Braves @ Brewers: Extra Beer-Frame Edition

Atlanta Braves at Milwaukee Brewers, May 27, 2008 8:05 PM EDT

I really have nothing on my mind that is Braves related today, I mean, they haven't DFA'ed anyone in almost 24 hours. I think my body's in shock from not getting to stay in bed until noon like it had been doing the last three days.

I'm thinking I'm going to drink some beer tonight, in honor of the Brewers. I've got some of that new Sweetwater Road Trip beer that looks mighty delicious. Perhaps this man was drinking too:

Remember, no NAHWAL today. I promise I'll sort that out soon.

Im stuck at work...

So I guess ill miss the first 3 innings or so. Here’s to jumping out to an early lead, these road woes have got to end sometime!!

if you’re at THE GATHERING in august, and you promise to pick me for NAHWAL GOD, I’ll cover your WHOLE tab.

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 6:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow. You would've had me at "If"...

that is, if I still drank! :} Alcohol, that is.

Good news is that I can be a DD…just don’t piss me off or I’ll do a Jeff Foxworthy and drop you off at the wrong house.

i’ll tell you what, me & you…we’re gonna make things happen!

good news: gregor starts. bad news: diaz starts.

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Can't we..

..just drop the Diaz subject. I mean it’s getting old, and maybe if this was July or August maybe you’d be on to something, but it’s May for Pujols sake.

It still is just amazing how quickly a fan base will turn on it’s own.

by RainDelay on May 27, 2008 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

look, i don’t mind matty starting against lefties. he hits them. i do mind him starting against righties, and essentially costing us 4 ABs. no one is gonna argue the fact that “DIAZ CAN’T HIT RIGHTIES”.

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

at least its dave bush though. even diaz can get a hit off him.

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm..maybe soo..

But here’s his career vs RH: .287/.325/.706, so to say he can’t hit right handers is a bit much. Does he hit them as well as LH, well no – but according to his career split he hits RH pitching at a pretty decent clip.

by RainDelay on May 27, 2008 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

just for shits and giggles, here’s some more MATT DIAZ FUN:

last week: .118/.167/.118
last 2 weeks: .143/.217/.143
last 4 weeks: .159/.208/.159

over the past 4 weeks, he doesn’t have ONE extra base hit, and has TWO RBI. TWO.

vs RHP this season: .150/.175/.167

those aren’t good numbers. AT ALL.

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But how many ABs? He hasn’t been starting a lot lately.

by musicman on May 27, 2008 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

RHP on the season, he’s got 60 AB, just 10 less than against lefties…so its not small in comparison

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

In the over all scheme of things...

....60 AB’s is like dust in the wind man.

But I’m going to stop now, we’re never going to agree even if the numbers prove other wise. But hey to each their own..

by RainDelay on May 27, 2008 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

considering matt only gets about 400 AB a season, its a big fucking deal. over 15% of his season.

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I For One...

am rooting for Matt. I think he is in a SLUMP, folks. He can get out of this funk like any other player. If he hasn’t by the All-Star Break, I’ll join the chorus clamoring for his DFA.

by Chopaholic on May 27, 2008 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t really think there is an outcry for a DFA…just some people here who think Blanco has earned his playing time.

I still like it. Devine was doing nothing for us

by jjcollins on May 27, 2008 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, but imagine devine getting all those innings that resop & ring have gotten. its kinda a catch 22.

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i’ll take the 45 point BA advantage, thanks. plus, if we signed cameron, we’d have had to deal with diaz AND blanco starting all throughout april, which isn’t something i want.

by musicman on May 27, 2008 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

mark another -1 in the expected wins column. horribly, pissed right now.

BOBBY COX, ROT IN HELL AND DIE OF CANCER, YOU ROTTEN HORRID PIECE OF SHIT

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 10:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

First I had to listen to the Brewers feed...which was trash.

Apparently we have lost all of these 1-run games because Soriano has been out.

by mvandonsel on May 27, 2008 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Second, there is a broken (nah, shattered) bat single

Bennett lets the guy steal 3rd. Then we lose on a sac fly. This is Bullshit.

by mvandonsel on May 27, 2008 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

OH I’M STILL FUCKING PISSED RIGHT NOW. Bobby should tear up that fucking extension and resign RIGHT FUCKING NOW. Keeping Hudson in for the 8th? Bringing Bennett in for the 0th instead of Acosta, who’s apparently not available because Bobby overworked him yesterday? What the FUCK??!

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 10:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

God have mercy on this pathetic excuse for a baseball team...

YOU CAN ONLY SCORE TWO RUNS OFF DAVE FREAKING BUSH?

GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE CLOUDS, JEFF BENNETT. THE FREAKING WINNING RUN WAS ON SECOND BASE!

BOBBY—WHAT THE HELL? JEFF BENNETT IN THE BOTTOM OF THE NINTH INNING OF A TIE GAME. SERIOUSLY?

- Oh, Bobby. -

“ehhh jeffy’s been solid for me all year, i was pretty confident in him”

FUCK YOU

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That loss was disgusting

I don’t mind sending out Huddy for the eighth, but how do you let him pitch to Fielder, a guy who was hitting .220 against LHP in that situation?

How do you leave him in there to pitch to Hardy after he’s thrown 120+ pitches and his season average is 90 a game?

And Bobby is notorious for yanking starters earlier and playing the match-up game with the bullpen? What the fuck was he thinking? If you’re hesitant to overuse Boyer and Acosta (understandable) then why the fuck is Bennet in the game? The guy has pitched like every other game this year. Bring in fucking Stockman for chrissakes? What, we can give fucking Resop every chance in the world fuck up, but we can’t see what Stockman can do in a close situation.

Where the fuck does our offense go in late and close games? Better yet, why the fuck did we become so impatient at the plate in this game all of a sudden? AND YUNEL FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING HOLY WHY THE FUCK DO YOU KEEP SWINING AT THE FIRST PITCH???

Goddamn, I am pissed right now…

why not ohman? ohman’s a LOOGY too. REMEMBER, WE’VE GOT 2 OF THEM that bobby…won’t…use…

i don’t fucking get it. he’ll pull jair after 4+, but let hudson in there for over 120 pitches. SHIT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is

Probably the best post on this thread. I CAN’T understand why he left Hudson in either. I love BC but I’m really starting to look forward to TP taking over…in 2010, maybe.

I meant

get swolls’ question about Ring.

by WienerDog on May 28, 2008 8:22 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

GOD FUCKING DAMMIT i can’t wait until the holy trinity are back. and if bobby fucking uses dogshit like JEFF BENNETT at the end of a close game when someone like SMOLTZ, SORIANO OR GONZALEZ is available, i might break something a little more meaningful than a tissue box.

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 10:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Then who pray tell, do you throw out there then?

Especially if he’s trying to give Boyer and Acosta some rest…. Buddy Carlyle? No thanks.

by get swoll yunel on May 27, 2008 10:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

stockman? why the fuck not stockman? because he doesn’t have any experience? hes been relatively lights out since he’s come up. why bring in a guy averaging NEARLY A WALK AN INNING WHEN ALL IT TAKES IS ONE RUN TO WIN THE GAME?

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is what I'm saying

I can’t understand his complete avoidance of Stockman, but previously giving Resop NUMEROUS opportunities to fail and fuck up the game.

Fuck the experience, our bullpen is as thin as can be right now, and we need to use the arms we have out there….

by get swoll yunel on May 27, 2008 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i can understand giving acosta rest. i can understand giving boyer rest. BUT ON THE SAME FUCKING DAY? i mean, WHAT THE FUCK!? what the fuck was he gonna do if the game went extras, use ohman & ring in the same inning and then go to buddy for a shitload of long relief? i mean, SERIOUSLY??! congratulations bobby, ACOSTA & BOYER HAVE GOT THEIR REST! but we’re gonna be in 3rd place now. great job.

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is the biggest thing that was bothering me

with leaving Hudson in there… If that game goes extras, say, even to the 14th or 15th… who the fuck pitches then if you’re avoiding using 2 of your guys and another one is only ever used for one batter…

If you bring in someone to get Fielder in the eigth and someone to hopefully shut down the ninth, you save using multiple arms and you nail down a win.

Now, with Jo Jo going tomorrow, and the way that team rakes against LHP, our bullpen is going to be fucked even further.

by get swoll yunel on May 27, 2008 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, no doubt that we’re gonna see 2+ of bennett tomorrow. the REAL sad fucking thing is, this bullpen is gonna be RAPED with the 3 black holes of suck in the rotation where getting to 5 is a moral victory. jair getting pulled yesterday was just an extra kick in the balls.

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know someone is going to come in here with the whole

“you know you would have second guessed Bobby had he taken Hudson out in the eigth”

but that is garbage… I was calling for him to pitch hit for him after 7th and was hoping like holy hell he’d yank him once Fielder came up to bat…. after he gave the double and was still in the game I was in disbelief…

I still can’t understand what the fuck happened….

by get swoll yunel on May 27, 2008 10:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

BOBBY FUCKED US, THATS WHAT HAPPENED!!!!!

