Braves @ Reds: A Better Start to this Series would be Appreciated

Atlanta Braves at Cincinnati Reds, May 30, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

I've gotta tell you, I'm a bit excited to see all these young players that the Reds have this year; that starts with tonight's starting pitcher Edinson Volquez. Who would have thought that the Reds would have the best pitcher in the National League... and it's almost June. Volquez has been owning the league this year with a 1.31 ERA; this, after not putting up anything better than a 4.50 ERA in his three previous partial major league seasons.

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2008 - Edinson Volquez 7-2 11 10 0 0 0 0 62.0 42 13 9 3 33 76 1.31 1.21

He'll be facing Tom Glavine, who is beginning to look at little shaky... especially the third time through a lineup.

2008 - Tom Glavine 2-2 9 9 0 0 0 0 45.1 43 25 24 7 25 24 4.76 1.50

I'm also excited to see these young sluggers for Cincinnati. Joey Votto and Jay Bruce, not to mention the always entertaining Adam Dunn. It should be a fun series, and while I hope to see some offensive fireworks, I do hope that the Braves end up on the winning side of these games; if for no other reason than we need road confidence.

only good thing about this is that SK hasn’t played for a few days so it can go retroactively.

pretty sad when GREGOR has the highest OPS in the starting OF today.

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I was looking at that myself. Francoeur is slipping into the dangerous realm of a sub-.700 OPS, which is certainly benching material. Shall we take a look at some of his split so far this year (OPS wise)?

LH – .717
RH – .713

Home – .749
Away – .676

Day – .886
Night – .614

Those do not bode well for tonights away night game against a RH.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 30, 2008 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

BUT HE’S GOT GOLD GLOVE DEFENSE! HE SAVES APPROXIMATELY 37 RUNS A GAME WITH THAT RIFLE OF AN ARM!!!

oh wait, we only have 3 OF on the roster? shiiiiiiiiiit

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions

So…now that Kotsay is on the DL, when do people start to get bitter about the trade?

by Smoltz's Beard on May 30, 2008 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

w00t

I’ll be at the game. Look for me behind Francoeur!!

Need someone to post victory cigars!

by jug on May 30, 2008 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

i’ll give you a dollar if he attempts to rob a homer and you throw a beer on him

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

that ought to be a top-ten

If Manny’s high-five assist got weeks of air time, i’m sure a beer-dump on an FYF botched HR rob would for SURE make the SportsCenter top ten.

by traphicg on May 30, 2008 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions

haha, got that would be classic. seeing jug escorted out of the game by police officers would be the icing on the cake.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 30, 2008 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Hope I get home in time to see that!

by Lizziebeth on May 30, 2008 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Jug, you must identify yourself

Maybe wear a shirt with huge black letters that say “JUG” so we know its you and not another FYF hater.

by traphicg on May 30, 2008 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

DAYTON MOORE STRIKES AGAIN!!!!! good luck brayan, you will be missed.

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Damn…that sucks. I always liked him.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 30, 2008 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Dang, I was hoping that they would at least work out a trade for a minor leaguer before the deadline was up, but it appears we got nothing in return.

Has anyone claimed Resop?

Decent analysis of our team at the 1/3 mark by a nonbiased (despite the blog title) commentator.

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 4:57 PM EDT reply actions

Thanks for the link. I think that site sees what alot of us see…that we do have the pieces to win, and win often. The reason we all get so bitter after a loss, especially a 1-run loss, is because there have not been many times this season where we have been completely blown out. We should have a better record than we do, and it’s frustrating as hell to lose 2 games to the Brewers that in all honesty we should have won. Dave Bush? Jeff Suppan? Give me a break.

With that being said, when in fuck is Hampton supposed to attempt to pitch again?

by Smoltz's Beard on May 30, 2008 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

dude, has he even attempted to start a rehab? i haven’t heard A WORD about him

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

why should he bother…and why should we care at this point…

by Lizziebeth on May 30, 2008 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

i have this SNEAKING suspicion that tonight, THE PHENOM’S ERA jumps above 2

by clemsonfan on May 30, 2008 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions

that makes 2 of us. molson now puts little choice questions on their bottles, so i’m entertained. also got a free t-shirt from the case. GOOD TIMES!!!

