Pads @ Braves Game Thread and NAHWAL

San Diego Padres at Atlanta Braves, May 7, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

Do you guys realize we are 12-4 at home this season? Only the surprising St. Louis has as good a record at home so far. The downside is that we are 4-11 on the road but I'll bring that up again when we are actually on the road.

We are tossing Hudson up there tomorrow and he was very strong last start after getting off of that flu bug that has been going around. Obviously with Huddy having the season he has had I feel pretty good about the game in general. The amazing thing about Hudson is RH hitters only have 2 XBH against him this season in 72 ABs. Thats just amazing. (Other quirky stats include: No LH hitter has scored a run against Hudson and LH have more ABs against him at 88 vs. 72).

Randy Wolf will be throwing for the Pads and several of our guys have had good success against him in that past though outside of Chipper and Kotsay no one else really has a bunch of ABs against him. I would guess we'll see Diaz starting since he is 4-5 career off of him.

By the way, Chipper Jones is good.

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG
2008 - Chipper Jones 29 115 23 49 6 0 10 29 14 10 0 0 .426 .481 .739

I was sorely disappointed in the fact we didn't get our 500 posts. I will assume some of the blame because I had to be out to the house tonight, but failure will not be tolerated again.

Is there an accurate, up to date scoreboard for NAHWAL?? I feel like at SOME point I should’ve won a point. My goal for the year is to hit 5 points. Yep, aim low for less disappointment.

Picks.

I’ve got Wolf on a couple of fantasy teams this year, so I’ve watched some of his starts. He’s looked pretty good thus far, and I think we’ll have a harder time than we did yesterday. Won’t be around to watch the game tonight cause of softball, so good luck in the quest for 500 comments.

well

what an ugly 2nd inning this is turning out to be.

by jug on May 7, 2008 7:29 PM EDT reply actions

Tex

probably could have had that even though the throw was terrible. He took his eyes off it

by jug on May 7, 2008 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Not sure

why you would walk Baird… Hope Wolf grounds into double play, otherwise you have to pitch to Giles.

by jug on May 7, 2008 7:31 PM EDT reply actions

Plus the force out at the plate.

by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

The other, more subtle reason would be to just abandon that at bat. Rather than getting into a must throw a strike situation with a hitter, take your chances with the pitcher. It seemed to work out.

by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

true

I suppose it was the right call, because if he hits a ground ball to the right side it could score a run. I just could see it backfiring.

by jug on May 7, 2008 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh yeah

It’s one of those types of decisions. I’ve never examined the statistics of it, I’m sure someone has, but it seems like the best move, especially with the pitcher up.

Or we should

I like this new Randy Wolf.

Who needs a quick inning when you can walk everyone in sight. Also we could do with someone who isn’t Heap up right now. He ain’t so hot with men on.

by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 7:40 PM EDT reply actions

Heap

The guy is a machine. Has he had, what, 2 or 3 games off? I’m almost afraid we are over-working him. Of course, we don’t really have too much of a backup in Corky.

by jug on May 7, 2008 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

by jug on May 7, 2008 8:03 PM EDT reply actions

Frenchy.

Time to swing that bat and actually hit the ball, at least into the outfield, if not the stands.

by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

Bah!

That’s what I didn’t want you to do. Frenchy, not so clutch.

Hey,

you got the first letter right at least.

by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

i’m telling you guys: a shock collar on frenchy would only result in good things

by bigjoe on May 7, 2008 8:08 PM EDT reply actions

He obviously has power...

...and he seems to be getting a bit more patient. But there is more to it. He hasn’t quite mastered situational hitting just yet. He just goes up there swinging.

by jug on May 7, 2008 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Just checked baseball reference

and at least this year, Frenchy is way way better against starters the first at bat than any subsequent. Talking a drop from the 300s to the mid to low 200s in average.

by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Soo...

...what does that exactly mean? He gets too anxious because he thinks he knows the pitcher?

by jug on May 7, 2008 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Or.

He’s just swinging too much and pitchers are adjusting. I’m not too sure. Plus it’s a tiny sample size so it’s not entirely useful. With Frenchy though I would guess on the pitchers adjusting and him not adjusting. That’s kind of his MO.

by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

His career numbers

Aren’t like that. He gets marginally better each time over his career, but this year not so much.

by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions

frenchy actually sees more P/AB this season than chipper, SK and heap. so yeah, he has improved. but those other guys are at least, you know, hitting

by bigjoe on May 7, 2008 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Like I said.

I don’t know what the deal is, but Chipper seems to manage to almost get knock a run in, then it falls apart for everyone behind him.

by bigjoe on May 7, 2008 9:11 PM EDT reply actions

Ah Tex.

