Reds @ Braves Game Thread and NAHWAL
Cincinnati Reds at Atlanta Braves, May 3, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
For the first time this baseball season I have a weekend off and I will be spending it watching the Rome Braves take on the August Greenjackets. Should be interesting with two of the top hitting prospects in the lower minors (Angel Villanlona and Jason Heyward) going head to head.
Anyways the Braves will toss rookie Jo-Jo Reyes onto the hill against former Braves great Matt Belisle (pronounces Be-liz-el in my head). If you hadn't picked up on it through various comments and what not, I like Reyes and I have liked him since last season. His most glaring weakness was the walk and so far this season in Richmond he has only issued 8 in 23IP. That is much more controlled compared to last season. As long as he doesn't let his nerves get to him and he pitches the way that got him here he should be fine.
The offense should get a rebound day against Belisle (Be-liz-el), though now that I say that he will most likely two hit us. We shall see.
I will make my best attempt to take some pictures at the game tomorrow night and use them in a customary 3-day minor league wrap up post.

Going to the game tonight. It’s currently rainy in Atlanta—hoping it doesn’t get rained out.

I know he’s been tearing up Triple A, but I just have this gut feeling Jo-Jo has lulled us into a false since of security. He had success in the minors last year, and it just didn’t translate. Honestly, I hope my gut is wrong this time around.
1. 31,230

3. Jo-Jo goes 7, 3BB 3K 2R 1ER
Picks
1. 27,888
2. Chipper Jones

Agreed about Jo-Jo. I like his makeup, and can see legitimate potential, but it’s evident that he’s a mess of nerves on the big stage. His biggest test will be how he does after going through the order once.

He needs to...
... step up to the plate and prove that he’s not a AAAA player. If he keeps dominating at AAA and flopping at the ML level, he could earn that AAAA label.

I also am worried about Mr. Reyes. Plus since I can’t watch the game or even listen I fear coming home and finding out the Braves lost. Prove me wrong boys!
going to be tough...

picks 24
1. 24,024
2. 24
3a. 24 goes 2-4 with 2 extra-base hits and 4 RBIs.
3b. Pyro, Z Fortune and Colonel John, to win, place, and show at the Kentucky Derby.
Argh
We’re hitting Belisle real hard and working the count GREAT, but only one run. Meh, hope Jo Jo doesn’t collapse.
HAHAHAHA
Anyone who’s got the Braves feed, PLEASE tell me you just LAUGHED YOUR ASS OFF at JJ. That guy is such a joke.
Agreed
ESPN has Erin Andrews, Rachel Nichols, Suzy Kolber
SS/FSN has Katy Temple
Hell, FOX has Jeanne Zolasco
Yet, PeachtreeTV has JJ. Seriously, can’t they at least try?

Remember when TBS had EA doing the studio show? Sigh…those were the days. I legit started freaking out and throwing things when I saw Mark Fein the next year.
I know nobody can compare to Erin Andrews, but can’t they at least choose someone moderately attractive and female to do their shows?
I know – Jamie Kotsay. Surely she can read cue cards, and has to know enough about baseball to BS her way through segments, as if we’d be listening to her speak. This way, she can stay with Mark, even on the road. And then we can all laugh at MLB’s version of Doug Christie.

I was actually reading on…Deadspin or the Big Lead…about this girl at Liberty University named SAMANTHA STEELE. Sounds like a porn name, but the girl is somehow MORE GORGEOUS THAN EA. Seriously. It feels a tad bit skeezy since she’s a college girl (well I’m still in college, so yeah), but still…dear sweet baby jesus.
bigjoe
good commentary dude. I cant pick up the game and I wanted to see how JoJo is doing and seems good so far.
braves#1
But seriously
How great is it to hear Skip Caray doing TV? I guess Lemke is doing the radio with Pete…I really, REALLY miss Pete on the TV games, he’s so awesome. How him or Skip hasn’t won the Ford Frick Award yet, I have NO clue.
yep, pete and mark on the FM...
Doing a great job.

