Open Thread: Mets @ Braves (5/21)
New York Mets at Atlanta Braves, May 21, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
That was a nice double-header sweep yesterday. I say keep it going for the next two games and then sit back and watch the Mets implode. Jorge Campillo pitched great, and I say keep him in the starting rotation. His stuff last night was as nasty as I've seen from any Braves starter all year.
It's a new era for Jeff Francoeur, who is struggling mightily and was benched for the first time since 2005 -- a span of 370 games. Francoeur has been doing his best Andruw Jones impersonation lately which has led to a seemingly prolonged slump. The swings and misses have also plagued Frandoeur; while he only struck out 7 times in 25 games in April, he has amassed 17 strikeouts in just 17 games in May.
My new enemy number one is Ryan Church. He had two overreaching and unwarranted slides in last night's game, each time sliding into Yunel Escobar. On the first one he came up from his slide while he was under Escobar which caused Yunel to tumble over hard on the ground. The second slide was on a double play to end the game in which Church slid wide of the bag with his body and head still high off the ground (not the usual defensive take-out slide). His head hit Yunel's knee and both players went to the ground. There was no need for Church to keep his head up like he did. Just about every other player in baseball gets out of the way of the shortstop they know is jumping over the runner. This is not as bad, but it reminds me of the Darrin Erstad incident with Johnny Estrada in 2005 -- they were both overzealous borderline dirty plays.
Church had to go the hospital with a possible concussion and Yunel was said to be sore. I'm guessing we won't see Yuney in the game today and we can just hope that there is no serious damage to his knee.
Jair Jurrjens toes the rubber tonight. I'm guessing Francoeur will be back in the lineup. And after Teixeira's showing in the double header yesterday, I'm hoping he's finally found his groove.
Remember, no NAHWAL today.

Agreed.
I didn’t actually see the first slide, but I thought the game-ending slide had plenty wrong with it. I am certain that he didn’t intend to get his bell rung by Yunel’s kneecap, but he seemed to have the intention of taking him out rather than just breaking up the double-play.
I wish would could call up Chuck James just to bean Church next time we play (and he plays). Chuck strikes me as the kind of guy to do it.
Hopefully Yunel will be alright
Trainer: You got hit in the head.
Church: Wha??
Trainer: You got hit in the head. Can you tell me your name?
Church: TUESDAY!!!
Yeah, he got destroyed last night.
Church had it coming.
He took wide, he didn’t get low enough, and got a concussion as a result. I’d only be upset if Yunel were legitimately hurt for an extended period of time as a result.
I disagree with beaning Church – that’s an Ozzie Guillen cheap shot. As much as Ozzie entertains me, sending a guy in the game with intention to just bean a guy is down right classless. The Braves are better than that. Besides, Chuckie can do that with just his lack of control.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
LaRussa TIME
Beaning is an integral part of the game that has been lost on the recent generation of players and coaches. Obviously Church was beign dirty, it was the second time and it was wide. That’s not the issue. Also, dont bean him in the shoulder or back, get him on the leg just to send the message. Players love playing for Bobby b/c he’ll sacrifice himself any day any time, but once in a while its good to show that we’re freaking tough.
Church got what was coming to him, but if Yuney’s out for a few days, the beaning should DEFINITELY happen.
I read 3 Nights in August too
I agree what beaning exists for, but from my perspective, I disagree with anything that puts anyone on base, especially deliberately. Personally, I like what Renteria did last season when Ted Lilly plunked him – Lilly got a little too close to the face, so Renteria immediately stole second and nailed Fontenot hard “as a result of the motion.” The situation was essentially rendered “even,” and both teams continued from there. There was also a time last year where Chris Young plunked a Brave, whether it was deliberate or not was a moot point. The Braves were down, and Chad Paronto plunked Young in later innings, clearly “accidentally deliberate.” Young ended up being driven in, and the Braves lost the game by a slim margin.
Plunking just results in higher risk of injury, and in some retaliatory sense, kinda childish. Ironic, coming from a guy like me…

Campillo
Was that a pitching performance or what? Absolutely dominating. Wonderful game, both in fact.
BTW, anyone know why the Mets fans refer to our team as the “br*ves”? Obviously derogatory I just don’t know the context.
I was wondering that myself. I’m sure it’s really clever!

Going to game tonight...
...So I won’t be able to participate in the scintillating conversation tonight. Nor tomorrow, I’m going then too.
So, jug, you’re on duty:

If you can’t do it, delegate it onto someone else.
And don’t let bigjoe blow the save like he almost did last night… that was a scary call.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
aye aye captain
you can count on me…TO NOT POST EARLY!
(...bigjoe…we forgive you, since your boy SK bailed you out!!)
Well...
...seeing as it’s now passed the 1/4 point in the season, did anyone expect Sex Cannon, Thumbs, and SK to have more bombs than FYF so far? I sure as hell did not.
Escobar. Pretty sure no one actually calls him that, but it came into the discussion when we were trying to figure out a nickname for him.

