PENA DFA?!?!?!?!?

Are you fucking KIDDING me? This is stupider than the Cox extension. How in the name of all that is holy can you DFA an average defensive catcher with a decentish bat to keep a VETERAN~! who "calls a great game" that is hitting 4 times less than his weight right now? This is unfuckingbelievable. I really hope a playoff team picks Brayan up and makes him a starter and he gets a huge deal. He deserves so much better than this shit.

I guess
somebody knows something that I don’t, but I’m surprised they didn’t try to trade away him or Clint Sammons, rather than just getting rid of them. Seems maybe a bit strange. Anybody got any thoughts on reasoning?

RETARDED
This makes no sense. If anyone should’ve been let go its Porky Corky I mean come on THAT guy sucks. They never even gave Pena a freakin chance at all this year he only had 14 at bats! How can you make a decision based on that?? Did he even get a chance to start a game this year? I dont think he did! I am so mad this is the worst move ever.

Way to overreact guys....
Pena is not going to “get picked up by a playoff team and be made a starter and get a huge deal.” He’s an average catcher at best. Ever wonder why he was asked to play other posistions in the minors and fall/winer leagues? Its because he can’t handle a pitching staff! Sure he had a decent bat, but thats all he really was. A bat without a posistion. And really he’s probably not even average defensively, which is why he was the pinch-hitter and not the back-up catcher. When we picked up Norton and Pena went on the DL with a “back sprain”, the writing was on the walls that Brayan was as good as gone. But look at the bright side, probably noone will pick him up and he’ll still be in our system.

Completely agree, Brayan Pena wasn’t in the Braves plans period. They didn’t view him as a catcher since the beginning of last season when he played more games at other positions than catcher. More than likely he’ll be picked up by someone as organizational filler – nothing more.
Corky is just keeping Clint’s seat warm at this point.

Exactly.
Apparently people here seem to think that our back-up catcher will be the difference between a World Series win and a neverending trip to the cellar! Seriously though, we’ve been trying to trade the guy since the start of the season and there have been no takers. I’d be surprised if someone claims him and, even then, we have the opportunity to work out a trade or take him back, no? Look, Pena’s a nice guy and I’d like him more than Corky, but this is no heart breaker or difference maker.

Bummer
Just be thankful they didn’t do the same with Blanco—at least some of their prospects get a good run up the ladder.

Well....
Theres a big difference between Pena and Blanco. Blanco can actually field and hit. Pena’s just a decent bat.

How do you know?
Have you even seen Pena in the field this year?

This year?
No, but look at his numbers from the Fall and winter leagues. Then look at the pitching staff’s ERA when he calls a game from the past. Then look at his numbers from years past in the Bigs. He’s no where near as good as you make him out to be. Corky may not be able to hit, but he can call a game, which is something Pena can’t do.

"an average defensive catcher with a decentish bat... "
What were they THINKING?? Who wouldn’t want a guy like that??
by skipcaray on May 25, 2008 9:05 PM EDT 0 recs
apparently bobby would rather have an above average defensive catcher with NO bat.

This has been the Braves MO for well pretty much as long as I can remember. I mean common, guys like Jody Davis, Todd Pratt, Greg Olson, Charlie O’brien. This is nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to back up catchers with the Braves.

And it seems like its worked out pretty well. Argue with Bobby if you want to, but 14 straight Divison titles and a World Series win make it pretty hard to stand up against one of the greatest managers ever. I hate it when people call Bobby “stupid” and “retarded”. You know what? He drafted most of the great Braves players from the streak. He hired Jon Shuerholz to replace him as the GM and then led the Braves to be one of the most dominant teams ever. Period. Yeah, he’s retarded…....

Apparently so
A backup catcher is going to be calling a whole lot more pitches than getting at-bats. If Corky calls the game well and doesn’t let balls get away from him, he will save as many runs as Pena would produce.
BTW, Pena’s a lifetime .228 hitter, so it’s not like he’s the next Ted Williams or anything…

but with pena, he may not “call as good a game” as corky, but hes gonna hit better than .087 too, and hes a valuable switch hitting bat off the bench, which is something corky definitely cant do. And i for one, after watching chris woodhead and stinky pete orr last year really value a guy who can come the bench and get hits.
oh and the .228 average is in limited play and still 141 points higher than porky…in regular playing time in AAA hes hit over .300 4 straight years

True, if Pena were used as a pinch hitter...
but generally, backup catchers are not used as pinch hitters, so that they can be saved in the event that the starting catcher has to come out of the game. So, Pena would not likely get a lot of pinch-hit opportunities, and if he did, it would likely be in a circumstance where one team has a substantial lead late in the game, and the game will likely be over soon, but the pitcher’s spot is coming up. In that case, it would be more of an at-bat to keep him sharp than one where we need a big hit.
At any rate, it’s not like our championship hopes are dangling on the difference between a .228 backup catcher and a .087 backup catcher.

Well
either way Pena would not be on this roster next year anyway because Sammons is the backup catcher for us next year. Heck he may be the backup catcher in Atlanta by July. I actually like Pena and maybe we can still get a decent prospect or SOMETHING for Pena. Well Wren has less than 10 days to trade him now. I think we might be trying to put him through waivers not sure though, but I figure somebody would snatch him up right quick like.

Stupider?
Yeah…
Anyway, I don’t really agree with this decision… But it’s definately not the end of the world. I liked Pena and I hope he does well wherever he lands, but it’s not like he was the difference between us and the World Series. We have much more important things to worry about that one of three guys working on being our back up catcher being DFA’d.

Corky's ability to call a game
Two words: Jorge Campillo.
I don’t think Pena, nor even McCann, could’ve gotten those two starts out of JC.

Really mature dude.....
I mean really mature. But, I’m not going to argue with you anymore since its pointless. I just figured I’d point out how much of a man you are by calling out a man currently on the MAJOR LEAGUE ROSTER of a team you pull for. But you’re right, Frank Wren, Bobby Cox and John Schuerholz don’t have a clue.
