Fish @ Braves: The Swan Song of John Smoltz

Florida Marlins @ Atlanta Braves

It was nice to see that we got a one-run "win" last night, but today there was a pretty big let-down; John Smoltz will have season-ending arm/shoulder surgery.  I think most of us knew this might happen when he first started experiencing arm problems and then continued to have setbacks.

Oh well, not much we can do but moan about it and move on. Feel free to vent a bit in this business-man's special open thread. Perhaps Trader-Wren will find the next best thing on the trade market. Who would have thought that Glavine would last longer than Smoltz this year?

Next Game

Is the game on

SportSouth? All I’ve got is Francoeur’s Spotlight for the 5,351st time.

by jug on Jun 4, 2008 12:40 PM EDT   0 recs

*

I should say, that is on now and the guide says its Under the Lights: Bruce Pearl.

by jug on Jun 4, 2008 12:41 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

the original..

Bruce Almighty …. at least in my neck of the woods.

by sddbaker on Jun 4, 2008 3:27 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

There’s a spotlight about Jeff Francouer? i’d like to see that.

by 10-4 on Jun 4, 2008 12:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Next thing you’re gonna tell me that Dos Equis has sponsored the Most Interesting Man in the World?

by 10-4 on Jun 4, 2008 12:57 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I heard...

... he was a lover and not a fighter….

by gondeee on Jun 4, 2008 1:01 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

no, he’s also a fighter, so don’t get any ideas.

by 10-4 on Jun 4, 2008 1:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

its on peachtree i believe

I’m listening to the pregame on radio, and they had Tim Meadows on there saying he was at the game promoting a show on TBS. I can only hope that he goes on Peachtree and Skip is doing the broadcast, that might be tv for the ages. Mighty ballsy of TBS to promote a show at a Braves game.

by 10-4 on Jun 4, 2008 12:44 PM EDT   0 recs

Yes, PTV

I got it now.

AWRIGHT I GET A DAY GAME WITH JJ!!!!

by bigjoe on Jun 4, 2008 12:49 PM EDT   0 recs

it makes the afternoon more pleasurable, especially if you have a boss that doesn’t care if you listen to the game.

by 10-4 on Jun 4, 2008 12:55 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I have to Alt-Tab like a mad man when we have games during the day.

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 4, 2008 1:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

They need to put

a “boss” button on here for you guys. Like they do for the NCAA basketball coverage.

BRAVES PLAY HERE

by bigjoe on Jun 4, 2008 1:01 PM EDT   0 recs

SHOUT HALLELUJAH

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

by royhobbs on Jun 4, 2008 1:09 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Frank Wren looks like SUCH a tool. I cant believe he’s our GM

by bigjoe on Jun 4, 2008 1:02 PM EDT   0 recs

Anybody want to camp out at the hospital...

...here in the Magic City to see Smoltz after surgery?

(probably should put on here that I’m kidding, in case nobody realized)

by jug on Jun 4, 2008 1:04 PM EDT   0 recs

I figured it out...

.....but on that note. I will make the pilgrimage from Oregon to Cooperstown when that day comes.

by RainDelay on Jun 4, 2008 1:06 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Sigh...

I was alllllllllllllllllll over it. But that’s exactly why he added the disclaimer! ha ha.

by Lizziebeth on Jun 4, 2008 1:09 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

well

if you really want to…I’ll bring some camping chairs and we’ll sit and wait.

by jug on Jun 4, 2008 1:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I almost..

sort of would do it….

by sddbaker on Jun 4, 2008 2:23 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I am hoping

that Smoltz and Maddux and Glavine all retire the same year and get voted in the same year. Because I can’t choose and I’m not sure if I can make 3 trips to NY.

by jug on Jun 4, 2008 1:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

If Smoltz goes another year

Maddus and Glavine better to. I don’t want to have to trek up there three years in row.

by Euruproktos on Jun 4, 2008 1:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Ah turd.

Chipper isn’t playing today, just cuz. That’s bad.

by Perrinbar on Jun 4, 2008 1:09 PM EDT   0 recs

oh for the love of christ

by bigjoe on Jun 4, 2008 1:11 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

oh for the love of christ

he’s in already?!? j/k

by Lizziebeth on Jun 4, 2008 1:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

lol

shouldn’t it be oh for the love of bruce?

by jug on Jun 4, 2008 1:13 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Blah. Infante?

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 4, 2008 1:11 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'll just pretend today was going to be one of his

very few 0fer games. That’ll make it better.

by Perrinbar on Jun 4, 2008 1:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

without...

actually getting the 0fer

by sddbaker on Jun 4, 2008 2:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Well

It’s time to get to work pretending like I’m working.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

WES HELMS IN THE 3 HOLE!!!!

by bigjoe on Jun 4, 2008 1:11 PM EDT   0 recs

Is that any worse than Jorge Cantu, like last night?

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 4, 2008 1:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

FYF

in our 3 hole. I don’t care if it is a lefty pitching, put McCann in there, he’s just better than Francoeur.

by Perrinbar on Jun 4, 2008 1:13 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

FYF

is going to have a big game, I can feel it.

by jug on Jun 4, 2008 1:14 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It's a left handed pitcher you see.