I need some Atlanta directions....
I’m going to the game Thursday night, and I’m staying in Buckhead. Can someone give me the best route to take to (and from) Turner field?
Lots of variables
If you can tell me if you’re starting in Buckhead or coming directly where you’re from (..TN was it?), as well as how much you want to pay for parking, and if you do or don’t mind some walking, I can give you some pointers… or there’s always gondeee’s guide on the main page, too.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
I already have a parking pass
for the green lot. I know how to get there in general; I just was looking for tips on maybe better ways to get there than the GA 400 / 85S route.
This is what I always did
-Exit 248A on the 75/85 Connector “Courtland St/Georgia State University”
-Stay on Courtland (It gets bad sometimes, but no worse than the highway)
-After you pass Georgia State campus and City Hall, take a left onto Mitchell St.
-Mitchell Street will force you to turn right onto Capital Ave. which turns into Hank Aaron Dr.
-Stay in the corresponding lane that leads to the Green Lot. Voila!
But if you’re coming directly out of Buckhead, it sounds odd, but I would actually stay on either Peachtree Rd/St. or hop onto Piedmont. Both will run into 14th Street, which you can use to get onto Juniper Ave, which turns into Courtland St, and then you can use the above directions. Highway traffic is frustrating, and since the official Turner Field exit coincides with intersecting I-20, it gets real bad there.
Leaving the Ted, I’d recommend the West exit, which will funnel you under a big bridge, and then take a right onto Central Ave. Central turns into Peachtree Center Ave., which eventually merges with Peachtree St, which will give you a nice tour through the night-time city on your way back into Buckhead.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Your Team Sucks And They Like It
If there were a brawl (which there won’t be), half your players would just go back to the clubhouse and leave.

Obviously You Aren't Quick On The Uptake
I hate the Mets. I could care less about how well their clubhouse is doing. But, most baseball fans know that the Mets are having issues because of accountability (or lack thereof) on the team. Wagner is pissed because Delgado, Beltran, Reyes, etc. suck and don’t step up and admit it (they never do post-game interviews). They just resign themselves to suckiness. As for Chip, say what you want, he is ass stomping every team in the league. So deal with it.

and all in caps
no less. The question is was it all the meth or the inbreeding that did him in? I’m guessing the combination of the two while his sister-mother was pregnant with him.
You Might Be A Redneck
How do we know you aren’t really Larry the Cable Guy? ‘Cause if you were, that’d be freakin’ sweet! ARE YOU? NO SERIOUSLY, ARE YOU?!

Picks
1. 40,040
2. Kotsay
3. Kotsay 2 doubles…and kudos for stepping in as Yunel’s other crutch to get off the field
Escobar out of lineup...
... sore knee. It’s a day-to-day thing. He’ll probably miss two games. No DL.
-RETIRE, BOBBY COX!-
I love a good rivalry...
...but not when it has nothing to do with the sports teams involved. So far, our all caps hater has really not given us any reason why the Mets are a superior team. Let’s recap their arguments:
1. We Braves fans are rednecks.
2. We will not make the playoffs because:
a. Chipper is 80 and Bobby Cox is “ancient.”
b. John Smoltz broke a fingernail.
3. Our team “sucks.”
4. Reiterates Braves fans are rednecks by saying we need to brush our teeth.
5. The only player on the Braves “worth a dam” is “Macann.”
6. Chipper Jones is gay, will get injury, and come back to Earth.
7. NY has “tons and tons” of sports reporters.
8. This site is gay.
Now, I will try and give a rebuttal for each argument, despite the fact that some are not related to baseball.
1. No point debating the fact that many Braves fans (especially on this site) do not even live in Georgia or the country, as this seems to not be the issue. Call me a redneck, I call you a blueneck.
2. As the Mets kindly displayed last year, the playoffs race can go deep into the season. Chipper was born in 1972, and I’m a dumb redneck, but that makes him 36 by my calculations. Maybe math doesn’t come easily for New Yorkers, as they didn’t realize losing 12 of 17 games equals no playoffs. Also, the oldest manager to win a World Series was Jack McKeon of the Florida Marlins at 72. Bobby is only 66. Fail to see the argument. Also, John Smoltz has as many wins this season as Pedro has both last year and this year combined. More strikeouts too.
3. Yes, our team sucks…we have a .500 winning percentage, compared to a .478 by the Mets. Since we’ve been in Atlanta (1966) we have 1 championship, 5 pennants, and 16 playoff appearances. The Mets (1962) have 2 championships, 4 pennants, and have been to the playoffs 7 times. Wonder what they in October all those years when we were playing baseball?
4. I personally have 0 cavities. I brush twice a day.
5. I have never heard of any Braves being compared to dams before, but being from Kentucky I’ll compare the cost of Kentucky dam (creating the largest artificial lake in the eastern U.S.) to Chipper Jones. Kentucky dam cost $118.5 million and was completed in 1944. Chipper has made over $105 million since 1993. Sure, if you figure inflation the dam probably is substantially more. But, would you rather watch a dam sit there, or Chipper hit a ball 4 out of every 10 times he comes to the plate? Anybody know who Macann is?
6. I think Chipper’s martial indiscretions speak for his sexual orientation. Also, please give me a Met on the roster who has better numbers over the past 5 years regardless of games played in.
7. Yes, they all are busy covering the Yankees, because that is who anybody in NY cares about.
8. Really? It is? Oh, well by all means let me never log in again…
I know gondeee will ban him, but if you want to talk baseball let’s talk. Leave the kids stuff for the playground.
STATEN ISLAND IS STRAIGHT GANGSTA HOMIE, EVEN THO WE’RE THE FIFTH BOROUGH THAT ALL NEW YAWKAHS POINT AND LAUGH AT, WE’RE STILL NYC SON! I’LL FUCKIN CUT YOU BOY!~
Surprise.
He did not get thrown out. I’m surprised. Are you surprised?
Yeah if we are naming 80 year olds.
What about that Alou fella? He’s no spring chicken.
People not to walk.
Carlos Delgado.
Then Carlos Delgado.
Thumbs is a fairly error prone
second baseman. There we go.
I didn’t get a chance to watch the first 6 innings (stupid softball), so I didn’t get a chance to see Thumbs botch yet another play. Where’s the person who was questioning me about KJ’s defense? He’s made like 4 errors since that arguement.

