Observations from Rome

I was at the game in Rome tonight (Friday), and here are a few things I thought I'd report to anyone interested:

1.  Freddie Freeman is not only a power hitting dude at 1st, but he's also very good defensively.  He hurt himself pretty good tonight chasing a ball into foul territory - banged his knee into a concrete wall.  He limped throughout the rest of the inning, but came out of the game the next inning out.  He came out of the clubhouse limping and with his knee wrapped and said he wants to play tomorrow night, but he figures they'll make him sit.  Here's hoping he only misses the one game.

2.  It looks like the Jon Gilmore era in Rome may begin soon.  The big club website lists him on the Rome roster, but the Rome website does not.  The rumor at the stadium tonight was that Samuel Sime had been sent back to extended spring training, but I didn't hear any mention of Gilmore.  I just happened on his name on the roster.  We'll see what happens - maybe the paper will have the roster moves.  Adam Coe, incidentally, has been playing regularly at 3rd and has been doing very well - he hit a home run tonight and got a double that almost went out.

3.  Mr. Kurt Kemp was in attendance tonight - he sat behind the plate and watched Corey Gearrin and Scott Diamond pitch.  He moved up to the suite seats for a while (the Atlanta Braves game was on the tv).  Who knows exactly what he was doing - maybe just taking inventory, who knows, but one usher told me he was there last night as well when Locke pitched.

That's about it.  Rome lost, so blech.

I wonder if Cole Rohrbough isn’t far behind? I hope so. But where are they going to play Gilmore? Freeman is at first, Coe at 3rd, Johnson in Left, Heyward in Right. You think they were trying to teach him a new position in instructional league?

I don't really know....

They played Samuel Sime at third a lot over Coe so far this season until Coe recently caught fire and they realized Sime wasn’t going to figure things out. Sime was the Dominican player of the year last year for Atlanta, so I guess they really wanted to give him a shot. I guess it really raises the stakes for both Coe and Gilmore to see who can be consistent. Plus, they do play with a DH in Rome, so they could theoretically both get lots of at bats. Cody Johnson was the DH last night and Berres played left. We’ll see….

For what it's worth....

....Gilmore’s in the lineup tonight at 3rd for Rome and Coe is the DH.

how “extended” is extended spring training? Like, are they doing spring stuff into July? Then wouldn’t it be like…summer training?

extended spring training turns into the GCL i believe once the draft is over. I think extended spring still technically goes on, but most of those guys in extended spring are there because they don’t have a roster the organization believes they can fit on at the time so when there are more teams those players get sent to those teams. But extended springs training takes place in the Braves complex in Disney where normal spring training happens. It is really just instructional stuff. A lot of times guys go there to learn a new position or something also.

Hello, NWGA

I wasn’t at last Friday’s game but I was thinking of driving down to Rome to see the game. I was debating on whether to go to the Braves or Lookouts. I couldn’t make my mind up and with gas prices, I talked myself out of it. Nevertheless, I make it to a few Rome games a year. Only thing about me and the Rome Braves is about 90% of the times I went (which is alot over the year that the Braves have been in Rome) it has rained on me. Grat example, I went to a game last year when Chipper was to do a rehab start at third. There was rain before the game making the turf a little sloppy. With the field somewhat sloppy, the Braves front office scratched Chipper from his start. Later in the game, the bottom feel out of the sky. It was nuts to butts under the stands. Needless to say, I got soaked. Always have a good time in Rome no matter the rain. The hot dogs from the cart are very good and worth the price. Both Rome and Chattanooga are good places to watch a game, but I give Rome the advantage because you get more bang for your buck in Rome. The food is better and prices on point not to mention the view is better.

secondbass and cgilmo78, are ya’ll from NWGA or the Rome area? I’m between Chattanooga (20 miles south) and Rome (50 miles north) on US-27.

Actually....

....I’m south of Rome about an hour away (hour and a half if I don’t speed). Incidentally, I’m about the same distance north of Columbus, so I get to watch Rome play there 2 or 3 times a year.
Here’s a tip for you at Rome: they have the Coca Cola pavillion down the right field line (big building, green tin roof). Anyway, if you go to the left end of the building, they have a dollar kids menu – hot dogs, cokes, fries – good stuff, and the portions aren’t that much smaller than the regular menu.
Yeah, I love going to Rome.

Oh yea... I love it too

I use to live about one hour south of Rome myself, in Carrollton while I was going to school. The great school of The State University of West Georgia.

I like going on Thursday nights. In the past years, Thursday have been 2 for 1 beverages including the ones with hops and barly. I usually hangout on the third base side where the beer garden lays. I usually don’t drink all that much. One with a hot dog, for tradition sake. I like hang out in the beer garden because the scenery is nice over there. Thursday must be hot college chick night as well. It makes it hard to watch the game.

I have seen the Coca Cola pavillion, but I never made it over there. I’ll have to check it out next time. I think I am going to try the $1 hill seat this time around too.

Me too

I’m actually from Roopville, which is just south of Carrollton – I grew up in Carrollton and went to West GA as well. I like Sunday games the best because I take pictures – day games are much better for me in that respect. I have three kids, so my time is spent at the dollar menu, as you might imagine! I tried to be a cheapskate and get 2 for one souvenier cups of coke, but that was a no go. The homerun hill seats are $4, by the way….still cheap!

rome

Actually, I do not live in Georgia.

I live in Anniston Alabama just across the GA state line. The ATL club is actually closer to me. However I love minor league baseball, so i go to 2 rome games to every 1 ATL games.
