Bonds

Much as I dislike the guy, his presence in the Braves lineup would be formidable, maybe the best 1-2-3 punch in baseball. I would lock him up to a 1 year deal since we're going for broke in '08 anyway. Defense would suffer slightly and there would be the inevitable steroid distractions, but so what? The man and his OBP would add several much-needed victories to this team's record. And it would make Terence Moore happy.

He's old, arrogant, and injury-prone. His presence in the clubhouse couldn't help anything and the money would be better served on Frenchy or Tex. Let Diaz play LF.

But...
Let's be honest hear Braves fans. We've dealt with an aging Raul Mondesi, Tom Martin, Ken Ray as a set-up man, Chris Reitsma as our closer, Ryan Langerhans getting most of the starts in left, etc. I hate Bonds just as much as everyone else. I think he's a tremendous douche and he's the poster boy for jerks.

However, I can't help but drool over a 3-4-5 of Chipper, Bonds, and Teixeira. Do you know what he'd do to our attendance? He could have long term effects on our payroll. Not too mention the ridiculous numbers he'll put up. And you guys will say no because he might go to jail sometime during the year? Big deal! Put it in a clause. He's a jerk? We're not even allowed in the clubhouse, not to mention Bobby will be able to keep him in line at least a little.

I hope he comes to Atlanta.

Well.......
The more I think about it, the less evil this idea seems. Give him a low base pay, load the contract with incentives, wind him up and let him go. Make it to where he has to get a certain number of ABs to get the big money. Diaz can spell him in LF and gives the Braves a really good PH on the bench. B. Jones would come up when Bonds goes to the DL. I don't really like Bonds, but having him bat behind Hoss and Tex might not be a bad idea.

I'd definitely do it
Considering he's worth at least $15m as a hitter, if we could get him on a cheap one-year and get him 500 AB's it'd be a huge boon.

negative ghost rider
Bonds in a Braves uniform would be a huge circus, slap in the face to the Hammer, and would alienate most if not all the players.

Hell no.

No Upside
If he comes here and does well, and the team does well... well, who cares.  It's a proven cheater.  Not the classiest move for a team like ours.  Bonds needs to walk away.  With Clemens...  A great lesson...  Bonds and Clemens careers pre-steroid are Hall Of Fame ones (Def. Clemens, Maybe Bonds)  You admit what you do and people forgive, or you don't and you go to jail, which both these guys might be doing.

Would it be
a good baseball move?  Maybe.  No doubt he would be an asset to the lineup, though I have my doubts about him roaming around the outfield.  No question he is better suited for a DH spot on an AL team, or possibly as a 1B for a NL team.  Unquestionably you can get him on the cheap, and he'll be worth more to a team than what he makes.

However, all that aside, there is likely one organization in baseball that absolutely cannot sign him, and that is the Braves . . . an organization simply cannot slap the greatest player in its history in the face like that.

If the Braves were going to do something like this, they would be better served bringing in Clemens (not saying that this is even a possibility-simply pointing out that it is our starting pitching and not our bats that needs help).  If someone is actually willing to take a shot on him, expect Bonds to land somewhere like TB, KC, MIN, etc.

Economics
How would it be a slap in the face? If had not broken the record yet, then I can see it as a slap in the face, maybe. But we're just signing him to be a good clean up hitter, not celebrate him as anything. There's no way to know if he would alienate any of the players. He's had enemies, sure, but he's also had friends in the clubhouse too.

I think this would be a positive place for Bonds. He could interact with Aaron a lot more, it's more passive than most places, and he could be the "role model" Jesse Jackson wants for the Atlanta Braves.

We could put up with him for a year. We've put up with crap production, I can put up with a jerkoff if he has good production. He'll at least keep the Mets out of the papers and we might even be the "team to beat."

This is all on the basis he doesn't want a crapload of money, which he probably does.

What?
You're kidding right?  If Bonds had done it clean, then I understand your argument.  But Aaron stood by and watched this juiced monster break what was the most prestigious record in all of sports, with nary a comment--showing more restraint than likely 99.9% of people ever would.  And you don't think that bringing that very player onto a team and into a city that reveres Aaron would be a slap in the face?

I want to win ball games, too, but there is no way the club would do it--and even if they did, I think 80-90% of the fans would never accept it.  Can you imagine the hometown crowd booing him the entire season?  No way the Braves would ever think about doing this, and if they did, I'd give serious thought to burning my hat and finding a "new" team.

unbelievable
Do you want Bobby Cox to die from the rage he would have if Bonds was apart of the squad?

by Chester Highwater on Mar 4, 2008 11:26 AM EST   0 recs

Do you want to win this year or not?
Cox could call him "Bondsy" when he's at the plate.

by TradeAndruw on Mar 4, 2008 1:49 PM EST   0 recs

Yes, but I don't believe...
that history has shown that Barry Bonds' teams have done a whole lot of big-time 'winning'.  he's a cancer and a buffoon.  and he is presently a dreadful outfielder, and sportscasters seem to act surprised when he actually runs to a base w/out pulling something.
