Braves @ Cubbies: At least we've won a World Series in the last 100 years

Atlanta Braves at Chicago Cubs, Jun 10, 2008 8:05 PM EDT

Nothing I love more than making fun of Cubs fans (except maybe making fun of Mets fans, but after last year that's just too easy). Cubs fans seem to have a rubbery resilience that is impervious to logic. Perhaps because it's so cold up there the brain's ability to surrender is impaired. On some level you have to admire their sticktoitiveness in the face of such crazy and repetitively devastating circumstances.

The Cubs have been playing averageish baseball lately, so if we can pull ourselves out of this collective team funk we're in, then perhaps we can pick up a few wins in the Windy City.

I just want to see this:

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Come to my office any given day…may not be a glove being thrown, but something’s usually flying.

Ha ha, I love it – and would love to see it this road trip, too.

I took the final two games of the Philly series off after that abortion of a game on Friday (although I did turn it on once to see FYF DIDP with the bases loaded and 1 out. I turned it back off right away). It honestly was the most upset I’ve been about a loss in years.

I think I’m ready to watch again tonight. Lilly has been extremely average this season, but has not walked many and is striking people out at close to a K per inning.

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

DIDP?

Die Into Double-Play?

or a typo?

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

acronym overload…

...yes, it’s a typo but it doesn’t feel like it’s too far off from what FYF did that at bat.

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I have to watch on WGN.

...I haven’t watched a game on there since Harry Carey was there.

by sddbaker on Jun 10, 2008 5:47 PM EDT reply actions

you just saved my night. i couldn’t find it on extra innings, and didn’t even think to look on wgn…it has been a long time

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

You know...

I’m sure that’s fine with many people here, but this little shit has ruined it for me. You could’ve made a separate fanpost for your 20-second squeeze-off and left this to the baseball and general camraderie that most of us came here for.

Dude, grow the FUCK up.

I’ll miss the rest of you…

by Lizziebeth on Jun 10, 2008 5:53 PM EDT reply actions

nooooooooo

Don’t leave Lizziebeth! We value your in-game contributions!

Damnit chopchop, you’ve crossed the line.

Hey

I deleted that pic and I banned him. I think he was a guy who signed up as another user who I earlier banned, then he came back here to… well, I have no idea whey those kind of people say and do the things they do. Whatev’

Hey, if these kinds of people start hanging around more often saying radically moronic things and inciting people, please send me an email (bottom of main page) and I’ll get rid of them quicker.

by gondeee on Jun 10, 2008 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

thanks gondeee

...for taking the time out from drinking Jagerbombs with strippers to do your TC duties. Much appreciated!

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm here for you!

I resemble all these remarks about my drinking…

Anyway, this yahoo, chopchop, has also been three other users which I have banned, chopped, larrysucks, and BravesSuc. I’ll try to keep an eye out for anymore usernames which he creates and we’ll try to get him from showing us how moronic he is again. Keep in mind with guys like this, it’s best not to buy into their stupidity. Again, if you can just ignore them or send me an email and let me know they’re buggin.

by bigjoe on Jun 10, 2008 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

So a couple things stand out...

No Chipper. Francoeur batting third. Norton in LF. Anderson is MIA. Yunel batting lead-off, yet again. Holy Cow.

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah man…i’m at a loss for words

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

no chipper, huh…

absolutely no reason heap should be hitting 6th anymore

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, and in case everybody has been living in...

...a house made from vodka boxes (like gondeee), the Cubs home record is 26-8. Our road record is 7-21.

Lilly had given up 10 ERs on 22 hits in his previous 3 outings of 14.1 innings…But his last outing he lasted 7.1 innings, 2 ER and 8K (that’s right), 2 BB.

The Associated Press
Published on: 06/10/08

Birmingham, Ala. — John Smoltz had surgery Tuesday to repair the labrum in his right shoulder and his hopes for a comeback in 2009 remain uncertain.

Dr. James Andrews and an associate performed the arthroscopic procedure. Smoltz said last week he expected to get a definitive word on his comeback hopes from the operation, but no such announcement followed the procedure.

“The prognosis on John’s shoulder is unclear based on the findings of today’s surgery,” said Braves general manager Frank Wren. “We will know more as John starts to progress through his rehab.”

Smoltz, 41, was on the disabled list twice with shoulder problems before ending his season to have the surgery.

“They repaired a lot of damage,” said Braves manager Bobby Cox before Tuesday night’s game in Chicago.

When asked about Smoltz’s future as a pitcher, Cox said “We’ll see. He’ll start his rehab tomorrow.”

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

he’s starting rehab TOMORROW?! jesus CHRIST is he a gamer or what?

by bigjoe on Jun 10, 2008 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Too funny.

