Pads @ Braves: Bring the Sweep
San Diego Padres at Atlanta Braves, May 8, 2008 1:10 PM EDT
Rookie Jo-Jo Reyes comes to the mound against former Brave Wil Ledezma. If we win this game it will mean several things for us. Firstly, it would extend our win streak to 6 games and would be the longest such streak of the season for us. Second, it would put us in third place by ourselves (the Mets don't play tomorrow) and it would make us 6-0 in the month of May.
Reyes pitched reasonably well in his first start, though he had an inning where he reverted to his old ways of walking a few guys. You guys know I'm high on him and he has had solid control all all month in Richmond, so I think he just had a little hiccup against the Reds.
Ledezma has been pitching very well so far this year (where was this last year?) but it has all been out of the bullpen. His ERA is 1.96 and he has gone as long as 5 innings in a game against Colorado. I really don't know what to expect out of him. Everyone said we should have started him while he was pitching with us and that his skills lent themselves more readily to a starting role. I dunno, I hope we pound him.
Kotsay, as you guys surely know, has an 8 game hitting streak. He has multiple hits in 4 of the eight games is hitting a smoking hot .406 during that span. He's starting to make us forget about Andruw.
This mad e me chuckle:
(Sorry this is late, the site went down for maintenance while I was typing this last night.)

infante
Kelly must just need a day to rest. Its amazing how Bobby never worries about Francoeur needing rest.
We just had an off day on Monday…
Infante has a career OBP of .298 in over 1600 PAs. Not what I like to see from my leadoff hitter.

But hey
Infante made a DP. So maybe it was a good choice. And only 2, partly because of Tex mind you. Still we can score now and erase that problem.
I can't watch the game...
...but I’ll just assume that KJ would have screwed up the DP somehow.

All Thumbs Jefferson
Probably could have turned it. I’m not sure though, Tex had an E and SK botched a play so anything is possible.
by jug on May 8, 2008 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Well the hit to CF that scored 2
was botched. I mean, he could not have caught it, but he misplayed a tough bounce and it went past him.

So Diaz the Ump sucks
Apparently doesn’t know that when a check swing crosses the plate its a strike
WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHY ARE WE SWINGING AT THE FIRST EFFING PITCH?!?
But Chipper an FYF too.
And Ledezma has 11 BBs in 18.1 IP this year.

Well, I'll be honest.
I don’t have any confidence in Jo-jo anyways. He’s yet to prove he can handle the big leagues.

It's not usually a good idea.
for a pitcher to do that. So many things that can go wrong. They need to just tell someone.
His deal...
...is his 1.64 career WHIP, and 33/32 BB/K rate in 56 MLB innings…before today.
by Smoltz's Beard on May 8, 2008 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions
And like...
..56 innings really tell you anything.
small. sample. size.
I’m not disagreeing, just saying…
His minor league stats are a better indicator?
by Smoltz's Beard on May 8, 2008 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Well...
...his minor league stats have been far better. Just hasn’t translated I guess, maybe he is nothing more than a AAAA pitcher. But right now it’s not like we have a whole lot of choices…

I think I like him equally with McCann
McCann is a beast. Yunel is phenomenal. I can’t pick. By right now, FYF and All Thumbs Jefferson are not on my top 10 list.

You know
Francoeur’s eyes are the size of plates right now. These are the situations he says he loves, but has really taken advantage of sparingly this season.
one more time ... for sting!! a sports blog written by two opinionated males
Don't count on it
Corky the Cable Guy is a guaranteed out, and Buddy’s no better. I have a feeling this will be a game where everyone will be scrupulously examining the LOB and TB columns, and wonder why we lost.
one more time ... for sting!! a sports blog written by two opinionated males
By the way.
Isn’t it astounding we are only down by 1 run? I mean honestly they should have more runs by now.

Safe to say...
this has not been frenchy’s best homestand
I'm afraid
his consecutive starts streak is in jeopardy.
If he doesn’t step it up, we will have to play Blanco or somebody else over there.
by jug on May 8, 2008 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah.
He’s still got discipline problems at the plate. Something that is going to hamper him for a long time.
Yeah.
Like I was saying last night, it seems like he gets up there and thinks he has to hit a HR to be a hero. He needs to learn situational hitting. I would love for Chipper to just take him deer-hunting this off season and talk to him about how to hit the ball where guys aren’t playing to get singles and drive in runs.
by jug on May 8, 2008 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions
That's going to go over real well
Jeff: Baby, I’m not going to be home for the next two weeks.
Catie: Jeffrey. Where do you think you’re going??
Jeff: Ah’m going huntin! With Chipper! He’s going to teach me how to be a better hitter!
Catie: What?! You’re going to leave me on our first off-season as a married couple?? AND to go hunting
Jeff: Uhh… yeah!
Catie: Oh, no you’re not. Just what does deer hunting have to do with learning how to hit?!
Jeff: Uhh… y’got me! But I suppose if I just sit next to him for a long time, I’ll become as good as he does! Look at what Liriano did next to Santana!
Catie: Leary-who Jeffrey, you’re not going hunting with Chipper. You’re staying home with me in November, and we’re going shopping.
Jeff: .... yes dear

