How did we lose that game, c'mon!

Last nights game should have been over in the second inning!  It had that feel that if we didn't put it away we would find a way to lose and of course, they did.  Kendrick looked nervous and the Philly infielders felt it and visited more on the mound then they would have if he's was in the hospital!  JoJo is good hitter and a lousy bunter and Bobby tried it twice and lost.  Killed us and lost us the game.  Let Reyes swing away, no one get a bunt down except Blanco.  Bobby is hall of famer, no doubt, but I think it's time to retire. The game seems different and Bobby is part of the old guard.  Old dogs!  Just an opinion no need for the young guys who read this to take it personal.  It would be refreshing if some of the usual posters don't go insane and make it personal towards me.  I have my thoughts just like you.  I can only hope.

Bobby.

I love Bobby to death, but he’s killing me with his bullpen management. He can stay as long as he likes, he’s earned that much, but it won’t end our chances to have him retire.

I try not to...

...”go insane” and nothing should be taken personal. You can think whatever you want about baseball. Chances are when you go to bed at night, you could probably care less about what I think. Depending on your age, you may have even watch more baseball than I have (maybe). However, when you say things like “no one get a bunt down except Blanco” I’m going to say something about it. The game isn’t as black and white as you make it.

Zzz...Zzz...

I’m old so the Braves have put me to sleep several nights, but never made me lose sleep. I do agree that Bobby has made what I consider some terrible pitching moves, but by the time a pitcher in the NL gets to the majors, the minor league system should have done a better job of teaching him to bunt. I think Jo Jo has a great future as a pitcher, but unless he learns that the head of the bat needs to be out in front of the plate when you bunt (or unless Bobby or one of his coaches can explain geometry to him), he should just let him whiff at 3 and sit down! The real issue is runners LOB; Tex left 5 again last night and Frenchy left 4—total of 19 by all; you can’t expect to win like that.

Winning will cure everything

Nothing personal. Just a response with my opinion too. If we were to win the next 10 games, no one would complain about Bobby.

Only reason Bobby is getting any heat is because we lost. And because we have lost more than we have been expected to. If we were 10 games over .500, everyone would be saying Bobby needs to come back next season. Had JoJo gotten down that bunt, everyone would have agreed that was a good move.

His managing of the bullpen is pretty much trying to patch holes in a dam with chewing gum. Look at what we THOUGHT we were going to have and look at what we do have. Moylan and Soriano GONE. That’s huge. But what’s bigger is we hardly have a starter beyond Hudson that can last more than 5 innings. That means you’ve got to find a combination to hold for 3! We don’t have a closer, so we have to play matchups and do the best we can. He plays the matchups because that’s what gives us the best chance.

I disagree that Bobby is the reason we’re losing games. I don’t claim to know everything about the game, but in my opinion as a fan and as a follower of the game, I think Bobby is still a great manager. What’s killing us is execution of DPs, getting bunts down (sorry Jo-Jo, but pitchers HAVE to be able to do this), untimely errors, and an offense that is not putting up the numbers its capable of producing.

The Irony of this post is that you have blatantly made whatever feud you feel exists even more personal by publicly calling other posts into question. The onus is on you sir not other posters.

It's Not Bobby

Bobby may not have been the best major leaguer, but he hasn’t suddenly forgotten how to manage. As a fan (who has the benefit of hindsight when I criticize the decisions that Bobby makes), I may not agree with the way a game plays out. In fact, during my time as a Braves fan (since about ‘85), I’ve been livid with Bobby on countless occasions. I, again, have the advantage of hindsight. Bobby has blown countless games as our manager, but he also gave this city 14 consecutive division championships. You think we’d be any better with Snitker as our manager? What about TP? I doubt it.

You are exactly right

I probably should have said that in my post above too. Because, the fact is, Bobby can be the reason we lose a game. A manager might make a bad decision—or make a decision that doesn’t work out—and it cost the team the game. I think every manager would agree to that. So I don’t have anything new to add, but I wanted to make sure people don’t think that I believe Bobby is infallible. I just don’t think he’s the reason we’ve not play up to expectations.

Bobby is great

I as well have had many a moment since becoming a braves fan where I have just littered the room with vulgar language towards a decision Bobby has made, but I also remember plenty of fist pumps over the years from many great decisions he has made and the unbelievable job he has done. Turning around a team from worst to first, winning fourteen consecutive titles, and getting thrown out of more games than any manager in history in order to keep his key players in the game to give the team the best chance to win. I also remember the last time we won a division title, and we won that title with about a million rookies playing that season which is not too bad of a job by the manager if you ask me.

All these things were great, and only a great manager could have accomplished them, so it really baffles me when people call on Bobby to retire. Don’t get me wrong, it has been a frustrating season to watch so far, but I don’t think Bobby can take the blame for this. Yes, he has probably made some poor decisions, but personally I think he has done a hell of a job with the hand he has been dealt. His three best releivers are on the disabled list (Moylan, Soriano, Gonzalez), his starting pitching has been decimated by the DL as well (James, Smoltz, Glavine, Hampton) , so he hasn’t been able to fill out probable pitchers for more than a week if he is lucky. I think if you take into consideration these factors, Bobby should be up for Manager of the Year right now instead of being ridiculed by people sitting on their comfortable couches watching the games from afar. I mean injuries and bad luck have hit us harder than any other team in the majors by far, yet we are only 2.5 games out of our division and the wild card, and we are playing over .500 baseball. So, instead of trying to get rid of Bobby, I want to make a early season nomination for Manager of the Year.

Also, if you think Bobby’s decision making is our main problem, maybe those of you wanting Bobby ousted should look at our offense in close games and late in games…..maybe we should call on our starting lineup to retire from the sixth inning on and play corky miller and company in those situations instead.

theres a difference between bobby cox circa 1991 and bobby cox circa 2008.

how about instead of sending JoJo up there to bunt the second time, he send someone up to pinch hit?

oh wait, because tex was unavailable, corky miller can’t hit, and diaz is diaz.

by bigjoe on May 14, 2008 3:49 PM EDT   0 recs

Should have sent up Gotay.

cannot continue to lose games we should have won

That was another game that we should have won and I’ll bet Bobby took full responsibility for losing that game. We need to win this year! Smoltz, Glavine, Tex, Kotsay, and a handful of others will probably not be in a Braves uniform next year. These games we should have won add up and at the end of the year it seems to always be a game here or there that makes all the difference.

Taking responsibility...

doesn’t mean that he would have done anything any different. I’m sure Bobby is not going to start second guessing himself at this point in his great career. But, even the greatest careers come to an end at some pont, so like the Boy Scouts say, “Be Prepared”. After this year there will be some available cash for FAs, and I personally think Terry will be managing next year (and I mean in Atlanta).
