Uh-oh...Smoltz...Press conference 11:30 a.m. EST
|
I'm just going to copy and paste the official release because it's hard to type through tears...I mean something caught in both my eyes... 06/04/2008 9:34 AM ET Smoltz may be facing shoulder surgery Braves expected to discuss veteran's future at news conference By Mark Bowman / MLB.com |
<!-- * --> |
ATLANTA -- John Smoltz has said that he'll be content if he never throws another pitch. Now, just two days after he attempted to alleviate stress on his shoulder with a move to the bullpen, the Braves veteran pitcher finds this to be a more defined possibility.
The Braves have scheduled an 11:30 a.m. ET press conference at Turner Field and at that time, they are expected to discuss Smoltz's future. There has been talk that he will need to undergo season-ending surgery on his right shoulder.
Smoltz was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Monday and then a few hours later, he blew his first save opportunity since 2004. Although he allowed the Marlins two earned runs in that one-inning relief appearance, the 41-year-old hurler still seemed at least somewhat optimistic about his future.
But when he awoke on Tuesday with increased pain in his shoulder, Smoltz and the Braves immediately understood that he simply might not be able to pitch any more, whether as a starter or a reliever, this year.
In the past, Smoltz has said that he'd retire if he ever needed to undergo another major surgery. He softened that stance on Monday afternoon, indicating that there would at least be a possibility that he'd attempt to prolong his career after enduring a long rehab process.
Smoltz pitched through pain in his shoulder during last season's final four months and encountered further discomfort during the last two weeks of Spring Training this year. After making five regular season starts, he decided that he couldn't continue as a starting pitcher.

Update...
Just heard on 790 the Fan that they “broke the news this morning” that he is “done for the season”. They were talking with Heap when I turned it on, but unfortunately I missed the first part of the conversation…now they’re wasting everyone’s time talking about somebody named Hampton.
by Lizziebeth on Jun 4, 2008 10:15 AM EDT 0 recs
They broke nothing.
I love the way they make it sound like that they got the inside scoop with their teasers, but it is all theory. Zone/Fan/whatever, don’t care if I’m right or wrong on the station name, but all they discussed between 7:20-8:00 a.m. was say that they’re “certain” that Smoltz is done for the season, possibly for- possibly for- oh, I just can’t even type it out.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

I wish you didn’t post this – this morning was the most depressing drive into work ever, already as it was. 790 the Zone kept theorizing that not only would there be the potential for surgery, but potential for the R-word.
Frankly, at this point, I just wish the team would put him on like the 60-day DL or something, and let him just rest. At this stage, who cares about 200 saves to go on top of his 200 wins, I’d rather just have a healthy Smoltz contributing in any capacity, especially if it means a late-season jolt for the rest of the team in August.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

I'm sorry...
but I didn’t want to be lonely in my sadness, and mostly I wanted to see if anyone else knew more – like you just did, because you were actually listening to the broadcast (I lose the AM signals in the car as I get closer to work). I’ll try to be more cautious in the future.
I appreciate the your first-hand info, ‘cause they’re still reporting it as a certainty. They’ve definitely lost one listener here.
But since I’ve got your attention, there’s an in-store with Glavine at Macy’s Perimeter tomorrow from 12-1 if you can get away – get that ball signed. I’m sure everyone’s heard about the Javy one, but I haven’t heard this one promoted much.

Never a need for apologies
We’re all worried over the future of Smoltz – I was tempted to write about what I heard this morning, but didn’t want to jinx anything, but it’s clearly on the tip of everyone’s tongue right now. No matter the emotional outcome, I’m pretty sure, we’d all like to know what’s going on in the Smoltz world…
790 was pretty lame with their attempts to draw listeners – the only reason I listen to them, is because Atlanta has seldom better alternatives; the Byrt Show, Steve/Vicki, Cledus T. Judd (seriously), or strange college rock, so AM sports-talk was the choice today. I can’t even remember their names, but the one guy was speaking like he was John Smoltz the way he kept saying that surgury/R-word was the only option, and then when they switched topics to the oh-so-scintillating son of Hulk Hogan, they kept teasing the Smoltz topic like it was 100% certainty, when it was still clearly 100% conjecture. Their basis? The fact that Smoltz wasn’t doing clubhouse interviews yesterday.
As for the Glavine thing, I appreciate the info – I hadn’t heard that one at all, but then again, I was out all last week. If he’s there signing, I’ll gladly make the trip to Perimeter.

Dave O’Brien of the AJC said a Braves official said it was definitely surgery. I hope he retires, i don’t know if i can take watching him attempt a comeback next year and get hurt again.

