Pads @ Braves: Bring the Sweep

San Diego Padres at Atlanta Braves, May 8, 2008 1:10 PM EDT

Rookie Jo-Jo Reyes comes to the mound against former Brave Wil Ledezma. If we win this game it will mean several things for us. Firstly, it would extend our win streak to 6 games and would be the longest such streak of the season for us. Second, it would put us in third place by ourselves (the Mets don't play tomorrow) and it would make us 6-0 in the month of May.

Reyes pitched reasonably well in his first start, though he had an inning where he reverted to his old ways of walking a few guys. You guys know I'm high on him and he has had solid control all all month in Richmond, so I think he just had a little hiccup against the Reds.

Ledezma has been pitching very well so far this year (where was this last year?) but it has all been out of the bullpen. His ERA is 1.96 and he has gone as long as 5 innings in a game against Colorado. I really don't know what to expect out of him. Everyone said we should have started him while he was pitching with us and that his skills lent themselves more readily to a starting role. I dunno, I hope we pound him.

Kotsay, as you guys surely know, has an 8 game hitting streak. He has multiple hits in 4 of the eight games is hitting a smoking hot .406 during that span. He's starting to make us forget about Andruw.

This mad e me chuckle:

(Sorry this is late, the site went down for maintenance while I was typing this last night.)

Hmmm...

First pitch: 1:10 pm EST (per Skip’s call on radio) = 13:10 military style
Time of game: 3:19

13:10 + 3:19 = 16:29 = 4:29 pm EST

I’ll let you decide if that’s AAB worthy, gondee.

That’s why JoJo scares me every time.

by Perrinbar on May 8, 2008 1:18 PM EDT reply actions

But hey

Infante made a DP. So maybe it was a good choice. And only 2, partly because of Tex mind you. Still we can score now and erase that problem.

He’s still got discipline problems at the plate. Something that is going to hamper him for a long time.

by Perrinbar on May 8, 2008 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah.

Like I was saying last night, it seems like he gets up there and thinks he has to hit a HR to be a hero. He needs to learn situational hitting. I would love for Chipper to just take him deer-hunting this off season and talk to him about how to hit the ball where guys aren’t playing to get singles and drive in runs.

by jug on May 8, 2008 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

That's going to go over real well

Jeff: Baby, I’m not going to be home for the next two weeks.

Jeff: Ah’m going huntin! With Chipper! He’s going to teach me how to be a better hitter!
Catie: What?! You’re going to leave me on our first off-season as a married couple?? AND to go hunting
Jeff: Uhh… yeah!
Catie: Oh, no you’re not. Just what does deer hunting have to do with learning how to hit?!
Jeff: Uhh… y’got me! But I suppose if I just sit next to him for a long time, I’ll become as good as he does! Look at what Liriano did next to Santana!
Catie: Leary-who Jeffrey, you’re not going hunting with Chipper. You’re staying home with me in November, and we’re going shopping.

by jug on May 8, 2008 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

The Padres haven’t given up an earned run all game.

by jug on May 8, 2008 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

i love presents

San Diego appears to be giftwrapping this game for us. Chipper swinging 3-0 needs to at least move the runner over. Luckily, Padres like losing.

Interesting thought...

...wouldn’t it be sweet if down the stretch the Pads are out and we aren’t and we traded to get Maddux?

by jug on May 8, 2008 3:48 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe?

Depends on who we trade. I’ll reserve my judgment on Frank Wren for a few years, but I pretty much guarantee he is no Johnny.

by Perrinbar on May 8, 2008 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

No idea who we'd trade

or if it would even be smart…but, I was thinking that if Smoltz is in the pen, we have Huddy, Glavine, JJ, ....? could use somebody. And I am sure Maddux would love another shot at a ring…

Jojo left with blister
braves runs all unearned, game-tying one on a WP by heath bell
norton with another rbi pinch-hit

by royhobbs on May 8, 2008 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Tie ballgame

4-4, Top of the 8th

We just tied it on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 7th

RBIs have come from Tex (1) and Norton (2).

JoJo went 2.2, came out with a blister, the Buddy went 2.0, came out after a collision with a runner. Campillo went 1.1, Bennett went 1.2, now Ring is out there.

by musicman on May 8, 2008 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

This is time

For Royce Ring to get his redemption win against his former team. If a sack of shit like Tyler Yates can get one, a decent pitcher like Ring should.

But dude’s got balls of steel. Still remember how hard he played in game 163 last year, topped off with a huge clutch strikeout on Matt Holliday. Total respect for the man who will likely be Hoffman’s replacement by year’s end.

Thanks anyway!

I really am appreciative of your considerate efforts and you kind apology! But don’t worry about finding a pic of Tex (for me anyway) – I’m just not particularly a Tex luster-afterer…he seems to already have quite an intense personal relationship going on with his, um, little bat! And probably his wife, too. Guess I’m getting old fashioned in my old age…I try not to covet the married ones! For fun, I tried to post a pic of smoltzie’s backside earlier in reply (from webshots), but it didn’t work. I’m pretty much just here for the baseball – and the excellent spelling and grammar. But thanks again for being a sport!

Hell of a game!

I was following at work on mlb.com Gameday and also reading comments on here, didn’t want to post for fear of corporate retribution.

Anyway, I raced home to listen to the end on XM…obviously, much better than Gameday, especially with Skip on the mic. (I loved his comment on FYF’s IBB – “the way he’s going right now, that could be the best thing for Atlanta”. And it was.)

Very glad that we got the win, both for the sake of that and there was no Towel appearance. The things that scare me:

1) only The Towel and Boyer are rested going into tomorrow
2) two more injuries to our pitching staff. It’s been said before, but I’ll say it again: WTF!?

by VegasAces on May 8, 2008 5:06 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, the injuries suck. We have guys on the farm that can fill in, Stockman can take Buddy’s place if he’s out for an extended period of time. And there still Chuck James/Charlie Morton types that can spot start if needed.
