Community Projection: Mike Hampton
So really, how can we project Mr. Hampton? We haven't seen him pitch in a regular season game since 2005, and we only saw him pitch one inning of winter ball this year. Is it foolish to try and project what his stats will be if some of don't even believe he will step foot on the mound?
There is still a whole bunch of competitiveness left Hampton, and if there is a way to be a fixture in the middle of the diamond once again, then he'll get back on that mound and be as fierce of a competitor as he can be. But even he can't escape the common notion that a pitcher's first year back from TJ surgery is not as good as his second year. Mike tried to come back too quickly from the first surgery and it likely cost him another year, so I guess the real question is, "has he learned from that first attempt to comeback?"
For what it's worth, here is my projection of Hampton's 2008 stats:
9-6 with a 3.98 ERA in 120 IP with several stints on the DL for "elbow soreness"
Maybe it's a bit too optimistic, but my feeling is that he'll have games where he gets completely lit up, and other games where he's pretty dominant - he'll be trying to figure out who Mike Hampton the pitcher is again.

never know what to expect
i think it would be ironic if hampton actually turns out to be one of the more reliable guys on the season - kind of like when last year, when smoltz would get no run support, huddy's games kept getting blown by wickman, and for a few weeks, buddy carlyle turned into the team's more reliable guy. imagine hampton filling that role? strange, i know.

Are you guys crazy?
We can always resign him next year for around $5 mil which would be a quality sign b/c he will be able to confidently fill the 3 spot when Tommy is retired.

Predicting Hampton a tough task
That being said, I notice that Gondeee's prediction for Hampton's 2008 ERA is 3.98, which also happens to be Hampton's lifetime major league ERA.
I think the Braves would be pretty darn lucky indeed if Hampton can equal his lifetime ERA in 2008 after missing all of 2007 and almost all of 2006. They will be even luckier if Hampton can go 9-6, which would be a very positive performance indeed for a #5 starter. 9-6, 3.98 wouldn't be worth $15 million, but it would be substantially better than any #5 starter has performed for the Braves at least since Paul Byrd went 8-7, 3.94 in 2004.
After being away from the game for this long, I would expect Hampton to require most of April and May just to get his feel back for his three best pitches. I will be very happy if Hampton can just pitch more than 150 innings in 2008. If that happens, it will happen because Hampton is able to stay healthy for the most part. If Hampton pitches more than 150 innings and is able to regain his control, command, and velocity, he will be an asset and a big help to the Braves rotation.
