Minor League Recap: 5/09

Richmond 2, Louisville 0

  • B. Canizares - 2-3 HR(4), BB, K
  • B. Jones - 1-4 SB
  • D. Hernandez - 1-4 RBI
  • F. Bueno - 6IP 5H 0R 0BB 5K

Bueno pitched a great game and was really picked up by the bullpen too who pitched 3 inning of no run ball. Diory Hernandez now is hitting .415 on the season at AAA while being held hitless in only one game so far. I would love to see him in ATL at some point also but chances are slim since he isn't on the 40 man right now and we have several infielders in ATL and Pena can play some INF as well.

Mississippi 8, West Tenn. 9

  • K. Kaaihue - 1-4 HR (2), BB, 3 K
  • G. Creek 2-4 RBI, BB
  • J. Perry - 2-5 2B, 2 RBI, K
  • D. Evans - 3.1IP 9H 7R 5BB 3K

Top Prospect Dustin Evans got demoralized (again), this time by West Tenn. That brings his ERA up to 9.48 on the season. Just spectacular. You know only in baseball can a power hitting prospect go 200+ ABs without a homer, and then hit one in two straight games, simply amazing really. Maybe Kala got his adjustment period and now he is going to start raking like he did at the Beach last year. He has struck out in 40% of his PAs this year though. That can't be good. Which of course means he is doomed forever because I have pointed out a negative stat.

Myrtle Beach 6, Wilimington 1

  • T. Flowers - 1-5 HR(3), K
  • B. Powell - 3-5 K
  • W. Cabrera - 3-5 2B, 2 RBI
  • R. Reynoso - 4IP 2H 1R 0BB 4K

Reynoso pitched another solid game for the Pelicans. He has really been impressive in his last 6 starts. It is good to see Tyler Flowers doing some power hitting. He hasn't hit a homer since the 2nd week of the season and I was starting to worry a bit. He had some pretty extreme home/road splits but those are starting to come down a little now. He hits lefties well but all his homers have come off of righties.

Rome 2, Greenville 5

  • J. Heyward - 2-3 2B, HR(4), BB
  • F. Freeman - 2-4 2 2B, K

That is really all for the positive performances in this game. Chad Rodgers hot hit pretty hard in 5.2 IP. Jason Heyward is starting to see his power spike a little (4 doubles in his last 10 games) which is of course good news. When I saw him in person I was struck by the fact that he is definitely a big boy, but his frame didn't look 'full'. He's going to add more muscle and he going to hit some long home runs. ::Shivers:: Freeman has 6 doubles in his last 4 games and is really settling into the SALLY league. I had heard his bat was good and I can't wait to see him develop some more. Gilmore is supposed to have an excellent bat but he just got to Rome.

w/r/t Kaaihue..

...he’s horrible. Don’ t know what happened to him – but wow. And what’s Lillibridge’s problem? He hasn’t hit a lick all year…

And don’t get me started on Dustin Evans, it’s amazing they’re letting him still pitch considering just how horrible he’s done so far this year.

Yeah the baffling thing about Kaaihue is that he went so long without hitting a homer. I mean come one, at some point you have to hit one right? But yeah he’s been atrocious. Evans is a disgrace and I don’t know what has happened to Lillibridge. He was hitting well in ST and then he falls off the table when he gets to real baseball. You think it was that disheartening to him to not make the roster.

Yeah, though I’ve never been on the Kaaihue band wagon, ever – I just see him as nothing more as a Scott Thorman type. As far as Lillibridge goes, man if he doesn’t get his act together soon – he’s going to be riding the pine or end up back in AA with JC Holt.

Though I keep waiting for Diory Hernandez to come back down to earth at some point.

Who falls below .400 first: Diory or Chipper?