Ok, so you’ve probably heard me talk about my PTV feed, right? I don’t actually get the channel, just the feed during games. So no commercials. Well, right now it just has the camera guys “warming-up” I suppose. I just watched him follow a squirrel hopping around on the field for about a minute. Now, the guy is just panning the crowd and zooming in on hot chicks.

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 7:55 PM EDT reply actions

haha, that reminds me of some of the wierd shit i saw on MLB.tv last year

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

thats awesome. you know it happens all the time.

by 10-4 on Jun 10, 2008 7:58 PM EDT reply actions

Gah!

MLB I hate you!

PTV feed went black…So I’m forced to watch WGN?

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

come on…suffer with me

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I know Anderson has little...

...experience, but Norton has a .642 career OPS against LH in like 430 career PAs

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 8:08 PM EDT reply actions

W00t

ATJ!

But I saw FYF on the on-deck circle taking some massive cuts.

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 8:09 PM EDT reply actions

I'd like to point out that

our lineup is about as not scary as it could be. Only with Corky would it be worse.

by Perrinbar on Jun 10, 2008 8:09 PM EDT reply actions

yeah…i died a little inside when i saw FYF just come up instead of chipper.

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

And you could see him

try to put that one on Addison

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Boy.

Wasn’t that surprising.

by Perrinbar on Jun 10, 2008 8:11 PM EDT reply actions

Pete and the Lemmer

Are claiming Chipper could have played today but Bobby is giving him his standard extra day.

by Perrinbar on Jun 10, 2008 8:12 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah?

Encouraging…available to PH?

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Man we better get a freaking run.

Or this is gonna be a long, long, long road trip.

by Perrinbar on Jun 10, 2008 8:13 PM EDT reply actions

This is unreal...

...no chemistry on this team, otherwise FYF and Tex would have hit HRs.

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 8:13 PM EDT reply actions

WTF?

That is so subjective. Can you back that up with some numbers?

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions

6, 12. Possibly .345

by Perrinbar on Jun 10, 2008 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions

was that the last thing you expected?

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Throwing at McCann's head?

Really?

Warning us? For what, kicking ass?

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 8:15 PM EDT reply actions

They have to warn both sides.

It’s how they do it. Otherwise the team can retaliate without any penalty.

by Perrinbar on Jun 10, 2008 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Really? I thought they could just warn one side.

But that makes sense.

I can’t wait until Lilly gets up to bat. Heap has a bit of fire in that belly of his these days.

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I suppose

I might be speaking out my ass when I say have to, but I’m pretty sure they almost always do.

by Perrinbar on Jun 10, 2008 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

norton? i’ll take it

by bigjoe on Jun 10, 2008 8:15 PM EDT reply actions

No kidding.

If that sort of thing becomes even semi-regular, getting hits with men on, we could maybe win more than one game on this trip.

by Perrinbar on Jun 10, 2008 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

that cubs lineup is NASTY

by bigjoe on Jun 10, 2008 8:19 PM EDT reply actions

Well, our wait-for-the-3-run homer lineup worked for now. Thanks Tex and FYF for making it obvious that the changeup was coming!

I don’t condone laziness. Please don’t tell me you leave your shopping cart in the middle of the parking lot.

by 10-4 on Jun 10, 2008 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

not THAT lazy...

that shit pisses me off, because there will be an open spot and I’m cruising along, only to find a frickin’ cart in it.

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Most of the time I just push it out of the way with my car. No lie, one time I pushed one all the way across the row and into a corral with one little tap from my front bumper.

It’s the little things in life…

by VegasAces on Jun 10, 2008 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

See above.

It pisses me off, but I’m still too lazy to get out of the car and move it. Plus, I don’t drive a Lexus. Yep, push that bad boy out of the way.

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Just got in...

...and it looks like I missed some action already. RAKE!! And chopchop is gone, oh darn (PLEASE note the sarcasm).

Add my thanks, Gondeee.

yep

shits been goin’ down.

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Figures

I stay on the site pretty much all day at work, and I get home, open up the game thread a little late, and that’s what happens.

Oh well. Decent first inning for Glavine. If we can steal one A) on the road B) against a lefty, and C) without Chipper, I’ll be as shocked as anyone.

by VegasAces on Jun 10, 2008 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

damn...

...was hoping blanco could get that in

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 8:30 PM EDT reply actions

Man.

Escobar better hit a homerun too. This whole average with RISP is terrible.

by Perrinbar on Jun 10, 2008 8:32 PM EDT reply actions

So...

I didnt have time to read everything I missed….did Lizziebeth come back?? Fucking Chopchop!

by clemsonfan on Jun 10, 2008 8:33 PM EDT reply actions

What happened?

