Open Thread and NAHWAL: Pirates at Braves (4/2)
Pittsburgh Pirates at Atlanta Braves, Apr 2, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
We get our first real look at our new young pitcher, Jair Jurrjens. It’s gonna be an interesting game to watch -- we’ll see if our offense can come out and erase the slow starts they’ve gotten off to in the last two games and once the game is in the hands of the bullpen, if they can keep the runs off the board.

Don’t forget to get your picks in before the game for Nok-A-Homa-Win-A-Lotta (click here to learn how to play and to view the leaderboard -- which is coming soon); the three categories are (1) Attendance, (2) Pick to Click, and (3) Above and Beyond Pick.

2. Chipper
3. At least two players will be HPB
Also...
Did we ever get results from the last game's picks? I'm new to this, so I probably just don't get it.
Sometimes...
..it might take Gondee a day or two for results and posts them in the game thread. In other words todays game results will be in this thread when he tally's the scores.
Thanks, RD
I can certainly understand how it would take a while to comb through all that stuff.

I had to build an Excel spreadsheet that would do all the calculations, and I just went ahead and did it for the whole season, so it took me a bit longer.... oh, and like 50 people are playing this game, so yes it takes me a while to comb through the results (but, to a degree I enjoy it -- some of those picks are pretty funny.
Let it be known....
.....that if the game ended today, I'd win!!!
(in a 4-way tie, but that's okay).

Hmmm...
Doesn't seem like your "out on a limb" is quite specific enough... Can we get some names of the strikeout victims at least? ;)
pick
1. 34,800
2. Tex
3. Kotsay robs a Bay of a HR.
My above and beyond was going to be:
After walking 4 in the 9th, the Bucs drop a can of corn, Chipper scores from 1st to tie it and we lose in 12 innings after Nady hits a 3 run shot.
But, I thought what were the chances of that happening?
If someone...
...had predicted that correctly the other night, the NAHWAL game should have been cancelled for the rest of the season with all prizes going to that person.

attendance
what's with the pathetic looking crowd tonight?
i realize there is an attendance boost in the summer, and the pirates aren't exactly a huge draw, but this is the opening series of the year.
atlanta really drops the balls when it comes to sports teams. we deserve our poor reputation as fans.
I agree, attendance seems awful tonight...
...especially for such a beautiful night! I would love to be there, but I'm in another state about 150 miles from ATL.
I would think that for such a nice stadium, and such a consistently good team, the Braves would draw better than they have been.
Any thoughts?

As the Sports Guy said
Atlanta is the worst major sports city in America. I just don't think there's such thing as a casual fan here; either you care as much as us or not at all.
Agreed...
...if I lived in the ATL I would be at every home game.

No mystery for me at least
We've got some of the best radio and TV guys around (at least in my opinion), getting to the game for many people is not easy thanks to traffic. For me, it is at least a 6 hour ordeal to get to the game, and I live in the metro.
early
I think he generally does this early in the year, before he has really figured out exactly who are the best guys and to share the workload until everyone gets into the groove. Maybe I am wrong about that, but it does seem like in the beginning of the season we see more guys from the pen...
by jug on Apr 2, 2008 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah...
..you're probably right but at the same time he keeps up this pace and the bullpen is going to be dead ass tired come the end of May.
Resop
Jeez - i thought resop was a joke - you know something about his name spelled backwards - i never realized he was a real guy....
hooray
we got a win! the pitching was good, if not overworked! the offense exploded near the end of the game! woohoo, we're not gonna finish 0-162!!!
NAHWAL Results