Seems unlikely
JJ is going to knock a run in. But it would be nice.
Like I said earlier.
No Reyes on base. Please.
Hustle single.
From Tex. He can move that bobble butt.
Lets do it
SK. You know you want to make Jamie proud.
nothing to talk about until we get on the other side of the dish again. HO HUM jair doing his jair thing
He's been solid quality.
That was a kick ass trade.
haha
yeah, I mean, the overarching point is interesting…latin players ‘conveniently’ not knowing English.
But I could care less about the Mets internal strife. It brings me joy, but I don’t care why.
I was wondering the other day...
since KJ seems to have problems at second why don’t the Braves move him back to the outfield and let Gotay play everyday, or even Prado when he comes back? Is it because of the Tommy John, can he not play the outfield any more?
He's honestly better at 2nd.
He was never a very good left fielder. I’m not sure what the other decision might be, but for now he’s decent enough at 2nd. He’s not great, but he’s not actually terrible.
That is very possible.
Looking at some limited numbers, no he isn’t. But it’s hard to judge with a small sample size.
Of course
Gregor Blanco is a much better left fielder than either of them. So if that were the sole consideration he’d be starting every day. I think given the makeup of the team right now having three possible starting left fielders doesn’t help us as much as having Thumbs start at 2nd, or at least serve as an infielder off the bench. It may very well be a Tommy John thing as well.
Mwahahaha.
Loaded them 1 man before the pitcher. Take that!
question: why is campillo coming back on THREE DAYS REST saturday? that seems to uh, not make much sense to me
Most likely because he didn't throw that much yesterday.
Also, because the Braves don’t have an off day until June 9th. Yuck by the way.
Yes.
Days off for FYF for a good long time now. Where did this come from?
Come on Omar.
No screw ups. This inning better end.
HBP
I’m not usually one for retaliation, but we need to hit the first Mets batter with the first pitch next inning.
bigjoe came up with it. i just laughed my ass off and made a point to repeat it. often.

Mets strategy
so i guess since they can’t beat us they’re gonna try to take out our players?
Mets Target list

Lets put an earned run
up on this jackass. Tarnish that ERA a bit.
Also Diaz.
Swinging at the first pitch. And getting a hit. Still he swings like he gets paid each time he does.
I ended up having to buy my friend (Mets fan) a beer because of this. How did we not score a run!?

Oh well.
Thank god the game isn’t close. Also they better not tie this up. Or even close.
Music to my ears
I’m sure a lot of you could hear it on television – after the Schoenweis plunking of Chipper, Scotty got an earful that sounded a lot like Philadelphia between every. Single. Pitch.
I couldn’t help but just keep laughing the entire inning. I swurr Tex and McCann kept hitting just to keep the inning moving, so that the fans could keep booing. It was music to my pierced-up ears.
I occasionally wonder what kind of nonsense is being posted here while at games. It’s like, once the game kind of got out of reach, I imagined some sort of drastic subject change, perhaps involving something as random as like David Hasslehoff. But then when the Mets clawed together some runs in the 8th, I was beginning to wonder if bigjoe had begun to celebrate early like the previous night.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
we weren't
really very talkative tonight. sorry to disappoint. I’ll think of some random crap to bring up tomorrow when we’re up 12-1 in the 4th inning.
If Chipper isn't playing tomorrow night
at one of the few games I get to go to, I will personally give Scotty an earful.
Very Happy...
...to see the result when I got up this morning. I tried to make it through the whole game, but (not to sound like I’m whining), a full day of staring at screens knocked me the hell out.
Here’s the best part – I share an office with a Mets fan. I actually can’t wait to get to work today.
