Braves could have had Felix Hernandez
Here's the article.

Pretty sickening to think about. We almost had him. Actually I'm quite surprised we didn't get him with our reputation for finding talent down there. It's crazy that he was scouted that young but i guess that's how they do it down there. Honestly I would love to know what they saw at that age that prompted three big league teams to bid for him. Would have been nice to have him, That would be a nasty rotation.

Yeah
I remember when they were scouting him way back when. Obviously with these young guys you just hear the name one offseason and then a couple years later he crops up somewhere.
If I remember right Felix said his family was just more comfortable with the Mariners organization and he had a really good relationship with the scout who was assigned to him.

thats pretty much what he said he just said that the mariners scout made an attempt to be his friend and not just talk baseball and thats what won him over

Grrr....
So much would be different... Do we trade Edgar for Jurrjens? Do we make the playoffs in 2007? Do we resign Glavine? It makes me sad this didn't work out... Here's to hoping Julio Teheran is the next King Felix.

Hernandez would've been nice...
But he's shown the Hampton-esque penchant for injury without at least proving as much prior to it. Yeah, he's one of a couple really young guys who have thrown shutouts at Fenway, and is seemingly "one of the future young arms of greatness," with guys like Scott Kazmir, but since then, he's been on the DL as much as he's actually contributed.
Call me crazy, but I don't think Hernandez is all that great yet. Aside from a handful of impressive starts, he can still improve. And he's young; cases in point - Kyle Davies, Pedro Astacio. Would acquiring Felix been worth trading the farm? I don't think so. Avoiding injury is as much a talent as swinging a bat, and fielding a ball. Muscle training and good nutrition are things that clearly not all ball players perform exceptionally (read: David Wells, Bob Wickman) and your body is the toolbelt required to harness all your tools. If you can't take care of it, barring freak accident injuries, then you're no better than a player that hits below the Mendoza line.
Besides, I'm really high on Jurrjens. Edgar for Jurrjens - win. Especially with the growth and development of Yunel Escobar.
Now with all this being said, watch King Felix come to town during interleague and throw a no-hitter or something.

You...
..obviously haven't watched him much. Living here in the PNW I've seen plenty of King Felix - he's been on the DL as much as he's contributed? Where'd you come up with that? He's been on the Disabled List once - last year with a elbow problem. One trip to the DL doesn't make someone injury prone. The last two years he's come to camp healthier than the year before. Not to mention the kid is what, 22 years old - tops?
And there is no way you can lump Felix in with Kyle Davies and Pedro Astacio - that's not fair to Felix or those two. Both of whom are older than Felix is.
Jurrjens isn't even in Felix's class either, good kid but it's not even close. I just don't know how to put it without sounding like a dick - but man at least know what you're talking about.

and to just be clear...
..about Jurrjens and Felix.
Felix has 3 legit + pitches: Fastball, Curve, Slider. Jurrjens not so much, he has a good fastball and sweet change. But his breaking stuff is horrible and very very hittable, and until Jurrjens develops a true third pitch he could run into problems once the 'book' is out on him.

I'll be honest
You're right, that I haven't seen him enough. But a fan kind of gets sour on a player, when the three times I've gone up to Safeco on a supposed Felix day, only to find out that he's out; be it DL or just skipping a start due to a nagging ailment, and getting like Cha Sung Baek instead.
Bringing up Davies and Astacio were examples of two guys who started real hot in their careers, and turned out to be essential busts. Not that I'm saying Felix will sink to those levels, but early in a career doesn't make someone great throughout an entirety.
So I'll defer; you're right, I don't know enough about Felix as I thought I did, but my bottom line is that he's good, but not yet worthy of a nickname like "King."

I agree..
..that he's not ready to be "King" yet - but the comps to Dwight Gooden aren't that far off. One of the problems with Felix isn't Felix himself it's the jokers that run the club. Did you ever hear about the "Open Letter" that the USS Mariner did last year that ended up in Felix's hands? Good stuff, if you go over to the USSM and search for it you'll find it. And it seems that the M's want to still handle Felix with "kid gloves" - but I can understand that. The Mariners as an organization have a history of ruining arms, you can find that on the USSM website as well.
Hell it wasn't until last year-ish that they let him start throwing his slider which is a ++ pitch. On another note, we may not have Felix, but we do have his older brother - Moises Hernandez. He came over from the Orioles when we lost Mazzone. He lead the Braves system in wins for most of last year, though I can't seem to find where he's at this year. The only thing I keep seeing is "reserved list".

Interesting stuff
About the letter, that is. Particularly enjoyed the charting of his pitch selection - entertaining stuff, indeed! Like I said first, when the Mariners come to Atlanta during interleague, watch Felix throw a no-hitter, and sufficiently make me eat my words.
I understand kid gloves with certain people, but when it gets to Joba-like proportions, I begin to think it's over-the-top. Now if Joba becomes the next Roger Clemens, I'll eat those words when I'm 46.

Could you imagine.......
...what our rotation would be like if we had been able to sign Felix Hernandez and had not traded Adam Wainwright? Just the idea of it is sick....mentioning that I think I'm about on make a change to my roster on MLB '08.
