Atlanta Braves at Pittsburgh Pirates, May 9, 2008 7:05 PM EDT

Well the winning streak continues and we finally get our first win in a one run ball game. That is freakin' sweet! You know at this pace we are gonna end up like 27-0 this month. That would have to be a record.

We toss Glavine out there tonight after he got hammered in his last start. He was very hittable last time and he has to locate his fastball to really succeed (or have an ump with a liberal strike zone). Tom pitched a solid game against the Pirates earlier in the year but the bullpen came on and lost the game for us in extra innings. Another scary stat for Glavine is his batting average against is .315. Thats not good. Actually both of our losses to the Pirates were credited to the bullpen.

Ian Snell throws tonight (I originally had some misinformation here so I have come back to change it) for Pittsburgh. He is another one of the live-armed young guys that Pittsburgh has been attempting to build around the past couple of years. He is good enough that Braves made a pretty serious run at trading for him but it never came to fruition. I like the kid even those his stats haven't been great this year. His K rate has dipped a bit and his BAbip has gone up a lot. We should be able to knock him around a little a get into their soft bullpen. Lastly Pittsburgh has the worst team ERA in the league.

Our bullpen will most likely come into considering Glavine has only made it into the seventh once this season. Hopefully our hitting will come alive and let him pitch from the lead.

Picks.

The reason Glavine’s BAA is so high is because his BABIP against is .329. Lots of lucky hits for the other team. That should regress as the season goes on. We’re 1-4 in games where Glavine starts. Time to turn that, and our horrible road record around tonight.

1. 28,705

You know – there are a MILLION “reasons” for our demise, or our success, or whatever. I remember pulling all those excuses out of my ass when we had like TWO 10 game losing streaks last year (or was it the year before?). The Bravos have to ALL play smoothly on ALL cylinders, or we end up looking like the bumbling fools that got waxed by the Natspos.

Nicknames

Can we get a reference list going for the nicknames? There have been a few recent additions and I want to make sure other people who glance at the Blog to know whats up.

Anyone – fill in the gaps and make corrections if necessary:

KJ – Scooter, Thumby McThumbsalot
Yunel – ?, Yunescobar sometimes but that’s not the best
Larry – Chip, All-Star, Savior, you name it
Tex – Tex (second coming of Andruw?)
Brian Michael – Mac, Big Mac, etc..
Jeffy – Frenchy
Diaz – ?
Kotsay – Serial Killer (MAAAAD props to jug, i think, who coined that one)
Hudson – Huddy
Smoltz – ?
Jair – THE SURGEON!!!!!!
Hampton – the pin cushion
Glavine – ?
JoJo – ???
And, the bullpen – too many people, too volatile to list, if anyone has any names, post them up

by traphicg on May 9, 2008 1:30 PM EDT reply actions

Frenchy = FYF
Ohman = Oh for the Love of Christ
Resop = The Towel, Reitsop
McCann = Heap
Rake = Norton
Ring of Fire = Ring
KJ = All Thumbs Jefferson

(Not taking credit for any of these, just ones I’ve noticed.)

by VegasAces on May 9, 2008 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Also...

Norton = White Wilson Betemit
Acosta = Black (Panamanian) Chris Reitsma

Kotsay

No, can’t take credit. I think that was bigjoe. I do love it, and run with it.

by jug on May 9, 2008 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

This should really be put as a sub-link off the main page or something

These are phrases/pseudonyms that I often use:

God = Pujols
Resop = REitsmop, the Towel
JoJo = Stay Puft
Corky Miller = Corky the Cable Guy
Greg Norton = White Wilson Betemit
McCann = BMac (representing the LVille)
Acosta = Black (Panamanian) Chris Reitsma/Farnsworth/Any previous Braves relief pitcher who was Jeckll/Hyde on us

And finally Mark Kotsay =

Depending on the jersey we’re wearing in a game.

Diaz – Matty (Not a very good one but I’ve been using it for a while.)

by musicman on May 9, 2008 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

During yesterday’s game they had Smoltzy mic’d up. Some of the stuff was hilarious, at one point he had some shades on and was asking Mac if he thought wearing them would get him a date.

So I’m thinking something along the line of:

John “Sign me up for e-Harmony.com” Smoltz
“Barney” Smoltz (From How I Met Your Mother)
John “I need a wing-man” Smoltz

by musicman on May 9, 2008 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Didn't

Boog and Joe call him John “Hollywood” Smoltz? I think its good because it is the totally opposite of Smoltz’s persona.

by jug on May 9, 2008 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, DON’T YOU FORGET that I came up with SK.

For Yuney, we COULD steal Rex Grossman’s name and call him Sex Cannon (since he’s got…a cannon for an arm)

Glavine could be Abraham. Since, you know, he’s really old.

Whenever I see Gotay come up, I shout RUBY RUBY RUBY, so yeah. In a related note, I may be an alcoholic.

Pena…I can’t think of anything good for him. Fidel maybe? I dunno. We gotta see some of these guys in action a little more.

AND HOW COULD I FORGET BLANCO GREG WHITE SON!

I was wondering if you caught the USA Today article about Roy Halladay? I just read it while I was at lunch, and rememberd how you said he’d be your #1 seed for a starting pitcher. Found it to be a good read. Everyone should at least check out the little blurb on the left titled “Low Pitch Count Breeds Longevity”. Link is below.

