is really brutal to watch
lol
Skip would want to come to the plate with Ella Fitzgerald or Celon Dion singing “Mr. Wonderful.”
If you don't have a man-crush on Chipper
then you aren’t a man.

i'm shocked and relieved
but here’s a question: who is more of an albatross to their right right now, frenchy or ryan howard?
by son.of.sourman on Jun 7, 2008 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions
How many
RBIs does Howard have and does FYF? Compare LOB for each.
My guess is FYF. I know Howard has more RBIs.
by jug on Jun 7, 2008 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions
weiner had a point
when he said expectations. it’s not like FYF bats cleanup.
by son.of.sourman on Jun 7, 2008 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions
you're right
but the term “albatross” implies some frustration with what is expected. I’m just sayin’...
jojo has thrown 83, and in 4 of the last 5, he’s thrown over 90…and he’s looked pretty good tonight, so i say keep him in, but have him on a short leash
maybe bobby wants to give the bullpen some rest

for several weeks…possible in Richmond

All good points
but I was thinking you put in Nortony or somebody to try to drive in a run, regardless of his pitching. But, I don’t know…
by jug on Jun 7, 2008 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions
in hindsight
yeah with the bases loaded in a tie game, makes sense. even in just regular sight acutally
by son.of.sourman on Jun 7, 2008 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions
into the bourbon, then?
Or was that bigjoe (aka Chief) that threatened the bourbon? I always get you two guys confused.
i think the thing is…he got his feet wet last year, knew what to expect this year, fine tuned himself in the spring and april, and now is here ready to be a contributor. and so far, he’s doing exactly what we need him to do: pitch effectively, and eat innings. campillo & glavine only have half of that equation down.
i like yunel as a player
i tried like hell to trade for him in my roto league, but i just get the feeling that as a person, he’s a bit of a douche.
how the fuck is romero doing this with a near even K:BB ratio, less than 1 K/IP, and an average at .250?
Interesting
factoid.
might be out of gas? walked the Flying phucking hawaiian.

I got to say
it was a gamble, but not necessarily a bad one. I mean, Jo-Jo was cruising and you figure he deserves a chance to get out of the inning. He walks Victorino, but thats no reason to think he cant’ get a Vidro from Utley.
by jug on Jun 7, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions
This just in
Reds pitching coach Dick Pole just came out to the mound. Marlins have bases loaded.
Aw who cares. I’m just glad my name isn’t dick pole.
either name
Dick Pole or Cox would make a great porno moniker. Anybody remember George Costanza and “Buck Naked”? Hilarious.
Spammers?
We’re getting Marlins and WNBA updates. That’s quality info.
think maybe
he was talking about the last 3 fanposts.

Hey Jug
How are things. Just watching this Braves game. Jug what are we gonna do about all these spammers. I dont know about you but they’re are kind of annoying.

Watching the game and drinking some whiskey. Spammers? I designate you to go get ‘em. Lay into them. Make ‘em pay!

Very well
I think these so called “spammers” are really disguise Phillies fans…Losers!! The best thing to come out of Philly was Rocky, and he had a slurred speech. Kinda like me, after half a shot of Tequila.
Is that the religion
that allows multiple wives?
hey-oh!

OK lets get some runs back.
Of course, that means a HR, because I don’t think we can score any other way. Why can’t we seem to manufacture runs?
well shit
FYF is 2-4. Why couldn’t he get just one of those singles when there were BASES EFFING LOADED YESTERDAY!@
he changes his approach with runners on base...
he starts sucking.
Seriously, he starts trying to pull everything on the fence with runners on.
Me too
Everything is an office quote these days, but nobody I work with watches it. I still laugh very much at myself sometimes!
You guys see about Soriano?
If you haven’t seen the article yet at atlantabraves.com, evidently Soriano is a bit more of a drama queen than he even seemed to be before – Bobby had him warming up to come into the game last night, and Soriano said, “no”. That’s the watered down version. Bobby is not happy with Raffy.
Yeah...I think so...
...but still. Something isn’t sitting well with Bobby, so it can’t be all good.
I think
there is something in the water.
there is whiskey in my water, but really. it seems more than a coincidence that pitchers break down in Hotlanta.