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Must be nice...

This shit hole I live in, you cant hardly find anything worth drinking…moving to the Research Triangle in the next week though!!!

by clemsonfan on May 30, 2008 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions

i’m actually surprised, Bobby usually gets his callups in there right away. Well, not counting Stockman.

by 10-4 on May 30, 2008 6:50 PM EDT reply actions

the stockman situation still baffles me. he’s been up like a week and a half, and has only gotten in somewhere in the neighborhood of 4 games. and its not like our starters have gone deep, last series not withstanding

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

...Reds announcers are wearing leis. i don’t know what i’m getting myself into…

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:03 PM EDT reply actions

hahaha

Im so thankful for both feeds!!

by clemsonfan on May 30, 2008 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

come on boys. we beat volquez once, we can do it again. he’s nothing special. HOOAH!!!

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:07 PM EDT reply actions

i’d say even money, leaning towards the over

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions

its looking like its just gonna be me & you tonight. CULLEN HARPER IS THE TRUTH. that is all

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

No doubt!

Willy Korn is gonna be a monster too though!!!

by clemsonfan on May 30, 2008 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

my one buddy who’s a UF fan was telling me that spiller was about to transfer there. that would have CRIPPLED YOU.

seriously, only thing that can come CLOSE to baseball…college football. can’t get enough in the fall

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with that completly!! He did almost leave to be close to his kid but THANK GOD he didnt!! We should be very solid this year if the O-line comes around….all our Offensive studs are returning and we had a top 10 recruiting class!!

by clemsonfan on May 30, 2008 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

i mostly watch the big ten, being a PSU student and a NU fan…but yeah, southern football is so fun. since NU is so bad every year, i try to watch as many teams as possible, and i usually end up gambling too…clemson is always real fun to watch

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow

he wanted to call that a strike!

by clemsonfan on May 30, 2008 7:14 PM EDT reply actions

mildly pissed the reds announcers couldn’t namedrop DELAND FLORIDA

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:18 PM EDT reply actions

not a great start.

Although at least they made him work for it. They not being Yunel of course.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 7:18 PM EDT reply actions

wtf, elle dub strikes out. at least we worked the count.

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:18 PM EDT reply actions

did brantley just call our bullpen a weakness? uhhhh ok

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:22 PM EDT reply actions

C'mon tommy.

You’ve seen how bad it is on the road, you have to pitch perfectly.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 7:23 PM EDT reply actions

and ti begins. tommy just DOES NOT HAVE IT anymore.

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:23 PM EDT reply actions

i may need to be drunker quicker. COME ON GRIFFEY, TRIPLE PLAY!!!

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:25 PM EDT reply actions

Volquez needs to bend his hat a little bit. That “fresh out of the box” look aint doing it for me

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:32 PM EDT reply actions

good patience heap

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:33 PM EDT reply actions

Their giving Frenchy hell on SS

by clemsonfan on May 30, 2008 7:34 PM EDT reply actions

They cant believe...

Norton is playing over Anderson either

by clemsonfan on May 30, 2008 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Or he could.

lose track of the strike zone. I’ll take that.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 7:34 PM EDT reply actions

WAIT WAIT WAIT. frenchy has 4 pitch, non-intentional walks ON BACK TO BACK DAYS??

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:35 PM EDT reply actions

fuck, i thought nortony had that one

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:37 PM EDT reply actions

Hell if they pitch around him.

It’s yet more pitches. Although I suppose Dusty will leave Volquez in there to hit 200 pitches.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 7:37 PM EDT reply actions

if tommy won’t get those calls, we’re in trouble

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:39 PM EDT reply actions

no runs, but he threw A LOT of pitches

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:40 PM EDT reply actions

Runs or not..

were definantly getting his pitch count up!!

by clemsonfan on May 30, 2008 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

39 through 2. GOOD TIMES

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Like I said above though, Dusty will leave him in there for 200.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

if only the reds entire lineup swung like adam dunn

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:43 PM EDT reply actions

“over half his pitches have been outside the strike zone”

by clemsonfan on May 30, 2008 7:55 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah.