Not as clutch as you could be.

by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 9:12 PM EDT reply actions

tex needs a new nickname until he starts hitting some bombs. boomstick just won’t cut it anymore. suggestions?

by bigjoe on May 7, 2008 9:13 PM EDT reply actions

i’d nominate SUCK AND CHUCK, but SOMEONE already has that name

by bigjoe on May 7, 2008 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Here comes Boyer.

This should be nerve wracking.

by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 9:14 PM EDT reply actions

how about FIZZLESTICK?

by bigjoe on May 7, 2008 9:15 PM EDT reply actions

He still plays defense though

by jug on May 7, 2008 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Boy does he.

I weep thinking of the huge contract he’ll sign with some other team. I hate Scott Boras.

by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Don’t hate the player hate the game.

by jug on May 7, 2008 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope.

I’m hating the player. Besides Boras is a dick. Huge walking penis.

by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

fuck yeah, we traded 5 prospects for TEX’S DEFENSE!!!

by bigjoe on May 7, 2008 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

ahaha

We should call Tex: Salty-Andrus-Feliz…who else?

by jug on May 7, 2008 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

wow

blowyer… he did good.

by jug on May 7, 2008 9:17 PM EDT reply actions

FYF

by jug on May 7, 2008 9:21 PM EDT reply actions

Francouer

Striking out?! Well I never.

by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 9:21 PM EDT reply actions

that segment with boog mocking the guys on the phone was a riot.

by bigjoe on May 7, 2008 9:21 PM EDT reply actions

Freakin' Mac

he hits like .800 with no one on…but when the bases are clogged with runners he’s lost.

by jug on May 7, 2008 9:22 PM EDT reply actions

I dont get Boyer.

In my opinion he has great stuff. He has been in 15 games this year where he has not given up a run, but three games where he has given up at least 2 runs. Hopefully he’s figuring it out.

by mvandonsel on May 7, 2008 9:24 PM EDT reply actions

Boyer

Games where he hasn’t given up a run = 16.2 scoreless innings
Games where he HAS given up a run = 10 earned in 4 innings

Weird.

by mvandonsel on May 7, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

OH FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST COMING ON FOR THE SAVE?? oh…for the love of christ

by bigjoe on May 7, 2008 9:24 PM EDT reply actions

That's not my favorite

choice. Although with our pen I still always wonder. We need Smoltz to get healthy and just become old closer Smoltz.

by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

WTF??????????????/

I’d rather have Oh for the love of christ that manny to be manny

by jug on May 7, 2008 9:28 PM EDT reply actions

why play the matchups….when you don’t have the personnel

by jug on May 7, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Well it's weird, but honestly.

Saves are overrated and Closers are too. Unless they are elite. So hell use all the pen, just win the game.

by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 9:29 PM EDT reply actions

so its NOT a bobby cox thing. great.

i’m gonna fall off my chair if ring comes in after control freak

by bigjoe on May 7, 2008 9:29 PM EDT reply actions

Nope.

Just Crab. But what the hell is Callix? That’s just nuts.

by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah.

It’s weird. I was watching baseball tonight like three weeks ago. And Callix had a web gem, and nobody would say his name. They said, “and there is this great play from the Padres.” I laughed.

by mvandonsel on May 7, 2008 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

That's pitching Acosta.

5 straight. I like it. Keep it up boys.

by Perrinbar on May 7, 2008 9:33 PM EDT reply actions

Did we

have a 5 game winning streak last season?

by mvandonsel on May 7, 2008 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

we had 3, none longer though.

by bigjoe on May 7, 2008 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

i love beating the tar outta shitty teams. HERES TO A WIN TOMORROW AND 4 STRAIGHT OVER THE PIRATES

by bigjoe on May 7, 2008 9:34 PM EDT reply actions

for as much bitching as we did about huddy and the flyballs, he finished the night with a 13:5 GB-FB ratio. yeah. sometimes we should just shut the hell up

by bigjoe on May 7, 2008 9:38 PM EDT reply actions

Well

More of the problem was he was giving up line drive hits early on, he settled though. I just worry because if he isn’t doing the groundball thing, it’s usually going to be a bad night.

Back from the game

Donning the home white, in celebration of the win. It was funny, when I saw Boyer in the game, I did the OJ Simpson in court cringe, and waited for the worst – I mean if Huddy couldn’t get called strikes, Boyer was downright fucked. But amazingly he got out of it, and here’s the best part:

In between innings, the cameramen did their thing, the usual rotation of showing smoking hot 18-26 blonde girl, child, old person, minority, wash, rinse, repeat, on the big screen. But somewhere in between, they showed Boyer on the big screen in the dugout, with a stat bar saying Blaine Boyer, RP – Leads team with 6 holds, and he put his head down all embarrassed as if he were a halfway decent player or something. What about something like runs/innings pitched ratio, or something like that? I guess a featherweight like Boyer needs all the positive reinforcement he can get; and if it means public praise, whatever, as long as he can keep racking up scoreless innings.
