Around SBN: Ohio State And Florida Target 2013 Receiver Recruits

July 31, 2008

I think if Frank Wren can't sign Texiera to an extension by then, I would imagine we would trade him.  Unless of course they deemed the pennant was in the balance if we lost him, but I would rather trade him for a butt load of higher end prospects or high caliber pitching or something.  Yay or nay?  Who do you think we could land if that were to be the case.  Obviously it would be a large market team.  BoSox?  Say maybe Clay Bucholz or Jon Lester.  Yanks?  Phil HUghes or JOba Chamberlain?  I would imagine it could potentially be another Santana race.

Interesting...
.....I'd like to see who we have coming down the pipe as 1B prsopects before we trade Tex.  Will Ka'aihue manage AA?  Will Heyward (or even Cody Johnson) get switched to 1st?  What about Tyler Flowers from catcher to 1st?  Or maybe Thorman will suddenly figure it out?

Ah, July speculation in February - I love it!

good thinking
i like the thought. if we don't believe there is a better than 60% chance to sign him in the offseason and it won't affect the race to much then we should unload him to ny or bosox to get a great pitcher like Lester or Bucholz and about 2 other solid prospects. because in my opinion the trade of salty for tex would be awful if we couldn't sign him cause i still think salty could have played first based on his bat alone. even though elvis was expendable but we sent some really solid pitchers in the deal as well.

TEX
No one is going to give up much for him in a trade and will wait until he becomes a FA.

Heyward

I would imagine he would shift if Tex doesn't get signed long term.  Our next wave of strength is in our outfield (as it has been middle infield in years past), we have great depth there.  Cody Johnson is a good player too, but from what I read he's better off in the outfield and Heyward moved to 1st because of his build.  But if Tex is signed long term, I would imagine one of these two, I'd rather keep Heyward, wil be traded in a package to bolster the rotation.  I bet when the Bravos were mentioned as late players in the Dan Haren trade, Heyward and/or JOhnson's names were in the mix.

Ummm... What?
Trading Tex would kill our chances to be competative, not to mention a public relations disaster.  Moreover, I sincerely doubt that the value of Tex at this All-Star Break would be anywhere near that of Johan Santana (or any of the other aces, for that matter) this offseason.  Let's put it this way, would anyone in baseball trade Johan for Tex straight up???  Tex will not sign an extension before he hits free agency with anyone, but the Braves will certainly be players for him then.  Notice how even the biggest budget teams were weary of adding a contract like the one the Mets gave to Santana and, as explained earlier, he's a more valuable player.  We will have payroll flexibility and, if he's the best out there (C.C. Sabathia is a real possibility at this point) then we will target him.  If we let him go, we'll get draft pick compensation.  Add to that what we will be getting for Mahay and most of the package that we gave up for them will be recouped.

Jason Heyward is a plus defender in RF and can even play an average CF, so he will likely not be wasted at 1B.  Cody Johnson needs to cut down on the strikeouts before he becomes a better prospect, but he's much more likely to make the move to 1B.  Salty, by the way, does not have the bat to play that position and it would be a waste of potential and contextual strength to put him there.

I doubt he'll be traded
We won't get much in return. The Yankees and Red Sox already showed they're not willing to trade any of their prospects aways. The Tigers have enough offense already. So what other AL playoff teams does that leave? Cleveland? Anaheim? Those teams are already pretty loaded as well. The only thing we might get is a couple of mid-level prospects.

I agree
The Braves will be in the pennant race, and the value of Tex won't be high enough for this to be a viable option. If they tank, definitely he should be dealt, but the Braves should be in the race in July.

Also, the Braves will get a #1 and a sandwich pick for Tex after 2008. That has a lot of value.

it will all depend

on the playoff race.  the yanks and redsox may ont want to trade now that they are in the offseason.  Injuries/lack of production will dictate this.  Tex is a free agen next year, and Im sure a team would rather trade for him midseason and sign him to an extension before bidding wars occur.  Giambi is also a FA next season, and surely the Yanks will not bring him back.  I would be surprised if they did.  I think if we had to trade him (which I hope they dont, and sign him long term) there will be interest and we will get something decent in return.

Rumor Alert
Pure speculation on behalf of MLBtraderumors.com

Braves are among five teams interested in Anna, I mean Chris Benson.

wow
Such a great player, we can't even spell his first name correctly. YEAH~!

Seriously, what the hell do we need Kris Benson for? To underachieve and distract the team with his wife being a whore? Come on now.

Sign Tex Period
Hey losing Tex would be like the Braves trading away Francoeur and Mcann as well.  Those three guys Tex, Frenchy, and Mcann are the cornerstone of Braves teams to come and I don't seem them going anywhere. Classic players such as Chipper Jones, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine will be gone after this season along with the injury prone and waste of money/time Mike Hampton and that should free up enough money to sign Tex.  The only X-factor is dumb Scott Boras whom thinks every client he has deserve a 100 million plus contract.  My prediction is that Tex will go against Boras and stay in Atlanta; final contract should be four or five years for about 15-17.5 million a season.  I mean the guy went to college at G-Tech and is very comfortable in Atlanta and so is his wife, to keep him satisfied though Atlanta will need to go deep in the playoffs.

Tex doesn't deserve a blank check
He's MAYBE a top-five first baseman. A very good but not great player. We should try to re-sign him, but within reason. Letting him go for draft picks wouldn't be the end of the world.

by DwightSmithPinchHits on Feb 8, 2008 10:17 PM EST up reply actions

yea sign him period
but like you said, there are alot of holes whenever scott boras is involved.  I would like to think Atlanta can sign him long term - and perhaps they can - but we couldnt bring andruw back, and i hope that doesnt translate to the same thing for Tex.

Tex.
Get used to huge numbers being tossed around, like 7/$135M.

this is why I think

major league baseball needs to start figuring out a way to control escalating prices.  salary cap anyone?

by darthspiderman on Feb 8, 2008 9:20 AM EST reply actions

You're joking right?
The Red Sox have a Gold Glove winning 1B in Youkillis (who is under team control for the next few seasons) and a monster DH in Ortiz.

The Yankees have an opening at 1B if a platoon can't be worked out, with Giambi and Matsui as DH/bench. And why would they give that much for half a season of Tex when every has heard what a big Don Mattingly fan he was growing up?

A quick look around the league makes me wonder if there are any contenders other than the Yanks in need of a 1B.  The Mariners could upgrade Jose Vidro at DH.  I suppose the Padres could try Adrian Gonzalez in left.  Beyond that you're banking on injuries to create demand.

If you're in love with the game it's not something you can turn on and off like a light. It's something that runs so deep it takes you over. -Billy Martin
