tbs

I know it's all about the red sox in this world, but for pete's sake - seeing them instead of the braves on tbs today - this is just sad!!

maybe if your teacher had been so diligent you would not make spelling errors!

by jug on Apr 6, 2008 2:19 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Gotta love

Having a pitcher on third - no way Santana is going to risk a collision.

still think smoltz is missin' andruw? I don't...

ugh

not stealing a run in the 4th is gonna hurt, methinks.

by bigjoe on Apr 6, 2008 2:47 PM EDT   0 recs

Hasn't been a problem...yet

Anyone else surprised Santana can actually hit the ball?

by jgraham on Apr 6, 2008 2:54 PM EDT   0 recs

High strike

They're definitely calling it this year. Gotay got jobbed.

by jgraham on Apr 6, 2008 2:59 PM EDT   0 recs

This guy's strike zone...

.... has been about as dynamic as you can get. There are some sorry umpires in the game today.

-sdp-

by sdp on Apr 6, 2008 3:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Dynamic?

A generous description....

by Hot Cup Joe on Apr 6, 2008 3:25 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Gotay

He kinda has an attitude up there at the plate. It definitely caused him a strikeout the other night and might have contributed to that high strike call as well. His long walks outside of the batter's box between pitches isn't helping his cause with the umps

by bravesguy95 on Apr 6, 2008 3:37 PM EDT   0 recs

woop

THERES the breathing room we needed. But with the way we've pitched today, I don't think we need it.

by bigjoe on Apr 6, 2008 3:56 PM EDT   0 recs

yeah....

those runs turned out kinda handy....

by Hot Cup Joe on Apr 6, 2008 4:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

TEX!!!

How HUGE did he come up today!?!

RE-SIGN this guy!

by VegasAces on Apr 6, 2008 4:12 PM EDT   0 recs

I know! I was just thinking, we need to pay this guy whatever we can and keep him. He is going to be good for a long time.

by jug on Apr 6, 2008 4:13 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Doesn't seem

like there's any way for the team to maintain any credibility without landing tex - If scheurholz or whoever is calling the shots has any credibility with his liberty media overlords, he has to go on the line for this one.

by Hot Cup Joe on Apr 6, 2008 4:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes, Boras is going to demand a high price. But come on, there likely isn't any better all-around 1B. He is young, capable of hitting 50 HRs in a season and a gold glover.

When is Hampton's contract up? Will that free up some payroll?

by jug on Apr 6, 2008 4:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Seems so

USA Today printed a by team breakdown of salaries this week. Hampton's contract is done - gosh, bet he gets a lot of marketplace interest next winter! I think Smoltz and possibly chipper have one year after this and no other big money deals are hanging over the team.

Here's a link:
http://content.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/salaries/default.aspx

by Hot Cup Joe on Apr 6, 2008 4:31 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

IF...

Glavine retires in conjunction with Hampton's contract being finished, I think the Braves could pay Tex 21-23 mil/year. However, even if they could, I don't know if paying one guy so much money will be in accordance with the organization's philosophy.

-sdp-

by sdp on Apr 6, 2008 4:35 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Not really clear

what the liberty media overlords have for a philosophy. Their original purchase was described as tax-avoidance shenanigans where they were going to have to hold the team for 5 years to get their write off and were not expected to spend anything over the bare minimum in that period. Clearly that's not the whole story - they swapped salty at 350K for tex at 12M, and threw 8M at glavine - they could be running this show cheaper. Still, they kissed off andruw when it seems like they could have been competitive, so hard to say.

by Hot Cup Joe on Apr 6, 2008 4:47 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It will be interesting to see what happens. I wish would could be the Yankees for like a week just to be able to throw some money at Teixeira. I am hoping that we could land him for a little less than $23 mil/yr, and maybe Liberty will be willing to do it? I agree with you, but I think they kissed Andruw because they knew he wasn't worth it. I don't know how much that was ownership and how much it was GM decision.

Interesting topic.

by jug on Apr 6, 2008 7:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

oh christ

They just can't go a game without raising my BP a few points, can they?

by bigjoe on Apr 6, 2008 4:13 PM EDT   0 recs

FEELS GOOD

To win two against the Mets! Great weekend for the Bravos. Smoltz looked sharp as a nail. I hope his shoulder does not give him problems, because he showed that he STILL has it and could have another GREAT year. Tex, man, I want to see him in a Braves uni for a long time.

Taking two from the Mets...soooo sweet!

by WienerDog on Apr 6, 2008 4:23 PM EDT   0 recs

Great game...

...very happy to see several things today. Smoltz looked great as usual, and the bullpen finally came out and bridged the gap. Most importantly we took down Santana the first time we faced him, so all the Mets fans can STFU about how great he is.

by Smoltz's Beard on Apr 6, 2008 6:16 PM EDT   0 recs

Bullpen

When Gotay PH for Smoltz after five IP, I turned to my wife and said "no way they hold them scoreless for four innings". Technically, I guess I was right, but thanks to TEX (there's that name again!), I didn't have to be.

GREAT job out of the 'pen today. Now we can start worrying again, though, with a 4 game set at COL coming up. I'm hoping for a nice long start from Glavine and/or Jair, because I just have a feeling that James is only going to go 5 in his start. If we can get back to Hudson without burning everyone out, I'll be pleased.

Also, overlooked player of the game yesterday, in my book - Boyer. Excellent work out of him.

by VegasAces on Apr 7, 2008 6:58 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed...

...he looked pretty sharp out there. Ohman is on my good side as well.

Now, if we can just keep Resop out of the game I'll be good.

by Smoltz's Beard on Apr 7, 2008 9:02 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

boyer

I'm driving the Blaine Boyer bandwagon, you all can hop on if you want. I'm assuming he's gonna be this year's Moylan with more strikeouts.
