Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Fathers @ Native American Warriors (Also NAHWAL)

San Diego Padres @ Atlanta Braves

There's nothing like playing one of the worst teams in baseball to help get you back in a division race of your own. The Pads offense has been - how shall I put this - abysmal? Atrocious? Ghastly? We'll go with that. Anyways they have the second fewest runs scored in the NL and the worst AVG and OPS.

The thing is their pitching is still pretty good, the starters at the very least. Their starters ERA is right behind ours at 3.84. Their bullpen ERA is last in the league though so we need to work the count on the starters.

We get Chris Young first but luckily we will miss Peavy in the series so we have a good shot throughout with Hudson and Reyes throwing the next two games. Jurrjens will pitch tonight and we all know he has been at worst solid this season and at best a revelation by angel Gabriel.

Alright people get to chatting I want 500 posts by 9 o'clock.

Uh-Oh

Just thought of something – will Norton even be in uniform tonight?

I'd say so...

... you know Bobby’s philosophy, “Start ‘em as soon as they get here.” I could definitely see Greg Norton in left tonight.

Pitching

Young’s ERA isn’t terrible and he’s been playing out west against the likes of the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Colorado Rockies, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, his WHIP is 1.38, which is good for the Braves. With a little clutch hitting tonight we’ll take this first game no problem. Padres have the worst offense in the league.

2008 National League Ranks – Padres
AVG R OBP SLG OPS SB
.230 108 .302 .341 .643 7
16th 15th* 16th 16th 16th 16th

*Giants are 16th w/o Bonds and 106 Runs.

Jurrjens, Hudson, and Reyes will have no problem dealing with the Padres offense. If we can produce some runs against Young and their number 4 and 5 starters (wednesday and thursday’s games), we should be golden and sweep the series.

Picks

1. 30,322
2. Mark Kotsay
3. Chris Young plunks a batter and ends up costing him at least one run.

I wouldn’t underestimate the Padres. Chris Young had a pretty good outing his last time at the Ted, and Khalil Greene is one of the most underrated shortstops in the league. The guy has great range, and a little pop in his bat too. I don’t care if we don’t have to face Peavy or Maddux; we didn’t have to face Santana or Perez in that Mets series, and looked what happened there, injuries, sickness or not. Pitching-wise, we should have beaten them, but we didn’t.

Especially...

Anyone see Renteria’s two errors last night? If there is ever such thing as a position player affected by what league they’re in, Renteria is a prime example. As much as I like the person he is, Renteria is definitely chipping away at age and wear.

Just realized I can contribute for the quest for 500 comments tonight – going to the game, afterall.

This is the best place to be too angry, cause someone will always say something to make me laugh.

Otherwise I sit in my room and listen to Killswitch Engage, and that doesn’t usually turn out well.

Mark Kotsay has more homers than Andruw Jones, and more than twice as many hits.

He’s also making half as much money. That worked out pretty well so far.

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 4:33 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

a card board standee of Andruw at the plate would be more effective offensively than the real Andruw has been this year.

by yondaime4 on May 6, 2008 4:52 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It would take a LOT of cardboard

by VegasAces on May 6, 2008 4:53 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Moylan

Braves Live just said Moylan will need TJ surgery and its already scheduled.

by jug on May 6, 2008 6:40 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I had been under the impression

that is was pretty much going to happen the whole time. On the radio they kept saying in very rare situations guys with his problem worked through it without surgery, but that was highly unlikely. It sucks, thats for sure. We need to get Gonzalez back before everything falls apart.

Nope

JJ

Is in a groove. 62 pitches through 4 and 5 Ks. He’s so saving our bacon this year.

by Perrinbar on May 6, 2008 8:18 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 8:21 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

JJ

i just cant believe how much he’s doing. Schedule-wise, the first three games i watched were pitched by JJ. Already then, i knew there was something up, but c’MON!!!! Is this guy serious? Forget frenchy, we need to lock up this kid long term.

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 8:21 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

thats DEFINITELY what he needs right now.

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 8:30 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

just not tom glavine. that was almost a catastrophe on sunday

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 8:36 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i can’t stand him at 2B. Love him in the batters box.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 6, 2008 8:36 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i love KJ to death too, but there was something really unnerving about his profile photo from last year. he looked mentally retarded

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 8:37 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah

sometimes he looks a little criminal too…..

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 8:46 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i swear to christ, i’d better not see a picture of kelly johnson on deadspin this year.

those of us on MLB.TV are a little delayed than all ya’ll….. this is the third time you guys have ruined the play for me!!!

haha, its actually pretty funny, i read “BALK” and think, “What??” and see Young falling off the mound….

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 8:37 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

hahaha, me too. i’m sitting there like “come on tex…wait, why am i cheering you, i know you didn’t do a thing…”

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 8:38 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Don’t do anything stupid.