That’s good for us. Especially with mr. Patience himself batting now.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions

that i did not expect. that IS his 6th of the year though

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 7:58 PM EDT reply actions

that looked like a gapper from the way they angled it. fucking reds

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:07 PM EDT reply actions

Heap!

Way to break an 0 for 9 stretch.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 8:08 PM EDT reply actions

there we go heap. COME ON…frenchy!? fuck

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:09 PM EDT reply actions

have any of you ever said “good cut” to a hitter more than frenchy?

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:09 PM EDT reply actions

Ummmm...sure?

He has a deep voice. If you are watching the reds’ feed he was wrapped up in a towel earlier.

by mvandonsel on May 30, 2008 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

he works for ESPN on the side, no way can he be drunk! seriously, thats his normal voice.

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Hahaha....

These guys aren’t bad. They are waaaaaaayyyy better than the Brewers announcers.

by mvandonsel on May 30, 2008 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Well.

Lots of pitches again at least?

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 8:11 PM EDT reply actions

thats what i take away from it. COME ON…norton? shit

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Just like to point out that

the fact we are starting Norton in our outfield is scary. Very scary.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions

reds trivia: 3 braves to hit over .350. only guy i’ve got so far is medwick.

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:13 PM EDT reply actions

and henry louis aaron, one of my original guesses that i apparently missed.

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

If you want to include every Braves’ city, Hugh Duffy hit .440 for the 1894 Boston Beaneaters.

by musicman on May 30, 2008 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

i’d assume they’re doing the modern era. but i wasn’t paying much attention so yeah

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:19 PM EDT reply actions

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:20 PM EDT reply actions

Fans of the game...

anyone know what Jug looks like???

by clemsonfan on May 30, 2008 8:22 PM EDT reply actions

look for someone in right field. shame we can’t smell through the TV, cuz the odor of douchebag would just PENETRATE THE SCREEN.

just ribbin, jug

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

haha

only 2 choices…a guy with a blonde or a big guy

by clemsonfan on May 30, 2008 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

at my last job, there was this old black guy that came in that we called mushmouth. couldn’t understand a word he said

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Well Tommy

knows how to work pitches. That’s for sure.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 8:25 PM EDT reply actions

C'mon.

Let’s at least chase him after 6 or during the 6th.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 8:27 PM EDT reply actions

85/48 through 5. i think the 6th is his last.

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:30 PM EDT reply actions

TOMMY PULLING THE STRING?~??! he remembers how to do that???

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:35 PM EDT reply actions

The Phillies

are destroying the Marlins right now. Not sure how I want that series to go, not a sweep I suppose.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 8:38 PM EDT reply actions

Chip will get a hit now.

With a guy on first. He always does.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

Chip will get a hit now.

With a guy on first. He always does.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

yeah.

That’s why it didn’t happen. Also I’m not paying enough attention.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

well

a productive out I guess? Chip is giving Chipper all kinds of praise, but honestly Chipper needs to do more than just move the runner over. He’s our best hitter.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarry…laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarry

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

alright, moves the runner. flyball scores the runner. COME ON TEX!!!

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:41 PM EDT reply actions

Well.

Is one run enough? Maybe…?

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 8:41 PM EDT reply actions

On the other plus side.

Volquez is going to hit 100 pitches. right….now!

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 8:44 PM EDT reply actions

I’m picturing a little Varsity Blues cookout moment between the 2 dads going on with Mac and FYF’s dads. McCann is of course Lance Harbor, and Frenchy is Jonathan Moxen.

by 10-4 on May 30, 2008 8:45 PM EDT reply actions

jerry hairston? SRSLY?

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:48 PM EDT reply actions

HOW WAS THAT NOT A STRIKE???

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:50 PM EDT reply actions

How many times has that happened this year? A borderline pitch not called, next pitch or soon after, a base hit, HR, etc.

by frozen rope on May 30, 2008 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

fucking shit. jay bruce is a douchebag.

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:51 PM EDT reply actions

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:55 PM EDT reply actions

really.

for 2 runs? How about our hitters?

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions

its not like we raised the ERA of the best pitcher in the league or anything

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah.

