Minor League Recaps: 5/17
Norfolk 0, Richmond 4
- J. Anderson - 2-5 RBI,
- B. Jones - 2-4 2 2B, 2 RBI, K
- J. Rouwenhorst - 9IP 5H 0R 1BB 3K
Rouwenhorst was a long time Angels farmhand who pitched primarily out of the bullpen until last season. He became a minor league free agent and Braves picked him up in the offseason to fill out the the Richmond rotation. He really seems to have taken to starting this season and I wonder if he could be of any value at the Major League level. Brandon Jones' May has been a lot more like his normal production with an OPS around.850 for the month.
Mississippi 9, Chattanooga 2
- M. Young - 2-4 RBI, BB
- J. Perry - 1-4 HR(10), 4 RBI, BB, K
- J. Guzman - 2-4 2B, 3B, RBI
- T. Redmond - 7IP 4H 2R 2BB 4K
Mississippi continues to roll in the month of May. Jason Perry has 10 homers in 30 games with the team and celebrated in style by making it a grand slam in the 7 run 7th inning. Redmond strung together another solid start after having a few bad ones. Also of note Kevin Gunderson made his AA debut tonight for the M-Braves and pitched a scoreless inning of relief. He is our best relief prospect right now and i would guess figures into the bullpen in the next season or so.
Wilmington 5, Myrtle Beach 0
- Blake Wood - 6IP 1H 0R 2BB 10K
Yeah Blake Wood doesn't pitch for the Pelicans but when your team only gets 1 hit off him then really there isn't anything worth saying about them. Baseball America ranked Wood as the 5th best prospect in the Royals system in this years handbook. He is a hard thrower who has had some injury and control problems in the past but hasn't really had problems with either so far this year. Good for him.
Hickory 14, Rome 2
- J. Heyward - 1-3 HR(5), RBI, BB
- F. Freeman - 1-4 2B, RBI
Just to note: Jason Heyward played CF in this game. If anyone was there (looking at you secondbass) I'd love to hear how he looked. The dude is super athletic and much more lithe in person than I had anticipated so I think he can handle it for now but I don't see him staying there long term.

Nope....
....I wasn’t there. I’ll be there tomorrow, so I’ll look for him in CF. Interesting…..I’ve wondered what the Braves might do in the event that Heyward is ready quick (2 years or so). What to do with Francoeur? Schafer, assuming he rebounds? I guess Heyward in center might not be a regular thing, but you never know. Frank Wren was in Rome last week, from what I heard. The usher I talked to said Wren sat behind home a couple of nights with his laptop clicking. And a week or so before that I saw Kurt Kemp there. I wonder if something’s up…...anybody see them at any other parks lately?

Saw Kemp in Norfolk
I saw Kurt Kemp in Norfolk a few weeks ago when Richmond was playing there. The GM and the player development guys tend to get around throughout the season. It usually doesn’t mean anything, but a guy can go out and play well in front of them and put himself in the back of their heads.

By the way
Rome is playing worse than Mississippi and Rome was suppose to have an awesome team this year, yet they struggle to score runs. Heyward and Freeman shouldn’t stay there the entire season.

yeah Rome started alright but they have really slipped and Mississippi has boomed with the arrival of Perry and now Gorecki. It is amazing how bad Rome’s offense is. This should also be taken into account when we look back at Heyward’s season later on. The fact that there were only two hitters in the lineup will have to be taken into account.

I’d like to see Rouwenhorst up with the club sometime. He was pretty solid in spring training. If he keeps up his good work in AAA, we may see him sometime.

I was at the game tonight in Richmond and Rouwenhorst looked great. I saw him pitch in relief a few weeks ago too. He doesn’t really blow anyone away but he knows how to pitch. Josh Anderson helped him out with two huge plays in centerfield. Rouwenhorst does have this interesing windup, I’d compare it to a clock; his leg swings back and then swings up into an elevated leg kick and then into his windup. Might be deceptive enough that he’s fooling guys.

Being from Oregon..
..its nice to see Gunderson get promoted. I figured he may have to stay at the Beach for the full season. But, they proved me wrong – and I’m pleased as punch.