well we went something like 15 years without any real major injuries save for Galarraga’s cancer. Maybe we a re due
If we are a martyr
do we get 100 hooters waitresses in heaven?
wow, that is just awful. I amaze myself sometimes.
So, does anybody remember how our bullpen
was leading the NL in ERA?
I don’t. I have no confidence in our pen anymore.
Mother Fuckers!
Is it to much to ask to get a win on my fucking birthday? Fuck this!
Dont worry...
just got off work and I am WELL on my way!!
You know the Pelicans were down 8-1 and they just tied it up. We need to take a page from their book
i remember
when Brad Lidge was good. Than he gave up that homer to Pujols. Now he wears a golden thong ffor good luck.
I come in peace
Wienerdog. and yes it was my bedtime 2 hours ago, but i snuck out of my house. I might get my braves slippers taken away from me if i get caught.
What pleasure do you get
out of coming in here and getting on our nerves?
If
i was a bad guy, i would flag that as an innapropiate comment. but i wont. I’ll keep you in my prayers
If you mean Chipper
he doesnt need any prayers. He’s unconcious at the plate right now. Ted Williams status. at least the way he’s hitting this year.
Yeah apparently not
But they PTV mikes caught EVERY word, haha.
If nothing else, you got to love how Bobby defends his players.
they said...
the ump was showing extra flair with his out call—that’s what BC didn’t like…guess we’ll find out…not that it matters much
I'm depleted.
another loss. 5.5 GB. really? I thought we were picked to win the WS? When are we going to play like it? I’m tired of being patient. I want to blow people out of the water by like 14 runs. oh well, tomorrow is another day. here’s to avoiding the sweep.
go braves. all hail the Almighty Chipper.
We really need
one of those blowout games….I can’t remember the last one.
Good night, and Larry bless.
Well
I am going to watch *61 and pretend Barry Bonds doesn’t exist and that the Braves won tonight. Its okay to be delusional, right?
nevermind
I’ve never watched this before. Its terrible. I think I’m just going to drink. Maybe in the dark.
in the dark?
i should try that. here goes…
Sadly, it’s only beer. But it’s Sierra Nevada Summer Ale. Mighty fine, even in the light.
I highly recommend being delusional...
it’s been the only thing that’s helped me since I gave up drinking.
maybe
we could have an alternate hottie pic when we lose? Something to look forward to on these hot summer nights…Erin Andrews with a whip?
Maybe enough Sierra for me…
Sigh, me too.
When I left the game, it was tied. Heartbreaking to hear the score when I got in the car at the train station.
I know, I know
but I was doing the “Jerseys Off Our Backs” for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and have been on my feet since 2. I actually had to walk to the stadium from the GA State MARTA station (at least a mile?), as well as walk around the Ted from 2-9 selling raffle tickets, all in 95 degree weather.
I know, there’s no crying in baseball! (waaaahh).
;)
In that case...
you are forgiven. And there is A LOT of crying in baseball around here, or there has been this week, anyway.
nevermind.
You were doing Larry’s work! Sorry to spout off without knowing the situation! Please forgive me.
Just to clarify "Our Larry" reference...
I posted this pic I took at the game last night before I read the entire thread. So when I put “Our Larry”, I certainly didn’t mean it in the “Our Pujols” vein of thought – referring the earlier brief discussion of possibly changing the use of Pujols to Larry. Chipper’s not on my short list of favorite players, but I will give him his due for the superior athleticism he’s been displaying lately (stealing bases? omg…knock me down and make me shut up).
I only meant it as he’s ‘our’ boy and doing well – and I thought Weiner Dog and sddbaker would like the pic (despite the inferior quality). Chipper is no Pujols.
I’m with royhobbs, “Pujols it is”.
Hey all.
I got to thinking…
Maybe it isn’t a good idea to replace Pujols with Larry. I mean, I’m not all the superstitious except when it comes to baseball. And Chipper has gone this far without us praying to him, maybe we shouldn’t start. In fact, we should all take back our blasphemy against Pujols, and hope he doesn’t smite us for worshiping a false idol.
Am I out of line or does this make sense?
Whoa
What in the name of … I don’t even know who to use anymore!
I’ll stick with my own guns – Pujols it was before TC, Pujols it is for me, always.
These losses sting. Even more so, now that FOX was pleasuring themselves to death by being able to throw out the stat of “Cubs have best home record in NL” instead of the Braves during the inferior game of the week.
I hate to say it, and bring up a sense of urgency, but we have to win tomorrow’s game, like nobody else’s business. Because a team that can’t win on the road like ours, going to the “new” best home team in the league in the Cubs, it’s going to be a miserable week, if things don’t roll our way. And getting swept by the Phillies at home is unbearable. Makes sweeping the Mets pretty much pointless, to me.
Crazy, Crazier, Craziest:
Next Thursday, I’m going on another mini-trip.
Crazy: It’s to Las Vegas … again.
Crazier: The Braves will be in Anaheim at that time, which is only four hours away from Las Vegas.
Craziest: I’m seriously giving it some thought.
Losses don’t suck as bad if you don’t watch them, so I’m actually quite level-headed right now, even at 1:14 a.m. I’m not as big of a drinker as it may seem, and I haven’t drank anything at all tonight. But man, do I hope for the best tomorrow. I’m guessing it’ll be Oscar2 pitching, perhaps he can pull us out of this rut, and protect this house.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Agreed..
about losses not being as bad when you don’t see them. I was out of the country for most of the miserable June of 2006 and couldn’t even get scores, or I may have jumped off a bridge.
About that game in Anaheim….you HAVE to go and take the magic of TC to a Braves road game.
