Open Thread and NAHWAL: Mets at Bravers (4/6)
New York @ Atlanta
Holy crap, my f-in computer f-in crapped out... f-stick!
Enough about me, how bout them Braves?
I'm posting from a friend's PC, so I'm cutting this off here. Don't forget to play NAHWAL for the final day -- results may be a bit delayed, I hope you understand.

Gotay
He kinda has an attitude up there at the plate. It definitely caused him a strikeout the other night and might have contributed to that high strike call as well. His long walks outside of the batter's box between pitches isn't helping his cause with the umps

Doesn't seem
like there's any way for the team to maintain any credibility without landing tex - If scheurholz or whoever is calling the shots has any credibility with his liberty media overlords, he has to go on the line for this one.

Yes, Boras is going to demand a high price. But come on, there likely isn't any better all-around 1B. He is young, capable of hitting 50 HRs in a season and a gold glover.
When is Hampton's contract up? Will that free up some payroll?

Seems so
USA Today printed a by team breakdown of salaries this week. Hampton's contract is done - gosh, bet he gets a lot of marketplace interest next winter! I think Smoltz and possibly chipper have one year after this and no other big money deals are hanging over the team.

IF...
Glavine retires in conjunction with Hampton's contract being finished, I think the Braves could pay Tex 21-23 mil/year. However, even if they could, I don't know if paying one guy so much money will be in accordance with the organization's philosophy.

Not really clear
what the liberty media overlords have for a philosophy. Their original purchase was described as tax-avoidance shenanigans where they were going to have to hold the team for 5 years to get their write off and were not expected to spend anything over the bare minimum in that period. Clearly that's not the whole story - they swapped salty at 350K for tex at 12M, and threw 8M at glavine - they could be running this show cheaper. Still, they kissed off andruw when it seems like they could have been competitive, so hard to say.

It will be interesting to see what happens. I wish would could be the Yankees for like a week just to be able to throw some money at Teixeira. I am hoping that we could land him for a little less than $23 mil/yr, and maybe Liberty will be willing to do it? I agree with you, but I think they kissed Andruw because they knew he wasn't worth it. I don't know how much that was ownership and how much it was GM decision.
Interesting topic.

FEELS GOOD
To win two against the Mets! Great weekend for the Bravos. Smoltz looked sharp as a nail. I hope his shoulder does not give him problems, because he showed that he STILL has it and could have another GREAT year. Tex, man, I want to see him in a Braves uni for a long time.

by WienerDog on Apr 6, 2008 4:23 PM EDT 0 recs
Great game...
...very happy to see several things today. Smoltz looked great as usual, and the bullpen finally came out and bridged the gap. Most importantly we took down Santana the first time we faced him, so all the Mets fans can STFU about how great he is.
by Smoltz's Beard on Apr 6, 2008 6:16 PM EDT 0 recs
Bullpen
When Gotay PH for Smoltz after five IP, I turned to my wife and said "no way they hold them scoreless for four innings". Technically, I guess I was right, but thanks to TEX (there's that name again!), I didn't have to be.
GREAT job out of the 'pen today. Now we can start worrying again, though, with a 4 game set at COL coming up. I'm hoping for a nice long start from Glavine and/or Jair, because I just have a feeling that James is only going to go 5 in his start. If we can get back to Hudson without burning everyone out, I'll be pleased.
Also, overlooked player of the game yesterday, in my book - Boyer. Excellent work out of him.