Well let’s see how it goes from here on out. Because if we hold them at 2 but can’t score any more. Then I fail to see how you can blame him.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

this is no less than the 4th time tonight my feed has froze and i’m pretty sure i’m about 5 minutes behind the regular broadcast run. next year, i gotta get the TV package

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 9:02 PM EDT reply actions

If he pulls him...

I don’t understand why he would have sent him out at all. That’s dumb, why let him give up another hit when he was already at 100 pitches?

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 9:02 PM EDT reply actions

lefty righty matchup. But if he bunts, again that’s a dumb move.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 9:06 PM EDT reply actions

So

many stupid double plays. What the fuck?!

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 9:06 PM EDT reply actions

missed that whole half inning, but heard we tied it. help anyone?

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 9:08 PM EDT reply actions

Norton

doubled, Infante came in for blanco, singled norton to third. Gotay hit into a DP Norton scored, Yunel lined out.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Bobby leave Ohman in with a righty. He loves his matchups.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 9:16 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah.

I’m not complaining, just surprised. It’s quite the good thing, shouldn’t just knee-jerk go to the matchups.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

We need to get ahead

ASAP. Especially with Soriano back, we can actually hold a lead, hopefully.

by Perrinbar on May 30, 2008 9:30 PM EDT reply actions

YEAH MANNty!!!!!! can’t WAIT to see him in the 6th inning

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 9:37 PM EDT reply actions

swings at ball 4. should i have expected more? good work frenchy, keep asking for that $10 mill contract

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 9:43 PM EDT reply actions

by frozen rope on May 30, 2008 9:43 PM EDT reply actions

by frozen rope on May 30, 2008 9:44 PM EDT reply actions

i’ll bet anyone 5 bucks acosta stays in for the 9th and blows it.

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 9:44 PM EDT reply actions

by frozen rope on May 30, 2008 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

lets go, PERFECT time for our FIRST extra inning win. COME ON GUYS, MAN UP!

good performance by acosta still makes me nervous, but i’m less nervous than i am for wonky honky…which is a plus

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 9:51 PM EDT reply actions

how was THAT not a strike? right down the middle. wow.

by bigjoe on May 30, 2008 9:55 PM EDT reply actions

by sddbaker on May 30, 2008 10:21 PM EDT reply actions

Well,

everyone has a bad night now and then, and I would say 0 for 5, with two Vidros and two balls practically through your legs qualifies as a bad night.

Welp

No beer on Frenchy’s head last night. Sorry to disappoint.

Guess we left the offense in Atlanta, as usual. But that Volquez kid is pretty good, so is Bruce.

Nothing really exceptional to report from the game. I was only heckled by cute girls, as one told me after the game “In your face,” and another group of pretty inebriated girls outside of the game mocked me with a “Go Braves!” then “who won?” and after I said the Reds, they replied “go back to Atlanta!” Indeed, I thought, I wish we would.

Another 1 run road loss, experienced first hand by yours truly. Great.

Here’s hoping today goes better. I’ll be there again! Not sure where my seats are this time.

Well...

...although a little part of me dies every time we lose a 1-run road game, of the three games this series that I expected to lose this was the one. It just sucks a big one that we wasted another good performance from Glavine. The bullpen pitched well, again, aside from Ring but Bobby should realize that Ring does not have it in him to pitch to more than one batter. Ohman was used already, and the Reds are an extreme LH hitting team, so I get it…but it’s pretty obious that Ring is gone if and when Gonzalez comes back healthy.

I’ve got faith in JJ and Hud, and as long as we win the series I’ll be happy.

I hear ya

Although I’m not sure why we shouldn’t expect to sweep the last place Reds. But Volquez is very good and we TOTALLY SUCK on the road. I didn’t tune in until the 7th and thought we might pull it out but after the second time through the order with no spark (except Yunel) I knew it was another destined one run loss. Sighhhhh…

Oh well, let’s get ‘em today.

Heading out for the game

Need victory cigar posters.

No NAHWAL, but I’m making predictions: Chipper 3-4 with 1 HR. Griffey hits 599. JJ goes 5.2 for the W.

I’ll pour beer on somebody if I can…Or maybe just throw a slice of pizza.

Dammit...

...trying to embed the stupid video but I can’t get it to work. Just click the link and laugh.

I’ll post it in the new thread. Still not as funny as that video!
