Would You Trade Chipper Jones for Johan Santana?
Alright there are really only a couple of rules to this.
- Salary is not an issue - just pretend that we are the Yankees
- This obviously assumes that the Mets would be willing to trade Santana to us. I don't care if they would or wouldn't in real life. I want to know if you would trade the best hitter in baseball the last two years for the best pitcher in baseball the last 3 years.
And that is pretty much it. Heck if you wouldn't trade Chipper, who would you trade? What starter would you want if not Santana? You know who I would take over any starter in baseball? (and I would have said this before this season too) A healthy Roy Halladay. When he is healthy he is always a threat to throw a shutout.

way to go braves fans!!!
I think if Santana was on any other team, the results would not have been the way they are now – very heavily favoring Chipper. When someone gets on the mets (or yankees) it just takes their appeal away so much.
I think our young pitching will be fine for a nice future.
And, responding to the Halladay line – serious? You wouldnt take Peavy, Webb, or Haren? Watching Webb pitch is like watching surgery. Like old school Maddux.

I have a feeling that...
...you have not had the chance to watch much Halladay in your life. You have to take into account that he pitches in the AL East, which has been a slaughterhouse for pitchers, during his tour with the Jays. He’s just as good as Peavy and Webb, and better than Haren IMO. Hallday’s strikeouts have been down every since he started getting injured, but he’s been able to adapt to still find success.
I know it’s a long time ago, but his performance during his Cy Young season was absolutely dominate. Even more so when you consider that the 26 HRs he gave up that season were so out of character for him. Very unlucky in that regard, when he has never given up over 19 in any other year.
He’s easily one of my favorite pitchers in the league.

For those too lazy to look it up...
...Halladay’s line for 2003:
22-7, 9 CGs, 2 shutouts, 266 IP, 204/32 K/BB, 3.25 ERA, 1.07 WHIP.
6.38 K to BB ratio!?

thats cool
i hear you. I remember seeing his name, even knowing he was good, but i’ve been obsessed by Peavy and Webb lately. The whole AL East is basically banned from my memory banks anyway, at least until the Orioles win it all.

Oh don’t get me wrong, peavy and webb are good (as I gave Webb love in my second Would you trade post of the year) but like the stats show I think Halladay is potentially the most dominant 9 inning pitcher from start to start. The problem is those 9 inning starts are what lands him on DL so much. I like Rich Harden too, but he’s worse injury wise

Totally agreed.
Halladay is one of the most underrated pitchers out there. It’s hard to find a box score, where it doesn’t say something like “7.2, 8.2, 9.0 IP” next to his name. Earlier this week, he lost in a CG effort where he gave up ONE earned run. If I were him, I’d be ready to kill.
I always entertain thoughts of fantasy rotations, based on a theme – Halladay would definitely be the ace of the All-Endurance Rotation>
Roy Halladay
Brandon Webb
C.C. Sabathia
Aaron Harang
Dontrelle Willis
All guys who are often giving long outings, and/or complete games and/or shutouts.

It just blows my mind...
...that he’s pitched 4 straight complete games, and he has lost the last 3 of them. His latest start against the Red Sox was particularly awful (he gave up 4 and 5 runs in the first two, which is not spectacular). I was watching the game and when Youk singled in Big Papi they showed a slow-mo reply of Halladay backing up the plate…you could see him mouth the words “god dammit” or “fuck” or something along those lines and then he just sprinted into the dugout and back to the lockers.
You could tell he was really upset.