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 8:49 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

blanco can do that

frenchy, you cant. Not when you’re trying to get a huge contract with Boras.

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 8:51 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

frenchy signed with boras? well that takes care of that hometown discount.

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 8:52 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

frenchy signed w/ boras?

by Smoltz's Beard on May 6, 2008 8:52 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

not for real

i just have a hunch, if you look at the contrast between Mac and Frenchy, the way they play, act, speak, etc.., and then see how they both reacted to the contract offer. Frenchy’s kinda a punk already.

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 8:54 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

boras is a shark

he’ll swoop in for Frenchy when he sees Tex.

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 8:55 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

maybe when francoeur can break a .350 OBP, he can get a nice contract. oh, and a .500 SLG too

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 8:56 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

KJ

still sweating him? chill out

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 8:56 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

you serious? that’s as easy as they come.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 6, 2008 8:57 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I still have faith...

...that Frenchy will pull through, cause he wants to play for the Braves and his best friend is signed long-term.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 6, 2008 8:56 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i hope so

i really do. I hope you’re right.

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 8:57 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i’d rather have justin upton. or BJ upton. any upton would suffice.

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 8:58 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

you know seton-hall d-backs fan is going to see that and come say something.

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:04 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

his first start in ATL a bunch of fans dressed up in scrubs and had a sign that said “Jurrjens’s Surgeons”

by Smoltz's Beard on May 6, 2008 9:04 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

oh yeah

i remember, jurrjens surgeons…. thats dope.

Serial Killer is cool too, for Kotsay, right? I dont get it, but its a cool name for anyone

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 9:05 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

look at his ESPN profile picture, then compare it to your average run of the mill mugshot.

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:06 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

by Smoltz's Beard on May 6, 2008 9:02 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:03 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

same....

...too bad its my most important one. At least that’s the league I have JJ in.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 6, 2008 9:05 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

in my “good” league, i got BANNY AND BIG Z tearing things up for me.

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:06 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ahh they pulled

the BFG? Too bad. At least their pen is terrible too.

by Perrinbar on May 6, 2008 9:03 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

holy god, you’re right. TOTAL tool

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:09 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

how about…THE GARDEN RAKE?

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:10 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

maybe

i feel like we might have more options to take the nickname further with snake rather than rake

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 9:12 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

rake. a rake is a tool. greg norton is a tool. thus, garden rake.

plus, with garden snake…yeah, things might get a little dicey.

i was going through a bunch of other tool names…how about the JIGSAW? or the BELT SANDER? work with me people.

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:13 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Cross Pein Pin Hammer?

by Smoltz's Beard on May 6, 2008 9:13 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

or we could channel jim norton and just call him “fucking cunt”

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:15 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

the dude from lucky louie?

by Smoltz's Beard on May 6, 2008 9:16 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:06 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah, i was gonna say. he impressed me more than frenchy has tonight

Visiting from GLB...

What is the significance of BEACH on your fellas sleeves?

Prolly too late, but my picks:
1. 24,311
2. Mark (can we have him back) Kotsay
3. Jimmy baseball will misread a ball in the outfield, strike out swinging and looking and pop up; AGAIN!

"We've... we've got lumps of it 'round the back."

by ABY on May 6, 2008 9:10 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

jim beautchamp, one of our longtime coaches who died this offseason

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:11 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

so, no tool?

what could his name be…..

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 9:10 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yes

but, thats a tricky play…. i dunno dude, they could go either way, both plays he botched tonight. A great player obviously makes those, and a common player isnt even expected to. I think KJ falls in between, b/c i think he gets those often enough. Damn… triple…. RBI….should’ve stayed with JAIR!!!!!!!

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 9:17 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's fine...

...I happen to think he isn’t quite “in between”, so don’t mind me when I complain.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 6, 2008 9:18 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i’d prefer not to have another tommy john surgery, thanks

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:19 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You mean it wasn’t a good idea to pitch Moylan 90+ innings last year?

by Smoltz's Beard on May 6, 2008 9:20 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

or soriano over 70, but what the hell do i know, i’m a 21 year old community college student

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:21 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i mean, i get it

i understand, but, i just like the guy. He was a part of the baby braves year, he threw someone out at home once in a game he homered, very early in his career, or something like that, and i just like the dude.

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 9:21 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

haha...

...dude, I love the guy as well. I pimped his offensive abilities more than anyone. Check out the fanpost where someone wanted to platoon him with Prado…I jumped all over the guy.

But I have very little faith in his fielding.

this is gonna get bad when we play the cardinals

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:20 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why they

gotta make the game interesting, I want to just win. No close crap. Certainly don’t get within 1 run, we’ll lose on principle at that point.
