San Diego Padres at Atlanta Braves, May 6, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
There's nothing like playing one of the worst teams in baseball to help get you back in a division race of your own. The Pads offense has been - how shall I put this - abysmal? Atrocious? Ghastly? We'll go with that. Anyways they have the second fewest runs scored in the NL and the worst AVG and OPS.
The thing is their pitching is still pretty good, the starters at the very least. Their starters ERA is right behind ours at 3.84. Their bullpen ERA is last in the league though so we need to work the count on the starters.
We get Chris Young first but luckily we will miss Peavy in the series so we have a good shot throughout with Hudson and Reyes throwing the next two games. Jurrjens will pitch tonight and we all know he has been at worst solid this season and at best a revelation by angel Gabriel.
Alright people get to chatting I want 500 posts by 9 o'clock.

I'd say so...
... you know Bobby’s philosophy, “Start ‘em as soon as they get here.” I could definitely see Greg Norton in left tonight.

Jurrjens
Tonight he throws his first career complete game shutout.

Picks
1. 30,322
2. Mark Kotsay
3. Chris Young plunks a batter and ends up costing him at least one run.
I wouldn’t underestimate the Padres. Chris Young had a pretty good outing his last time at the Ted, and Khalil Greene is one of the most underrated shortstops in the league. The guy has great range, and a little pop in his bat too. I don’t care if we don’t have to face Peavy or Maddux; we didn’t have to face Santana or Perez in that Mets series, and looked what happened there, injuries, sickness or not. Pitching-wise, we should have beaten them, but we didn’t.

Just got back
Player of the game, as decided by the Ted:
Mark Kotsay.
Score one for the Natural.

Just saw this sexy fact on ESPNEWS:
Jurrjens, ATL: has allowed 7 hits last 20 IP
Thats INSANE. 7 hits over 3 starts? SEVEN HITS?? Dear god.
At this point...
...whatever we get out of Gorkys is pretty much a bonus in regards to that trade.

Especially...
Anyone see Renteria’s two errors last night? If there is ever such thing as a position player affected by what league they’re in, Renteria is a prime example. As much as I like the person he is, Renteria is definitely chipping away at age and wear.
Just realized I can contribute for the quest for 500 comments tonight – going to the game, afterall.

I don’t know if I’ll be around…Not that anyone cares, I just felt the need to mention it.

be around
sometimes i get too angry to post during the games, but i should be around. Nothing like the mid-6th inning meltdown thread going buckwild.
Too angry?
This is the best place to be too angry, cause someone will always say something to make me laugh.
Otherwise I sit in my room and listen to Killswitch Engage, and that doesn’t usually turn out well.

I might..
actually might be in the game thread. But that means I’ll need to fire up the laptop since I’m watching via MLB .tv.. Though we win when I don’t watch, so I may have to listen to Pete and Skip on XM.
Oh who am I kidding...
I’m sure I’ll be here for at least part of the game. Too bad my girlfriend just doesn’t understand the greater joys of Braves baseball and blogging…

picks
1. 18,497
2. Kelly —are we seeing the beginning of a hot streak?
3. Braves win 6 to 3. Jair picks up the W.
picks
Missed the last week or more, but here goes:
1. 19,423
2. Chipper
3. Braves win in extra innings
I remember '95
Picks
1. 21,500
2. Jurrjens
3. Padres fail to score
Mark Kotsay has more homers than Andruw Jones, and more than twice as many hits.
He’s also making half as much money. That worked out pretty well so far.
a card board standee of Andruw at the plate would be more effective offensively than the real Andruw has been this year.
Half as much money
Isn’t most of kotsay’s money being paid by the a’s? – net to the braves is way less than half
pick-o-rama
1. 22,222
2. Chipper
3. Yunel get plunked…(it almost happened on the 2-2 count last game)...btw…not hoping it will happen
I'm pickin...
1. 20,234

2. Chip
3. Braves win first one-run game of the year
Picks
1. 24, 338
2. Chipper
3. Someone in the bullpen gets a save
I had been under the impression
that is was pretty much going to happen the whole time. On the radio they kept saying in very rare situations guys with his problem worked through it without surgery, but that was highly unlikely. It sucks, thats for sure. We need to get Gonzalez back before everything falls apart.
he had a...
...setback of some sort recently. I posted a link in the Moylan fanpost…doesn’t say more than that though.

Well that's
about par for the course. Man we have shit luck on this stuff.
Let's not start poorly.
C’mon JJ, outs are what we need.
That's how to do it.
Get people on base for Chipper.
Yes, let us steal more often.
Possibly when there are fewer than 2 outs.
Well I don't want to be
the first to be unsuccessful against George Muresan out there.