Wow
Nice Smoltz jersey.
one more time ... for sting!! a sports blog written by two opinionated males
I have a white Smoltz jersey, but I didn’t pony up for the “authentic” lettering. Seriously, its like an extra 80 bucks…I figured it was the safest bet at the time about 4 years ago, and I was right.
This year I’m looking at a red McCann or Francoeur. I want a Frenchy one bad, but the lack of a long-term deal has me nervous. McCann is a safer bet.
And of course, if we resign Tex…he is SO the pick next year. Also considering a 1974 Aaron, since that will NEVER get old.
Hmmm
You’re in Georgia, I’m assuming, so here’s a tidbit:
If you know where Peachtree City is, there is a Hibbett Sports store there that has decently priced Alt. Red Hudson jerseys (authentic black 15 w/ white lettering) on a regular basis.
Why? Because Huddy lives in Peachtree City. The owners said that he came in a few times, and gave them jokingly teases about how they didn’t have enough of his jerseys on sale.
one more time ... for sting!! a sports blog written by two opinionated males
I’m about 800 miles from Atlanta, ha. Though I AM kicking around the idea of a ROAD TRIP and possibly a drunken Talking Chop meetup at Turner in July or August.
And Hud’s a free agent in 2 years…NOT SAFE!
Nevermind then. Pete Orr also lived in that area, but I would have laughed if they had Pete Orr jerseys for sale back then.

4 Ks…nice job. Mark says he looks so much more confident out there…Oh I hope, hope he can give us this for the whole season. We need it.
Totally off topic

but CDM is on a Monday. Who the fuck goes out and gets wasted on a Monday? especially since I have finals that week…but none Tuesday…but yeah, my friends blow, so I’ll just chill and watch the game (if there is one, I haven’t checked the schedule yet)
I work with a lot of young folks at a pretty lax company that believes that it’s okay to celebrate CDM, no matter what day it falls on.

Got some of the Sam Adams Summer Ale today for the Derby/game…semester’s over, watched the derby, enjoying baseball outside with a summer ale… life is good.
bleh, i’m going cheap tonight and doing the miller lite gimmick. i work across the street from a distributor and saw a couple of interesting gimmicks today: the LABATT SUMMER SAMPLER,and BUD LIME. i kinda liked Miller Chill, so I think I’d be down with the Lime…but the summer sampler intrigues me since I’m really down with the Labatt gimmick.
I saw the bud light lime, and it looked disgusting.
Good choice with the Labatt. I’m a big fan of the LaBatt.
Haven’t tried the Miller Chill, but the old woman at Publix keeps pushing it on me every time I buy beer there.

Hypocrisy
I thought it was funny that Miller did that whole man laws gimmick, where the wrestler was all like NO FRUIT IN BEER, and they made it a man law, and then Miller comes out and releases Miller Chill with Lime.
one more time ... for sting!! a sports blog written by two opinionated males
I'll keep that in mind
‘Cuz man law or not, I do like my Coronas, Sols, or Dos Equises with limes every now and then.

Is this a joke or something?
I’ve heard lots of people referring to Yunel Escobar as “Pablo.” What’s the story behind it?

If I go to Turner this summer, it is MY QUEST to get a new picture of MRS JAMIE KOTSAY for the board. I don’t care if I have to KO guards to get into the wives section…its gonna happen.
Just keep your ears open
If there are ANY Mark Kotsay appearances scheduled, I am so there. Because, I want to you know … support what’s his face, Mark.

Pablo Escobar
notorious colombian drug lord. Not really funny and definitely not in good taste, but….hey, it was a lapse of my usual high standards.
YEAH!!!!!
Escobar is on FIRE, that Renteria trade is looking better by the day with Jari’s emergence. Good to see Kelly get out of his funk too.
All of a sudden
This looks like any game where Tim Wakefield is pitching, or Johnny Estrada is catching.
Next thing we know, Brian McCann will be going off to see Dr. James Andrews, and before we know it, he’ll need Tommy John surgery.

