Trade For Maddux
This teams needs another reliable, veteran arm if it is going to have any chance down the stretch. I wouldn't mind sending the Padres Rohrborough, Flowers, and Lilly for Maddux and a prospect (maybe Rayner Contreras). The Padres would dig it because they could dump a considerable amount of salary. Thoughts?
I understand the hesitation with sending Rohrborough elsewhere. I just wanted to put that out there in advance. Oh, one more thing: Mets suck! Y'all must be feeling great. I know I am. Okay, I think that's 75 words.

Maddux
That is way too much to give up for a #3-4 starter at this point. That is 2 of our top 10 prospects, and another who is a serious power threat. Way too much.
I wouldnt mind parting with a couple mid level prospects but nothing more.

It might be a little much, but...
I wouldn’t say it is waaaaay too much. Look up Contreras, he is going to be a very good third baseman in in the not so distant future (say, around when Chipper retires). Flowers has power, I’ll give you that. But I feel like it can be replaced/replicated. We have a surplus of pitching prospects and losing Lilly wouldn’t be the end of the world. Contreras will end up being a lot better than Lilly. So much so that it warrants (in my opinion) giving up both Lilly and Flowers for him. Then, I would gladly trade Rohrborough for Maddux. I don’t know. It makes sense in my head.

It's a bit much still
But i will admit that i dont know anything Contreras. I havent really ever seen him on any prospect lists though. I wouldnt give up Rohrbough in the deal, any deal for that matter. But in my mind he is our number one pitching prospect.

Contreras is...
A top 20 prospect in their system. Giving up Rohrborough wouldn’t kill us. He is one of our top pitching prospects (I’d say he’s our third best), but Maddux could win us some games in the postseason. Regardless, Rohrborough isn’t going play for the big league team this year. I don’t know. It does suck giving up Rohrborough, but that’s how the game is sometimes, you get what you pay for/are willing to give up.

You get what you pay for...
Which is exactly why i think Maddux isnt worth it. The only thing he really has on the guys we have now is experience and know how. And yes those are valuable, but he would still only be a forth more than likely in our rotation during the post season. i would rather go after an ace, or #2 if we are going to give up one of, if not our best pitching prospect.

Maddux Is Worth The Money
That, and Rohrborough is not our best pitching prospect. Morton and Hanson are significantly more developed (and have experienced more success) than him. You have a better suggestion? Who would you go after?

Reality Check.
The last time Maddux was traded, he went from the Cubs to the Dodgers in exchange for… Ceasr Izturis. Just the slightest bit of research and you would have avoided this craziness. Greg’s stats look like a #2 starter’s, but he’s pitching half his starts in Petco Park, he’s 42 and there’s reason to believe this will be his last season. I’d say Lilli alone might be too much to offer the Padres for him at this point and I’d expect something more along the lines of Prado or Diory Hernandez to be the return. Remeber, he likely won’t accept trades to too many clubs, so we won’t have much competition for his services. San Diego has already collapsed and the top of that division is tough, so they have little leverage.

Huh?
Research? To find out what? What it took to get Maddux in the past? I was just throwing the idea out there. Trying to start some meaningful and productive dialogue. Way to be condescending for no reason. Feeling a little passive agressive?

Look...
I’m not the one that puts that tone on your FanPost or my reply. If you wanna throw “do you think we should get Maddux” or “what do you think we should give up for Mad Dog” out there, that’s fine. But to get into detail about the package we should send to SD for him and make it so out of whack, that’s another. Yes. I think we should get Maddux if he comes at a reasonable price. What you mentioned might be enough for Blanton or anyone else that could be on the market this year! I don’t mean to be condescending or passive agressive, but that’s just way off base. I’m sorry man, I really am, if you took it hard. My apologies.

For the Right Price
I’d love to have him for the right price. I’d rather get someone like Blanton from the A’s, who will be a stronger pitcher and has more longevity, but if the price is right, I’d take Maddux in a second. He’s definitely as good or better as most of the pitchers available this year. The downside, of course, is that he’s old, and would likely only give us the rest of this year, then maybe next year, if we’re lucky.
If the Pads are looking to cut payroll, it would make sense to offer Lilly. Yunel’s locked in at short for awhile, which leaves Lilly without a position. Trading him to the Pads would allow them to dump Khalil Greene, who’s eating $11 million over the next two years. Giving up Lilly wouldn’t cost us much, it would bring us a quality starter for at least the rest of the year who could help us make a playoff push, and it would be fun to have the big three back again for old time sake.

