Open Thread and NAHWAL: Fish at Braves
Miami Marlins at Atlanta Braves, Apr 23, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
Well, he got his 3,000th strikeout last night, but the Braves offense let John Smoltz down. It seemed like everyone was pressing too hard to try and do something, and then when we did get a hit there were already two outs. Also, Lannan absolutely owned our left-handed batters last night.
Oh well, new day, new game, that's the beauty of baseball -- during the season you don't get to stew over a loss for too long. Jeff Bennett toes the rubber for us tonight against the Tigers Marlins top pitching prospect. Go get 'em Benne!

Picks.
Still very disappointed about last nights game. Won’t be around here for tonight’s game until late…my old man softball league begins tonight.
1. 25,000
2. Francoeur
3. The Braves knock Miller out of the game, and in the same inning they also knock his replacement out as well.
Picks to Gain Some Ground
1. 20,111
2. Diaz
3. Marlins use at least 4 pitchers
I tried to stick with the game for it’s entirety last night, but I couldn’t do it. As soon as Campillo threw the ball past Yuni, I performed my now-patented “toss-the-headphones-and-roll-over” manouver, and went to sleep hoping a miracle comeback would greet me in the AM. Imagine my (lack of) surprise when I saw the final – and that Resop was involved (not that it mattered at that point, really).
Picks.
Hmm, the Braves MO is usually that they either destroy or get completely owned by young pitchers they’re not very familiar with. Like Lannan – torch him once, get frozen by him the second time through.
1. 13,233

It wasn't so bad
Aside from Bennett’s first inning, he didn’t pitch horribly. And it’s not like at least I don’t expect anything short of complete suck from Boyer and Resop. It’s like every year the Braves have more guys that make fans cringe than they do door-slammers. It’s like being on the Braves automatically adds four points to a reliever’s ERA. As far as I am concerned, despite glimpses of decency from Boyer the last few outings, he just can’t close an inning. Boyer and Resop just seem to fit snugly into a list of other pathetic Braves relievers that I hope gets traded away for the next generation of crap. McBride, Paronto, Remlinger, Reitsma, Kolb, etc…
I still pray for the day that I watch a game, and see Smoltz go seven innings, Mike Gonzalez come in the 8th and blow hitters away, and then Soriano come in the 9th and blow hitters away. Actually, I think the last time we got something like that was Smoltzie’s 200th win… but Wickman may or may not have been involved then, who knows, and honestly, who cares.

Well...
...I didn’t get a chance to start watching the game until Resop was already in the game, so I’ll have to go by what you say. Did Boyer really look that bad, because I was slowly gaining some amount of faith in him. Too bad, I really thought our bullpen would be an area of strength this season.
It looks like the offense still continues to either score 8 runs or 1 run. 13 LOB? That’s completely unacceptable.

Boyer started out alright, but then decided to get cute throwing his shit curveball, and Uggla tagged him pretty well. Statistically, he only gave up one earned run, but two runs were scored on his watch. And then Resop somehow did worse the next inning.
All those men stranded was the worst part about the night. I’d prefer to get the Lannan treatment again, and have nobody get to third than to have all those men get into scoring position, and not get brought home. It’s like having The Hammer in front of you all night long bending over again and again, or just seeing her picture on the internet.

...
I wasn’t talking about Bennett, because I thought he did a great job after the first inning. I had no confidence after he’d pitched to 4 guys and 2 had been HRs. But, he did good, pig.
I meant our effectiveness was poor in the we had 13 LOB and our ‘pen, yet again, allowed it to be blown open. I meant we had 12 hits and could only score twice, and 8 people were left in scoring position. I meant in two nights we’ve been beaten by the Nats and the Marlins, whom we have owned and should own.
Resop
Maybe the Angels will take him back if we threw in a bag of balls. This guy is terrible. He can throw 98 mph but it must be the straightest fastball in the history of mankind because it gets raked by everyone.
Another thing
Resop slows the game down like nobody else since Pedro Astacio. I understand that he’s got all the time in the world to work on his mechanics and stuff, but there are times when neither team, the fans in the stands, and the fans watching at home on tv wants to be a part of the game anymore. Innings drop to a crawl when he is on the mound. Like Dan Haren, he has the really slow leg kick, and a massive heater, but as he’s shown so far, about a sixtieth of the talent.
I swear the only reason Resop got two K’s looking is because Fredi probably told them to take, just so they could get the hell out of there, and he could get back to his Marietta home.

REsop = REitsma REincarnate?
Because I get the same awful feeling every time he comes in…
Dont’ we need a nickname for him? I’ll start with:
1- The Tee. (Because he might as well put the ball on one)
2- Lights Out (as in turn the stadium ones off because the game is effectively over)
3- Rescore (because the opposing team likely will score, then score again, and so on)
Very nice
My general habit to renaming a pitiful reliever is to add “Mc” in front of their name. I like “Rescore,” because it makes perfect sense, but out of all the relievers the Braves have burnt out on, none has ever given me more anxiety attacks than Macay McBride.
McBride
McDezma
McWickman
McBoyer
McYates
McSosa
I got my ultimate justification when McBride was thrown into the game during a Braves blowout, and let like four runs score without getting a single out, and watching Bobby Cox sitting there all calm and slightly slouched, before letting out a line of explitives and seeing McDowell jump up and get on the phone.

Hate to steal this from the NBA...
“The Human Victory Cigar” – for the other team, that is.

Last ones
I promise:
1. The Human White Flag
2. Mercy Rule
Both of which are sure ways of letting Braves opponents that his teams have thrown in the towel. Oh wait—
3. The Towel – I just want to hear Skip Caray mention once, that Bobby Cox is throwing The Towel into the game.

Chuck James optioned...
... no corresponding move announced. Glavine is coming off the DL on Tuesday, and the Braves want a fresh arm for the bullpen going into the weekend series at Shea.