And Bobby is unable to do anything but play the splits.

by Perrinbar on Jun 4, 2008 1:14 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

F'n Norton...

...even he’s admitted he’s comedy when it comes to playing LF. He wasn’t signed to be a starter…he was signed as a bench bat. He has no business starting, ugh….but it seems Bobby has developed a man crush on the Rake.

by RainDelay on Jun 4, 2008 1:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

If it helps.

MLB.com seems to think they are all changeups.

by Perrinbar on Jun 4, 2008 1:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

no

the changeup is 74 MPH.

by jug on Jun 4, 2008 1:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm just saying

what I’m reading. Obviously Glavine hasn’t thrown all changeups.

by Perrinbar on Jun 4, 2008 1:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I was being

a little facetious.

by jug on Jun 4, 2008 1:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Didn't Tommy used to be around 89-91 back in the day?

I mean 80 mph is even slower than what Moyer throws out there.

He’s not getting any calls from the ump either… this could be a long day.

by get swoll yunel on Jun 4, 2008 1:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

haha, good lord..

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 4, 2008 1:20 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Reading Living on the Black...

And Glavine is convinced that the speed of his fastball doesn’t matter as much, as long as he has a change-up that is at least 9mph slower.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

by royhobbs on Jun 4, 2008 1:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

That's a nice theory and all

but throwing faster forces the hitter to react quicker, causing them to make mistakes… there’s a reason power pitches are always sought after and more highly regarded… and why Glav was a more effective pitcher when his fastball was in the high 80’s.

by get swoll yunel on Jun 4, 2008 1:20 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

tommy’s not going 5 today.

by bigjoe on Jun 4, 2008 1:17 PM EDT   0 recs

and he’s not getting calls. he might not get through 4.

by bigjoe on Jun 4, 2008 1:19 PM EDT   0 recs

And

It’s hot and humid as balls today. He might not go 3.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

by royhobbs on Jun 4, 2008 1:20 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Gah.

Fish score.

by Lizziebeth on Jun 4, 2008 1:20 PM EDT   0 recs

Blech.

I have a strong feeling this game isn’t going to end in a W for us. Especially with no Chipper.

by Perrinbar on Jun 4, 2008 1:21 PM EDT   0 recs

well

might be going to class drunk if we keep this crap up.

already depressed with the Smoltz news.

by jug on Jun 4, 2008 1:21 PM EDT   0 recs

Have a little faith

I know the circumstances are bleak, but we’re at home. I heard we’re kinda good here…

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

by royhobbs on Jun 4, 2008 1:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

whew

got out of it.

Never a doubt in my mind.

by jug on Jun 4, 2008 1:23 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

online feeds

someone once posted a link to a website that had a BUNCH of available radio streams with the game on it. Does anyone still have that?

Or does anyone remember the last day game during the week? I can look back at that thread.

by traphicg on Jun 4, 2008 1:23 PM EDT   0 recs

Sorry, stepped out to the printer

It’s freebaseballradio.com

Click on the schedule, then atlanta

by Lizziebeth on Jun 4, 2008 1:27 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

here's the link for the video feeds

Since I’m on my work computer I use the ones that Media Player files so I don’t have to download anything.

by Euruproktos on Jun 4, 2008 2:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

If anyone out there doesn't think we need another starter

they’re in denial.

Glavine consistently going 5 and Campillo going 4 with smoke and mirrors isn’t gonna cut it forever

I love what I’ve seen from Jo Jo the last two starts, but Jeff Bennett’s and Boyer’s arms are going to fall off unless we get some guys consistently going 6-7 innings.

by get swoll yunel on Jun 4, 2008 1:24 PM EDT   0 recs

frenchy

gets an RBI this AB.

GODDAMMIT YUNEL QUIT SWINGING AT THE FUCKING FIRST PITCH

AND GODDAMMIT BOBBY TAKE HIM OUT OF THE LEAD OFF SPOT

FUCK

by get swoll yunel on Jun 4, 2008 1:25 PM EDT   0 recs

But...

..if you look at his B-R stats – in 2008 he’s hitting .400(ish) on the first pitch. Still, it has to drive them insane..take a damned pitch for crying out loud.

by RainDelay on Jun 4, 2008 1:26 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Want to really get your mind blown? Pretty sure Frenchy has an OPS of over .900 on the first pitch.

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 4, 2008 1:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It's all good

“KJ was really the lead off guy and Yunel sacrificed him to second.”

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

by royhobbs on Jun 4, 2008 1:26 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Where the fuck has Terry Pendleton been here?

Does he not feel the need to maybe sit Yunel down and lecture him a bit?

The first pitch swinging shit just has not worked.

by get swoll yunel on Jun 4, 2008 1:27 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Lets hope Glavine pulls his usual...

...routine of locking in for the next 4 innings. We need early runs.

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 4, 2008 1:26 PM EDT   0 recs
