2008 First-Year Player Draft Open Thread
While we don't have a "first-round" pick, I think most of us can say that with the state of our starting pitching this year we're all pretty glad that we have Tom Glavine. For those of you who don't know, in order to sign him we had to give up our first round pick (#18) as compensation to the Mets. Even without a pick in the first-round proper, we still have four picks in the first 100 selections -- enough to come away with some very talented early round players. Our early selections include:
#40 - In the supplemental first-round as compensation for losing Ron Mahay to free agency
#64 - Our standard second-round pick
#70 - In the "supplemental" second-round, as compensation for not signing Josh Fields
#96 - Our standard third-round pick
The first rounds will be televised today on ESPN2 from 2pm to 6pm EST.
If you post about the players please do not post content from pay sites (like Baseball America or Scouts, Inc.). You can post snippets and quotes from write-ups, and you can post content that is not behind a subscriber firewall, but not full-copy of exclusive content.

...but here it is again. Glavine has pitched 5 quality starts, including 2 other starts where he went 5 innings and gave up less than 2 ERs…yet we are 3-8 in his starts. So for all the people who are pissed about losing that #1 pick…he’s giving us a chance to win this year. Which is exactly why we signed him.

in addition...
I think that everyone is saying that this class is pretty mediocre…although that doesn’t mean we couldn’t have found someone worthwhile. But yeah, I agree, especially now with Smoltz going down.

Buster Posey
Love the kid, hope he goes #1 to Tampa. He’s a great player, Go Noles!
As for Glavine, I’m ok that we resigned him, but he shouldn’t have been a Type-A free agent. In no way.

Yeah, I was surprised of that myself. It’s a stupid rule to begin with, when you have a guy like Andruw Jones who has consistently produced an OPS in the mid .800s and Gold Glove defense (not to mention .922 and .894 in ‘05 and ‘06), has one bad year (really bad offensively) which at the time no one knew why…and he’s considered a Class B free agent.

I welcome newcomers, don't get me wrong.
You joined the blog yesterday, a day from now on referred to as Black Wednesday, and started spouting off about trading Brian McCann for Trevor Hoffman and Greg Maddux. Or Francoeur and prospect for Maddux (which than you later said we can’t trade him). But the cake was Yunel Escobar for “that Zito guy”. I wouldn’t trade the batboy for Barry Zito! The Giants don’t even want him and they are horrendous. How could he help us? You also suggested Tom Glavine as the closer, which makes as much sense as pissing into the wind. That proves to me one of two things: 1) are here to piss us off or 2) you don’t know your shit and you are pissing us off. I respect opinions, but if you don’t know what you are talking about on here, expect to get blasted. I’ve been actively contributing all season, but if I came on here and said Kelly Johnson is the best 2B since Ryne Sandburg, I’d better have something to back it up because everybody would lay into me for saying that (Just an example, but I do like my boy All Thumbs).
So, chopchop, if you are here to make contributions to the blog then please put some thought into it or except to hear about it. If you are just trolling than we’ll get the Drunken Master gondeee to get rid of you. But, don’t get me wrong, I welcome you to contribute meaningful comments. However, most of your comments are not meaningful and you have now called me out twice. Something which I do not appreciate, sir or madam.
Yeah, I know, I should probably just have ignored his comments, but I can’t help it. I’m a lover but I’m also a fighter, so don’t get any ideas.

Funny you bring up the comparison, because KJ has a career OPS of .806 in 1000+ PAs.
In Sandburg’s first 2 season his OPS was below .700 both years. Of course, the following year he had a .887 OPS and won the NL MVP…
It’s fun to compare =)

By the way
I came on here and said Kelly Johnson is the best 2B since Ryne Sandburg, I’d better have something to back it up because everybody would lay into me for saying that
I respectably refute your opinion on KJ being better than Ryan Sandberg. First of all you not even comparing KJ to the best hitting second basemen of all time. That honor goes to Jeff Kent. Check the #’s. So i too can sit here and say to you to check your facts. Of course that is if you were comparing KJ to the best hitting second baseman of all time.
by chopchop on Jun 5, 2008 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He never said “best hitting”, I was the one who brought up OPS.
Sandburg is light-years ahead of Kent in the “best all around” arguement, considering he stole 344 bases and won 9 Gold Gloves. Kent has stole 94 bases and has no defensive hardware.
by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 5, 2008 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well
If you’re talking OPS, your talking about hitting. Now if you want to bring up defense than you might want to bring up Roberto Alomar in to the conversation, you know, im just saying!
by chopchop on Jun 5, 2008 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Once again…I was the one who brought up OPS, hence I brought up strictly hitting. So, when you go and quote jug’s response of best 2B…you are doing so incorrectly.