In search of NAHWAL

Damn, looks like I stumbled onto the “I heart Jamie” blog again…anybody seen NAHWAL?!? If so, here are my picks:
1. 33,481
2. MattE
3. Heap homers w/ man on base, Tommy finally gets a win

BTW, some nicks I’ve seen:
Diaz = MattE
Yunel = Yuni
Hampton = Mr. Glass
Smoltz = my future husband John (did I say that out loud?)
Tex = the Adjuster (a little too much self-love going on there!)
Braves Management = Homeboy Upstairs (originally Smoltz’s reference to Schuerholz)

I get most of mine from Lauren over at BravesLove.blogspot.com; she’s really good at these nicknames…

by Lizziebeth on May 9, 2008 3:26 PM EDT reply actions

Offer still stands

I’m an equal opportunist. Find a picture that the ladies can agree upon, and I’ll post it after Jamie, every time. Except maybe when Mr. Jamie homers…

I swear, Tex does that stuff on purpose too. I had seats behind 1st base, and when fielding, all I could see was Tex’s swaying his ass back and forth all day long. And it was when Huddy was pitching, so there were a ton of groundballs, so Tex was always in that doubled over state of readiness. I’m sure my friends and all the other ladies around were enjoying the view.

if we can turn the lineup over with a guy in scoring position, we’ll score

by bigjoe on May 9, 2008 9:35 PM EDT reply actions

Also.

What a waste of a PH. Don’t bring in a guy off the bench to bunt.

by Perrinbar on May 9, 2008 9:35 PM EDT reply actions

Exactly...

At lease Norton milked a BB out of it.

I honestly feel like they are pulling out all the stops this year to win it. Questionable off-season trades, questionable bullpen management…

fuming. 1-3 against the last place team in the weakest division in the league. 1-10 in one run games. ONE AND FUCKING TEN. if we play .500 baseball, we’re something like 3 games up in the division. and its not like theres some OBVIOUS problem, like our offense isn’t doing a thing, or our bullpen sucks. WE JUST HAVE NO FUCKING LUCK. this fucking BLOWS BIG FAT DICK.

When Michael Jordan gets mad, he goes out and scores 55 points.
When Gilbert Arenas gets mad, he goes out and scores 55 points.
When Pujols gets mad, he hits two homers.
When Tom Brady gets mad, the Patriots win 18 games in a row.

Why the fuck can’t the Braves collectively get mad, and just blow the shit out of teams like the fucking Pirates? Why do they keep rolling over and dying? Why do we keep hitting into so many fucking GIDPs? Why do we keep stranding so many fucking men on base? Jesus fucking Pujols christ, I can accept defeat, but I will not accept consistently losing to the worst teams in baseball.

and do ya think

Glavine is wondering whether retirement would’ve been the better choice? Oh, except for the $8M part. Could easily have been another win for him tonight w/o all the LOB’s.

Also, we would not have

given 2 draft picks (including the 18th overall) to the Mets…

I love Tommy though.

Like anyone will read this unless they see "1 New" next to the thread

Every now and then we watch a baseball game. Every now and then the opposing pitcher implodes, and before he realizes it, he has six runs hung on his outing, two earned the hard way, and then four on a grand slam. Every now and then, that pitcher will be pulled in the first inning. Every now and then the bullpen comes in for damage control, and/or mop-up duty, but apparently, things don’t go that smoothly. Every now and then that reliever is abused just as badly, and before they realize it, they’ve got five more runs hung up on them. Every now and then our starting pitcher will be immediately be pulled in the 5th inning to conserve his arm, and relievers will come in to mop-up. Every now and then those relievers will turn in solid outings and protect a gigantic lead that doesn’t really need by definition, protection. Every now and then the opposition will be flailing wildly and helplessly at a repeatedly pounded strike zone. Every now and then, the Pete Orrs, the Willy Aybars, the Corky Millers, the Craig Wilsons, the Todd Pratts of the game will get to play the length of an official game due to the circumstances.

Every now and then a game like this will just become painful to watch, and we as fans will actually get bored of seeing our team winning by such a gigantic margin. And then every now and then, as a result of such a dominant win, we as fans seek amusement elsewhere. Like on the internet, speaking with veritable strangers vaguely anonymously through repeated comments of witty banter. Every now and then.

If every game were like this for us, I wouldn’t complain. At all.

So...

Sorry I missed most of the game. Girlfriends don’t really understand watching the Braves, getting drunk, and blogging with a bunch of veritable strangers. I did get to see most of the game, at least Bennett—aka 2009-Moylan, screw shit up for us.

What the hell. 6 straight. and we lose another 1 RUN GAME to the effing PIRATES!? Nothing against the Pirates, because they are not a bad club this year, the principle of the thing.

Question though, why can’t we win on the road? What is so different?

Anyway, I’ll be on tomorrow.

Jamie Kotsay's at all the home games...

... the Braves look up into the stands, see God’s beautiful creation, and want to impress. There’s no Jamie Kotsay on the road, so…

No effing subject

Damn, damn, damn. All the good feelings from yesterday, shot down by one little basehit. I had the XM going in the car, and as soon as the (crappy) Pirates announcer said “base hit up the middle”, I turned it off. Then, the follwing exchange:

My wife: “Had enough?”
Me: “Why should I listen to them celebrate?”
Wife: “They won fair and square, what’s the big deal?”
Me: “Yeah, well….fuck them.”

I can handle losing to say, Arizona. But the Pirates??? I’ve already seen enough of them this year. Let’s win the last three and get the hell out of there.
