Braves @ Angels: Here Comes Charlie
Atlanta Braves at Los Angeles Angels, Jun 14, 2008 9:05 PM EDT
It's Charlie Morton time... let's see if he has what it takes.
As for my road trip, I've made it to Cooperstown after a day of flying and driving. We stopped off in Maine and got some great fresh Lobstah on the coast. By the way, on the way out of the Boston Airport going North, there are about 15 Dunkin Donuts in the first 14 miles -- no kidding. Including at least tow instances where there were Dunkers right across the street from each other.
Go get 'em Charlie

I'm here...
I’m been excited for Charlie Morton to make it to the bigs since he made so much noise out in Arizona.
Unfortunately...
I don’t have any watch to actually watch the game, but I’ll be following along on MLB gameday.
We need a spark...
From somewhere, hopefully Charlie can provide one and prove that he belongs with the big club
For those of you that can see the game...
Let me know how Charlie looks. All I can see are the numbers..
He's gotta be a little nervous.
Maybe once he gets the nerves out a little he’ll get it down. I’m interested to see what he does against Vlad
Looks like...
he has gas…cut gas…change up…and yacker…all working so far. Nerves probably caused him to take each batter deep into the count.
And it came back to bite us….. we would have been out of that inning if he makes the tag

Was the outfield slow to get that back in?
I mean, Mike Napoli scored all the way from first…
Ahhh okay..
That makes sense then. Napoli is really slow that’s why I asked
He has to be so nervous
He started out well, but he’s pitching to a first place team in his debut
I would love to have Figgins on our team. From Georgia, and grew up a Braves fan, plus he is a heck of a ball player.

what is his contract situation?
Anybody know? I don’t know that we would sign him, but he is a good player.
Go on, ask if anything surprises me.
They just showed the replay....
and it looked like B. Jones was playing deep shortstop almost…...I am still puzzled as to why they were playing in that much with two outs, and runners on 1st and 2nd.
Izturis isn't normally much of a hitter....
That’s the only reason I could imagine
That why the inning we left a runner on 3rd with only one out stings so much. You will not get many chances against Santana, and we did not capitalize on that one like we needed to.

French seems like he thinks...
If he seems more than 2 pitches per AB he’s going to catch on fire or something
Yeah, he knows if he plays well, the job is his for good. They wanted to give him to him in Spring Training but he played so poorly, he cost himself.

Braves Baserunners.....
need to pay attention. No one was covering home. Norton should have just kept on trucking around third.
Yeah, they just said that he is 2-17 now with the bases loaded.

If Morton makes it through this inning...
With the score the same, do you all feel like he’s earned another start? I say yes.
I know no one WANTS to go back to Richmond
But he’s doing a much more convincing job this time around.
Been watching since the 3rd inning...
...but didnt want to sign on for fear of jynx. Morton looked terrific out there, besides the sleazy moustache.

yeah…i was blown away by his composure during that AB to Kendrick.

That looked....
like the Manny for earlier this year. The one who before forgetting how to pitch, had a 1.33 ERA with a low batting avg against.
When he is pitching with confidence (which he has not had for a few weeks now) he can be a great setup man. He has good stuff, just still a little young, and has lapses, which have been costing the Braves big time lately
Time to let him steal 2nd. Get in scoring position with 2 outs.

Wow...
...ball 3 to chipper was really close.

Yeah, but Spier has been all over the place the last few batters. Ump will usually not give the pitcher the call when he is that erratic.

oh, i agree, I just think it is funny that Spier is fussing so much about it. He should know as we do, that he will not get the call when he is all over the place. Sciosia knows, that is why he did not say a word.

completely agree…and as rhyno said, he’s facing a guy who has an OBP of around .495 this season

kind of like Frank Thomas back in the day. They said his eye was so good, that if he took a close pitch, the umps would call it ball, b/c they knew if he thought it was a ball, then it must have really been one

Every time I thihk...
McCann is trying too hard to launch one out…he does what he did on the ‘emergency swing’ earlier in the game…and gets a hit. But I still think he has ‘long ball’ on his mind
yeah…pretty sure i remember hearing FYF say his favorite hitter was vlad

Yeah, that’s kinda why I was asking…’cause when I read your stats/backup, I reconsider my negativism…
haha, i know, but he’s been terrific this season. infante has been the throw-in of that trade…great move by wren

Joe Simpson....

Damn...
...very nice. Good stuff for Morton tonight.

Charlie Morton
is a fantastic interview.
OK he’s the worst interview. But I like his two-seam fastball.
I heart Brando and Chuck 'M.
FYF, you you got to do something to re-earn my love. Striking out with bases loaded is getting OLD. I kind of wanted him to lay down a bunt, just so the bat actually made contact with the ball.
Brandon Jones, very nice. Chuck’M looked good too. I’m excited for these guys. And Acosta didn’t fuck things up.
2 in a row against a very good ballclub. I also thought there was a bit more pep in our step tonight. Honestly, it looked like the guys were a bit more refreshed, showed a bit of urgency and seemed to be seeing the ball well. Just me, or did anyone else think that? I hope this is true and it keeps going. If we can tear off about 8 or 9 of the next 10 we are right back in the mix.
Until tomorrow!
Go on, ask if anything surprises me.
And we picked up one on the Phils
Man, it had been so long since I’d seen J.Kotsay gray, I forget what it looked like!
