Braves Interested In Randy Winn?

According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Braves are one team with "apparent interest" in Giants right fielder Randy Winn.  Winn can play all three outfield positions.  Lately the Braves have been using Brandon Jones in left, Gregor Blanco in center, and Jeff Francoeur in right.  Matt Diaz will be out several more weeks with a knee injury, while Mark Kotsay has a lower back issue.

Winn, 34, is hitting a respectable .298/.359/.447 in 288 plate appearances.  Winn's line would look better in center field, but Blanco has a tidy .375 OBP going.  Winn makes $8MM this year and $8.25MM in '09.  He can block trades to ten teams.  I imagine Brian Sabean would settle for a marginal prospect if a team would take on all of Winn's contract.

This quote is from MLBTR, but I thought people might be interested.  Personally, I don't think this trade really makes a whole hell of a lot of sense.  Let me know if I'm missing something.

yeah doesn’t sound very good to me. Haven’t we been linked to Winn before? Or and I just conjuring up stuff from the great beyond

Marginal prospect

They’ll require more than that if FW wants the Giants to eat part of that salary like Oakland did with Kotsay.

Yeah, I’m not sure what is the upside for the Braves here. I gather that Winn is a decent player, but do we need another guy in his mid-30s+?

And don’t we have several OFs who appear capably of holding down left field for the time being. I think we can hold out until we get someone back from injury. And besides it isn’t LF I’m worried about offensively, its RF and 1B

Yes

This would be an awful trade for us, IMO.

Go on, ask if anything surprises me.

Opposed to this deal. Why do we want an expensive, aging marginal talent, when we’ve got a younger, slightly-more marginal, cheaper right-fielder already?

But at least Winn switch-hits, and strikes out less. But I still wouldn’t want him.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

I really don’t see the advantage of replacing Blanco with Winn. Hopefully this is another one of those unfounded rumors that will never come true.

Greetings

Hey guys, I’ve never posted on here before, but I’ve been reading your posts for a while now and really enjoy the commentary. I read the MLBTR article earlier and was utterly dumbfounded and thought I’d chime in.- Don’t see why we need another outfielder when we clearly have bigger fish to fry (i.e. innings eater/ future 1B)

Retarded

If we make this trade, I am gonna boo Frank Wren at the games

We already have a solid leftfielder...

He is just disguised as a second baseman… Kelly Johnson should be moved back to the outfield. He is a good player and an improving hitter but he is not a championship caliber second baseman. His defensive limitations are obvious on a fairly regular basis.

What this team needs is a gold glove caliber second sacker who is a burner who can handle the bat. Hit him leadoff, drop Yunel to the two hole and Kelly goes to sixth until Frenchy can figure things out. The game is changing and it will swing back to pitching, defense, speed and situational hitting once the PED age ends. Gregor “Greg White” Blanco has shown flashes of potential. Randy Winn will do nothing but get older and cost us 8 mil. per year.

Instead of trolling for more outfielders we need to jump into the Rich Harden sweepstakes in a big way and send them whatever it takes. WE HAVE to get back to the days of 3 DOMINANT starting pitchers and while we are at it…GET LEO BACK !!!