Blast from the past from last year's draft
Jason Heyward quickly making his mark, ranks high on BA’s prospect hot sheet.
http://www.talkingchop.com/2008/6/5/546385/heyward-hanson-on-ba-s-pro
by jc25 on Jun 5, 2008 11:22 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Good call, thanks for the link. Since I have a subscription for Baseball Prospectus I rarely go to Baseball America anymore. Heyward was actually #1 on BA’s Hot List from May 30th:
If it felt like something was missing from last week’s Hot Sheet, you may have been thinking of Heyward, who had appeared on the previous three (twice on Hot Sheet, once on Not-Hot) before having a relatively ordinary week. That changed this week as the Rome right fielder unleashed his best week yet. Heyward is having the best season of any of the top hitting prospects in low Class A. He has hits in 18 of his last 20 games, and Thursday’s 0-for-2 (with three walks) night was just his fifth hitless game of the month, whereas he’s racked up 11 multi-games. As great as Heyward was in April (.330/.375/.470), he’s been even better in May (.343/.383/.552), and his .337 average ranks fourth in the SAL. He also leads the league in hits and runs scored. Heyward turned in four multi-hit games this week, and his biggest game of the week came on Tuesday against Hickory, when he went 4-for-5 and finished a triple short of the cycle.
And they came out with a special Hot List on June 3rd where Heyward fell to #5:
Heyward has established himself as probably the top prospect in low Class A this season. While many other top prospects at this level entering the season have had their struggles, Heyward has performed at an elite level from the start. The 14th overall pick from last year has battered Sally League pitching to the tune of a .901 OPS and he hasn’t gone more than two games without a hit at any point all year, including hitting streaks of nine and 11 games in late April and mid May. He ranks fourth in the league in average and third in hits and runs scored, and as good as Heyward was in April (.330/.375/.470), he was even better in May (.345/.398/.564). Another impressive aspect of Heyward’s year is that the lefty swinging outfielder been more deadly against lefthanded pitching (.388/.446/.551 in 49 at-bats) than righthanded pitching (.315/.367/.506 in 168 at-bats). Heyward earned a trip to the SAL All-Star game in Greensboro, and he’s doing all this in spite of being on a struggling Rome club that sits in last place in the SAL’s Southern Division.

#40
Here’s what Kevin Goldstein from Baseball Prospectus has to say about our first over all at #40:
It’s certainly no secret that the Braves scout heavily in their own back yard – having the East Cobb program there certainly helps matters. A big projectable pitcher like Marietta’s Zeke Spruill will likely be in the picture, but the Braves could also be hoping that outfielder Xavier Avery could last ten picks after the first round. He’s a bit of a project, but his tools are frist-round worthy in the eyes of many.
You’ll notice that gopherbroke mentioned this guy already. Nice pull.

Spruill
Thanks for the props. Spruill is a guy who i wouldnt mind at all. He has that typical big righty frame. Couldnt go wrong with either guy if they fall this far.
Avery by the way is a serious burner I have read. 75-80 on the scouts scale depending on who you talk to. Kid can flat out pick ‘em up… and put ‘em down

Well he is supposed to be the next UGA stud RB, so I’d assume he’d be rather speedy. I don’t think UGA would pick up someone like myself to carry the football.

Not all RB’s run a 40 in the 4.2 range. In fact not many do.
by gopherbroke on Jun 5, 2008 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Good point, but a 4.5-4.6 is still in the burner category for baseball. I’m not sure if you even “pick ‘em up . . . and put ‘em down” when you run a 4.2, that’s more like flying.

Probably the best year in awhile to lose 1-18. From everything I’ve seen, talent-wise, this draft is far below par, especially once you get out of the top handful of guys. Looking at the talent available at 18, there’ll be very little in terms of prep pitching that is talented enough to draft that high and really very little in terms of anything but college relievers. I for one am glad that we have Glavine for this season rather than who we’d get at 1-18. 1-40 should bring a solid talent.