...
So…4 elbow surgeries, and now a shoulder surgery? I don’t know if it’s even worth it. I agree with royhobbs…if possible they should just put him on the 60-day DL and let him rest. If the pain has subsided at the end…great, he can help us down the stretch. If not? It’s probably just time to call it a career…
by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 4, 2008 10:30 AM EDT 0 recs
Well that sucks
But the dude’s 41 and he’s had multiple surgeries. It’s impressive that he was effective for as long as he was. This was probably always going to be his last season.
While it’s kind of lame that his likely last career appearance was a blown save, at least he was a great pitcher to the end of his career and we don’t have to watch him peter out like Randy Johnson.
by zwillis on Jun 4, 2008 10:47 AM EDT 0 recs
Even if he R-words, at least he can have one distinction that nobody else can say – everything, with one team. And let’s not argue about the whole coming from the Tigers thing, either here…
Maddux, Glavine, Johnson, Dickheadmens, Schilling, Pedro, and all the other 10+ year veterans, who are among the current active greats can’t even say the same thing.
Nothing is more sad than seeing an iconic athlete leave the nest, falter elsewhere, and throw in the towel, before they sign the pitiful 1-day contract to finally pull the plug, just so they can retire without actually being active, with the team that made them who they once were.
So if a blown save was the last hurrah, so be it – he came out to a standing ovation, the fans roaring, and he played the game. At least he was on the winning team that night. Isn’t that worth it?

Smoltz
Well at least we have Glavine. He’s a true Brave. We can get a few more years out of him, maybe three or four. Smoltz will be back next year. We just need Mazzone to come back and help us out. And lets not forget fellow Braves fans, we still got Hampton waiting in the wing. I’m excited to see us go on the next road trip. We are good at home, but skies the limit when we get back on the road. GO BRAVES!!

I almost want him to retire just so I don’t have to see him struggling with all the injuries anymore. But I guess we will see in a few minutes.

Sad Day
Even if Smoltz has the surgery, and can recover, he’ll likely have MAYBE 2 years left, but I’m thinking it’ll be closer to one. I hate the thought of life without Smoltz, and I’d hate to see a great career end like this, almost tragically, but it would likely be best for him to retire. I’m thinking he’ll still have the surgery to help his golf swing though. But at least he got to 3000 K’s.

I think he'll be back
If he can get healthy with surgery, the competitor in him will want to come back. But Smoltz is also pragmatic and won’t return if he cannot physically do it. If this is the end, all I can say is that it’s truly been a priviledge to watch you work your craft. 1st ballot.

So we just have to wait and see how he feels after surgery and rehab. Viva Smoltz 2009.

What has Zito shown over the last 2 years except that the whole league knows what he is going to throw when he throws it and that he is one of the biggest bust of all times. Not to mention Yunel is one of the top up and coming players in the game, not to mention with a little maturity will become the emotional leader of this team for years to come

dont be depressed....
this is still a very good baseball team, it hurts to loose smoltzie, well it does more than hurt, but the most important thing is right now he will still be in the club house and in the duggout and at some points that can be just as good as him saving a game or winning a game. He is a class act and he will find other ways to help this team win without being on the field. Time for some young guns to shine!

Listen guys, i know it may sound a little crazy but desperate times call for desperate measures. We have to Win!! We are The Braves. We dont know losing like these other crappy teams in our division. We need a top tier closer to save games for us. I have another suggestion, Brian McCann to the Padres for Maddux and Hoffman…
by chopchop on Jun 4, 2008 12:32 PM EDT 0 recs
Well, I know I”m feeding a troll here.. but here it goes..
Hoffman is toast as it is, have you looked at his stats? He’s blown several saves this year, when the Padres really needed him to close it out. Hoffman is not the answer…ever…

This is getting annoyin how about we send McCann , Frency, Yunel , and Kelly johnson to the Reds for Bronson Arroyo and Harston Jr. Doesnt that sound like a good trade… do you hear what you are saying, you are saying to trade the nucleus of a good young team away to get guys that dont have anything left in the tank,.... get a clue. ...it’s days like these (and last weeks road trip) that make me use the name I do.
At least we got a one-run victory. Personally I was hoping Smoltz would’ve gotten the win on Monday night after blowing the save. I thought the team had it all worked out.

Here’s Will Carrol from Baseball Prospectus’ take on Smoltz:
What we know about Smoltz is that he’s come back before. All the information we have builds off of that. We saw him, in diminished physical capacity, throwing-or rather slinging-the ball at 95 and snapping off a slider. Yes, he was hurt, but that’s nevertheless impressive. There will be kids drafted today and handed big checks who can’t do healthy what Smoltz did broken. What it comes down to now is whether the damage in his rotator cuff is significant enough to cost him the 12-18 months that it can. In that case, while he could still come back, the tipping point for a willingness to try might be reached, and perhaps Smoltz is more likely to focus on golf and the ministry. It’s important to note that while his career may be ending with an injury, most of his career wouldn’t have happened without modern sports medicine. Smoltz might end up the first pitcher in the Hall of Fame after Tommy John surgery, but it’s hardly the only thing that doctors have allowed him to do on a baseball field. He’s a pioneer. Smoltz is scheduled for surgery early next week and once he’s open, we’ll know a lot more.
