Pads @ Braves Game Thread and NAHWAL
San Diego Padres at Atlanta Braves, May 7, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
Do you guys realize we are 12-4 at home this season? Only the surprising St. Louis has as good a record at home so far. The downside is that we are 4-11 on the road but I'll bring that up again when we are actually on the road.
We are tossing Hudson up there tomorrow and he was very strong last start after getting off of that flu bug that has been going around. Obviously with Huddy having the season he has had I feel pretty good about the game in general. The amazing thing about Hudson is RH hitters only have 2 XBH against him this season in 72 ABs. Thats just amazing. (Other quirky stats include: No LH hitter has scored a run against Hudson and LH have more ABs against him at 88 vs. 72).
Randy Wolf will be throwing for the Pads and several of our guys have had good success against him in that past though outside of Chipper and Kotsay no one else really has a bunch of ABs against him. I would guess we'll see Diaz starting since he is 4-5 career off of him.
By the way, Chipper Jones is good.
I was sorely disappointed in the fact we didn't get our 500 posts. I will assume some of the blame because I had to be out to the house tonight, but failure will not be tolerated again.

Is there an accurate, up to date scoreboard for NAHWAL?? I feel like at SOME point I should’ve won a point. My goal for the year is to hit 5 points. Yep, aim low for less disappointment.

I’ve got Wolf on a couple of fantasy teams this year, so I’ve watched some of his starts. He’s looked pretty good thus far, and I think we’ll have a harder time than we did yesterday. Won’t be around to watch the game tonight cause of softball, so good luck in the quest for 500 comments.

The other, more subtle reason would be to just abandon that at bat. Rather than getting into a must throw a strike situation with a hitter, take your chances with the pitcher. It seemed to work out.

The guy is a machine. Has he had, what, 2 or 3 games off? I’m almost afraid we are over-working him. Of course, we don’t really have too much of a backup in Corky.

He obviously has power...
...and he seems to be getting a bit more patient. But there is more to it. He hasn’t quite mastered situational hitting just yet. He just goes up there swinging.
by jug on May 7, 2008 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Just checked baseball reference
and at least this year, Frenchy is way way better against starters the first at bat than any subsequent. Talking a drop from the 300s to the mid to low 200s in average.
by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Soo...
...what does that exactly mean? He gets too anxious because he thinks he knows the pitcher?
by jug on May 7, 2008 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Or.
He’s just swinging too much and pitchers are adjusting. I’m not too sure. Plus it’s a tiny sample size so it’s not entirely useful. With Frenchy though I would guess on the pitchers adjusting and him not adjusting. That’s kind of his MO.
by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs

Boy does he.
I weep thinking of the huge contract he’ll sign with some other team. I hate Scott Boras.

that segment with boog mocking the guys on the phone was a riot.

Freakin' Mac
he hits like .800 with no one on…but when the bases are clogged with runners he’s lost.

I dont get Boyer.
In my opinion he has great stuff. He has been in 15 games this year where he has not given up a run, but three games where he has given up at least 2 runs. Hopefully he’s figuring it out.

Boyer
Games where he hasn’t given up a run = 16.2 scoreless innings
Games where he HAS given up a run = 10 earned in 4 innings
Weird.

OH FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST COMING ON FOR THE SAVE?? oh…for the love of christ
by bigjoe on May 7, 2008 9:24 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
That's not my favorite
choice. Although with our pen I still always wonder. We need Smoltz to get healthy and just become old closer Smoltz.

Unless he can go
back to starting that is.

I’d rather have Oh for the love of christ that manny to be manny

why play the matchups….when you don’t have the personnel
by jug on May 7, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well it's weird, but honestly.
Saves are overrated and Closers are too. Unless they are elite. So hell use all the pen, just win the game.

Is this guy's name pronounced
Crabby??
by mvandonsel on May 7, 2008 9:31 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Nope.
Just Crab. But what the hell is Callix? That’s just nuts.
by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah.
It’s weird. I was watching baseball tonight like three weeks ago. And Callix had a web gem, and nobody would say his name. They said, “and there is this great play from the Padres.” I laughed.

That's pitching Acosta.
5 straight. I like it. Keep it up boys.

for as much bitching as we did about huddy and the flyballs, he finished the night with a 13:5 GB-FB ratio. yeah. sometimes we should just shut the hell up

Back from the game

Donning the home white, in celebration of the win. It was funny, when I saw Boyer in the game, I did the OJ Simpson in court cringe, and waited for the worst – I mean if Huddy couldn’t get called strikes, Boyer was downright fucked. But amazingly he got out of it, and here’s the best part:
In between innings, the cameramen did their thing, the usual rotation of showing smoking hot 18-26 blonde girl, child, old person, minority, wash, rinse, repeat, on the big screen. But somewhere in between, they showed Boyer on the big screen in the dugout, with a stat bar saying Blaine Boyer, RP – Leads team with 6 holds, and he put his head down all embarrassed as if he were a halfway decent player or something. What about something like runs/innings pitched ratio, or something like that? I guess a featherweight like Boyer needs all the positive reinforcement he can get; and if it means public praise, whatever, as long as he can keep racking up scoreless innings.
