The Acosta / Bennett Assumptions

A couple of things that have really bugged me lately are two assumptions by many Braves fans. The first is that Manny Acosta has a guaranteed spot in the bullpen, and the second is that we need a long reliever and Jeff Bennett will fill that role.

I just don't get why so many people, including beat writers, feel that Acosta has a bullpen spot. Yes, he put up a nice ERA (2.28) and WHIP (1.14) last year in his late season call-up. He even had a good K per 9 rate, but hardly anything about that performance was on par with his minor league numbers. The WHIP he posted was his lowest since Rookie ball in 2005, and it didn't account for what was still a high walk rate. So are we supposed to believe that Acosta was a lot less hittable in the majors than he was the last two years at triple-A?

My take on Acosta is that he will become more hittable and that his proclivity to walk batters will get him into increasingly more trouble. Acosta really burst onto the scene in Atlanta by not allowing a run in his first seven appearances, but then his luck caught up with him. His walk rate increased, he was more hittable, he struck out fewer people, and he allowed more runs.

I'm not saying that Acosta won't make the team, but I think he's competing for one of several bullpen spots, and he is by no means assured a spot on the team (actually, I don't think he'll make the team, partly because he has an option left). We'll see if his tendency towards the base on balls will catch up to him or if major league hitters will find him more hittable this spring (if he even faces major leaguers late in spring games).

As for Jeff Bennett I keep hearing similar assumptions that he has a bullpen spot. These assumptions are a bit different from those of Acosta. With Bennett people assume that he will be our long reliever, because, well, no one else seems to fit that role after we traded away Villarreal. I certainly think Bennett could be a long reliever, but I disagree with people that think he's assured a spot since the Braves must carry a long reliever, because I don't think the Braves need a long reliever.

I've never been totally sold on the need for a "long man" -- a pitcher who just sits around waiting for opportunities to arise where multiple innings of relief need to be thrown in non-critical, non-matchup situations. This notion is dying out and becoming less of a necessity. This is the era of the seven-man bullpen, not the five or six man pens of old. With a seven-man pen there is no longer a need for a long man. When long relief situations arise, the manager simply pieces together his plethora of relievers for the rest of the game an inning at a time, and maybe gets a couple of innings from a reliever who hasn't pitched in a while.

In this sense, Bennett would be a nice commodity to have, but not an essential one, as many people think. Bennett may be far more valuable starting every fifth day in the minors and keeping himself in shape to be a starter in case he is needed in the event of an injury to a pitcher in the major league rotation (he has an option left, after all).

My seven-man Braves bullpen is below; feel free to disagree.

Rafael Soriano - closer
Peter Moylan - could be the setup guy, can also be a long man at times
Will Ohman - LOOGY
Royce Ring - power LOOGY
Blaine Boyer - middle relief, out of options
Tyler Yates - middle relief, out of options
Chris Resop - middle relief, out of options

agree
with you on just about everything, besides Resop. That last spot is very much a toss-up and Resop is a possibility, I'm just not sure he'll show enough to get the role. I think the probability is still that Acosta gets the role, despite the fact that I agree with you on him regressing this year.

Bennett
Are you sure he has an option left?  I though he was done.

Options
Yeah, Bennett is out of options, so I think that he will make the team instead of Chris Resop.

I believe...
Resop is out of options as well, so I think is point is moot.

Bennett
has an options left. That was going around but DOB debunked that one a couple weeks ago

Options.
I have no doubt that those without options have a leg up on making the big league team out of spring training.  It would be a shame if we put somebody at risk to speculate on another pitcher that could be stashed away for a later date.

The long man
I agree that this is a dying breed and that the Braves would do just fine piecing 4 - 5 innings out of the guys they have in the pen.  But what about this as an alternative:  Correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't Smoltzy hinted he wouldn't be opposed to a 6 man rotation?  I am a bit reserved on this and can see both sides.  What about you - is this a benefit or would it take away games from Smoltzy and Huddy?

resop and yates
resop and yates won't make the team.  1 of the 2 will, but not both. personally, i dont see where tyler yates fits in.  i would take acosta and bennett any day.

on another note, it seems like brent lillibridge forgot the rules of baseball.  he ran on a pop fly to the shortstop with 1 out.

Yates...
..will have a job in the pen. Bobby loves him, and outside Rafael Soriano he led the team in High Leverage situations.

So I'm not really sure where you think that Yates wont make the team. All signs point to him coming north when the season starts.

what does anyone see in...
tyler yates.  he wasn't even impressive in the minors, and 2 of his 3 years in the majors have been nothing short of terrible. i know most people come to his protection and say that he was "overused" by bobby.  he was 3rd on the list of relievers behind moylan and soriano in innings pitched. i don't buy the overuse excuse. let him blossom into a good reliever with some other team. http://thebaseballcube.com/players/Y/Tyler-Yates.shtml

It wasn't total innings
it was that we'd see him out there 3, 4, or 5 games in a row. The same exact thing happened with Soriano. While they were on normal rest they were great to decent, when they were being run out there every day they sucked. Also Moylan has a rubber arm.

Yates
I would stop watching whenever Yates enters the game, but it's like a car wreck that I can't look away from.  Hopefully he will only enter games that the Braves are trailing by 3+ or leading by 5+.

Either way, I don't think teams are terrified of this bullpen unless Soriano can keep it together and Moylan turns out to not be a fluke.

hmm
Unless Moylan has a Wickman-esque breakdown, he is not going to be the long man.

Resop
I really, really don't think he makes the team, nor do I want him to. I'd hope Bennett or Acosta makes the team instead, maybe even someone like Charlie Morton. Just...not Resop.

I'd prefer if Yates has a dreadful spring and gets cut too, but that would probably be wishing for too much.

what's REALLY going to happen...
the players with options will be sent down, and those without will be kept on the roster. It sounds kind of harsh but that's how it is.

btw, anyone pissed that Frenchy isn't putting up a fight with the contract renewal? Just give him a tiny bit more than Heap and let's get past this!

I blame his wife
and Mccanns, they broke up McFrenchy and that screwed everything up :-)

haha
yeah, in every picture I see of the Frenchies the wife seems like she's spending all the money on doggy spas and insane amounts of paintings to hang in the living room.

Unpopular.
I hate to have to say this again, but McCann got his longterm deal for to reasons: he performed at an exceptional level for an entire season and is among the elite at his position.  When Francoeur taps into his potential and puts together an All-Star caliber season, then he'll get his money.  At this point, there's no drawback to going season to season with the young slugger and he understands this.  I hope Jeff pulls it all together this season, but until then, the Braves will not commit to him at a specific level into the future.  I know this will once again make me unpopular, but it's true.

long relief
If the Braves do keep a long relief guy in the pen, I wouldn't mind seeing Chuck James in the role. Chuckie gave us about four great innings per start before he gave the game up in the 5th or 6th inning. a good solid four innings would be exactly what we need in a long reliever. With the clog of pitchers battling for the #5 spot in the rotation, this might be a good way to ease the congestion.

by rom121 on Mar 4, 2008 1:59 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Hum
A long relief lefty... that's a pretty good suggestion. The weird thing about him as a lefty is that left-handed batters are across the board better against him, so he wouldn't be able to be used as a situational lefty, he would purely be an innings eater.

by gondeee on Mar 4, 2008 2:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting.
I've thought about this as a possiblity because of his limited pitch arsenal, the inherent advantage for lefties in relief and his relative (and regressing) effectiveness at the ML-level.  With the added depth in the rotation, I could see this shift as a real choice.
