Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

Fathers @ Native American Warriors (Also NAHWAL)

San Diego Padres at Atlanta Braves, May 6, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

There's nothing like playing one of the worst teams in baseball to help get you back in a division race of your own. The Pads offense has been - how shall I put this - abysmal? Atrocious? Ghastly? We'll go with that. Anyways they have the second fewest runs scored in the NL and the worst AVG and OPS.

The thing is their pitching is still pretty good, the starters at the very least. Their starters ERA is right behind ours at 3.84. Their bullpen ERA is last in the league though so we need to work the count on the starters.

We get Chris Young first but luckily we will miss Peavy in the series so we have a good shot throughout with Hudson and Reyes throwing the next two games. Jurrjens will pitch tonight and we all know he has been at worst solid this season and at best a revelation by angel Gabriel.

Alright people get to chatting I want 500 posts by 9 o'clock.

Uh-Oh

Just thought of something – will Norton even be in uniform tonight?

I'd say so...

... you know Bobby’s philosophy, “Start ‘em as soon as they get here.” I could definitely see Greg Norton in left tonight.

3. Chris Young plunks a batter and ends up costing him at least one run.

I wouldn’t underestimate the Padres. Chris Young had a pretty good outing his last time at the Ted, and Khalil Greene is one of the most underrated shortstops in the league. The guy has great range, and a little pop in his bat too. I don’t care if we don’t have to face Peavy or Maddux; we didn’t have to face Santana or Perez in that Mets series, and looked what happened there, injuries, sickness or not. Pitching-wise, we should have beaten them, but we didn’t.

At this point...

by Smoltz's Beard on May 6, 2008 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Especially...

Anyone see Renteria’s two errors last night? If there is ever such thing as a position player affected by what league they’re in, Renteria is a prime example. As much as I like the person he is, Renteria is definitely chipping away at age and wear.

Just realized I can contribute for the quest for 500 comments tonight – going to the game, afterall.

Too angry?

This is the best place to be too angry, cause someone will always say something to make me laugh.

Otherwise I sit in my room and listen to Killswitch Engage, and that doesn’t usually turn out well.

actually might be in the game thread. But that means I’ll need to fire up the laptop since I’m watching via MLB .tv.. Though we win when I don’t watch, so I may have to listen to Pete and Skip on XM.

by yondaime4 on May 6, 2008 4:29 PM EDT reply actions

Mark Kotsay has more homers than Andruw Jones, and more than twice as many hits.

He’s also making half as much money. That worked out pretty well so far.

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 4:33 PM EDT reply actions

a card board standee of Andruw at the plate would be more effective offensively than the real Andruw has been this year.

by yondaime4 on May 6, 2008 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

It would take a LOT of cardboard

I had been under the impression

that is was pretty much going to happen the whole time. On the radio they kept saying in very rare situations guys with his problem worked through it without surgery, but that was highly unlikely. It sucks, thats for sure. We need to get Gonzalez back before everything falls apart.

3 hits for brian giles? what is this, 2002?

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 8:35 PM EDT reply actions

stop commenting!!

those of us on MLB.TV are a little delayed than all ya’ll….. this is the third time you guys have ruined the play for me!!!

haha, its actually pretty funny, i read “BALK” and think, “What??” and see Young falling off the mound….

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 8:37 PM EDT reply actions

hahaha, me too. i’m sitting there like “come on tex…wait, why am i cheering you, i know you didn’t do a thing…”

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

haha

seriously. Then again, it was Tex, so you knew beforehand he wouldnt do anything.

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

C'mon JJ.

Don’t do anything stupid.

Most everyone in the league has never faced him. Expect him to struggle at some point.

kots

i used to pick him to click every night….

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 8:49 PM EDT reply actions

blanco can do that

frenchy, you cant. Not when you’re trying to get a huge contract with Boras.

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 8:51 PM EDT reply actions

frenchy signed with boras? well that takes care of that hometown discount.

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

frenchy signed w/ boras?

by Smoltz's Beard on May 6, 2008 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

not for real

i just have a hunch, if you look at the contrast between Mac and Frenchy, the way they play, act, speak, etc.., and then see how they both reacted to the contract offer. Frenchy’s kinda a punk already.

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 8:54 PM EDT reply actions

boras is a shark

he’ll swoop in for Frenchy when he sees Tex.

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 8:55 PM EDT reply actions

maybe when francoeur can break a .350 OBP, he can get a nice contract. oh, and a .500 SLG too

i feel like we might have more options to take the nickname further with snake rather than rake

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

rake. a rake is a tool. greg norton is a tool. thus, garden rake.

plus, with garden snake…yeah, things might get a little dicey.

i was going through a bunch of other tool names…how about the JIGSAW? or the BELT SANDER? work with me people.