Early picks projections
I think they’re really hoping for Spruill, but I don’t think they’ll bite on Avery, at least not with their first selection. They want to get a sure signing with #40 and they got burned last year a bit by Fields, who erased an early pick, and Dixon, who was a two-way athlete in the early rounds who opted for football and injuries.
If they lose out on Spruill, then my feeling is they’ll go after the best high-school pitcher left in the draft. The Braves seem to focus on areas of need and the two areas this year are pitching and catching. I just can’t escape the notion that they’re going to get a catcher out of their first few picks, and this draft is pretty deep with catching talent. We likely won’t get one of the top three - Posey, Skipworth, or Castro - but we may be able to snag a versatile guy like Brett Lawrie (never underestimate the Braves love of Canadian players). We may also wait on a catcher like Adrian Nieto, a Cuban refugee (never underestimate the Braves love of Cuban players). I have a feeling that we’ll come out of the first four picks with at least one catcher, two pitchers, and one “athlete” type prospect.

Baseball Prospectus' draft coverage is cracking me up...
...especially this one from Kevin Goldstein (their big prospect guy) about the Astros passing on Justin Smoak:
10. Astros—Jason Castro, C, Stanford. Are you f-ing kidding me? Words can not describe how dumb this is. They just can’t. I’m utterly speechless. At least I get to rip Houston’s drafts once again. I’m rambling to myslef here it total disbelief.
One minute later:
Ok. Here’s the thing. Castro is a really nice catcher, don’t get me wrong. But that’s a late first round talent and JUSTIN SMOAK IS STILL ON THE BOARD. Maybe the Astros just didn’t notice this.
And four minutes after that:
I’m still totally floored, by what Houston did. I know I shouldn’t be at this point with the Astros
by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 5, 2008 3:57 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Ridiculous
Houston resident here, and what the Astros do in these drafts is absolutely appalling. Taking Castro was such a gut move because their Towles-Ausmus combination is a giant ball of suck. Passing on Smoak because they’ve got Berkman/Lee in the 1B-LF all hit-no field areas is just dumb. Seriously…the Brewers picked up Matt LaPorta even with their fantastic Fielder-Braun combination combining for negative 100 FRAA in the field. Learn something from your division rivals (but not from the Pirates, please)! Ed Wade is a certified moron.
By the way, BP isn’t too thrilled about their second round pick either.

From Crawfish Boxes about Astros 2nd rounder Jordan Lyles
Upper 80s fastball? This draft is ridiculous. Why do we suck so bad at drafts and everything else for that matter? A depressing day in Astroland. I know that’s a bit of an overreaction, but not one person likes either of our picks it seems. We reached for a catcher and a guy who throws an upper 80s fastball and failed to make Baseball American top 200? Seriously? Why Houston, why?!
6’4 and throws in the high 80’s?HS pitcher, so you would hope that either this scouting report is off, or he is expected to develop more velocity as he ages.
Seems like a strange pick for #2. Wasn’t on any "expert’s" list anywhere near this high, if at all. Will be a real test for the Astros’ commitment to signing players. This guy seems like a prime candidate to go back to school, but we’ll see what the Astros offer him.
re: Lylesfrom Zach Levine at the Chron:
4:20 p.m.: With their compensatory selection for the loss of Trever Miller, the Astros pick Jordan Lyles, a high school right-handed pitcher from South Carolina.
Lyles is a tall hard-thrower, who was a prep football star in South Carolina as a wide receiver.
According to the South Carolina newspaper "The State" he’s considering going the college football route.
I say we draft4 pitchers who can throw 100 mph. Anything but another Jason Castro and a 19 year old Jamie Moyer.
Just…wow. Sorry to hijack the thread with Astros talk, but the Braves are actually, you know, good at drafting.

How old is he?

Just getting back from in and out burger
Man, we really racked up the good pitchers in the draft so far. We snag Spruill with our third pick…. nice!

Top 5 picks
Brett DeVall – high school left hander
Tyler Stovall – high school left hander
Zeke Spruill – high school right hander
Craig Kimbrel – He’s not listed in the BA list, apparently he’s an unknown – from Wallace CC in ‘Bama
Brendan Schlehuber – catcher from S. Nevada CC
See… I told you we’d draft a lot of high school arms and a catcher…