The worst part is
I’m watching on ESPN’s GameCast, Wil Ledezma’s ERA getting smaller and smaller with each out. I just know that he escapes Atlanta with a win, that whomever he starts against next is going to annihilate him.
one more time ... for sting!! a sports blog written by two opinionated males
Man, ESPN’s gamecast can’t be more obvious. You’ll see “Incoming pitch hit in play” and then there is this huge delay, and then the 2 clicks into a 3, and then the result of the play is shown.
one more time ... for sting!! a sports blog written by two opinionated males
Frenchy should pitch
‘cuz it’s not like he’s contributing anything to the offensive side. Maybe he can be like a reverse Micah Owings, and then come in to pitch and then give up zero hits en route to the completion of the game.

What the heck is Estes
still doing in the majors? I remember when he used to be good, you know when the Giants were too.
Heh..
...he just got recalled from Portland of the PCL.
Watched him pinch hit the other night against the Mets AAA team.
damn
you know its a slow day offensively, when we have the top of our lineup up and we cant score off shawn estes
Blech.
I’m going to write off today’s game and hope we can tear another 5 in a row starting tomorrow.
Looks like
The Padres are stabbing repeatedly at the Braves biggest weakness – bringing in nothing but left-handed pitchers. I feel like we’re facing the Yankees in the World Series again.

So can Campillo
pull a Maddux and just stay in there for the rest of the game? We need someone to step up and save our bullpen for the next series.
That used to be Moylan's job

i love presents
San Diego appears to be giftwrapping this game for us. Chipper swinging 3-0 needs to at least move the runner over. Luckily, Padres like losing.
Interesting thought...
...wouldn’t it be sweet if down the stretch the Pads are out and we aren’t and we traded to get Maddux?
Maybe?
Depends on who we trade. I’ll reserve my judgment on Frank Wren for a few years, but I pretty much guarantee he is no Johnny.
No idea who we'd trade
or if it would even be smart…but, I was thinking that if Smoltz is in the pen, we have Huddy, Glavine, JJ, ....? could use somebody. And I am sure Maddux would love another shot at a ring…

Whats the score, inning, how long did JoJo last, how did we score???
Top 8, 4-4 game
Jojo left with blister
braves runs all unearned, game-tying one on a WP by heath bell
norton with another rbi pinch-hit
one more time ... for sting!! a sports blog written by two opinionated males
Tie ballgame
4-4, Top of the 8th
We just tied it on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 7th
RBIs have come from Tex (1) and Norton (2).
JoJo went 2.2, came out with a blister, the Buddy went 2.0, came out after a collision with a runner. Campillo went 1.1, Bennett went 1.2, now Ring is out there.
This is time
For Royce Ring to get his redemption win against his former team. If a sack of shit like Tyler Yates can get one, a decent pitcher like Ring should.

Bell is a large, large man. He’s going to turn all Wickman at a certain point.
He is indeed big
But dude’s got balls of steel. Still remember how hard he played in game 163 last year, topped off with a huge clutch strikeout on Matt Holliday. Total respect for the man who will likely be Hoffman’s replacement by year’s end.

I searched for an hour..
at work yesterday for a picture of Tex doing his patented pregame toe-touches, but to no avail. I guess I will just have to make my own when I’m there in a couple of weeks.
Thanks anyway!
I really am appreciative of your considerate efforts and you kind apology! But don’t worry about finding a pic of Tex (for me anyway) – I’m just not particularly a Tex luster-afterer…he seems to already have quite an intense personal relationship going on with his, um, little bat! And probably his wife, too. Guess I’m getting old fashioned in my old age…I try not to covet the married ones! For fun, I tried to post a pic of smoltzie’s backside earlier in reply (from webshots), but it didn’t work. I’m pretty much just here for the baseball – and the excellent spelling and grammar. But thanks again for being a sport!
What we witnessed here
Was a thing of beauty.
And there was a pretty good game on just now too.

Hell of a game!
I was following at work on mlb.com Gameday and also reading comments on here, didn’t want to post for fear of corporate retribution.
Anyway, I raced home to listen to the end on XM…obviously, much better than Gameday, especially with Skip on the mic. (I loved his comment on FYF’s IBB – “the way he’s going right now, that could be the best thing for Atlanta”. And it was.)
Very glad that we got the win, both for the sake of that and there was no Towel appearance. The things that scare me:
1) only The Towel and Boyer are rested going into tomorrow
2) two more injuries to our pitching staff. It’s been said before, but I’ll say it again: WTF!?
w/r/t pitching-injuries
Yeah, the injuries suck. We have guys on the farm that can fill in, Stockman can take Buddy’s place if he’s out for an extended period of time. And there still Chuck James/Charlie Morton types that can spot start if needed.
I am kidding
b/c I am sure there won’t be a bonus point this time.
