Community Projection: Mike Hampton

So really, how can we project Mr. Hampton? We haven't seen him pitch in a regular season game since 2005, and we only saw him pitch one inning of winter ball this year. Is it foolish to try and project what his stats will be if some of don't even believe he will step foot on the mound?

There is still a whole bunch of competitiveness left Hampton, and if there is a way to be a fixture in the middle of the diamond once again, then he'll get back on that mound and be as fierce of a competitor as he can be. But even he can't escape the common notion that a pitcher's first year back from TJ surgery is not as good as his second year. Mike tried to come back too quickly from the first surgery and it likely cost him another year, so I guess the real question is, "has he learned from that first attempt to comeback?"

For what it's worth, here is my projection of Hampton's 2008 stats:

9-6 with a 3.98 ERA in 120 IP with several stints on the DL for "elbow soreness"

Maybe it's a bit too optimistic, but my feeling is that he'll have games where he gets completely lit up, and other games where he's pretty dominant - he'll be trying to figure out who Mike Hampton the pitcher is again.

Right Projection, Wrong Year.
That looks like what I was expecting from Hampton last season, but after two years off, I'm not expecting that much anymore.  I'd be truly surprised if this wasn't his worst season in a Braves uniform (performance-wise) but if he can get close to his 2004 numbers, that'd be gravy.  In my mind, he'll be a solid #4, which is pretty much what we need from him.

i don't know...
I'm guessing he'll go on the DL at least once.

I'll say 8-5, 3.97

never know what to expect
i have a belief that hampton is one of the major keys to the braves' success - if somehow, the team can squeeze perhaps 10 wins out of him, that would be more than sufficient at closing up the gap that separated them from the division title last year, if not give them a little lead.

i think it would be ironic if hampton actually turns out to be one of the more reliable guys on the season - kind of like when last year, when smoltz would get no run support, huddy's games kept getting blown by wickman, and for a few weeks, buddy carlyle turned into the team's more reliable guy.  imagine hampton filling that role?  strange, i know.

my prediction
he will slip and throw out his back while covering first base on a groundball

by RehabReject on Feb 4, 2008 4:35 PM EST   0 recs

Hampton
I'll go with around 15-20 starts and a 4.75 ERA. I think he has a legitimate shot at being a good #5 starter.

hampton
Blows SOMETHING out in spring. Doesn't pitch an inning.

by bigjoe on Feb 4, 2008 6:38 PM EST   0 recs

what would REALLY be awesome
How about Hampton blows out his arm Chet Stedman style in the World Series? haha

by RehabReject on Feb 4, 2008 7:38 PM EST   0 recs

Haha
Chet Stedman, funny movie. Maybe Hampton can develop an eephus pitch.

Hampton
I have a feeling he starts out well and then goes down for the last time.

by Chin Music on Feb 4, 2008 9:02 PM EST   0 recs

Hampton
One pitch, one longball, one exploding elbow. Exploding elbow becomes bigger viral video than Braves manger throwing fit.

0 innings pitched, undefined ERA, undefined Hits/inning, 1 disgusting blooper.

Optimism
I think this is ridiculously optimistic. If he had an ERA under 5, I'll be surprised. I say 4-8, 5.31

Are you guys crazy?
First off, the Chet Stedman line was absolutely hysterical!!! As for Hampton, I'm thinking more of the lines if he is ready to pitch the Braves take the division down by over 3 games. Hampton is the key to the Braves success. Without Hampton, a reliable veteran pitcher, pitching in the fourth spot of the rotation who do we have again? Chucky? Lerew? Reyes? Buddy? C'mon. There is no way any of these guys will put up numbers Hampton, with a new elbow, has the potential to do. Additionally, my prediction is 10-8 with a 4.25 era.

We can always resign him next year for around $5 mil which would be a quality sign b/c he will be able to confidently fill the 3 spot when Tommy is retired.

by Pirates07 on Feb 5, 2008 11:20 AM EST   0 recs

Well...
..Lerew was never a realistic option. Went down with TJ surgery last season.

you guys are hilarious
hearing the name chet stedman made me lol for real.  i'm curious to whether or not vegas would be interested in legitimately putting odds on hampton's season.  i can imagine the lines:

MIKE HAMPTON 2008 BETS
injury during spring training +-
injury in april +
-
injury in may +-
injury: elbow +
-
injury: shoulder +-
injury: hamstring +
-
injury: oblique
makes it to all-star break +-
makes 10 starts +
-
makes 20 starts +-
makes 30 starts +
-
records 5 wins first +-
records 5 losses first +
-
hits a home run +/-

i mean, if vegas is willing to put odds on coin tosses, and individual quarters of footballs, whose to say they won't put odds on something as entertaining as mike hampton?

Predicting Hampton a tough task
First, let me say that I don't have clue how to predict what Mike Hampton will accomplish in 2008.   In view of the fact that Hampton hasn't pitched in the major leagues in almost two full seasons, I don't think his previous record as a major league pitcher tells us much about his 2008 preformance.

That being said, I notice that Gondeee's prediction for Hampton's 2008 ERA is 3.98, which also happens to be Hampton's lifetime major league ERA.

I think the Braves would be pretty darn lucky indeed if Hampton can equal his lifetime ERA in 2008 after missing all of 2007 and almost all of 2006.    They will be even luckier if Hampton can go 9-6, which would be a very positive performance indeed for a #5 starter.  9-6, 3.98 wouldn't be worth $15 million, but it would be substantially better than any #5 starter has performed for the Braves at least since Paul Byrd went 8-7, 3.94 in 2004.

After being away from the game for this long, I would expect Hampton to require most of April and May just to get his feel back for his three best pitches.  I will be very happy if Hampton can just pitch more than 150 innings in 2008.  If that happens, it will happen because Hampton is able to stay healthy for the most part.  If Hampton pitches more than 150 innings and is able to regain his control, command, and velocity, he will be an asset and a big help to the Braves rotation.

Braves fan since 1958.

realization
I'd almost RATHER have Hampton get hurt in spring, not only so I could laugh, but so we could see what 2 of our kids truly have at the ML level.

Screw it, I'm cheering against him.

by bigjoe on Feb 5, 2008 7:57 PM EST   0 recs

Already?
Hasn't he already tweaked a hamstring in winter ball?

by mhsiegel14 on Feb 8, 2008 5:51 PM EST   0 recs

yeah
But he's supposedly fine now. Uh huh. He's probably got ice on that sucker every day while he lights cigars with hundred dollar bills and puts Cristal on his cereal.

God I hate Mike Hampton.