I didn’t see anything of this?

by Perrinbar on Jun 10, 2008 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Basically

He crossed the line. It was an inappropriate picture that basically showed a girl with her breasts hanging out. Not only was she offended by that, but I think it was the straw breaking the camel’s back. I hope Lizzie comes back, but can’t say I’ll miss chopchop.

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

That just pisses me off for a host of reasons.

Not the least of which is the fact that I’m at work and if shit like that just pops up… Kill a fool.

by Perrinbar on Jun 10, 2008 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

That also was likely part of the reason.

I actually thought chop had come around. His Smoltz post was kinda nice earlier today. Apparently my initial instincts were correct.

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Never thought of that

Good thing I wasn’t at work, I would have been nailed for sure.

by VegasAces on Jun 10, 2008 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Boo...

...i never remembered Lilly have such a high K rate.

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 8:34 PM EDT reply actions

thats not the kinda shit we need. BAD BOTTOM OF THE LINEUP!

by bigjoe on Jun 10, 2008 8:35 PM EDT reply actions

Wow

Blanco… Nicely played. Getting the hang of CF?

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 8:37 PM EDT reply actions

Come on guys...

...we give a guy an early lead on the road…

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

Come on Tommy.

I don’t know what is up with him, but give him run support and he just falls apart this year.

by Perrinbar on Jun 10, 2008 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

time for him to wiggle out of this one

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Man.

He needs a GIDP. badly.

by Perrinbar on Jun 10, 2008 8:41 PM EDT reply actions

Awful throw by Rake...

...Diaz would have chucked that shit.

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 8:43 PM EDT reply actions

Diaz is actually.

Apparently one of the best LF this year. Who knew?

by Perrinbar on Jun 10, 2008 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

That's why

Norton is an INFIELDER! Blanco in LF, Anderson in CF…

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. I also think Blanco makes horrible throws. When Soto was held at 3rd I said to no one in particular that he could have made it because Blanco can’t make a straight throw.

by musicman on Jun 10, 2008 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

and the wheels are coming off

by bigjoe on Jun 10, 2008 8:44 PM EDT reply actions

by 10-4 on Jun 10, 2008 8:46 PM EDT reply actions

Whew...

But I wish Blanco had used two hands there.

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 8:49 PM EDT reply actions

he’s got a little andruw with him in that regard…and it scares the hell out of me

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully Abe can settle down now…of course about 34 insurance runs wouldn’t hurt

by VegasAces on Jun 10, 2008 8:50 PM EDT reply actions

Anybody see that

the D-train got sent to single-A today? Not that it matters to us anymore…just found it amusing.

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 8:52 PM EDT reply actions

after he went 0.1 IP with 8 ER and 5 BB? not that surprising

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Well no.

Not surprising after yesterday. But surprising consider how well was pitching 2 years ago.

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Makes you wonder

WTF happened. article I was reading on mlb.com says the Tigers think his stuff is there for the most part, so it has to be mental.

by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 10, 2008 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I just...

by jug on Jun 10, 2008 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

You know though

It doesn’t matter if this team were a basement dweller – I’d still go to games, and be posting here.

Think about what it’s like in Baltimore, Washington, or Kansas City? They still have fans that show up to their games, and post to their forums. I don’t think a lot of people realize how fortunate we are to have a team that’s often competitive every year, even if we have missed the playoffs the last few years.

I won't give up hope

It’s just depressing to watch sometimes. I look forward to Marmol and Wood – as lights out as Marmol supposedly is, the Braves often respond well to those situations.

haven’t we touched lidge up twice (to no avail) already?

by bigjoe on Jun 10, 2008 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Sadly

Every time we’ve touched up Lidge, it’s only to score one out of two, or tie up the game. Never to cause him to lose.

by royhobbs on Jun 10, 2008 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

that was

basically what my cynical comment was going to be…we’ll get 1 run off marmol and strand the winning run on base. wood, 123 and we lose by 1.

Honestly

I don’t say much bad about anybody, that isn’t true. But Acosta, you are the suckiest suck that ever sucked. Honestly. How do you sleep at night? You must not care, because you are terrible. But I don’t blame him. He is probably doing his best. I couldn’t do any better, that’s for sure. In this one, I blame Bobby- which I rarely do. Why bother using him? Has he proven that we can count on him? We eeked out of his first inning. Why tempt Pujols and leave him out there? Shit. Put in Gotay to pitch for all I care. But why on Earth is Manny in any pressure situation? Somebody fetch some numbers to show me how bad he sucks. That way, what I’m saying isn’t subjective.

Goodnight folks. I’m going to drink until Manny is a memory.

In a few minutes, there will be a number on your screen. Call and order Manny Acosta today and you to can start losing games. Call in the 15 minutes and I’ll throw in a CF that can’t make a straight throw and a RF that has one heck of an arm and can ground into double plays like nobody’s business!