Stupid Question
As a Braves fan, this is an absurd question that will rightfully make any Mets fan laugh. Any GM would be immediately fired if they traded Santana for Chipper.
by Dandrews on May 1, 2008 1:03 PM EDT 0 recs
Maybe not the most logical...
But I wouldn’t trade Chipper for Santana. Two reasons, which have nothing to with anything about baseball logic. I like Chipper Jones and I don’t like Johan Santana.
Okay, I realize Santana is the best but I’ve never really been a fan. I mean, his numbers are obviously gaudy, he is possibly the best of the last several years, but I just don’t like him. I can’t explain it. Maybe I just don’t buy into all the hype about him, even though I acknowledge how good he is, just maybe not THAT good. Perhaps I’ll think differently about him after seeing him pitch more this season.
You could make the argument that Chipper is oft-injured of late, but he still gives 110% and when he’s in there he’s one of the best. Plus, I could never imagine seeing him in another uniform.
Come on ‘Beard, post some numbers to back me up!
by jug on May 1, 2008 1:27 PM EDT 0 recs
i dont have numbers....
but i’ll back you up on Santana….. I think there’s even MORE backlash from Braves fans for the dislike of Santana. I mean, sure, you’re an idiot if you dont acknowledge that he’s got talent. But there are three reasons (one aforementioned) that I think its just harder for us Bravos peeps to swallow:
1. He’s a Met. End of story.
2. As Braves fans, we are automatically going to scoff at any pitcher, and any rotation (except for the A’s big 3 a handful of years ago and possibly the Padres’), and say to ourselves “Sure, _ pitched well. But, was his name Maddux, Smoltz, or Glavine?” I mean, I think with the combo of that trio we had for years, and the luxury of having Smoltize be a LIGHTS OUT CLOSER (please let it happen again!!!), any pitcher is going to be held in a lower esteem. We are just flat out spoiled. Santana, Shmantana, or Beckett, we’re going to have some dislike for them.
3. This is a whim, a thought, a fleeting idea that maybe i’ll get flak for, but here goes. Andruw Jones. What does a talent-declining, non-producing one time CF great have to do with Santana? I’ll tell you. Torii Hunter. Another seemingly unconnected name? Well, for many years, we had the entire league bragging about and promoting Torii Hunter, while the entire NL stopped hitting to AJ and stopped running on him so his stats decreased. Granted, AJ is a heavy loser with zero work ethic nowadays, but during those times, Torii would get like the top 1 play on sportscenter doign things that AJ doesnt need to b/c of his wits and his jump to the ball. I think that led to a dislike of the Twins (since Kirby Puckett might not be enough), which would definitely help with the Santana hatred.
whew. If i could only write my paperwork for work with such fervor and confidence.

Haha...
...it’s hard to find numbers that put Santana down. The guy had a stretch between 2004 to 2006 that was one of the greatest of all time (if you really want to see an amazing stretch check out Pedro’s between 1997 to 2003…had a WHIP of over 1.00 only twice and had the lowest WHIP of all time in 2000: 0.74!). He pitched over 228 innings in all three seasons, with an ERA under 2.90 in each one, a WHIP of 1.00 or lower in each one, over 235 strikeouts in each season, and all the while composing a K/BB of 4.91, 5.29, and 5.21. He won the Cy Young in 2004 and 2006, and should have won it in 2005 also…he had better numbers than Bartolo Colon but the voters always get a boner for the pitcher with the most wins (just like Webb over Smoltz). Simply put…the guy has been the best pitcher in the game for a long time.
Chipper is…well, Chipper is Chipper. The best superstar in the game that everyone has forgotten about. His defense ranges from average to above average, with a very strong arm. He has shown a decrease in range the past few years, but it isn’t like he’s going to kill you. I still feel like he plays the bare-handed slow roller better than anyone in the majors. But we all know that he really shines in the batters box. The guy has landed on the MVP ballot 11 times (including his rookie year) in his career because he’s played the game at such a high level for a very long time. Between 1998 and 2003 he had an OPS of above .900 every season, including a 1.074 during his MVP season. He had 8 straight years of 20+ HRs and 100+ RBI. And this was all in his prime! Now he is playing better than ever! In 2005 and 2006 he did not have enough PAs to qualify for the title, but he could have been 9th in OPS in 2005 with .968 and 8th in OPS in 2006 with 1.005. Last year he did qualify and was 4th in OPS behind only A-Rod, Big Papi, and Carlos Pena with his 1.029 OPS. This year he’s 2nd so far behind Utley with a 1.145 OPS.
Much like the Smoltz/Webb deal, it’d be impossible for me to pull the trigger on this deal. Chipper is my favorite player of all time, and the fact that I’ve been able to enjoy watching his entire career is certainly special too me. I’m getting choked up just thinking of it.
If this trade is being proposed when both men are 28 years old, I think you have to go with Chipper. But it’s not. And as far as an objective view with the focus solely on winning baseball games now and in the future, I think whoever is getting Santana is going to win the trade.
*Just read that the gigantic douche-bag Jayson Stark voted Chipper as the best player in April. Duh.

Yeah.
I won’t say easily, because it took a moment of thought, but some combination of Prado, Escobar, and Lillibridge could hold down SS/3B and the addition of Santana into a rotation of Glavine, Hudson, Jurrjens, and who the hell knows would be gigantic. Win-wise, Chipper was worth 0.7 WARP more than Santana last year. His increasing age should eliminate that gap this year. And with all things equal, I think Lillibridge/Prado can out WARP Reyes, Bennett, and Carlyle, and Santana would save the bullpen, so I’d make the trade.