No way we would have to give up that much in prospects
Maddog is making 10 million right now and the Padres are going absolutely nowhere. They would love for us to take that salary off their hands in exchange for a decent prospect or two. Decent, not anyone top-tier.
Furthermore, while I agree our starting rotation is eventually going to need some help, I don’t think Maddog is the answer. His (and Glavine’s for that matter) finesse pitching styles did not help us in the playoffs in the early 2000s and I have little faith that they’d help us much when those guys are now in their 40s.

After JJR’s performance tonight, we need to do SOMETHING. Chuck James maybe?
by bigjoe on May 23, 2008 10:07 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Maybe.
I think Chucky has no value, but Davies got us Dotel last season and this could be similar. Petco is an extreme pitcher;s park and they could rebuild him. The Pads are a smart franchise, though, so I’m not sure they’d be interested.

Yeah. Real smart franchise.
Smart enough to expect that Jim Edmonds, Scott Hairston, and Brian Giles actually comprised a major league outfield. Smart enough to go from making the play-in game last year to having the worst record in the majors this year.
Max Scherzer is all out of bubblegum.
by DbacksSkins on May 24, 2008 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Jeez.
Smart enough to turn Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka into Chris Young (SP), Adrian Gonzalez and change. Smart enough to acquire Doug Mirabelli from Boston for Mark Loretta, only to have the Red Sox give them Josh Bard, Cla Meredith and $100K just to get Mirabelli back later that year. They also got Ken Caminiti and Steve Finley for Brad Ausmus and Ricky Gutierrez, plus Greg Vaughn for Ron Villone and Marc Newhan.
Look, every team has a history of success and failure, both of which can be fleeting. The Padres have done a fine job over time of assessing, acquiring and developing talent in order to remain competative. Kick them while they’re down all you want, but just because your D’Backs are on top of the mountain right now (remember 2004? 2005 and 2006 weren’t good to you either…) doesn’t mean you’ve been perfect. You may want to wait until you’ve won something big before getting the head to match…

Eh
Its a good thought for the old time sake but in reality not so much

Why Not?
He’s pitching well, even if it is at Petco half the time. For the right price (i.e. Prado or Hernandez) I’d be fine with it and it would help us.

Methinks the hold up to a Maddux deal will be 1. whether he wants a trade and 2. whether the Braves can take on ~$3.3 million, not which prospects are involved.
by 17843 on May 24, 2008 10:19 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed.
But only because the prospect(s) involved will likely be minor.

To go back home?
I think he’d take a trade to come back to us. The only other team I could see him waiving his clause for would be the Cubs and they look set. As far as the money is concerned, the owner of Liberty Media said he’d give FW however much he needed in a recent interview with Forbes, so I don’t think it will be a monetary problem.

In the words of Smoltz
you cant have a staff made completely of old farts and give up Rohr would be STUPID

Funny, But Untrue.
Smoltz said that when HE was in the rotation, something that is no longer the case. Acquiring Maddux would simply put us right back where we started, in terms of age.

Interesting topic but you are off base in thinking bringing back Maddux would do much good.
1) becuase his lack of pitch count depletes the bull pen
2) his results have been at petco and while turner is a pitchers park it is not petco
also, maddux wouldnt do us much good..he isnt as big of an upgrade over morton or james as the numbers would indicate.
giving up rohrbough in any deal for him wouldnt foolish. if we were to go out and get a pitcher we would get one like blaton who will be a difference maker.
by jsmall404 on May 25, 2008 2:00 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree...
That giving up Rohr would be ridiculous but he’d be better than James, and probably Morton for one really good reason. Experience. He’s done almost everything there is to do as a starting pitcher and you can’t underestimate that factor. Sure, he’s not as good as he once was, but he’s still the Mad Dog.

Really? He’s got an OBP over .390 versus both LH and RH this season. I love the way Gregor is playing so far, but it’s hard to believe it will keep up over the course of the full season. And Diaz is killing us at the plate so far this year.
It’s completely short-sighted, but if we are shooting for a WS win this year, it might not be a bad move.

I’m reading about that exact possible trade as we speak on Baseball Prospectus. Did you read the article?
Also…do you frequent MLBTradeRumors.com?
by Smoltz's Beard on May 27, 2008 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Trading Shaffer?
I saw that rumor there too, and the first thing I thought was “There’s no way we’d trade Shaffer! Who will play center next year? He’s the heir apparent in the outfield!” I hope we wouldn’t trade one of, if not the best, prospect in our organization for a pitcher who has maybe one more season in him, and an average at best outfielder who we don’t really need.
But then I got to thinking about who we would deal Shaffer for, if we did. All I could come up with is a really good starting pitcher (maybe Blanton) or a young first baseman to replace Tex, since we don’t have any prospects at first. Anyone else have any thoughts?
