Minors Update 5/6-5/8
5/6
Indianapolis 7, Richmond 1
Diory Hernandez continues to hit with 2 more hits at AAA while playing 2B now. I like him better at second and some others have said so also. His bat definitely profiles better there. He still has some growing pains though as he made two errors in this game. Josh Anderson also had 3 hits in the loss. Also one last note. Scott Williamson pitched in this game. I didn't even know we had this guy. He had a great arm back in the day and was a go to reliever for a couple different teams. He hasn't really been relevant since 2005 though but *think* he has been injured.
Mississippi 2, West Tenn. 5
Jason Perry hit his 7th HR and Mark Jurich chipped in with his 3rd. I mean other than that i really don't know what to say. There aren't any prospects here to keep an eye on at this point. Soooooo moving on.
Potomac 4, Myrtle Beach 3
Brandon Powell hit his second homer of the year and other than that nothing too special went down in this game. Deunte Heath gave up 4 runs in 7 innings and still had a 1/1 K/BB rate. on the year he has a 22/25 K/BB ratio which just does not bode well at all.
Rome 0, Augusta 7
Wow a 4 game sweep by the Greenjackets. Also the Rome team piled 4 errors on themselves (2 from Freeman, Coe and Gress had the others). Let me also not forget the 15 strikeouts they piled up. Just not a good game. On top of it Jeff Locke got hammered pretty hard in his 4.2 IP and he gave up his first homer of the year.
5/7
Indianapolis 5, Richmond 6
Another 2 hit game for Hernandez in this one raising his average to .467 on the AAA season and extending his hitting streak to 12 games I believe. Very impressive start. Infante also had a couple knocks and 3 RBI for the R-Braves and Scott Thorman and Canizares both chipped in with hits. Nothing else exciting here other than Phil Stockman lowering his ERA to .89
Mississippi 7, West Tenn. 5
Mark Jurich busted out the whoopin stick in this one with a 3-4 ,2 doubles and 5 RBI performance. He is probably the second best hitter on the team right now, which isn't really saying a whole lot, but this is one of the toughest hitting environments in organized baseball (the Southern League). Perry, Holt and Guzman all had 2+ hits in the game to drive the offense a little more. Todd Redmond has given up 4 runs in 3 straight starts. The shine is starting to wear off a little.
Potomac 5, Myrtle Beach 11
There were a lot of hitters in this game but Willie Cabrera and Chad Ludahl both get special props for 3 hits and a HR. Kyle Cofield continues to have control issues. He walked 4 in 3 innings of work tonight and has walked 3+ in 6 straight starts. His stuff must be good because he isn't giving up a lot of runs. But still...
Rome 5, Greenville 1
Freddie Freeman continues to be the most consistent hitter for the Rome team going 2-4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI. Heyward went 1-4 with a double and Benji Johnson hit his first homer of the season. Scott Diamond went 7 strong innings giving up only 1 run. He has pitched very solid baseball so far this season.
5/8
Indianapolis 2, Richmond 1
This is another 1 run game for Richmond. They are 7-7 in 1 run games this year (thats right, 14 of them total). Scott Williamson started the game for some reason but he gave up 2 runs in 1.2 innings and Charlie Morton promptly came in and went 7.1 allowing only 5 hits and no runs. Nice. He is currently sporting a 1.76 era.
Mississippi 9, West Tenn 7
OH MY GOD KALA KAAIHUE FINALLY HIT A HOMER IN AN AA GAME!!!!! STOP THE FREAKING PRESSES.
Myrtle Beach - Off Day
Rome 3, Greenville 5
Freddie Freeman added another double and Adam Coe chipped in a 2-4 performance but again these young Braves couldn't bring in the win. Eric Barrett wasn't his usual dominant self as he gave up 5 runs (3 earned) in his 3.1 innings of work. Michael Broadway did come in for 3.2 innings of work allowing only 1 hit and striking out 5

There’s a kid in AA (perry) who’s hit 7 home runs in two weeks and he’s not a prospect? James Parr (a kid who just turned 22 years old) is an overlooked prospect. Dustin Evans has a great arm (he is a prospect). Cuevas is a prospect… And Creek has been under the radar. Are they not prospects because they’re not still in diapers? There is so much unseen potential in these guys (and when I say unseen, I mean outside of the organization looking in)...They’re playing like sh*t in Miss, no one is doing well. I would still say they have prospects… I mean, Jeff Locke has one decent outting and all of a sudden he’s on the “hot list”... PS, Heath is a stud