BOOOOOOOOOOO!
Jo Jo pitched GREAT until this inning, shame he gets hosed out of the quality start. And we go to the bullpen…and we know how much of an adventure that can be. If Resop blows this, things are getting BROKEN.
YEAH OHMAN!!!!
Only bad thing is, we’re probably gonna get some combo of Resop/Boyer in the 7th & 8th, because I don’t think Bobby has realized that Campillo can go 2 and light shit up.
Hahahaha
JJ’s not even looking at the god damn right camera while blabbing away.

My guess
Most older folks with kids and families, doing whatever older folks with kids and families do. Some might be at the game, or just not at their computers.
I’m stuck in the middle – still in the 20s, but with my own house in the ‘burbs.
Didn’t feel like going to tonight’s game, my next season ticket isn’t until late-May, but I might go to Wednesday’s against the Padres.

making the drive for the Padres…but I think I’ll wait, since Maddux isn’t going to be pitching.

can't decide
was thinking about getting either a home or an alt jersey, but just a plain one, since I don’t want to pony up for one with a player on it… not sure, any advice?
Whatever you choose
Get it at the Ted. You can get a blank replica for $60, of any type at this one spot IN the park, and not in the parking lot from some bootlegger.
one more time ... for sting!! a sports blog written by two opinionated males
get the red alternate. i think the braves site sells them for $90. i really want one, but i’m taking the plunge and getting a player (mac or yuney) soon.
The store I mentioned earlier
Authentic Huddy red jerseys for $65 in the off-season.
one more time ... for sting!! a sports blog written by two opinionated males
No biggie
Jerseys are more expensive than ever. I remember when NBA jerseys were $44 instead of $70, and NFL jerseys were $55 instead of $65.
Blank replicas on the Braves site are $80. If you go to the Ted, there is a store behind Tooner Field (Cartoon Network building) that does custom naming, but you can buy the blank jerseys from them for $60.

the reds are a decent young team, i’ll be more than happy with 2/3, with a sweep possibly coming tomorrow.

Hahaha
Glad to know I’m not the only one using that term. The Towel throws a lot like Reitsma, and for the most part, sucks as bad. I’m just waiting for Resop to allow the tying run to be on-deck, and seeing Bobby in the dugout, being able to clearly read his lips saying “god damn it, son of a bitch”
one more time ... for sting!! a sports blog written by two opinionated males
Resop = Reitsma
They are the same to me. They even kind of look the same to me. I don’t know, I just assume they are cousins or brothers or something. No 2 people can suck that bad without a connection.
Just thinking the same thing
They do kind of look alike. Reitsma’s a little taller though, it seems.
Oh yeah, I got into a huge verbal fight with Reitsma’s cousins while out at Safeco Park, it was awesome. The argument ended when they asked why I hated him so much, and I drunkenly turned my Braves hat around so they could see the Atlanta emblem, and told them that their cousin ruined my team for a year. They didn’t really have a comeback for that.
one more time ... for sting!! a sports blog written by two opinionated males
If Resop doesn’t blow it, that makes five relievers for me.

BTW
I wore The Shirt again tonight and per instructions found on this here site, didn’t wash. I’ll repeat tomorrow…
Results
Attendance for the game was 37,969. With a guess of 37,273, musicman gets the point.
Kind of hard to pick a click or two when everyone has two hits. We’ll give one to Yunesco for his three hits and KJ for two doubles (apologies to everyone else in the lineup). One point each to:
Smoltz’s Beard
secondbass
AAB picks, one point to:
sdp
Come on gondeee
I called five relievers and we used five relievers – that had to be worth something, right? Bennett, Ohman, Campillo, Boyer, and REitsmop – I know the last two are negligible, but they’re still on the roster!