2. Mark (can we have him back) Kotsay
3. Jimmy baseball will misread a ball in the outfield, strike out swinging and looking and pop up; AGAIN!

what could his name be…..

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 9:10 PM EDT reply actions

yes

but, thats a tricky play…. i dunno dude, they could go either way, both plays he botched tonight. A great player obviously makes those, and a common player isnt even expected to. I think KJ falls in between, b/c i think he gets those often enough. Damn… triple…. RBI….should’ve stayed with JAIR!!!!!!!

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions

That's fine...

...I happen to think he isn’t quite “in between”, so don’t mind me when I complain.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 6, 2008 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

or soriano over 70, but what the hell do i know, i’m a 21 year old community college student

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

i mean, i get it

i understand, but, i just like the guy. He was a part of the baby braves year, he threw someone out at home once in a game he homered, very early in his career, or something like that, and i just like the dude.

by traphicg on May 6, 2008 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

haha...

...dude, I love the guy as well. I pimped his offensive abilities more than anyone. Check out the fanpost where someone wanted to platoon him with Prado…I jumped all over the guy.

But I have very little faith in his fielding.

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

gotta make the game interesting, I want to just win. No close crap. Certainly don’t get within 1 run, we’ll lose on principle at that point.

acosta will have a line of something along the lines of 1 IP 0 H, 8 BB, 2 K tonight

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:40 PM EDT reply actions

more walks than Ks too. never a good thing. WHIP of over 1 and a half. yuck. a 1-2-3 here would help here

alright, NOW acosta’s got more hits than walks. ARE YOU HAPPY NOW?

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:46 PM EDT reply actions

HE’S PLAYING THE MATCHUP GAME IN THE NINTH FUCKING INNING

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:47 PM EDT reply actions

Choice?

Acosta could not/did not get it done.

by jug on May 6, 2008 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

i think we should just make resop the closer until one of THE DYNAMIC THREE comes off the DL. why? BECAUSE IT WOULD AMUSE ME

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I know I was busting Dusty Baker earlier for his use of relievers, but Bobby really dropped the ball. Why pull Boyer? Was he too dominating? When you never know what you’re going to get from your pen, why not use the guy who was really really good as long as he hadn’t thrown too many pitches?

by zwillis on May 6, 2008 9:49 PM EDT reply actions

that has BETTER not be resop jogging in

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:52 PM EDT reply actions

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:54 PM EDT reply actions

stick with your good relievers

by zwillis on May 6, 2008 9:55 PM EDT reply actions

oh thank you jesus. a three pitcher save. un fucking real.

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:55 PM EDT reply actions

just a heads up for anyone still wanting to watch baseball: gavin floyd has a no hitter through 7 in chicago, and HE’S ALLOWED A RUN. awesome

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:56 PM EDT reply actions

It doesn’t make any sense. Why go to Acosta when you clearly don’t trust him? At least let Boyer have a chance at it after he nearly struck out the side in the 8th. If he f’s it up, you still have Acosta, Ring, etc.

by zwillis on May 6, 2008 9:57 PM EDT reply actions

i think bobby learned his lesson from last week when he kept acosta in for the save and he utterly fucked shit up

by bigjoe on May 6, 2008 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I think we can agree that this team doesn’t have a “closer” right now. I know “closer-by-committee” is a dirty phrase, but right now it’s the logical move. If someone’s throwing well, you don’t have to go to someone who is terrible in every other appearance because he’s your “closer” (meaning that he has good stuff but has no idea where it’s going).

by zwillis on May 6, 2008 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

i also think you can’t go “hey, you pitched a good 8th. YOU’RE STAYING IN FOR 2” some of these guys aren’t bred to go 2 innings, and i think boyer is one of them

NAHWAL Results

I must say I really enjoyed reading over everyone’s comments this morning—I blurted out in hysterical laughter several times.

Attendance for the game was 21,657. With a guess of 21,500, mycr0ft gets one point.

The picks to click were the Surgeon, the All-Star, and holy crap how much better is Mark Kotsay than Andruw Jones right now! Once point each to:

ghost of tom thobe
royhobbs
bigjoe
Perrinbar
sdp
Smoltz’s Beard
brndn
chance13ga
dannycco
mycr0ft
jc25
OntheGo
rearnold
RainDelay
hbkbraves
Murphy03

AAB picks, one point each to:

jug
sdp
hbkbraves

And bigjoe gets one extra point for having the most comments at 98…. mmm, secret bonus NAHWAL points, didn’t see that coming…

Think the comment of the night was either...

...”frenchy. you fuck” for it’s simple nature or “LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOR” b/c, come on, who doesn’t like a good Drowning Pool reference?

Well played, bigjoe. /golfclap

Doesn’t mean that we can’t celebrate. Look, it’s like Andy Warhol painting!

Going to tomorrow’s game as well. Hopefully will have reason to post this again tomorrow night.