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

As bad as it pains me to admit it, your all definantly right on with that one tonight….I keep trying to make sense of what he might have been thinking but their is just no explination

by clemsonfan on May 27, 2008 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's a player's manager though

and the guys love him…

Yet the fact remains that he’s never figured out how to handle a bullpen and has definitely cost us several of the one run losses this year…

Is it 1-12 now? Goddammit….

by get swoll yunel on May 27, 2008 10:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

its not just ONE DECISION tonight that cost us, its several. not pulling diaz right away when he got hurt and letting him WASTE an AB. not pinch hitting for hudson in the 8th, causing him to WASTE an AB. not IMMEDIATELY pulling hudson when fiedler came up. bringing in bennett instead of stockman or a LOOGY. its just a multitude of STUPID FUCKING MISTAKES, and shows why he’s only won one wolrd title, in a year not long enough to FUCK US out of more wins.

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

damn

Didn’t get to watch the game because the nearest sports bar establishment (ironically Hooters) here in KY does not subscribe to Extra Innings. So, I watched the mighty Reds-Pirates game.

Sounds to me like Bobby may have cost it for us. I love him as a manager, but he does make mistakes and this was one of them. But, at the same time, he counted on guys to take care of business and they didn’t. That’s the name of the game sometimes.

Oh well, we live to fight another day.

by jug on May 27, 2008 11:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

Sometimes bats go cold and sometimes your offense doesn’t always carry the burden, but the fact remains that we were in control of that game that we needed and should have won, yet due primarily to our manager’s incompetence, managed to blow it in the end.

There is no rationale for how handled the eigth inning. He completely fucked the situation, and what makes it even harder to swallow is he went AGAINST he previous habit of yanking a starter when they begin to tire and get way up there in pitch count (and in this case, Huddy was WAY up there in pitch count).

It made no sense and is infuriating.

by get swoll yunel on May 27, 2008 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

That is really weird not to do what he normally does. I say the surgeon got yanked yesterday after 4.2. Was that because he ran out of gas or what? He could not get that last out?

by jug on May 27, 2008 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i didn’t see the game etiher, but was IRATE when i saw that. probably the usual bullshit bobby cox mentality of “kid just doesn’t have it today”

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Jurrjens wasn't locating his pitches for shit

And I wasn’t against pulling him when he did… But that decision and his decision tonight to leave Huddy in there when he was clearly tiring and throwing way more pitches than he was used to all year long does not jive at all.

Sorry for all the mispelled words and such… “Pitch hitting”? Really?

Diaz

He’s going on the DL….and Soriano is gettin activated

by jjcollins on May 27, 2008 11:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

looked like he pulled his hammy sliding into the corner.

with diaz out, and kotsay hurting, this could be trouble. we could be looking at a recall of BRANDON JONES. oh shit.

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

if SK was 100%, i’d be doing backflips. but he’s not, he might be put on the DL too, and we’d be looking at an OF of jones/infante, blanco & frenchy. FUCKING EW, HARDCORE

Diaz better be healthy by the next home stand.

by MattDiazFanClub on May 27, 2008 11:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

why, so he can strike out 10 times in 20 ABs and GIDP 4 times?

by bigjoe on May 27, 2008 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fuck you, he’s in a slump. I bet you were one of the people shouting for Tex to be traded away when he started the season slow too.

by MattDiazFanClub on May 27, 2008 11:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sorry, I’m just really pissed after that game. He went 1/3 with a should-have-been SB so I think he might have been getting out of it. remember his average the past 2 years.

by MattDiazFanClub on May 27, 2008 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m right there with you. I’ve liked him since day 1. The area he got hurt in has got to be the worst piece of ballpark construction I’ve ever seen. Even Joe Simpson was saying how negligent it was to have that much concrete and metal grating exposed.

by musicman on May 28, 2008 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's the first game this season...

...where I’m placing the entire blame on Bobby. Very upset.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 28, 2008 9:11 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’ve now had about 4 hours this morning to try and wrap my head around that loss last night, and I’m drawing a blank.

Runners LOB and bullpen implosions really piss me off…but I think I get frustrated the most when a terrific start by our staff is completely wasted, such as last nights. But then again, that normally goes hand in hand with shitty situational hitting and terrible late game pitching.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 28, 2008 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Okay everybody...

take a deep breath…....there, don’t you feel better!

I do agree that Bobby made some strange moves (or non-moves) last night, but the fact that they weren’t the moves he would normally make means he doesn’t normally suck, right?

I feel like one of the main reasons for our road losses is lack of patience at the plate. What’s hard to figure is why they completely change their approach once they leave Turner Field.