Riiiiiiight
Well perry has been with 3 organizations in the past two seasons even up to the AAA level and he was released so no I don’t consider him a prospect at all. He is a 27 year old at AA, that is what most people would call a Journeyman. Cuevas is the only one that might be a prospect. Sure he has a live arm but he has pretty much gotten hammered so far this year. He pitched well last year sure, but he was pitching at Myrtle Beach. I don’t know what to think of Creek yet, but he’ll have to find another position or learn to hit for more power before anyone considers him a prospect. And Jeff Locke had two starts in a week where he didn’t allow a single run. I do a weekly hot list so i figured that qualified for him being hot. Heath has a good arm, but studs don’t have a near even K/BB ratio. Maybe you should learn the terms a little better eh?

I didn’t realize Perry was 27…
And a prospect is a player who realistically has the ability to play in the big leagues but hasn’t gotten time yet….Cuevas’s arm has bothered him since spring training… And like I said, Parr is a prospect, and so is Evans (they’ve been pitching like crap, but they’re definitely on the Braves map…

And at this point in the developmental stage, the Braves don’t nearly as much of a sh*t as you do about K/BB ratios… Heath has a big league arm and big league makeup

Alright you’re just going to take whatever you want a run with it. I never said Heath wasn’t a prospect or that I didn’t like him. I said his walk rate wasn’t good and it would be a problem. I guess I should have said “if he doesn’t straighten it out” to qualify it for people who just want to assume things. An even walk rate in a pitchers park at HIGH A means you need to get that shit fixed or you aren’t going to pan out at a higher level. Show me SOMEONE in the majors with a K/BB ratio who has been successful for more than a month or two. Please.
And you let me know when you find this supposed “map” that Braves have with these players on it that you have a Jones for. A prospect is someone who has a realistic chance to make an impact at the major league level. Lots of people make the team and even get the chance to play when the roster expands in September.

I’m not running with anything..I’m telling you that a player is a big league prospect when a scout or a member of player personel deems the player to have the tools necessary to play in the big leagues. Prospects are classified in sub categories but non the less, they are still big league prospects…. And on Heath’s K/BB ratio… he walked 17 in 71 IP’s last year… What has changed to cause this rise in his BB’s?? Do you know? Until you do, and until this is proved a fatal blow to his career or if in 2 years he’s still going downhill and has walked 99 people in 100 innings, maybe then we can say, he’s really got a problem… Did I say he’s going to be in the big leagues in a week and he better sort it out? NO, it’s player development... I could say Locke needs to stop giving up so many freaking hits..If he doesn’t he’s screwed.. but its player development... The map I speak of is plain as day and you should be able to see it. Tommy Hanson could have easily been put in AA but instead, Evans took his place (after Evans absolutely crapped on himself in Myrtle last year). If Tommy was sent back to Myrtle, and Evans to AA, that says to me, they see promise in this kid (which there is, its just unrealized numbers wise). The stuff is there..

Heath walked 50 total in 126 innings last year… Granted he gave up as many hits as innings pitched…

Alright I’m done with this. Again, all I said about Heath was his walk rate doesn’t ‘bode well’. Your logic is riddled with holes and I’m tired of poking at them, so you win dude. You just can’t be beat.

Williamson
I remember us signing him a while back (last year? two years ago?) when I believe he was still recovering from TJ. I feel like he did pitch in spring training and then had a setback, but I might be wrong about that. I get him confused with that other reliever we signed who was in the same position (former go-to guy recovering from TJ) but who could never make it back and retired a bit ago.
I can see why they started him. Obviously at this point it’s all hands on deck for the Braves pitching wise and they wanted to see him face all the best hitters along with building up his arm strength a little. I’m sure they didn’t expect him to go more than 2 innings. By the way, if Jo-Jo is disabled (I think that the blister issue is going to be more of a recurring problem then Buddy’s neck) does anyone think that Morton will get the call?

pt.2
I guess I was wrong about him. We signed him 4/26 after he was in spring training with the Giants. He pitched decently last year (16 Ks in 14.1 innings) but for some reason the “pitching rich” O’s cut him loose.
I got him confused with Tanyon Sturtz, who actually is still toiling in AA ball somewhere.

Williamson's start
Scott started because there was a threat of rain in Richmond. So they started a reliever and hoped to get two innings in before the rain came. The rain didn’t come. And Morton ended up coming in before he had completed his two innings…
