Around SBN: Phillies trade for OF Matt Stairs Bar-right-arrows

Nats release John Patterson

I'd really like to sign him. Not sure the nature of his injury, but he was a good pitcher when healthy. His lifetime stats aren't great, but the one year he was healthy (2005) he was 9-7, 3.13 ERA, 1.19 WHIP through almost 200 innings.

I'm amazed the Nats didn't just wait for him to rehab, it's not like they have a pitching surplus.

He'll get picked up
i agree, when healthy, patterson has good stuff.  he's not quite ace material yet, but eventually he will be fully healthy, and will be a great pickup for any team that needs some starting pitching.

but with young pitchers like chico, hanrahan, lannan to name a few, ready for the bigs now, i suppose patterson and his higher-than-the-rest-of-the-players salary were expendible.

holy cow

the kid is good, just needs to be in the right place.  i like him alot, and he's still got potential, but I don't see Atlanta taking him.

he used to pitch really well against us. I'd take him.

Psychology
There's obviously something severely wrong with him if one of the worst teams with close to zero starting pitching cut him and no one wanted to trade for him. He's probably on the verge of another major surgery and wouldn't pass anyone's physical.

I mean c'mon, the Nationals aren't stupid. It's surprising because we don't keep up with them and the only times we've heard of Patterson is when he dominated us a few years ago. He's obviously not the same pitcher and potential is probably not there anymore.

simply put
patterson needs to be paired up with barry zito.  i mean seriously; part of the likely reason that patterson was cut was his finicky health, that team physicians and local physicians couldn't figure out what was wrong with him other than the "forearm" issue he always claimed to have.  he event went as far as to cross to canada to find some new age healer for diagnosis.

with this kind of fluff in his head, there's no better place for him to be than next to fellow new age nut, barry zito, out in san francisco.  that way, when he's healthy, we won't have to deal with him too often, either.

Has anyone
perfected the titanium replacement shoulder yet? If so I'll take him. But until then he is about like hampton. Just no faith that he will ever pitch. We have young pitchers we can waste resources on.