Gant just said the reason the back end of the lineup is doing well...
...is b/c McCann is hitting well with RISP. Besides the fact that that doesn’t make any sense, isn’t McCann doing horribly with RISP?
Yes, yes he is.
He’s hitting .167 with RISP.
Maybe Kotsay can do that.
You know, hitting thing he does.
That a way Mark.
So much better than AJ would have been. Thank heavens.
Great piece of hitting...
...and a great hustle by Kotsay

I've got to say I love Skip Carey
Who is currently explaining how this will be Chip’s last game broadcasting. The apple fell far from that tree.
P.S. He’s just ripping Chip
Last I had heard
he was sent down to the minors and was contemplating retirement. That’s from when we played the Rockies.
If I pitched
I would change my name to Fingers Malone.

a LOT of pitches for jair so far…we can’t let that soft underbelly that is the parade of goons get in the game for more than 3 innings

by contemplating what Wickman eats to get so… fat, I think is the word.

I don't understand how it's even possible.
I mean someone has to tell him he’s playing major leaguers. It’s insane, absolutely insane.
I'm trying to think...

I can’t.

Blasphemy! Chipper Jones should be the entire NL team. He’ll play every position and win.

JJ
i just cant believe how much he’s doing. Schedule-wise, the first three games i watched were pitched by JJ. Already then, i knew there was something up, but c’MON!!!! Is this guy serious? Forget frenchy, we need to lock up this kid long term.
Kotsay.
Man if he stays healthy it will have been a steal.
They are totally walking him.
and maybe a GS for Tex.
Plus that would bust this baby
wide open. We could run Wickman and Kolb out there after that.
i can’t stand him at 2B. Love him in the batters box.

those of us on MLB.TV are a little delayed than all ya’ll….. this is the third time you guys have ruined the play for me!!!
haha, its actually pretty funny, i read “BALK” and think, “What??” and see Young falling off the mound….
He's unfamiliar...
Most everyone in the league has never faced him. Expect him to struggle at some point.

not for real
i just have a hunch, if you look at the contrast between Mac and Frenchy, the way they play, act, speak, etc.., and then see how they both reacted to the contract offer. Frenchy’s kinda a punk already.
you serious? that’s as easy as they come.
by Smoltz's Beard on May 6, 2008 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions
I still have faith...
...that Frenchy will pull through, cause he wants to play for the Braves and his best friend is signed long-term.

What is the significance of BEACH on your fellas sleeves?
Prolly too late, but my picks:
1. 24,311
2. Mark (can we have him back) Kotsay
3. Jimmy baseball will misread a ball in the outfield, strike out swinging and looking and pop up; AGAIN!
"We've... we've got lumps of it 'round the back."
yes
but, thats a tricky play…. i dunno dude, they could go either way, both plays he botched tonight. A great player obviously makes those, and a common player isnt even expected to. I think KJ falls in between, b/c i think he gets those often enough. Damn… triple…. RBI….should’ve stayed with JAIR!!!!!!!
That's fine...
...I happen to think he isn’t quite “in between”, so don’t mind me when I complain.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 6, 2008 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions
i mean, i get it
i understand, but, i just like the guy. He was a part of the baby braves year, he threw someone out at home once in a game he homered, very early in his career, or something like that, and i just like the dude.
haha...
...dude, I love the guy as well. I pimped his offensive abilities more than anyone. Check out the fanpost where someone wanted to platoon him with Prado…I jumped all over the guy.
But I have very little faith in his fielding.

at least those runs are charged to oh for the love of christ and not one of our pitchers who actually knows how to pitch
Why they
gotta make the game interesting, I want to just win. No close crap. Certainly don’t get within 1 run, we’ll lose on principle at that point.

here it is ya'll
lets will them through it…. everyone, concentrate, really really hard, on the fact
that our closer is NOT Dan Kolb….. it will work…. i can feel it…..
It doesn’t make any sense. Why go to Acosta when you clearly don’t trust him? At least let Boyer have a chance at it after he nearly struck out the side in the 8th. If he f’s it up, you still have Acosta, Ring, etc.
I think we can agree that this team doesn’t have a “closer” right now. I know “closer-by-committee” is a dirty phrase, but right now it’s the logical move. If someone’s throwing well, you don’t have to go to someone who is terrible in every other appearance because he’s your “closer” (meaning that he has good stuff but has no idea where it’s going).
