Braves @ Reds: One-Run Appocolypse

Atlanta Braves at Cincinnati Reds, May 31, 2008 3:55 PM EDT

It's rather maddening how this one-run crap continues. It is someone new every night who doesn't seem to be coming through in key situations and far too often it's more than one player. Our team batting average at home is the second best in baseball at .307, but our team batting average on the road is a measly .248 -- in the bottom third of all teams in baseball.

Next Game

Elizabeth City St. Vikings

Great American Ball Park

Jair Jurrjens vs Josh Fogg

Partly cloudy. Winds blowing out to left field at 10-20 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 80.

weird... and funny

I have no idea why the Braves are being referred to as the Elizabeth City St. Vikings, it’s some sort of bug in the system. Though on some level it may be appropriate.

Yesterday we were trying to figure out how to spot Jug at the game...

so, in addition to the hilarious video Beard just offered up in the last game’s thread (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcKeDPG_lMQ), here’s another way to possibly identify our friend Jug (he said he might throw beer and pizza) at today’s funfest:
Jug???

(all in fun, dude, hope you don’t mind :)

This team doesn’t have the heart to overcome a three-run deficit.

haha

I concur…sometimes at the Ted I hang out in the concession area and watch the game so I can hear the radio announcers too.

by Lizziebeth on May 31, 2008 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well because I am in Cali I get the Dodgers vs. Mets game.

I can only listen on the radio today. I am pissed at Fox, I pay all of this money for the games through cable and I can’t watch shit on Saturdays.

Plus a triple from JJ.

That’s helping your own cause!

by Perrinbar on May 31, 2008 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i thought you said triple play at first, and i almost died. but he’s proven to be a semi-capable bat, so thats always a bright spot

by bigjoe on May 31, 2008 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Plus they always say on the radio.

That Bobby thinks he’s the fastest on the team.

gotta be the last inning, maybe the last batter, for JJ

by bigjoe on May 31, 2008 5:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah.

Although if that was a semi-intentional walk, Bobby might be planning on finishing the inning with him. Might have been to give the pen more time.

What was wrong with Jurrjens today?

by Smoltz's Beard on May 31, 2008 5:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He settled down better than I thought he would.

Yunel

is the goat of the day so far…

by sddbaker on May 31, 2008 6:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

he must be moved from

the 1 spot. Immediately.

by Perrinbar on May 31, 2008 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

put KJ back in there?

by Smoltz's Beard on May 31, 2008 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

maybe?

All I know is Yunel is much, much better batting 2nd than 1st.

by Perrinbar on May 31, 2008 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

actually.

KJ is better deeper in the lineup. So, Blanco is probably the way to go. or Kotsay.

by Perrinbar on May 31, 2008 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’d like Blanco up there. Takes alot of walks, and has speed to boot.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 31, 2008 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Huh...

...check out Yunel’s career splits:

Batting 1st (243 PAs): .326/.373/.439 – .812 OPS
Batting 2nd (220PAs): .312/.377/.432 – .809 OPS

Who knew?

by Smoltz's Beard on May 31, 2008 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

has he ever batted deeper in the order?

by bigjoe on May 31, 2008 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He’s had 83 PAs in the 8th spot. Not much else.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 31, 2008 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This year though.

Not so much. If he could recapture whatever it was he had last year, then leave him in.

by Perrinbar on May 31, 2008 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

very true…his OPS in the leadoff spot this year is .644

by Smoltz's Beard on May 31, 2008 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Jeff Bennett...

hasn’t his arm fallen off yet?

by sddbaker on May 31, 2008 6:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

by Lizziebeth on May 31, 2008 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess

Heap was soooo mad that Bobby thought he had made the tag. On the replay you can see the runner was safe, but Heap was yelling so much, Bobby came out to back him up. Plus they said he was just plain pissed at the calls throughout the game.
Oh, was that a rhetorical question?
