Minor League Rehab Assignment x 3

SHOP THEM ALL!!!! SHOP OFF EVERYONE!!!!!

Seriously though. Potentially, we have the somewhat near future gifts of both Gonzo and Rafi, AND SMOLTZ coming (back) to our bullpen.  That is a VERY enviable bullpen.  When we had Gonzo, Rafi, and Wicky as our 7th and 8th and closer, it was working really well.  Gonzo has closed before, and did well. Someone else can posts the stats.  Rafi is the bomb, we all know what he's capable of. And, if Smoltz can do it while not running on fumes, maybe we'll have the only real lights-out closer around.

When a healthy Gonzo is your 7th inning man, that's a solid bullpen. (I like him more than Rafi though, so i'd actually put him 8th)

Therefore - why not try to ship off our boatload of shitty, unreliable relievers? As i'm typing this, I realize that we wouldnt get shit of a starting pitcher for what we have and what's out there, and I cant think of a position that we would need to fill now either (except LF?).  Maybe this whole post is a farce. Or, maybe its a ploy to get your creative juices flowing, and to have someone else come up with a good idea of how to dump our soon to be excess bullpen baggage.

C'mon Beard, dont let us down.

The bullpen

Here’s what I would like to see happen, when the “Big 3” come back. Note this is just my opinion:

-Reitsmop DFA’d
-James and Acosta sent to Richmond (the latter only because he has options)
-Bennett to the rotation

Smoltz closes, use Soriano and Gonzalez in the 7th and 8th depending on the matchups. I realize we’d have 3 LH in the pen, but Gonzalez’s splits are close enough as to be even, and we could have two LOOGY’s if we want to go that routs (in Ring and Ohman). Campillo is the long man, and Boyer fills in where needed (people need a day off, etc.).

i like your ideas

Especially Bennett to the rotation. That’s what i’d like to see as well.

Just a feeling, but...

I think Smoltz is done; he’ll be playing golf full time soon.

Hmmm...

Diaz v. LHP: 351/.351/.474 in 57 AB
Blanco v. RHP: .298/.394/.368 in 57 AB

I think LF is fine as it is. In fact, we should be using the benefits of the platoon more aggresively. Moreover, we might want to work Blanco into a platoon of sorts in CF as well, considering that Kotsay is crushing righties (1.037 OPS) but really struggling against lefties (.453). Gregor has been capable against LHP in a limited sample and Mark could use some rest every once in a while, considering his past health issues.

As for the bullpen, I’m not counting on Soriano until I see him pitching for Atlanta again. The fact that we can’t seem to figure out what’s wrong with him freaks me out. Gonzo is another that we should temper our entusiasm about; it takes some months of regular pitching to work yourself back into form after TJ surgery. I trust Smoltz will be our closer, sooner rather than later, and deadly effective at it. So, a ‘pen of Smoltz, Boyer, Gonzo, Campillo, Ohman, Ring and Bennett would be fine.

True

My statements were based on the assumption that all three return healthy; which of course is no given. I should have clarified that in my original post.