I'd take Santana
simply because he’s younger. Granted, you must keep in mind that were Chipper abruptly traded somehow, he would likely go on to hit .600 with a homerun every 4 at bats against the Braves. But I mean he’s got what, 4 years at the most, left in him? Santana for 10 years with Huddy and JJ. That’s pretty damn nice.
by Perrinbar on May 1, 2008 5:01 PM EDT 0 recs
Huddy, good question
what do you all see as far as Huddy’s future? Is he ours until retirement? Will he be an ace? Will he ever get his Cy Young and a No-hitter?
I remember that one night he threw a CG SO, maybe a one-hitter, maybe two, but it was damn close. Damn close. I
by traphicg on May 1, 2008 7:37 PM EDT 0 recs
some kind of joke?
Back when I was a kid I used to go see the Richmond Braves play. When I was about ten, they had Chipper, Javy, and Klesko. When Chipper hurt his knee right before what would have been his rookie year, I was pretty devastated. He’s been one of my favorite players for a long time.
But he’s not the best hitter in the league. He’s NOT a good third baseman, and never really was. And even if he were, and even if he weren’t 36 and unlikely to ever play 140 games in a season again, it’d still be a tough call. I think there’s like two or three people in the league that would not get traded straight-up for Santana, especially disregarding money.
Pujols, but that’s questionable with his elbow situation, A-Rod, maybe David Wright? Maybe Justin Upton in a couple years?
I find the results of this vote shocking. I don’t care who you like and don’t like, and I sure hope Wren et al don’t either (the Glavine move makes that look iffy, but he’s still effective and on the current market was probably a bargain).

Chipper is the bomb. End of story.
by traphicg on May 1, 2008 10:05 PM EDT 0 recs
It’s been a long time since I had a daily rooting interest in a team that didn’t have Chipper on it. And I know that part of being a fan is being invested in the players. But the biggest part is wanting the team to win. It’s easy to assume that this little blip will end and the division titles and first-round playoff losses will start piling up again and Chipper will be a part of it and Francoeur will start 10 All-Star Games, but that’s not the direction this is headed. In three years Chipper will be retired and Santana will, in all likelihood, still be an annual Cy Young candidate and still be at or near his prime.
Besides, the look on Mets fans’ faces would be priceless.

I totally agree with you that most of us are generally “team first, individual players second,” but I think the best way to approach this is with a comparison:
Andruw Jones: Never spoke out to the media, once took a dad-negotiated contract, but then hiring Boras was pretty much a middle finger to the Braves organization when it came to future negotiating. Slumped horribly in the end, showed a lack of discipline and attitude of “I don’t care,” ignored all advice from Pendleton, left the organization at a tenth of the volume in which he arrived.
Chipper Jones: Always speaking whether it’s good (interleague – bad) or bad (07 gold glove), despite the scandals he always publicly atones for it, but for the most part has become the embodiment of the team, with John Smoltz. Is often publicly putting the team first, even if means deferring money, or restructuring his contracts, for the betterment of the team. Actions show that he is putting the team first, and genuinely cares about, and is passionate about everything. Sure, it’s exaggerated, like “I thought i was going to throw up” during his little public tiff with Smoltzie, but at least he’s showing some passion. Which pretty much sums up his relationship with the Braves – passionate.
Yeah, I know that the team always does come first, but along the way there are players who are the teams. They are few and far between, but every now and then there are just guys you just cannot trade without some degree of hometown outrage. Chipper/Smoltz for Atlanta. Jeter in New York. Ortiz in Boston. Biggio in Houston. There aren’t many, lots are debatable, but sometimes, you just can’t trade someone away, just because the other end of the deal looks tantalizing.

chipper
heck no!!!!! besides being hurt the last couple of years, chipper is one of the top 5 hitters in the game hanley, rollins, ichiro, would be up there but average, power and OBP Chipper is a top 5 easy. there is no way i would trade him for santana. look at santana vs. chipper this year, santana has been rocked. the mets suck chipper could never play in New York. we need to win a world series for chipper and smoltz and end everyone hating on the Braves

blood bath that was Smoltz vs. Webb
I’d have to say I’d go with Larry here. Johan might possibly be the best pitcher in baseball, BUT an offensive guy that plays every day or a defensive guy that plays once every 5? You could find the arms elsewhere for better value.

No, I do not want to trade Chipper Jones. Chipper is an outstanding ballplayer and is definitely “A Brave Legend” just as Hank Aaron has said in his book Chipper Jones, his left is so hot, I love when he hits from the left. Not the best at anything, but a truely great baseball player and very good at everything!
