Reds @ Braves Game Thread and NAHWAL

Cincinnati Reds at Atlanta Braves, May 3, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

For the first time this baseball season I have a weekend off and I will be spending it watching the Rome Braves take on the August Greenjackets. Should be interesting with two of the top hitting prospects in the lower minors (Angel Villanlona and Jason Heyward) going head to head.

Anyways the Braves will toss rookie Jo-Jo Reyes onto the hill against former Braves great Matt Belisle (pronounces Be-liz-el in my head). If you hadn't picked up on it through various comments and what not, I like Reyes and I have liked him since last season. His most glaring weakness was the walk and so far this season in Richmond he has only issued 8 in 23IP. That is much more controlled compared to last season. As long as he doesn't let his nerves get to him and he pitches the way that got him here he should be fine.

The offense should get a rebound day against Belisle (Be-liz-el), though now that I say that he will most likely two hit us. We shall see.

I will make my best attempt to take some pictures at the game tomorrow night and use them in a customary 3-day minor league wrap up post.

Picks...

I know he’s been tearing up Triple A, but I just have this gut feeling Jo-Jo has lulled us into a false since of security. He had success in the minors last year, and it just didn’t translate. Honestly, I hope my gut is wrong this time around.

Agreed about Jo-Jo. I like his makeup, and can see legitimate potential, but it’s evident that he’s a mess of nerves on the big stage. His biggest test will be how he does after going through the order once.

He needs to...

... step up to the plate and prove that he’s not a AAAA player. If he keeps dominating at AAA and flopping at the ML level, he could earn that AAAA label.

Remember when TBS had EA doing the studio show? Sigh…those were the days. I legit started freaking out and throwing things when I saw Mark Fein the next year.

by bigjoe on May 3, 2008 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know nobody can compare to Erin Andrews, but can’t they at least choose someone moderately attractive and female to do their shows?

I know – Jamie Kotsay. Surely she can read cue cards, and has to know enough about baseball to BS her way through segments, as if we’d be listening to her speak. This way, she can stay with Mark, even on the road. And then we can all laugh at MLB’s version of Doug Christie.

by royhobbs on May 3, 2008 7:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I have a white Smoltz jersey, but I didn’t pony up for the “authentic” lettering. Seriously, its like an extra 80 bucks…I figured it was the safest bet at the time about 4 years ago, and I was right.

This year I’m looking at a red McCann or Francoeur. I want a Frenchy one bad, but the lack of a long-term deal has me nervous. McCann is a safer bet.

And of course, if we resign Tex…he is SO the pick next year. Also considering a 1974 Aaron, since that will NEVER get old.

by bigjoe on May 3, 2008 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm

You’re in Georgia, I’m assuming, so here’s a tidbit:

If you know where Peachtree City is, there is a Hibbett Sports store there that has decently priced Alt. Red Hudson jerseys (authentic black 15 w/ white lettering) on a regular basis.

Why? Because Huddy lives in Peachtree City. The owners said that he came in a few times, and gave them jokingly teases about how they didn’t have enough of his jerseys on sale.

And Hud’s a free agent in 2 years…NOT SAFE!

Nevermind then. Pete Orr also lived in that area, but I would have laughed if they had Pete Orr jerseys for sale back then.

can't decide

was thinking about getting either a home or an alt jersey, but just a plain one, since I don’t want to pony up for one with a player on it… not sure, any advice?

by jug on May 3, 2008 9:30 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Whatever you choose

Get it at the Ted. You can get a blank replica for $60, of any type at this one spot IN the park, and not in the parking lot from some bootlegger.

get the red alternate. i think the braves site sells them for $90. i really want one, but i’m taking the plunge and getting a player (mac or yuney) soon.

The store I mentioned earlier

Authentic Huddy red jerseys for $65 in the off-season.

only in

the off-season? that sucks…

by jug on May 3, 2008 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, really. i can’t afford to road trip during fall semester for a jersey.

by bigjoe on May 3, 2008 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No biggie

Jerseys are more expensive than ever. I remember when NBA jerseys were $44 instead of $70, and NFL jerseys were $55 instead of $65.

Blank replicas on the Braves site are $80. If you go to the Ted, there is a store behind Tooner Field (Cartoon Network building) that does custom naming, but you can buy the blank jerseys from them for $60.

one more time ... for sting!! a sports blog written by two opinionated males

by royhobbs on May 3, 2008 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

because it would BEHOOVE bobby to allow a reliever to go more than an inning. we’ll get resop in the 9th, and he’ll allow a run or two

The Towel

Bobby’s thrown in The Towel…8 run lead…we might be OK.

by WienerDog on May 3, 2008 10:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hahaha

Glad to know I’m not the only one using that term. The Towel throws a lot like Reitsma, and for the most part, sucks as bad. I’m just waiting for Resop to allow the tying run to be on-deck, and seeing Bobby in the dugout, being able to clearly read his lips saying “god damn it, son of a bitch”

Resop = Reitsma

They are the same to me. They even kind of look the same to me. I don’t know, I just assume they are cousins or brothers or something. No 2 people can suck that bad without a connection.

by jug on May 3, 2008 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just thinking the same thing

They do kind of look alike. Reitsma’s a little taller though, it seems.

Oh yeah, I got into a huge verbal fight with Reitsma’s cousins while out at Safeco Park, it was awesome. The argument ended when they asked why I hated him so much, and I drunkenly turned my Braves hat around so they could see the Atlanta emblem, and told them that their cousin ruined my team for a year. They didn’t really have a comeback for that.

Results

Attendance for the game was 37,969. With a guess of 37,273, musicman gets the point.

Kind of hard to pick a click or two when everyone has two hits. We’ll give one to Yunesco for his three hits and KJ for two doubles (apologies to everyone else in the lineup). One point each to:

Smoltz’s Beard
secondbass

AAB picks, one point to:

Come on gondeee

I called five relievers and we used five relievers – that had to be worth something, right? Bennett, Ohman, Campillo, Boyer, and REitsmop – I know the last two are negligible, but they’re still on the roster!
